Chapter 11: Loop

History told children about a great war and a pandemic that followed it.

Details varied, but every version announced the end of the world as they knew it, and the shinobi era came to an end. Villages were then slowly converted into cities and the modern age began…

Konoha was a bustling metropolis with buildings rising into the skies above as citizens went about their daily lives.

Itachi inserted his key and the door swung open to an empty apartment.

Waving his arms in excitement, he gestured to the possibilities.

"We could create a nice reading nook here, and the kitchen has space to make a bar countertop like you imagined on your creative board," he rambled excitedly.

The woman behind him entered the space and tilted her head at his suggestions, some of them were hers. She soaked up what actual space they had. It was not the same experience when they were looking at it in pictures through the realtor.

"I thought it was going to be more… open floor plan," she mumbled, a bit disappointed but not wanting to discourage her husband, who looked at her with a slight frown.

"Sakura… love, this is the fifth apartment we have toured this week. We have to choose something before we start our new jobs next week," he said wearily.

She sauntered up to him with a smile and wrapped her arms around his neck and planted a big kiss on him before shaking her head.

"I know, forgive my misforgivings. You're right though. Out of what we've seen so far I like this one the most," she admitted, going over to the corner where he envisioned them creating a cute nook.

A smile crept back onto Itachi's face as he wrapped his arms around her waist, and they went tumbling to the floor in a playful heap.

Sasuke and Naruto met up for lunch like they did once a month since university.

"So, I heard that Itachi accepted the associate professor of archeology position at Konoha University, and Sakura-chan is beginning a position as a veterinarian assistant," Naruto commented, relaying what their mutual friend Shikamaru had told him early in the week.

"Yes, Itachi and Sakura are moving back from their jaunt in Iwa city," Sasuke confirmed while sipping his late morning coffee.

"Teme, you need to calm down your caffeine habits," Naruto complained, waving over the waitress and demanding a pitcher of water for the both of them.

Sasuke huffed before turning the tables on Naruto and his poor nutrition choices in cup ramen. He should consider their lunches a treat, for he didn't know when he had anything else healthy during the rest of the day.

Naruto scoffed at him, pointing out that Hinata prepared all of his lunches except on Tuesday, because she had to leave before him and wasn't home earlier enough on the night before, so he told her that he would look after food for himself one day out of the entire week.

Sasuke agreed that his counterargument was weak.

Yotsuna grew weaker by the day… she had been forced from Sakura's consciousness when she passed away. When she tried to move onto her reincarnation, she was unable to morph completely into the living realm… ninja were no more, and she required her vessel to have chakra, which no humans remaining in the world possessed.

Sakura's next incarnation was still marked by her curse, but she lay dormant in her subconscious. It took Yotsuna years to come up with a way of repossessing her next vessel, but she found out she could conserve a small pool of her own chakra over time that she could use to take over this reincarnation like her previous life. The amount of time it would take from her coming into existence was going to be 25 human years.

Itachi and Sakura were childhood sweethearts. Sakura met Sasuke first when they entered preschool, and over the years she had interacted with his older brother Itachi. Most people would have guessed that Sakura would have fallin in love with Sasuke since they became such good friends, but he could tell from a younger age how well her and Itachi just clicked that he insisted on staying just friends.

From the time Sakura was 5, she had a weird birthmark on her wrist and it could never be explained from where it came from.

Itachi thought he was the first one to fall in love when he turned 14, and Sakura was 9. She was still young and he knew that they couldn't have a romantic connection, but he did admire her lofty and bright spirit.

Years passed, and he watched over the trio of friends. In middle school, Sakura had befriended the mayor's son, Naruto, and Sasuke reluctantly agreed to being his friend, as they were complete opposites, but with Sakura being their buffer, they agreed that they could get along.

They stayed good friends throughout their time in school.

Itachi, being 5 years older than Sasuke and Sakura, went into university first, and it was when he graduated at 23 that he decided to propose. He would wait for her to be legal age, but for some time now, Itachi was worried that Sakura had limited time left on this earth. For an entire decade, he had been plagued by dreams of her dying young, but he didn't know the cause… yet.

