Chapter 21: A Familiar Voice
"You were going to leave me there?" Zoe croaked, throat still sore from all the salt water she'd been coughing up.
"No, don't be ridiculous. It's in my best interest to keep you all alive. Believe me, I would've known if you were in any kind of danger," Agunimon replied.
"Right, and supposed this was supposed to kill her. Would you have told us then?" JP asked, leaning in on Agunimon to make sure he didn't lie or change his story to save face. Agunimon ignored him though and kept his attention on steering the raft along. Zoe hated that he wasn't answering the question but didn't have the strength to argue after her near death experience.
"He's pleasant," Zephyrmon's voice echoed inside her head.
"He's The Digimon Tamer and he's exactly as annoying as we remember," Kazemon added quietly.
"You're kidding!" Zephyrmon gasped in surprise.
"I wish. And his new face isn't exactly pleasant to look at," Kazemon replied.
Zoe was glad to hear their voices but wished they would pick literally any other time to talk. Her head was still pounding and she really wanted to just close her eyes. She shivered from the cold, prompting Koji to throw his jacket around her.
"Here," he said quietly, keeping his attention away from her. Zoe was barely able to look Koji in the eye after what he did. Zephyrmon spent a lot of time narrating how many times his lips touched hers just a moment ago. Even if it was to save her life, the whole thing was just flustering to Zoe. That was not how she figured her first kiss would go. Did that count as a first kiss? She didn't think it did. But then she remembered that their lips touched, which definitely made it count as a kiss.
"Thanks," she finally stammered out when she realized that both JP and Tomoki were staring at her quietly.
Agunimon stayed awake the whole time, sailing without stopping for two days until they finally made it towards the mainland. The whole time, Zoe noted that he didn't stop to sleep or eat. As soon as they disembarked, Tomoki offered him some dried mango and asked, "Aren't you hungry?"
"I should probably eat something, yeah," he said, quietly taking the mango and detransforming back into Tamer. As he ate the mango, he asked the Gomamon, "So…what are you guys going to do now?"
"Probably hang out here for a while and make a new home. It won't be as quiet now that we are on the mainland and we've got a lot of catching up to do. Being stuck on an island for so long means we don't actually know what's been going on outside of it," the Gomamon answered happily. "Plus, I've got some friends I haven't seen in a while. It'll be nice to meet up with them again. What about you guys?"
"We still have to find the rest of the Guardian Spirits and put a stop to this war," Koji said, eyeing Tamer wearily as he said that. "That is the plan, right?"
"Yup. We should probably get going," Tamer remarked.
"Aren't you even slightly tired after being up for two days?" JP groaned, hopping off the raft to steady his legs after sailing on a rocking raft for so many days.
"Nah. I don't really care for staring at the back of my eyelids. It's kinda boring," he said nonchalantly.
"You're the Tamer aren't you?" Gomamon asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyes on the boy and pointing a finger accusingly.
Tamer's shoulders slumped and he heaved a heavy sigh, "I really wish people would stop recognizing me. Yes, it's me. Hello, Gomamon. Look, I know you don't like me and I'd like to avoid an awkward conversation. So how about we both just go our separate ways so that we never have to see each other ever again?"
Gomamon kept a narrowed eye on him. Zoe recalled her conversation with the little digimon yesterday, and couldn't guess at what kind of history there was between them. More worrisome, was Gomamon planning on picking a fight with Tamer. She readied herself to jump between them but was relieved to see that Gomamon simply sighed and shook his head, "I…fine. But whatever you're doing, you better treat these kids well. They're only caught up in whatever you're doing because you dragged them along. And if I had to bet, they really don't want to get more involved than they need to! So you keep them safe and you keep them alive!"
"Wow, it's like he read my mind," JP remarked.
"I think that's just how everyone feels around him," Koji said quietly.
"You really are popular, aren't you?" Zoe asked.
"You say that like I'd let them get into trouble," Tamer replied.
"You did," Gomamon said, and Tamer fell silent. After several moments of silence, Gomamon turned around and waddling away with the other Gomamon following along.
Only one lagged behind the others, stopping to quietly say, "Thanks for getting us off the island."
It was a small, quiet praise. But Zoe couldn't tell if Tamer actually acknowledged it or not. What she could see was the Gomamon only meant it out of obligation because it quickly hurried after the others. The Gomamon led the others away while declaring, "Come on guys! Let's go find a nice place to set up our new home."
