Epilogue: Go The Distance.
How long ago it seemed, the great war to end all wars. There'd always be fighting, in the past, present, and future, battles yet to be known. Time marched on and all of those Tom met in 1918, were long gone, leaving him and Diana. While being immortal had it's perks, it was also a very lonely, and unfulfilling life at time. But somehow, Tom tried to find the good in humanity.
"I used to what end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness in their light. I learned that inside everyone of them, there will always be both. The choice each one must make for themselves. Something no hero will ever defeat. I also learned a lot about myself, and what I truly stand for. I won't loose sight of that ever again."
It was a beautiful day, Diana and Tom walked down the street. They wore modern clothes, and passed several shops, stopping by to grab a cup of coffee and of course a doughnut for Tom. Paying, Diana passed Tom his drink and snack. "Honestly Tom, you need to lay off the sweets."
Tom glanced down and lifted his shirt, revealing a set of abs. "Nah, I think I'm good."
Rolling her eyes, Diana laughed. "Show off."
They came to the place of business Diana worked, and made their way to the entrance. Walking, Tom saw a vehicle parked with the word WAYNE ENTERPRISE written in white on the side of it. With an arched brow, he watched with a curious gaze. Two men worked to open the double door, and pulled a briefcase out, taking it to the building. He shook it off and took a sip from his cup, taking a bite from his doughnut. "Bless the gods for modern food." Tom said while he moaned, enjoying the delightful flavor.
Down a flight of steps they went, Tom going to his small desk, looking over some new artifacts they got in. Diana worked at her own desk, her space was a bit more organized compared to Tom's messy one. Around them were shelves with ancient swords, and shields and other objects they collected over the years. Tom was by her side when a man came in, passing her a suitcase. She thanked him and took it, getting ready to open it.
"What is it? What is it?" Tom inquired.
"Tom, always so curious. You know what happened to the curious cat?"
"Yeah, but he wasn't a god like me."
"I knew the title would go to your head."
She turned from Tom to the suitcase, lifting the lid slowly. What she saw took her breath away, causing her hands to tremble. Tom glanced from her face to the item inside. What he saw made his heart skip a beat, eyes growing wide with astonishment. Tucked away with care was the picture of them in the village of Veld, those many, many years ago. In the upper right part was a note, written in fancy writing. Diana carefully lifted the glass picture and let Tom take a look at it. He put his paw to his chin, seeing the face of Jerry. Running his fingers over it, he slumped down while Diana went to her draw, pulling out Steve's old watch and holding it close to her heart. She set the watch aside and responded to an email she'd received that morning.
She smiled over to Tom, who nodded. "This is our mission now, forever."
Tom smiled and followed her out, going over to a set of armor. Later that evening they stepped out in their warrior outfits, ready to fight for good, and defeat evil that loomed ahead. Diana flew forward, going gracefully form building to building. With a great bound, Tom leaped across the city, to the horizon, and to his future. It was bleak, but it was worth fighting for.
(Go the Distance from Hercules)
Tom:
"I have often dreamed of a far off place,
Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me,
Where the crowds will cheer when they see my face,
And a voice keeps saying, "this where I'm meant to be,"
I'll be there someday, I can go the distance,
I will find my way, if I can be strong,
I know every mile, will be worth my while,
When I go the distance, I'll be right where I belong,
Down an unknown road, to embrace my fate,
Though that road may wonder, it will lead me to you,
And a thousand years, would be worth the wait,
It might take a life time, but somehow I'll see it through,
And I won't look back, I can go the distance,
I will stay on track, no I won't except defeat,
It's un uphill slop, but I won't loose hope,
Till I go the distance, and my journey is complete,
But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part,
For a hearo's strength is measure by heart,
Like a shooting star, I will go the distance,
I will search the world, I will face it's harms,
I don't care how far, I can go the distance,
Till I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms."
