Chapter 8 - Winds of Deception
Crusadermon soared through the air to rejoin Dynasmon on the other side of the tree that made up the center of Breezy Village. She could tell right away that the knight was seething with anger, "What have you done!?"
"Hedged out bets and stacked the odds in our favor. The village will turn on the girl," Crusadermon nodded quietly, looking back to see the villager's gathering around the human girl. Or rather, the digimon spirit whose power she now possessed. Crusadermon knew the plan was to lie low and simply keep both sides fighting against each other.
"We had to minimize our presence!" Dynasmon growled.
"They already saw me when I absorbed Cerberumon's power. What difference does it make if they see me here? No one else saw me so no one else will believe her," she reasoned.
Dynasmon looked back towards the village, his sigh revealing how frustrated he was becoming with her. He explained, "There's a war on. He won't notice us. He'll be too busy trying to protect the humans from the angry villagers, as well as trying to unite them. That does not mean we should act in a way that draws attention to ourselves. If he suspects anything is out of place, he will act. And if the Tamer acts, Lord Lucemon will have to intervene before he is ready."
"On and on with this plan of yours! Have you ever considered that this is what we're supposed to do? That Tamer hasn't accounted for us acting. The Digimon Tamer was always known for planning ahead. How can we be sure he has no contingencies for this? Or that we aren't already playing into his hands?" Crusadermon asked, trying to explain her concerns in a way that Dynasmon wouldn't immediately dismiss.
"How do you know you're not the one playing into what he wants? Tamer has his plans, and we have ours. And ours involves sowing as much chaos and discord as we can across the Digital World while maintaining a low profile. As long as we accomplish that, all else is irrelevant," Dynasmon answered. He certainly didn't dismiss her concerns, but his response wasn't exactly the answer she was hoping to get. If anything, she was more scared now than she had been before. Because what if Dynasmon was right? Either one of their actions could be playing exactly into the Digimon Tamer's hands.
He seemed to have sensed her unease because Dynasmon placed a hand on her shoulder, "You mustn't worry, Crusadermon. All will be well under our lord. Hail Lucemon."
"Hail Lucemon," Crusadermon said uneasily, annoyed that he was back to talking about faith in Lucemon. He may have had faith, but she wasn't so sure blind faith in Lucemon was any better than blind faith in their predetermined destiny. After all, that had been the central question in all of this. The question that started this long, bitter, seemingly endless conflict that had raged for eternity. She pushed these thoughts aside for now and followed Dynasmon on. There was still more for them to do.
"You killed the Elder!" a Floramon roared with an accusatory finger.
"So we'll kill you!" Mushroomon declared, joined by the other villagers closing in.
"That's not what happened! I swear!" she tried explaining, but they weren't listening to her. They were just after blood now. She stepped backwards from the advancing digimon until she had her back pressed against the tree in the center of the village and she realized she had nowhere to go.
"Psst. You can fly," the Guardian's voice said.
"I can what?" Kazemon looked around nervously, trying to figure how the Guardian Spirit could still be talking to her.
"You have wings."
Kazemon reached behind her back and felt something thin and papery that definitely wasn't there before. She looked over her shoulder and was amazed to see a pair of insect like wings growing from her back. The Guardian Spirit had not been kidding. She really did have wings. And if she had wings…that means she should be able to fly. But how?
"They're wings. You flap them."
"Yeah, right. Like I'm supposed to know how to move a bunch of muscles I've never had before," she mumbled back, realizing that there was nowhere left her to go from the advancing mob.
"That's a fair point. Okay. To work this muscle, you just have to…kinda scrunch your back up and down."
"What is that even supposed to mean?" she said, mimicking the Guardian Spirit's instructions. All it took was one to shoot her towards the sky. She screamed at the top of her lungs as she hurtled through the air, tumbling and spinning wildly until she felt her stomach turning inside out.
"You have to keep doing it to maintain control."
That would've been nice to know before she did it. But right now, all she could think about was the nausea in her gut and the headache from being unable to tell which was up. She tried to start moving her back again, stretching the space between her shoulder blades to regain control over her wings but it was impossible to do while she was hurtling through the air. In fact, what little control she had was lost when a flap of her wings sent her hurtling in a direction other than the one she wanted, "AAAHHH!"
"Look out!"
