Chapter 3 Hero Syndrome

It's been days, chaos was spreading to outer cities as escapees ventured further. Citizens were getting rounded up like livestock into shelters, leaving the streets to the stubborn and criminal. Overhaul scowled impatiently as the woman took her time in gathering her intel on the spread of heroes and authorities. Within the days, they came across more escapees – but this time these were more cooperative, willing to be Nagant's eyes and ears as they scope out the area for their target.

Overhaul sat on the skyscraper, waiting for Nagant to confirm his identification of the boy. She took in the boy's appearance, confirming the description down to the hero costume. "Target confirmed." Nagant remarked, setting her sights on the boy in green.

"Then get on with it." Overhaul snapped – getting more impatient the longer the woman didn't take her shot to paralyze the brat. The objective was to bring him back alive, that didn't mean fully intact…

Overhaul narrowed his eyes as the woman took her shot and she spoke into a headset, "Young boy in green, we will take you with us. Follow my orders and… I'll leave your limbs attached."

Nagant studied her scope noticing the boy decided to move against his best interest, "You moved…" She took another shot to get the boy to understand that he's out of options.

Overhaul snapped, "Stop playing around and just paralyze him. Don't waste our time."

Nagant tsked as the boy wouldn't back down, This boy is crazy… no wonder All for One wants him. Angerly, she reloaded, "This is the first time someone deflected two of my bullets…"

"I told you to stop playing around." Overhaul scowled at the woman as she took more shots, "Don't you go back on our deal, you told me you were going to take me to see the Boss when I showed you the kid –."

Nagant tsked seeing the boy heading their way, and turned to Overhaul pulling on his sleeve, "Yes! I will once we're done here. Now go hide in the fire escape, the target is coming this way."

Overhaul glared at her as she threw open the door and shoved him into the stairway. She better hold up her end! He put his back against the wall, sliding down to sit on the floor. The door shut harshly; he narrowed his eyes further staring off to the opposite wall and waited.

Nagant focused back to the mission at hand once she confirmed Chisaki was secured inside and out of sight from their target. She made her move, using the quirk All for One gave her for this exact purpose. The boy would think she would be stationary – that miscalculation is going to hurt.

She shot him, and cursed when the boy was able to kick the bullet. You aren't going to get away. She took another shot hitting him in the side when he was too occupied with the shot before. Nagant jumped off the ledge once more and proceeded with Air Walk, changing her position to get a better drop on him now that he was hit.

She jumped through the air, shooting at the location he had been before, predicting where his next move will be. Nagant narrowed her eyes as the boy disappeared in a screen of smoke that rolled onto the streets below. Huh? Another quirk…? She looked through her scope, her sight hindered by the smoke. I can't see anything, but once he moves through the smoke I can hit him…

Instinctively, she fired seeing slight movement within the smoke, when the smoke cleared from the speed of the bullet, she noticed an article of clothing was hit. A decoy?! She shot multiple times again when there was a disturbance within the smoke and each time was another decoy. "How annoying! You can't hide in the smoke and expect you can get away!"

She froze feeling a presence just from below her, "As if I was hiding!" The boy broke through the roof of a building to catch her off guard. She grunted as he attempted to restrain her. The boy twisted her arm to her back, "I didn't expect a sniper to come at me so close, I got you now and I will make you give me information on All for One!"

Cocky brat… "Don't act like you have won!" Nagant shifted her weight and slammed the butt end of her rifle into his stomach and flipped around to kick him in the face. That slight distance made him in her cross hairs at point blank, "You think I will talk? I was trained for every situation within the Safety Commission."

The boy dodged the brunt of the damage from the bullet as he plummeted to the ground, flinging himself to cover, "Why would you side with All for One? He's aiming for world domination! Aren't you supposed to be a hero?!"

Nagant felt rage run through her by the question. The deep unsettledness of the façade of what the term hero was supposed to be. That a naïve child was lecturing her what a hero was meant to be. She was fed up by the lies and the brainwashing this society had created amongst citizens. She silently walked through the air, making her next move, "Some can't see past the justice that hero society created… People that follow blindly will never understand." Nagant took a shot just short of his hip bone as it grazed him.

She attached a speaker to her bullet to distract the boy from locating her whereabouts. She spoke through the mic, "I'm tired." She took more shots, the boy seemed to effortlessly dodge everything she shot at him, "I've killed enough to preserve this fake society of ours." Nagant pushed down the thought of the countless of faces that began to blur together by the amount of people she had killed. All those lives that were snuffed out without a trial nor publicity – just a body bag, and poof they just disappear.

Nagant kept taking her shots, figuring she could try to get the boy to understand that there is nothing great about being a hero. Everything was fake, society wasn't as safe as the Commission wanted everyone to believe – and they were willing to do anything to keep that façade going… It didn't matter to them of the damage they would do to a person, run a person tired and dry with the endless bloodshed to protect the illusion of society. To work her to the bone to the point where she can't determine what was considered right or wrong – where that ember of life to preserve society was ultimately burnt out.

Nagant kept taking shots, never missing a beat with each bloody flashback of people begging for their lives – heroes, villains, civilians, their blood coated her to the point where she could never wash that stain from her skin. It gutted her, emotionally detached her from life with each and every recoil her rifle had rippled through her. The fake smiles on the surface for the public to see, children eagerly wanting to shake a hand of a mass murderer… The society everyone envisions and admires is weak and fragile, it will be an endless cycle and she wanted to stop it. All for One's society will at least be real and transparent – there will be no hiding the truth and the ugliness of the world. The bad would be expected, there was no hiding – no sugarcoating the truth. Even with All for One's ultimatum, it was better than making more fools and liars out of people within this hero society.

