A/N: This idea was suggested by mashmaiden. References "Tin Soldiers" where Deeks asks Kensi if they'll ever be as happy as Callen and Sam. Takes place post "A Long Time Coming". Fluffy Densi all around.
Deeks slipped through the patio door, closing it behind him, and joining the small group spread out in the backyard. He and Deeks had invited the DC and Hawaii team members over for drinks and snacks before they had to head home, but only Torres and Lucy had taken them up on the offer.
Lucy and Rosa were over by the garden, and though Deeks couldn't quite hear what they were talking about, Rosa's laughter was audible.
"I still can't believe you two are a couple," Nick Torres commented, settling in a wicker chair, one leg crossed over the opposite knee. He nodded to Kensi, who was basically using Deeks as a pillow at this point, her legs tucked under her on their shared love seat.
"Yeah, we've heard that a lot," Deeks said, squinting as he pretended to ponder the issue. "No idea why."
I mean, you don't know us very well," Kensi pointed out.
"That's true. I didn't mean any offense, but you gotta admit that at face value, you're a lot different. Kensi, you're a world-class sniper from what I hear and speak multiple languages. And Deeks," he gestured in Deeks' direction, seeming to stall out.
"You were saying?" Deeks grinned as Torres flushed ever so slightly.
"You've just lived very different lives from what I've heard," he added hastily. "You don't seem to have a lot in common."
"Take it from an expert, you might want to stop talking now," Deeks suggested helpfully.
All you need to know, it that we're extremely happy together." Kensi said, pressing a kiss to Deeks' cheek.
"Huh, I just remember you once saying the very opposite."
"When did I say that?" Kensi gave him a skeptical look.
"During our first year as partners," Deeks supplied. "I asked if you thought we'd ever be as happy as Callen and Sam, and you said we would, but just not together."
"I was joking."
"So, you didn't like each other at first," Torres spoke up, reminding them that he was present.
"Our relationship was a little tenuous at first," Kensi hedged, waving her hand effusively. "Look, it just took a while to gain each other's trust and everything that comes with being partners because we actually are a lot more similar than people realize. For instance, we're both very dedicated to our work, we like to help people—"
"We're just a little bit competitive." Grinning down at Kensi, Deeks winked.
"That too," Kensi agreed with a roll of her eyes. "Eventually, we started getting along better, and then our chemistry just sort of exploded."
"Plus, she had a thing for my hair from the beginning," Deeks shared, dodging Kensi's playful elbow to his ribs.
"Uh-huh, who kissed who first?"
"Technically it was you if I recall correctly."
"Oh, c'mon. We've discussed this before. That was an undercover kiss, so it doesn't count."
"Ok, then what about all the times you smacked my butt looong before we ever got together?"
"You know, I take it back. You guys are perfect for each other," Torres cut in, sounding a little uncomfortable and just a touch annoyed.
Deeks grinned widely, ignoring the underlying sarcasm.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"A match made in heaven," Kensi agreed, cupping Deeks' cheeks.
A/N: I hope you'll forgive the absolute cheese-fest. And any major Torres fans, I hope you'll forgive me as well.