She adjusted her head to see Agunimon flying towards her, shooting fire from his fists to navigate the air towards her. He reached out one hand towards her, and she reached back to take his hand. Just as their fingers were about to meet, her wings twinged again and sent her shooting off in another direction, "AAAH!"
"Hang on!" he shouted, punching the air again to send himself flying towards her. However, he closed the gap so quickly that he ended up tackling her in the air and they crashed towards the game. He wrapped one arm around her while he used the other to punch down towards the ground.
"Hang on! This is going to be a rough landing!" he warned, using his fire to slow their descent so that they didn't crash straight into the ground. Every instinct in her body cried against looking towards the ground, which was impossible to do while they were hurtling towards it. But the sight of the Mushroomon and Floramon assembling down there to meet them was more terrifying than the impact itself.
"Wait! Agunimon! We have a problem!" she shouted, trying to warn him.
"One second!" Agunimon shouted, pulling her close and adjusting in the air so that his back slammed into the ground when they crashed. Every bit of her body ached and she felt every little rock slam against her body as they slid along the ground. Eventually, they came to a stop just at the edge of the village and Agunimon groaned.
She looked up to see him lying on the ground with one eye open and cracking a smile at her, "You okay?"
"I'm fine! Listen! We have to go! The Floramon and Mushroomon are going to come after us!" she said, fighting through the pain to bring herself to a stand. The world was spinning and it took all her concentration to not just fall over. Not helping was that Agunimon could barely sit up which meant she had to help him to his feet. And she realized just how heavy he was when he leaned on her for support.
"Don't worry about it. Just explain to them that we're here to help and they'll stop!" Agunimon grunted, barely able to talk and stand at the same time.
"They won't listen to me because they think I killed the elder of the village to get Kazemon's form and now they're trying to kill me to get revenge," she explained, trying to carry him towards the village wall. The sooner they got out of here, the better.
"Please tell me you didn't," Agunimon mumbled out in surprise.
"OF COURSE NOT!" she blurted out at him, offended by the fact he even asked.
"Well, that puts a damper on talking things out," Agunimon said quietly. They'd only gone a few steps before he was suddenly a lot lighter in her arms and a lot smaller. She glanced at him to see he'd turned back into Takuya and was practically slumped over beside her.
"Don't worry, we'll get you out of here!" she said, quietly trying not to admit that she wasn't sure how they were going to do that. The Mushroomon and Floramon were closing in from behind, stopping only when she heard a bone chilling roar from above. Snimon dove from the sky, drawing the attention of both the Mushroomon and Floramon who assembled in a defensive line to face the digimon.
"GIGGLE GRENADE!" the Mushroomon cried out in unison, chucking mushrooms into the air at Snimon. Snimon ascended out of the reach of the mushrooms as they exploded, releasing clouds of laughing spores into the air. The spores drifted back down towards the Mushroomon and Floramon who ran to avoid the back draft from their own attack. This was exactly what Kazemon needed to get away, and she hurried towards the barricade with Takuya in her arms.
"We need to stop Snimon," he said just as they reached the first defenses.
"Are you kidding me?" Kazemon shrieked, wanting to pull her hair out in frustration.
"He's going to kill these villagers if we don't stop him," Tamer reasoned.
"They're going to kill us if we do! Or did you forget the part where they think I killed the Elder and wouldn't let me explain?" Kazemon reminded him. She didn't expect Tamer to push himself out of her arms and stagger back towards the village. At least he tried to before he ended up stumbling and landing face first into the dirt.
"Stop it! We have to get out here! We didn't go through all this trouble to save you just so you could go get yourself killed!" Kazemon scolded the boy, helping him up so that he was at least laying face up. Or perhaps she was a lot stronger as a digimon because there was no way she wouldn't have trouble holding him up like this. Despite his stumble, he caught himself and stood back up.
"Kazemon, I didn't come this far to do nothing when people needed help, consequences be damned. They can hate me, beat me, capture me. I'll still help them when they need me," he said quietly. He raised up his digivice again, attempting to spirit evolve into his next form. But he was barely able to stand as he was and fell backwards into her arms.
"Sorry, I think I'm at my limit with all the running around I've been doing. I haven't really stopped since they threw me in that arena yesterday," he said quietly. She really had no idea what he was talking about. Running around? Arena? What exactly had he been doing while they were trying to rescue him?
She shook her head, trying to focus instead on what they were here to do, "We have to go."
"We can't," he insisted.
She'd had enough by that point, "Dammit Tamer! Why are you so determined to help them?"
