That Monday morning Olivia made up a date when she and Nick were talking about their weekends. Olivia liked Nick but not enough to tell him about her relationship with their ADA. Olivia couldn't remember the last time she and Alex went on an actual date that wasn't take out or one of them was cooking dinner. Olivia made a mental note to start making date ideas soon. They caught a prostitution case and Alex was the primary ADA on it. Olivia wanted to do a sting to catch the John's so they agreed to do it. They caught an old football player during the course of the investigation but Olivia quickly realized that his mental capacity was declining. After talking to the wife and hearing they needed help because they had no finances to get a defense she handed her Ellis's card. Olivia knew he would help them.
The moment Ellis walked out of interrogation Alex started to get pissed, He baited her telling her to brush up on her Latin. Olivia knew she was doing the right thing even though her girlfriend was upset, she kept quiet and let Alex walk out the room to cool down. The next time Ellis and Olivia see each other is a hypothetical conversation about Olivia being the reason Stanton's wife reached out to him. Once the trial started Alex was so consumed with preparing for it they didn't really have time to spend together. The only time they saw each other was while court was in session. After a long day in court where Ellis showed Stanton memory wasn't all there they finally called it a day. Olivia and Alex walked to the elevator together while Alex talked about how ugly that was with Stanton on the stand.
"Ellis is just doing his job, Stanton isn't competent, I tried to warn you" Olivia sighs out.
"Warn me? You walked me right into it! YOU wanted a sting operation, YOU wanted to prosecute all the johns" Alex says angrily
"The guilty ones" Olivia counters back
"You don't get to cherry pick, what are we supposed to do, prosecute some of the John's and not Stanton? What kind of message does that send, the DAs office gives sports stars a free pass? You want justice for her and compassion for him, you can't have it both ways Olivia the world doesn't work that way. And I don't even want to know how Ellis showed up in your squad room " Alex angrily says, stepping into the elevator leaving Olivia alone as the doors shut.
Olivia doesn't see Alex until court the next day while they are waiting for the jury's decision, they find Stanton not guilty. Alex walked right past Olivia, upset at herself she didn't win, that she didn't do better. Olivia and Nick are outside the courthouse.
"I didn't know what to say to her father" Nick says to Olivia.
"No one wins here" Olivia tells him, giving him a half-hearted look.
As they watch the press conference Stanton grabs a gun and everyone runs away while Olivia and Nick run toward him guns drawn. They think they talk him down and lower their weapons until he shoots himself in the chest. They watch the wife cry holding her husband. Olivia holsters her gun and calls for an ambulance knowing it's too late. A few hours later after the crime scene is secured she heads to the flower shop to try and apologize to Alex.
Olivia knocks on Alex's door with the flowers in her hands. Alex opens it holding a glass of wine in one hand and the other on the door. Alex raises her eyebrows at her.
"I'm sorry, these are for you" Olivia says, holding out the flowers for Alex to hold.
Alex takes them and smells them with a faint smile crossing her lips.
"I'm still mad" Alex says mumbling.
Olivia nods understandingly.
"I know" Olivia admits.
Alex opens the door further and lets her in.
It's early December and Olivia and Alex finally get the date Olivia has been planning for weeks. They go out to dinner and see a show that they have wanted to see. They stop at Rockefeller and watch people skate. Olivia hasn't skated in years and Alex has been so swamped with work they haven't gotten a chance to get out and it's nice to finally get out again.
"Do it again" Olivia asks smiling
"Yea" Alex says, hoping they get to do it more frequently than every other month when they have the chance.
Olivia gets called into work and Alex goes with her to the crime scene. Fin shows up next, surprised to see Alex already there.
"Little early in the game for you isn't it, counselor" Fin comments.
"I was in the neighborhood" Alex smiles, commenting back.
Fin looks at her debating on if he believes that or not.
"Benson with the vic? " Fin asks
"Ambulance is on it's way" Alex comments back and introduces Fin to the director of the show.
They talk to him while Olivia interviews the victim.
Olivia comes back out from interviewing her and she talks to the director and then they all leave to go start the investigation. They head outside and Fin leaves to go to the precinct. Olivia casually stands next to Alex hailing a cab, once Fin is out of sight Olivia kisses her and shuts the cab door. She catches the next cab and heads off to the precinct too.
Alex gets a call towards the end of the investigation from Trevor that the Vermont courts signed off on the adoption and it has been transferred to New York. He set up a court date for her and Olivia to sign the papers to make it official. As soon as Olivia walks into Alex's apartment that night with tai takeout she already has a bottle of wine opened and hands her a glass.
"What's this for?" Olivia asks, setting down the food on the table.
"Trevor called Vermont, signed off on the adoption and it's been transferred to New York! All we have to do is go into the courthouse and sign the papers with family court and he's ours!" Alex tells her excitedly, smiling wide.
Olivia sets down her glass of wine and picks Alex up spinning her
"Oh my God, that's great!" Olivia replied back exhaling excitedly.
Alex has her arms around Olivia's neck laughing.
Olivia sets her down kissing her soundly.
"We're doing this" Olivia says breathy
Alex nodded back smiling
" we're doing this" Alex confirmed
