Alex came back a few days later with her chest feeling lighter and now more excited about taking this little boy into her home. She understood now why Olivia fell in love with him in the month she had him, he wasn't hard to love. Alex's heart went out to him for the pain he had to go through in his young life with now both of his parents in jail and neither one of them able to get out until he was an adult. She heard the pain in his voice when he talked about his parents but she also heard how grateful he was to have his grandparents that loved him. Alex learned he liked to draw and paint and while that isn't her thing she knew she was going to order canvases and paint for him once he got settled into her home. Alex also learned he liked basketball and she promised him they would play one on one when the weather got better.
Olivia had finished her case by the time Alex got back from Vermont and she couldn't wait to hear how it went. Olivia opened a beer and was sitting down to get leftovers when there was a knock on her door. She sat her food on the coffee table in front of her and muted the TV. When Olivia opened the door it was Alex bundled up with her coat and gloves, November in New York it started to get chilly out. Olivia gave her a soft smile and let her in, when she came in Olivia shut and locked the door behind her. They sat on the couch and Olivia picked up her food and took a bite. Alex picked up Olivia's bottle and took a sip. Olivia swallowed her bite and looked at Alex.
"I wasn't expecting you tonight, didn't you just get back in town?" Olivia asked.
"Yea, I got back in earlier but I wanted to tell you about my trip" Alex told her excitedly.
"Okay, I wanna know everything" Olivia says just as excited.
Alex pulled out her phone and showed her the day she took him to an art museum he wanted to go to. She went through a bunch of pictures of them all over the museum and Calvin's child-like wonder looking at the different paintings. Alex showed her the day she took him tubing at one of the ski lodges there and she showed her a picture of them down at the bottom of the mountain still in the tubes smiling wide with rosey cheeks at the camera. Alex showed her one of Calvin playing in his basketball game she went to with his grandparents.
"It looks like you had a good trip, I'm glad you got to spend some time with him." Olivia tells her eyes shining with joy at each picture Alex showed her.
Alex cupped one side of Olivia's face and smiled at her with love in her eyes.
"I'm really glad we are doing this. I know I've never shown much interest in starting a family but there is no one else I'd rather do this with then you" Alex tells her and leans in to kiss her.
"I love you Liv" Alex whispers against Olivia's lips and then gently kisses her again.
"I love you too Alex" Olivia tells her with a lopsided grin pulling her in for a hug and they lay there basking in the moment of love and joy of what is to come.
The next case they got was a little boy going missing. It was a little over forty eight hours into the investigation before they got a break in the case and found a guy that was hacking into the boy's voicemails. Alex went a little mama bear on him by threatening to go to the Feds if he didn't corroborate. Fin and Munch were in the interrogation room with her. Munch was sassy and sarcastic with the suspect and his lawyer while Fin tried to talk to him seeing how royally pissed off she was at the situation. When the suspect's lawyer asked for Alex's boss she barely kept her cool while she called Cutter. When Cutter got there Cragen, her, the defense attorney, and Cutter all went into his office and tried to make a deal. Alex wasn't backing down; she wanted him to turn over the evidence and go to jail.
The further the investigation went they found out it was two girls from his class that killed him. When Olivia finished the interview with one of the girls and Nick finished with the other they put them in lock up. Olivia called Alex to let her know the case was over with and Alex felt sick when Olivia told her who it was that killed that little boy.
Alex didn't go home after work; she went to one of the cop bars, her and the team frequent after a hard case. She was three vodka cranberries in when Fin showed up by her side. Fin sat next to her and ordered a beer for himself. They sat there in silence until Alex finished her drink and ordered another, she looked at him sipping his beer not saying anything.
Alex scoffed.
"I know what you're doing" Alex slurs.
She probably shouldn't have skipped lunch today.
Fin looks over at her and shrugges taking another sip. " I don't know what you mean"
Alex rolls her eyes.
"Right, so out of the entire bar you just decide to sit next to me?" Alex questioned leaning closer to him.
"I wanted to get a drink, and I saw you. It looks like you need a friend" Fin says, shrugging.
"This case it's just-" Alex shook her head no knowing what to say.
"I get it, these cases they're hard. These girls picked on him because he was different and an outcast. I always think about my son, he's gay and black, it's hard from him out there" Fin tells her.
Alex nodded. She always knew there was a reason she liked him. Alex downed her fourth drink in one go and swayed a little.
Fin stood up and held onto her shoulder.
"How 'bout we go get you some food" He comments and calls for the check for both of their drinks.
When he gets done paying they leave and go to a little diner a few minutes away. Fin hoped the fresh air would help Alex sober up. When they get to the diner, they order the food and Fin gets water for Alex. As Alex is sipping her water she looks Fin over curiously.
"How do you do it?" Alex asked him.
"Do what?" He asked, confused.
"Be a parent, I mean after this case I'm terrified of bringing home a child" Alex says with a quiver in her voice.
Her face was blotchy and her eyes were glazed over from the alcohol.
"You're bringing home a child?" Fin asked casually, she probably didn't mean to say that.
"Yea, Trevor is helping me adopt. He is a great kid but how am I supposed to protect him." Alex explained waving it off.
"Ya know Alex, you just do the best you can. I mean with my son I'm scared for him everyday but I just be there for him when I can" Fin tells her seriously.
Alex nodded. They finish their food in silence and Alex drinks another water before Fin pays the check. He feels confident enough that she's sober to get home okay. Alex gets into a cab and heads to Olivia's instead of home. Alex got to the apartment and knocked on the door. Olivia answered the door in her pajamas , robe and messy hair. Olivia takes in Alex's appearance and steps aside to let her in.
"Hey, you okay?" Olivia asked softly.
Alex shook her head no. Olivia just brought her into her room and handed her a pair of sweatpants and a shirt. Alex changed and they laid there cuddled up together in silence.
The next morning Alex woke up to a cup of water, Ibuprofen, a note and a key sitting on the nightstand. Alex looked around the room and didn't see Olivia anywhere, she took the medicine and drank the water before moving onto the note and held the key in her hand.
' Alex,
I got called into work. The key is for you, keep it.
With love,
Liv '
Alex smiled down at the note and got up to put her new key on her key ring. Alex showered and got dressed. Alex headed to work knowing she was going to have to stop and get coffee, thankful she only had paperwork to do today.
The weekend came and went while Alex was stuck at the office all weekend. Olivia went out and started buying things for Calvin's room. They both facetime him once a week to check in and keep contact with him and his grandparents.