He looked at her quizzically, one eyebrow raised slightly above the other, "For the same reason I was so willing to help you when I met you and the others at the train station. Because someone needed my help. That's all the reason I need, isn't it?"
"You can't just help everyone! Especially when they're trying to hurt you!" she shouted at him.
He just stared at her, "I'll still help them, even if they hate me for it."
She paused, surprised by his sentiment.
"He's right, y'know. This is the same reason I helped you," the Guardian spirit said, taking his side on this. Yes, he was. She should help. What was the point of having this power if she was just going to run away the second she had it? She turned back towards the retreating Mushroomon and Floramon. Snimon cut his way through their numbers, laughing as he went about cutting as many of them down as possible.
Part of her felt some satisfaction from watching them be cut down, especially after all the trouble they had caused. But any satisfaction to be had was lost when she saw the wounded crying out for help, only to be abandoned by their peers who fled. It wasn't right and she at least began to appreciate why Tamer was so adamant to help them. It wasn't for personal gain. It took only a moment for her to remember she needed to work her back to make the wings work, and she started trying to flex and stretch them. It took a second for her to get something like a rhythm going, but it was hard to concentrate when she could hear all the screams and fighting coming from just ahead of her.
"It's okay. Take your time. You can do this," the guardian spirit's voice echoed in her head. Time wasn't really something she could take though, as she heard more of the digimon screaming. But no amount of trying was going to make this work, forcing her to abandon flying. She would run in and help if flying wasn't an option for her.
"Stay here. I'll go help them. Don't do anything stupid!" she instructed Tamer. She placed one foot ahead of another, racing back towards the digimon who had been pursuing her just a moment before. She may not have been able to figure out how to fly but she could still at least try to fight. And if fighting wasn't an option, getting as many of the laughing Mushroomon and Floramon out of harm's way would be just as good. She hurried forward to save who she could, towards a Floramon who'd become trapped beneath debris from a collapsed building.
"Hang on! I'm coming!" she shouted, moving aside broken lumber and lifting up a piece of broken wall for the Floramon to get out. The Floramon crawled out, staring up in wide eyed surprise at the girl.
Kazemon gestured for the digimon to run but the flower just sat there, "What are you doing? Run! Get to safety!"
"Why'd you help me?" the flower raised an eyebrow.
"Are you kidding me, right now? I'm trying to save you! Now go!" Kazemon shouted, looking around to see if there was anyone else in need of help. There were two Mushroomon lopping their explosive mushrooms up at Snimon, and both were so oblivious to their surroundings that neither noticed the old inn behind them crumbling. She dashed forward, managing to push them both out of harm's way just as the wall came crashing down.
"Get off me!" one shouted while the other flailed to push her away.
"I just saved your lives!" she snapped at them.
"Nobody asked you to help us, murderer!" the Mushroomon barked back at her.
She clicked her tongue angrily and looked for more digimon that were in need but didn't see anyone she could immediately help. Though there were undoubtedly more since the village was in complete disarray. Most of the defenders were now fleeing for their lives while a few brave digimon took shots at Snimon whenever he was low to the ground. One lone Floramon tried to bind the bug in their vines but didn't have the necessary reach while some Mushroomon continued lobbing their mushrooms to catch it in the gas. Neither worked as Snimon either used his scythes to cut the vines and his wings to blow away the mushroom projectiles.
"Did you think that would work on me!? You'll never take me out of the skies!" Snimon roared, soaring through the air to dodge their attacks. Occasionally he would dive bomb down towards the unsuspecting digimon and cut some of the digimon down - turning them into clouds of data that burst apart.
"We need to ground him to restrict his movements!" one of the Floramon shouted.
"Yeah, but how? None of us can fly!" a Mushroomon pointed out. Kazemon looked back at her wings. She could. She should but she still hadn't quite figured out how to do it.
"It's okay. Flying is like walking. It takes time," the spirit assured her, although perhaps not as comfortingly as she intended.
"I don't have time! These digimon are all going to die at this rate!" Kazemon thought aloud. She needed to get up there and she needed to fight this digimon head on. But she couldn't do that if she was stuck down here.
"Then it's time for a crash course. Sometimes you have to learn to run before you learn to walk."
"That doesn't even make sense!" Kazemon countered.
