Chapter 5: Spite

Nothing concrete came of the meeting with the jinchuuriki. Naruto was rescued by his father, who interrupted the meeting after being told by another Uchiha where Naruto had been summoned.

He criticized the clan for trying to come up with a solution by themselves and told them that they should involve the village in the matter before whisking them both away.

Disbanding, Itachi and Sasuke walked over to the 2 bedroom apartment they had traded their large manor home for, as Sasuke had begun to feel uncomfortable in their childhood home when it was just the two of them. It was also after Itachi had passed on becoming clan leader after their father, as he felt like he was too young to maintain the Uchiha ideals and his views were too pessimistic.

It was later decided that their older cousin, Shisui, would become clan leader, and he decided to move into the manor and let the brothers choose which type of residence they would like to occupy.

The smaller living space was good for both brothers who ended up forming a larger bond, being each other's only close family left, and Sasuke promised Itachi that he wouldn't take any unnecessary risks while away on missions. They used to be rivals, as Itachi had been considered a genius, whereas Sasuke ended up being ordinary. After their parents passed on, Itachi confronted Sasuke on the matter and ensured that he understood that it didn't matter that their abilities were different. Sasuke had his own talents and would surpass him in his own way in his own time.

Itachi was suspicious of the strange kidnappings as of late, and wondered if it was possible for the kitsune to hunt outside of Konoha's regions, like on the border of sand. If so, this would be her second encounter with Sasuke, and he was still in the range of being a child, that he could be spirited away if he let his guard down. Being around Naruto really helped, but now that they were back home, could she get in the village? She had withstood a good amount of proximity before fleeing Naruto this time, and that fact alone was worrisome.

Itachi began planning for a time when he would no longer be able to protect his brother anymore. Also he should consult with Shisui. Now that Kushina had lost her twins, she would harbor much anger towards the two of them since Itachi was Naruto's sensei and Sasuke, his teammate.

Yotsuna regained some strength from eating some children's souls that she had recently kidnapped. They were both Uchiha children she had stolen and stored while she made a trip to her human hometown in the remote wilderness.

It had been a long time since she last visited, but souls were less frequent as of late, and it was easy pickings somewhere new.

Hmph. She didn't notice how old the current retainer of the bijuu was until she encountered him and his little friends in the woods in this region. Of course the village would hire ninja to scope out her feeding grounds. Given the distance, she thought it would have been easier for them to ask the other ninja in the desert to assist them, for they were technically closer in distance but this village, she supposed, was still in the land of Fire.

Besides getting fried by the nine tails, she had only stuck around because she noticed two things. One, her soul from her human existence had reincarnated into another human, pink haired and jaded eyed like before. Two, her friends were the bijuu and a boy who looked exactly like the man who had killed her… oh, the irony and gut wrenching karma…

She did like the fact that she had another chance in killing the one who had tormented her for eternity once again. It also bothered her that her 'soul' had moved on…

Wait… her soul had moved onto another human body… she grinned devilishly.

There weren't very many circumstances where a human body was potentially compatible with her spirit, but her reincarnation was perfect, except her age… she looked childlike still, just on the cusp of adolescence and that bothered her… she wasn't old enough yet fit be her retainer.

Hmm. She would ponder this new dilemma.

Sakura couldn't sleep. She was too worried about Naruto going with the Uchiha brothers back to the clan… She had noticed the way Naruto's mother had stared at him when they arrived back at the village's gate, and it wasn't adoring.

Hmph, just in case her hunch was right, Sakura decided to sneak out and go to the one spot she was sure Naruto would venture off too if he wanted to be alone.

She knew it was outside of the village's protection, so when she crossed the threshold into the forest, she brought her kunai pouch and was more wary of her surroundings as she trudged through the high grass towards her destination, Naruto's treehouse.

Arriving, she threw a kunai to the rope ladder, and it came cascading downward before she lifted herself up and climbed up, pulling it with her as she ascended.

Like she predicted, Naruto was here and huddled in a blanket he had brought from home.

She didn't bother saying anything but walked over to him and sat down and cuddled up to him as he was already curled up and crying.

"...Sakura?" he mumbled, embarrassed now.

"Shh, it isn't ok. Being rejected by your mother isn't normal," she coaxed him as new tears sprung up.

"I never understood what was wrong with me existing?" he muttered weakly.

"Nothing. You were meant to be born, and she just lost the opportunity in getting to know someone so awesome that one day she will regret her decision," Sakura told him with such certainty that he began to feel slightly better.

Snuggling together, they spent the night out at the treehouse.

A/N: Awe Naruto ;( even with his dad alive, he still is going through some hardships. Sakura is such a trooper in being the best friend, though she was alone at first. And yes I know there is no Ita/Saku yet but this is Sakura's childhood so you know gotta build up that background story. Also thanks to cherry for proofreading this for me.
