Chapter 5 - Talking Armor
Iron man gasped loudly for air. The group backed away from him. He looked frantically around the room, letting his eyes adjust.
"What the hell?!" Tony said delirious. His accent was different from theirs though he spoke the common tongue clear as crystal.
"What happened? Did we win? … Please tell me nobody kissed me," he joked quickly and painfully. They all seemed to raise an eyebrow.
"What? Why the hell would anyone want to kiss you?" said Pyp. Tony finally allowed his eyes to settle on the people in the room. He didn't recognize any of them or the room for that matter.
"Who the hell are all of you?" he demanded. "And where the hell am I …." he said to himself.
"We could ask the same of you," said a suspicious Jon Snow. Tony ordered Jarvis to open the suit. He was wearing simplistic clothes they had never seen before, and a blue light glowed from his chest. They backed up again uncertain at this magical metal suit.
"Aahhhh …. ooohhh I feel like shit … why does that hurt," he said holding his side. He could see his breath, "Wow, that is brisk," he said feeling the crips, cold air nipping at his exposed skin.
"You fell over 100,000 meters, Sir," said Jarvis. Shock painted his face. He took a few painful breaths. "I shouldn't be alive …" he muttered to himself. Edd and Pyp exchanged odd looks. Jon stepped towards the metal man.
"Why does this … thing … keep calling you Stark?" asked again. Tony met his dark eyes with his.
"Because I am … " he said as a matter of fact as if he should already know who he was. Jon gave him a funny look, not understanding or trusting him.
"Tony … Tony Stark? Iron man?" he said.
"Iron man?" said Edd. Tony looked at the small lad covered in thick leather and black furs. "Is that what you call that thing … makes sense," he said thinking about it. Tony cocked an eyebrow hard, still holding his side. He looked around the room again counting the people inside it.
"Why are you all dressed like that?" he said gesturing to their clothes. "Is this a Lord of the Rings convention or something, ahh," he said wincing. Jon wasn't impressed. Ghost growled at him again, which made Tony flinch.
"What the hell is that?" he breathed fearful of the large white beast with big red eyes. Jon narrowed his gaze at him.
"You call yourself a Stark, but you don't even know what a Dire wolf is?" said Jon gesturing to Ghost. Tony just stared at him breathing heavy like he was crazy. "If you are a Stark, why haven't I heard of you before," demanded Snow. Tony glared at him and rapidly blinked hard.
"Why do I find that incredibly hard to believe?" he said sarcastically. Jon got in his face.
"Because I am the bastard son of Ned Stark, of house Stark. I grew up with them. I know all of their names, even the dead ones … I've never heard of you before," he snapped. The Iron man looked into his dark eyes awkwardly to see if he was lying before bursting to awkward laughter. Sam was scared for him. He thought Jon would pull out his sword right then and there and end him, or Ghost might lunge for his throat.
"That funny to you?!" he hissed.
"Look, pal, I don't know who you are, but you are a really good actor. I guess that's why they all come to New York, right?" Tony joked giving him a quick pat on the shoulder. Sam had never seen him so flabbergasted.
"What?!" snapped Jon, his face scrunched up in a ball of confusion and anger. Sam stepped forward.
"If I may, you did fall from a great height … perhaps your memory is not quite right," suggested Sam timidly.
"No, this is Mr. Stark. CEO of Stark enterprises. Also known as Iron man. I should know, he programmed me," Jarvis interjected. They looked around the room searching in vain for the source of the voice.
"See, can't argue with that," said Tony pointing to his suit.
"We don't even know what that is," said Edd.
"Ok, I've had just about enough," said the Lord Commander drawing his sword. Tony put his hands up in surrender.
"Woah! Hey tough guy! Let's use our words," he said calmly. The sword looked real enough.
"I'm only going to ask this once. Who are you? And why are you impersonating a Stark," Mormont commanded.
"I'm not-"
"Yes you are! And I'd like to know why," said Jon angrily also drawing a sword. Tony could hear the metal sound slide out from the sheath. The hackles on Ghost's neck and back rose.
"I'm sorry, didn't I just save New York?" he said arrogantly.
"New York?" asked Sam. Tony raised his brows with his hands still up and turned to the short, big fellow as if he had just slapped him.