"Don't worry about it. Here's what you need to do: raise up your arms and bring them down at the same time. Kind of like swimming," the voice told her. Kazemon was sure the Guardian spirit was messing with her. Swimming? She was trying to fly! How would doing the forward stroke help her fly? She mimed those exact actions, bringing her arms over her head and swinging them down at the same time. And as she did, she felt her wings swoop down with such speed that she was thrown towards the sky.
"AAH! WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE ME DO THIS EARLIER!?" she screamed aloud.
"Because I wanted to make sure you could stick the landing before you tried getting this high up. But experience is the teacher of all things, right? So good luck!" the Guardian Spirit told her.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?"
"Don't worry. It's like breathing. Once you get the hang of it, it'll happen without having to think about it," the voice said again. That was hardly a comfort as she looked down to see the ground fast approaching towards her. No, she had to look up. She had to stay in the air, trying to forget the feeling of falling and instead focus on staying in the air. She straightened herself so that she was vertical and repeated her action from earlier. Once again, she was propelled skyward, launching her further into the sky so that she could see for miles all around her. She could see the mountains in the far off distance, the factory where they had just liberated the Kokuwamon, the smoke from the camp where the other digimon had been taking refuge, and the ravine Tamer had fallen into.
She was flying. Or at the very least, she was in the air. And the sensation made her feel light and excited. Without realizing, she had cracked a smile and angled herself towards Snimon. She mimed the motion again, hurtling herself towards the digimon at full speed. She spread her arms out to grab Snimon as she got closer, only to watch the giant bug move out of her path.
The digimon jeered, "What the hell? Another one? Fine! I'll eat you too!"
Kazemon adjusted herself so that she was angled back at him, "Then eat this!"
She stroked forward again, shooting herself straight at him. The digimon paused in the air, his mouth hanging open, "What kind of flying is that?"
Okay, it wasn't quite flying that she'd gotten the hang of but at least she was in the air now. She slammed straight into Snimon, knocking them both into a downward spiral straight for the ground. Perhaps it was instinct that kicked in afterwards, or maybe a long forgotten reflex of muscle memory from the guardian spirit's past. Whichever it was, she spun in the air and gave Snimon two swift kicks to the head, "Roseo Temporale!"
Snimon plummeted down towards the ground, crashing straight into the center of the village.
"Quickly! Get him!" the villagers shouted as they swarmed Snimon. The Floramon wrapped out their vines to restrain the giant bug while the Mushroomon pelted it with their mushroom projectiles. Kazemon wanted to keep watching but she had a new problem ahead of her.
Landing.
And she needed to figure it out quickly before her face was introduced to the ground at speeds well in excess of fast. She adjusted herself until she was angled perpendicular to the ground and. She repeated the motion again to propel herself forward. It had been a while since she'd taken a physics lesson but she hoped she was remembering it right.
In theory, this angle would slow her descent and create enough momentum for her to tuck into a roll when the ground was closer. If not, then she was in for a very rough landing. Thankfully, she was right and was able to tuck into a smooth roll along the ground. Although smooth wasn't the right choice of words with how rough of a landing she was in for. She rolled to a stop on her back, staring straight up at the sky and the sun overhead. It would've been a nice day if it hadn't been for everything they'd been going through today.
"Zoe! Is that you?" Beetlemon's voice said. She looked to the side and saw Beetlemon kneeling beside her, giggling slightly. She answered with a simple nod and he offered her a hand to help her up.
The world was spinning and her legs felt like jelly. Which was nothing to say for her back or her wings which was a whole new sensation of sore and tired that she didn't know she could feel. Beetlemon helped her to stand by throwing one of her arms over his shoulder, "I have to admit, you looked really cool flying around like that. It's like you already knew how to fly!"
She had no idea if he was being sarcastic or not and kept her mouth shut. She didn't want to admit that she really had no idea what she was doing. She thanked him and tried to steady herself against him, "I'm glad to see you're doing safe after getting hit with those laughing mushroom spores."
"I'm glad to see you're okay after that fight with the giant bug. What happened to it anyway?" Beetlemon asked.
"I don't know. He crashed into the village and the digimon were tying him up when I last saw," she answered.
"Then we'd better go make sure the villagers are alright after all that. I didn't exactly mean to bring Snimon out here. And maybe they'll let Tamer go since you helped them," Beetlemon reasoned.