And she will not let a boy that has super hero fantasies faulter her in what she already knows. She won't let it…

Overhaul shut his eyes taking a deep breath as his mind raced through on what was at stake here, he just needed to see Pops to make sure the authorities were keeping him comfortable. He wanted to get everything off his chest, all these emotions that assaulted him and plagued him through prison to the point of making him insane – he needed to apologize. Apologize for being a failure as his protégé to run the Yakuza, a failure as a son.

Overhaul took deep breaths, he was close – once the kid was caught, then it would be his turn to get what was owed to him from their deal. Each shot that sounded within the fire escape, chipped away his patience – She isn't fully committed. Rage trickled through him as that thought kept repeating itself with every supposed misfire. She isn't capable. He opened his eyes, turning back to the door and kicked at it until it flung open.

Gold eyes burned lividly seeing the woman floating in the air dodging the green haired brat's attempts to grab her. She better not lose. Overhaul stepped on the ledge screaming at the woman, "You still aren't done yet?! Hurry up and fulfill our deal! I kept my end, so you better do yours!" He glared at her darkly, for a moment their eyes made contact – Don't you dare go against our deal! His eyes caught the shift of her rifle, his mind was slower to register her intentions. She fired her shot at him, his mind registered the betrayal, How dare –.

Overhaul grunted in pain as something knocked him off the ledge and onto the roof. His gold eyes stared at the boy in green – the same boy that ruined his operations, the same boy that spewed about heroism.

The boy gave him one look, before launching back into action he remarked, "We aren't done yet Chisaki."

Overhaul felt a wave of emotions strike him, hearing that boy's voice again. No, don't take anything else from me. His breaths hitched feeling dread crashing down on him as though history was going to repeat itself – that he will be just short of reaching Pops again. Don't do this to me, just let me reach him.

He turned his gaze towards where the boy launched himself – his body froze seeing Nagant's rifle arm broken – No, you can't lose. He stared at the scene before him, just watching the woman give up as she started to plummet to the streets below. No… not again… He held his breath as an explosion erupted within the area where Nagant and the green haired brat was last seen – hoping for some chance the woman had a final trap set out.

"Hey…wait." Overhaul muttered staring at the fire and smoke fumes that escaped above the sky scrapers. Don't tell me… Overhaul slumped forward, resting his head to his knees. It all came down to who was the better poker face amongst villains, and it had appeared Lady Nagant was tested on that front. He closed his eyes; he should have known. You can't stop what you are… and All for One played his cards on Nagant's inability to take the hero out of her. That lent quirk was insurance, a failsafe to ensure All for One would always come out as the victor in every scenario.

This can't be happening, not again! Overhaul crunch his eyes shut; emotions were suffocating him with the utter despair. The crushing sensation crashed into him, imageable pain he had ever felt within himself by being captured again – losing his chance to see Pops ever again.

Overhaul went ridged when the Flame Hero Endeavor flew straight at him, No… The hero grabbed him by the waist, bringing him down to the street. Frantically he checked his surroundings, noticing the hero was dropping him near the green haired boy – his gold eyes signaled in on the charred woman.

He gritted his teeth, staring at the woman with desperation, "Hey! That wasn't what we agreed upon. You said you'll let me see the boss! He's the only one I have left! I need to apologize to him!" He breathed heavily keeping his eyes on the woman for any sign of response.

The boy stared at the Yakuza, "Chisaki –."

Overhaul snarled at the boy, "Shut up you filthy bastard! I'm talking to the woman! She needs to –."

"Do you remember what you did to Eri?"

Overhaul's mind halted, the final piece that was missing in his puzzle was placed. The cogs began to motion once again tearing down the spider webs of all the events that transpired to his downfall, Eri… how could I forget about her… Overhaul's gold gaze shifted towards the green eyes of the boy, "Eri, yeah if only she was here…" She could rewind Pops, get him out of the coma…

"Seems like you've got someone you wish to apologize to." The boy remarked flatly. Overhaul stared at the boy as the words registered through him. He studied the blank green eyes that had spoken, "If only you could feel the same way towards Eri…"

Overhaul froze, realization crossing his face as the boy continued to stare at him emotionlessly.

"The promise you made with Lady Nagant, I'll keep it."

Overhaul huddled his back onto the holding cell wall, his mind reliving through memories and conversations. Eri, she was the solution – before he had just accepted to talk to the old man in his coma state… But Eri, she could bring him back, rewind him before he was in the coma.

He gritted his teeth putting his head on his knees taking deep breaths, I need Eri to bring him back – undo the damage… He grunted as memories of the scared and practically disobedient child came to his mind. Her screams, her tears, the sight of her blood splattering across the room until he reconstructed her again. The little bastard is lying. He will never hold up his end of the deal. He felt a wave of rage hit him, the thought of the boy giving him false hope in seeing Pops. He would never uphold it, there was no honor behind his words considering the circumstances.

I was so close… and it was for nothing! The chance slipped through his fingers, and his salvation of fixing Pops was practically dangled in his face. Before, he came to his conclusion that the only thing he could do was see Pops one last time and confess all the deeds he had done over his unconscious body – but now, there was a chance to get him back, to actually talk to him. Overhaul shut his eyes feeling rage and desperation eating at him, I need her. He will not let this chance to slip by him again – Not again.

Overhaul glared darkly at the cell, his body steaming with rage. His body felt numb and prickly from the sickening emotions that consumed him as he was faced with another defeat that brought him just short to what he wanted. He screamed in frustration, his body clenched in turmoil as a flash of Pops' sleeping face crossed his mind – the floor beneath him cracked and constructed…
