There were other news. In February, some of us were busted by the po-po for attacking these weirdos calling themselves the People for Interspecies Tolerance, who actually wanted to live in peace with these busters. Mr. Castaway had to disavow them and even paid these fools compensation for their trouble. And in March, the po-po actually arrested one of the gargoyles for robbin' a jewelry store. There was this big trial and shit.
He managed to get off by exposing the real thief.
In any event, there was this thing that happened in April. George's little bro, Rich, came by to visit. he normally attends college in the other side of the country. I met him before sometime in January; he helped out around the office and served as a lookout one one of ourm missions. He looked as I remember him, a little bit like his brother, with brown hair and glasses. Anyway, now that her was here, George had a plan.
"We need to deny the gargoyles cover," he said, in this room in the brownstone that we call the briefing room. "This statuiary garden's a good place to start; our intel spotted gargoyles frequently gliding over the area. All right then."
"I don't know," said Rich, who was wearing the Quarryman armor.
"Stick by Cedric," said George.
"I got your back," i said, patting Rich on the shoulder. One of the other Quarrymen- I think it was Jack Dane- handed him a hammer.
So we all hopped into this van and went to the address where the building was.
One of us, this young lady named Heather, went out in street clothes. She went and spoke to the guard. We waited.
After that, she reparerared, dressed in her night blue robe and hood.
"Just stick with me, homie," I said to Rich.
We all went up the stairs. A whole bunch of us were up at top, with heather securing our escape route.
"I wonder if we should be doing this," said Rich.
"Your bro's a smart G," I said, tapping my head. "We need to take away any hiding spot these busters might wanna use."
I pumped my hammer and it crackled with electricity. I swung my hammer at one of the statues and it shattered. I went out and smashed another one that looked like a demon.
I loked at Rich, who was standing by this statue of a man.
"You know how to pump the hammer," I said.
And so he did.
"All right, take a swing."
"I..I don't know."
"Don't worry. We're your homies up here, we're your gang."
He made his swing.
and suddenly, there was thuis loud bang and this explosion.
he just disappeared.
I rushed over the edge of the rooftop.
I couldn't see him.
"We have to stop!" i yelled. "Quarryman down! He fell down that roof!"
All of us went down to ground level and we went around the building. On the alley, I could see pieces of statues that we shattered.
There was no Rich.
"Let's get back in the van," I said. I made sure to take off my armor and hood once we got in there. we drove for a block.
"All right, I'll dial 911," I said. I went to a pay phone next to a Greek deli market and made the phone call, telling the operator I saw an explosion and saw a man fall off the roof.
I looked at Jack Dane, who was driving the van. "Shake the spot and head back to base," I said. "Tell George I'm still here to look for his brother."
He drove the van away. I went back to a spot across the street from where the statuary garden was. Soon enough, police and an ambulance showed up.
I had to be here. I had to see them take the body bag.
I couldn't believe it. Rich relied on me.
George relied on me.
After maybe half an hour, the ambulance left wuithout anyone being loaded onto it. I walked up to the police officers. while I wasn't a fan of cops, they shouldn't have a problem with me for now.
"What happened?" I asked. "Was someone killed or somethin'?"
"No," answered one of the cops. "We got a call that someone saw a body fall from the roof here, but we found no one. We're still here to find some clues, but we found no one hurt nor dead."
"Oh," I said. I didn't want to say I was up on that building destroying statues.
I went back to my crib. I just lay there, wondering how someone could just disappear.
It didn't make sense!
Anyways, I just had to sleep on it.