"No!" Kazemon said quickly. Beetlemon stopped in his tracks, tilting his head to the side in surprise. She braced herself for his response as she explained what happened and noticed his expression going between confusion and annoyance.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me! You mean he's been free this whole time? And he didn't just leave? Or, y'know, come look for us? We could've been done with this hours ago!" Beetlemon groaned. Kazemon wasn't sure why that was the part Beetlemon latched onto and not the part about the village being mad at her for something she didn't do
"He was trying to help! Just like what we did back at the factory! It was the right thing to do," Kazemon explained, suddenly unsure if it actually was. After all, a lot of digimon perished today and she wasn't sure if it could've been entirely avoided if they had done nothing at all.
"Poison Ivy!" Several voices cried out in unison, as several hundred vines whipped out from around various buildings to ensnare them in bindings. Kazemon and Beetlemon both fell to the ground, bound together by the same vines so that they had their backs pressed against each other. Kazemon tried adjusting her view to see several Mushroomon and Floramon racing towards them. Her mind raced as she tried to think of a way out of this but realized they probably weren't in the mood to listen to her. Even if she had gone out of her way to help some of them. But how else was she supposed to explain that she hadn't killed the Elder? Or perhaps keeping her mouth shut and saying nothing at all would've been a better use of her time? No, who was she kidding? They definitely were going to kill her!
"We told you to leave our village! Instead you brought that Snimon back here, killed the Elder, and stole the Guardian Spirit!" one of the Mushroomon accused her.
"That's not what happened! The Elder gave me the Guardian Spirit!" Kazemon tried to explain to them only to be shouted down by another digimon.
"Then why is the Elder dead!?"
"The Elder died and you were the only one there!"
She couldn't argue against that, especially since that pink armored digimon took off before she could do anything to stop it. But that didn't stop Beetlemon from trying to make their case, "She saved your village by knocking that giant bug out of the sky! Doesn't that count for something?"
"The village wouldn't have needed saving if you hadn't brought that Snimon!" another Mushroomon roared back at him.
"She came to save you even after you accused her of killing your village's elder. I'd say that counts for a whole lot to be honest," Tamer's voice said from behind her. Kazemon couldn't turn her head enough to see him, but his voice was unmistakable. She should've known that he wouldn't stay put. He couldn't if his life depended on it, although it probably already did in this situation.
"And then there's this guy!" the same Mushroomon shouted, summoning a chorus of frustrated grumbles from the other digimon present, "If you had just answered the Elder's question, we wouldn't have been in this mess."
"I did answer the question. Honestly, if I may add. Yes, I am The Digimon Tamer. And if you're ready to start listening to me, I think you guys are really jumping to conclusions here. Kazemon wouldn't have killed your Elder, would she? She couldn't even bring herself to kill any of you and you were all trying to kill her," Tamer began in a matter of fact tone.
"Oh yeah!? Well, if she's so innocent, then why did she run?" one of the Floramon accused.
"Probably because you were shouting about how you were going to kill her," Tamer remarked.
"Yeah, because she killed the Elder!" a Mushroomon reasoned.
"There it is again. You immediately jump to killing her," Tamer wagged a finger disappointedly at the digimon before flicking it across the nose, "How about you guys give her a chance to explain before you decide whether she's guilty or not? This place used to be known for its hospitality and welcoming atmosphere. Why not use some of that, again?"
Kazemon shifted her gaze around across the various Floramon and Mushroomon present, seeing many of them looking to one another for some kind of cue about what to do. Kazemon shifted uncomfortably and looked up at Tamer, "Psst! What are you doing?"
"Appealing to their better nature," Tamer whispered back. Kazemon wasn't sure how he thought that was going to help since that was the exact thing she and Beetlemon had tried to do just a moment ago.
After a long moment of silence among the group, one of the Floramon spoke up, "She pulled me out of the rubble. I'm willing to at least hear her out."
Kazemon tried to tilt her head to see the Floramon who spoke but she was once again just out of view. But she remembered saving this Floramon moments earlier. A few of the others in the group murmured in quiet agreement, weighing whether or not they should hear her out before Tamer finally whispered, "I think that means yes. Go ahead."
Kazemon needed a second to think about where to start. So much happened so quickly that she wasn't sure where the right place to start. She frowned, "Look, I didn't kill the Elder. Yes, I was going to get the Guardian Spirit, but I wasn't trying to steal it! I heard a voice calling me and I followed it to that tree in the center of your village. When I got there, your Elder was sitting there waiting for me. She gave me the Guardian Spirit and asked me to use it to protect your village. I'm sorry about your elder, but I wasn't the one who killed her. I don't know what happened, if I'm being honest. When I used the Guardian Spirit to become Kazemon, I was blinded by light. And when the light passed, your Elder was on the ground dying and there was this digimon in pink armor flying away. That was when you guys showed up."
