Chapter Four: The Lasso Of Truth And The Great War.
After a not so sound night, they stood in large area and Hippolyta looked down at Steve, who had a glowing golden lasso tied around his body. The Lasso Of Hesstia had the ability to force a person to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. In his pocket Jerry was under it's spell, for a loop was around him as well. He felt sweat roll down his forehead as he moved about a bit.
"Now we'll find out who you two really are." signed Tom, squinting his eyes and rubbing his paw together eagerly.
"Where do you come from? And what are you doing here?" questioned Hippolyta, staring down at Steve.
He was silent, but soon found it hard to keep from talking. Slowly, he started to sweat as the lasso's power became too much to handle. "I'm-I'm a, a spy! I'm a spy for the London Supreme War Council. I was sent to get information," Steve gasped for breath. "God this thing is hot."
"War Council?"
"War? Yeah right, Ares is dead. Zeus killed him, there is no way a war could exist without the god of war." signed Tom before folding his arms over his chest, shaking his head.
"It's the war to end all wars. I was sent on a mission to find where Isabel Maru's laboratory was. The boys in the trench call her Doctor poison. If she succeeds in creating the mustard gas, the deadliest gas ever made, millions will die and the war would never end." said Steve to a shocked Diana, who's eyes were wide. Tom's frown formed to worry, he and Diana sharing a quick glance before turning back to Steve. "I was undercover and-"
Steve strolled in with a group of Germans to the warehouse, dressed like one of them, blending in perfectly. The warehouse was where Maru was testing her latest mixture, in a laboratory built special for her, by General Erich Ludendorff. The General and her shared the same desire, to kill anyone who saw as an enemy to their country. Ludendorff had the money, while Maru had the knowledge and skillset, making them the perfect, and deadliest team.
Steve went thought and caught sight of the scientist, Isabel Maru, who wore a mask on her lower left jaw, due to some accident he assumed. General Ludendorff and Maru shut the door behind them, but Steve walked over and opened it just enough for the mouse to fit through. Jerry hurried to get what they were after, a book containing all Maru's ideas. Jerry shimmied up the table leg when he heard the two talking about her latest creation, one they hoped would crush the gas mask. From his spot on the table, Jerry saw a man behind a glass cell with a gas mask on his head. He was chained to the wall and seemed terrified as to what was happening around him. With a flip of the lever there was the sound of hissing, gas seeped into the cell and the prisoner screamed out in pain. Jerry cringed as the man's cries of agony filled the two humans with joy. After a while of watching the man struggle, the two were unhappy with the result and dropped his body down a trap door.
"I can't get it right. I'll never get it done in time." said Maru, clenching her gloved hands into fist.
"Maru, I believe in you, I know you can do this. You have not let me down this far."
"By the way, I made you more God-Pills," hissed Maru, holding up a bottle full of pills.
"Oh, Maru, you are an amazing woman."
Seeing the pair get close, Jerry grabbed the book and made his way back to Steve, exiting the small room. Steve leaned down and lowered his hand for Jerry to climb on. Jerry jumped into Steve's palm and wanted to get as far away as possible. On the inside of the room, Maru went for her book to see why it had failed, but saw it was missing. With panic expression, she glanced up to see Steve walk briskly away. "My book is gone, it has all my notes and everything! Without it I have nothing."
"What, how?" Ludendorff joined her and looked from her to the back of the fleeing man. He clenched his jaw and was filled with rage.
Steve tucked the book in his coat pocket and heard the siren go off, letting everyone know there was a spy among them. Steve ran to the closet plane and slid under the wing before standing and pulling the pilot out of the cockpit. He got in it and took off, flying above the warehouse. Jerry plucked a hand grenade out of his coat and held it up for Steve, who pulled the pin. They flew upside down and over the laboratory, Jerry dropping the grenade. It fell through the glass ceiling and landed dead center, where it went off, engulfing the place in a sea of flames. Maru had been safe outside when the explosion went off, watching the building burn in the flicker of light, seeing a cloud of smoke form in the air above. In the air Steve smiled and shook Jerry's paw, congratulating their little victory. It was short lived as they were soon followed by the Germans.
Jerry looked to Steve, finding they were no longer in the plane, but being interrogated. With their story done, Steve went on. "Who ever you are. You are in more danger then you know. No one will be safe. Even now, women, children, are suffering. If we win the suffering will stop. Will you help us, please. Steve glanced around with pleading eyes. Everyone was silent, looking about at each other, uncertain of what to do.
Hippolyta was thoughtful, letting out a deep sigh. "No, I'm afraid we cannot do anything for you." Hippolyta held her hand up to silence two in particular. Diana and Tom turned to her with confusion, wondering why they weren't going to help. "Take him to a cell and we'll decide his fate latter."
With that said, Steve was lifted to his feet and escorted out by two soldiers. Steve glanced back over his shoulder to met with Diana's brown eyes before leaving with the soldiers. Diana looked from the trio to her mother. "Mother, we have to do something. Families are suffering. We were created to help mankind, and they need us now more then ever."
Diana tried to get her mother to reconsider, following her out of the room. "My decision is finale." They walked out of the large hall to a stairway, followed by Tom, who hated the thought of innocent suffering because of the Great War.
"But mother, we were created to help guide human kind."
"We can do it again." Tom added.
"Diana, Tom, I said no and that is in my final answer. Why don't you and Tom go train or something."
"But mother."
"Enough Diana, now go." Hippolyta left, the pair looking from her to each other.
"That went well," signed Tom.
"Let's go talk to our guest, Tom." Diana walked away, Tom jogging along beside her.
"So, we're going against your mother's wishes, which will end with us getting in trouble, right?"
"Exactly."
With a shrug, he nodded. "Eh, what else is new."
"Come on, I saw the way you looked at that mouse." Diana teased, bumping him with her hip.
"With disgust." He nudged her back, being shoved into the grass.
"Admit it, you find him cute."
"Yeah, well, you had groggily eyes for Mr. man."
"Did no."
"Did too."
"Stubborn."
"Mule."
They continued their back and froth conversation, shoving one another and laughing all the way.