"Ok … you all seem like really good actors, but now I know that has to be a joke," he said directly to him. Sam furrowed his brows.
"Where do you think you are?" he asked politely. With his eyes still on Sam, Tony spoke to Jarvis.
"Jarvis where am I?" he asked. It took Jarvis longer than usual to search.
"I … don't know Sir." Tony let his eyes go from Sam, and turned baffled back to his suit.
"What do you mean you don't know?" he snapped at his AI buddy.
"I have lost all communication with the satellite and cannot connect to anything, Sir." Tony put his hands down with a serious look on his face.
"What do you mean you can't connect to anything. There's no internet? What about our guys? Can you get in contact with them?" The group watched him talk to the metal suit as if he was crazy, except for the fact that it talked back which in turn made them feel crazy.
"What the hell is going on?" whispered Edd.
"Haven't the faintest idea," said Pyp. Tony winced again from twisting his body too much.
"Perhaps you should rest … ," said Sam trying to defuse the tension. Tony did not trust any of them, and being cut off from any contact scared him the most. He could feel the stress in the air and he needed answers fast.
"Jarvis, close the suit," he ordered. The suit closed and engulfed him, giving life to the metal man. Tony got up from the bed in pain but at least he was armored. He towered over them with his suit. His screens inside his helmet showed the status of it. 50% battery life with some damage to the outside.
"Damnit," Tony muttered under his breath. Mormont pointed his sword at him.
"You are not leaving this room," ordered Lord Commander.
"Talk to the hand," said Tony in a more projected, robotic voice. He put a metal hand up with a glowing light at the palm. A strange high pitched noise came from it and a light shot out forcing him back, breaking down the door. Jon braced himself.
"Oh no you don't" said Pyp who tried to slash him, but Tony blocked his swing, grabbed his arm and threw him at Jon who fell to the ground with a hard thud.
"Get off me!" he snarled underneath. Jon looked up from the ground to see a flash of light and fire appear out of the metal man's feet and hands. Tony blasted himself out of the room. Ghost ran after him. He soared through a hallway until he found an exit and launched himself outside, scaring most of the people, but what scared him even more as he climbed higher was the outside. He gasped at his surroundings, and he had no idea where he was. He saw a huge, towering wall of pure ice and snow several thousand meters high and miles long, horses, men, farm animals, a forge, swords, furs, and finally the dark ominous castle.
"Jarvis … are you seeing this?" he asked gravely inside his helmet.
"Seeing Sir, working on believing," said Jarvis. Jon finally managed to run outside with Mormont, Edd, Pyp, and Sam following behind. The Stark Bastard was working on believing his own eyes when he saw the Iron man hovering there in the air by fire. He reminded him … of a dragon, kissed by gold and fire. Ghost tilted his large head and watched him as well with great curiosity. Tony lowered himself back down to the ground. The men dispersed, leaving a gaping circle on the ground dangerously similar to the portal he fell through. He almost did not want to land. When his boots touched the ground, his boots created a melted circle for him to stand in. He froze but not from the cold. Jon approached him slowly with sword in hand. Tony opened his face plate regrettably. The strong cold, dry air nipped and bit at his skin. Jon stopped when he saw the look of horror plastered on his face. Pyp was about to attack when Jon stopped him. Tony was still trying to get his bearings.
"What is this place?" he finally said in a daze.
"This is Castle Black," said Jon. Tony looked up at the dark castle.
"Uh huh … And where does Castle Black … reside?" he asked. Some of the men grew afraid and restless around them.
"In the north."
Tony became frustrated "Yeah I get that, what I mean is, what city is this?! What place, what town?! What … country?!" he demanded. Tony saw Jon's eyes shift to something behind him. One of the men attacked, but Tony's armor broke the weapon. Tony closed his face plate and hand blasted the guy away. Others approached.
"You want some! COME GET SOME!" he roared putting up both hands.
"No wait! Stop!" Jon said to Tony. Jon walked in front of him and ordered the men to stand down. Tony lowered his hands.
"Go back inside, and we can talk, but you stay out here, these men will fight, and I don't want to lose any men today." Tony didn't know who he could trust, but it seemed like he didn't have a choice. Jon was more afraid if people talked, which he knew they would, word would spread, but slowing that spread was more important.