"So you're saying you didn't kill the Elder, it was the flying pink digimon," one Mushroomon repeated.
"That's right," Kazemon swore.
"That nobody else saw," a Floramon pointed out. Kazemon didn't like where that was going.
"And who conveniently left before any of us got there," another one pointed out. When they put it like that, yeah, things did look pretty damning against her.
"This whole story sounds like a load of bull and I think you're lying to us," a Mushroomon said. Kazemon should've known better than to get her hopes up. They'd already made up their minds before she even had the chance to explain herself. And she expected Tamer to at least understand that. But he just stood there smiling calmly, or perhaps stupidly.
"Have some faith in your friend. He seems to know what he's doing," the Guardian Spirit said.
"Yeah, he's going to get us killed," Kazemon said quietly to herself.
"I believe them," one lone Floramon covered in a thing layer of soot spoke up. She didn't know why this digimon believed her - she hated saying it but a lot of these digimon looked the same to her.
"She saved me when I was trapped under some collapsed building. If she really was just after the power of the Guardian Spirit, she would've grabbed it and left. She even could've turned it against us. But she didn't. She stayed and helped stop the Snimon," the Floramon said.
"After she ran away," a Mushroomon shouted.
"She saved you from that collapsing building too, didn't she?" the Floramon reasoned.
"That doesn't make up for the fact that she killed the Elder!" another Floramon cried out, leading to several cries of agreement from the other villagers.
"Did anyone actually see her kill the Elder?" the Floramon asked. The group fell silent. It was a surprise and one Kazemon hadn't expected to happen. Maybe pointing out that they'd jumped to the wrong conclusion was what they needed to hear? Kazemon hoped that this was would be enough to get them to change their mind.
"TRAITOR!"
"YOU PROBABLY TOLD THEM WHERE TO FIND IT!"
The Floramon's expression turned to fright as the village quickly exploded in anger. Several of the Floramon used their vines to bind the Floramon down. Kazemon didn't know what she'd expected, but it definitely wasn't to see an entire village of digimon turn so angrily against one of their own. Especially when the digimon had just been trying to help. Even Tamer's expression turned into a frown as it finally sank in how serious their situation was.
"Well, so much for peaceful," Tamer mumbled, producing his digivice and shouting, "Execute! SPIRIT EVOLUTION! AGUNIMON!"
He transformed in a blaze of fire into Agunimon, and went about using to burn away the vines holding down the Floramon, Kazemon, and Beetlemon. The surrounding villagers retreated away from the flames, giving Agunimon a chance to pick up the Floramon and shout, "RUN!"
Kazemon didn't need telling twice, scrambling to her feet and launching herself into the air to put distance between herself and the village. Below, she could see Beetlemon and Agunimon running away from the rest of the village.
Kazemon hated everything about their current situation, and it gave her time to reflect on what JP had been saying before about not getting involved in any of this mess. Because right now, all she really wanted was to go home and get away from all of this. She soared through the air until she came tumbling to a stop just outside the village's defenses, where Agunimon and Beetlemon were racing to catch up.
"Keep going!" Agunimon shouted.
"They're right behind us!" Beetlemon said.
"Put me down! My legs work just fine!" the Floramon protested from under Agunimon's arm, but he was too busy running to notice anything she was saying. Kazemon looked back to see the villagers still giving chase and frowned. She had no idea what was going on, anymore. All she knew was that they were definitely not welcome in Breezy Village anymore. So the group ran as fast and as far as they could back towards the camp and factory they'd just liberated.

"See? I told you both that all you had to do was relax," Tamer replied. She had no idea what he was talking about, until she looked down and saw she was no longer dressed in what barely passed for armor. She was Zoe again and was relieved to know that she was back to her normal height, "Finally! Back to normal clothes. What was up with that armor, anyway? What was it supposed to protect!?"
"Ask the Guardian Spirit. They're the ones who chose the outfit," Tamer replied quietly.
"I most certainly did not! That armor was given to me by the Digital Agents and I bet you that The Digimon Tamer was the one who helped design it!"