When he was younger, he dreamed of becoming a lawyer and defending people and fighting injustice, but when the nightmares bgan, he switched his focus and decided to do a career in Archeology. Perhaps something from the distant past would help him solve Sakura's apparent doom in the modern age.

They had spoken at length about it, and Sakura wondered if perhaps the Uchiha family suffered from bi-polar disorder in their family history. Not that she wanted to doubt him, but she didn't think she was going to die young, like Itachi was dreading. She even almost declined his proposal when she was18 because she thought they were too young… It wasn't until her 19th birthday when the birthmark on her arm gained abnormal coloring overnight that she had been convinced that Itachi was onto something even beyond her.

They consulted medical professionals, but no one could tell her anything was wrong. But the marking was unusual, and birthmarks typically never changed colors in one's lifetime.

Sakura graduated University with honors, as expected. She had wanted to go into being a doctor, but when she started in her post secondary education, she saw one of her friends who was studying in veterinary studies. Something clicked for her, and she changed her major. Naruto was supportive, but Sasuke wondered if she would make as much money, to which Sakura told him that it didn't matter if she was unhappy in the work she had chosen to do.

The happy couple had a small ceremony with only close friends and immediate family. Sakura still didn't want to rush ahead with a marriage to the man she loved, but she couldn't deny that he knew something was coming, and they didn't know how much time exactly she had before whatever it was would occur.

Itachi held off on graduate school while she was in her undergrad and supported her financially. They rented a two bedroom condo in the outskirts of the downtown hub, and for the first two years they were content and optimistic.

It wasn't until Sakura's third year that there were signs that the birthmark had grown darker on her skin. Itachi insisted they move to Iwa so he could excavate some ruins, as his research had led him out of the country of Fire's territory.

Sasuke and Naruto were the only two outsiders that knew of Sakura's condition, and they wondered if the Uchiha couple were worrying over nothing?.Naruto didn't feel like Sakura was going to die per say, and Sasuke thought the whole thing was ridiculous.

It wasn't until Naruto took a distant class of Konoha's past that he began to question her about her lineage.

According to his studies, during the era of the 7th Hokage, Uzumaki Naruto…. Weirdly similar to his name, but he has his father's surname and his mother was also named Uzumaki…he read that as a child, he was placed on a three man team with two others, one an Uchiha and the other a Haruno…

Sakura did know that their family did descend from a branch of what was the Haruno family. They had relatives that became ninja once, but her ancestors took on trades for a living…

"Did that Haruno have any descendants?" asked Sasuke, tuning into the conversation.

"Uh… unfortunately there isn't much information on what happened to her, but it does sound like from the Hokage's memoir, that maybe she died before he became leader of the village?" Naruto went on.

"Beloved friend?" Sakura read the text that Naruto opened before he started his explanation.

Sakura flipped through the text and went over what other information was available. The Naruto of the past was placed under a Jonin by the name of Itachi… and his younger brother, Sasuke was his other teammate… She dropped the text and held her head in pain suddenly.

"Sakura?!" the two men proclaimed, forgetting all that they just read.

Itachi came over from the other side of campus where he was studying as soon as Sasuke let him know what had happened.

He would take her home and look over her.

Before he left, he requested the textbook. The trio had uncovered the missing clue as to what Itachi may have been searching for. A timeline of something in the past that may be affecting their present situation. Like Sasuke, Itachi didn't quite believe in fate and past lives, but if something from then could save his wife from the present… he would be willing to believe in anything.

A/N: So this begins the final timeline, reminding us that there are three time periods interwoven in this story: the past is the era of the 1st Hokage, the "present" the era of the 5th Hokage and the Future, modern time Konoha. It's gonna get a bit confusing, but I will try to keep it easy to figure out.

Also, I was looking forward to writing about married couple Itachi and Sakura 3 which is two different Sakura and Itachi than present day shinobi teacher/student Sakura and Itachi.
