The Rising: A Zombie Crossover
Prelude
The dim candle light barely illuminated the man as he crouched over a table, writing in his journal.
They're not zombies. Or at least, not like traditional zombies. I remember all of the Night of the Living Dead, all that crap. These are different. It's a infection, this time. The dead aren't rising, instead it seems to incubate in hosts, then changes them.
Once the change takes hold, they become violent. They bite and tear like animals, attacking anyone nearby. They also seem incredibly infectious. A bite, saliva... even spit getting into your eye can trigger it. And some idiots hide their being infected, making it worse.
The GOOD news is that head shots work. And if you do enough damage they stop or bleed out. But the blood is toxic, and if you're near a badly wounded one you can turn too. It's as if the nearness of the virus or whatever the hell it is causes you to turn.
Don't know when it started either. The news media and the governments were in denial for awhile, not acknowledging what happened. Or if you believe the conspiracy nuts, the CDC ordered the press to sit on the story. Either way, infected took planes, trains and automobiles all over the place, spreading infected. And there was the theory it was at least partially airborne.
The writer stopped as he heard a sound outside. He put his pen down and walked towards the window. He peered out into the dark, looking for movement.
With a loud crash the window exploded inward, glass showering him. "No!" he yelped as a bloody hand grabbed him by the chest. It yanked him forward as the man fought wildly, trying to break free from it's grip.
"Gwarh," the critter incoherently growled.
Still screaming the man was dragged out into the night as the things descended on him and hungrily fed...
To be continued...
Notes: This will be a multi-crossover fic, tho the basic 'universe' will be that of Mira Grant's Newsflesh. I intend to use bits from other series as I see fit, occasionally editing bits to fit.
Digression: I'm a big fan of Zombie apocalypse style stories, but the internal logic of a lot of them make little or no sense. That's sorta excusable in the 'magic zombie' stories where no explanation for them is given, but even SF style stories get stuff wrong. (I don't care how tough your zombie is: if it's lungs get blown out, no oxygen means it DIES. Underwater the same.)
BASICALLY this will be a SF style series, and will follow SF style rules. But I will occasionally fudge bits if I feel it's needed. As well, I'll be mixing in some anime series that I think work. Anyway, looking forward to reviews.