"We should get going too, if we want to rescue Bokomon and Neemon. We also need to find the last beast spirit," Tamer said quickly, his attitude perking up excitedly.
"You mean mine?" Tomoki said a little excitedly, the first to quickly follow after him. Zoe followed along behind them, looking back to see JP and Koji trailing just a little bit behind.
"You're the only one who doesn't have one yet, so yes," Tamer said matter of factly.
"And let me guess, we're just going to stumble on it the way we've stumbled onto all the others. Aren't we?" JP asked sarcastically from the back. However, it seemed that Tamer didn't quite register the sarcasm from where he was.
"That is how it's looking, yes. But are you really going to complain about it being too easy?" Tamer replied.
"A little, since the fights we get into are never that easy and it'd be nice to get an easy win for once," JP grumbled quietly.
"Does that fight with Ranamon not count?" Tamer asked nonchalantly.
Koji grunted and mumbled something under his breath, although Zoe could hazard a guess that it was directed at JP by the way the boys were now leering at each other.
"Knock it off, guys. There's no point in fighting with each other," Zoe reminded them, although she could still hear them quietly grumbling at each other. She sighed and looked back towards Tamer, "So where are we going, anyway? I mean, we can't just be wandering off in a random direction."
"Well, we're on the coast now which means we're back on the main continent of Server," Tamer explained happily.
"Server," Zoe repeated in disbelief, unsure if she was amazed at how stupid the name or unsurprised by it.
"Like the computer internet thing?" Tommy asked.
"That's so weird," JP added quietly from the back. She really shouldn't have been surprised by now, but sometimes the conventions of the Digital World would remind her of just how weird this world was.
"Yes, it's a large continent but going by the fact that we sailed from Gomamon Island, I'd say that we want to go this way if we want to get back to Cherubimon's camp. Assuming that they're still there," Tamer added quietly, sounding more ominous than perhaps he'd intended.
"How do you know all this anyway?" Zoe asked curiously.
Tamer tapped the side of his head and smiled, "Map of the Digital World memorized in my head. Had to learn the whole thing when I was a student…not to go all back in my day on you guys. My sense of direction used to be awful though. Took me the longest time to figure out which way was north. I had a friend back then who was never afraid to tell me when I was going the wrong way."
"And where's this friend, now?" Koji asked skeptically, hands in his pocket.
"In my head," he replied, tapping the side of his head again with a cheerful smile. Zoe didn't like that answer and was annoyed at learning about another voice was inside his head. How many other things had he left out.
"Enough about me, though. My life story is kinda boring. Zoe, you went to Italy! What was that like?" Tamer asked them quietly. Zoe didn't like the sudden change in Tamer's attention and her eyes narrowed on him wearily.
"Why the sudden interest?" she asked.
"Because I get the feeling that if I talk about myself anymore, JP is going to deck me," Tamer replied happily, seemingly ignoring JP remarking that he would if given half the chance. Zoe could appreciate why he felt that way, knowing full well that Tamer had been willing to leave her for dead not that long ago. Part of her thought about hitting Tamer just for that just as he added, "Besides, I'm sure JP will forget all about me once he hears you talking. He does like you after all."
JP sputtered out some noise in embarrassment as he tried and failed to form a cohesive response. Zoe's face flushed as she was reminded of JP's interest. That's not to say she hated him, more that she just wasn't interested and this whole conversation was weird to her. She shook her head, trying to get her mind off the subject.
"How about you, Koji? You're pretty good in a fight! Where'd you learn?" Tamer pointed out happily, earning an annoyed grunt from Koji. "Actually, let's not talk about that or it might give JP ideas."
"Oh believe me, I've got ideas," JP finally found his voice and grumbled at Tamer.
"Hey! Is that a village?" Tomoki shouted, thankfully getting the subject off anything Tamer was saying before another fight broke out. Zoe squinted her eyes to get a better look and could vaguely see some distant buildings, a distant pier, and some boats floating just in the distance. Massive ships - the kind used to transport goods long distances.
"Yeah, that's new. Who wants to go take a look?" Tamer said excitedly, rushing ahead without looking.
"Wait, is this a good idea? What if they attack us!?" Zoe called out after him, only to find herself ignored. "I don't like the fact that he just runs in."
"I bet he does it to drag us along with his plans," JP frowned, scratching the back of his head. "Come on. Let's go see what crazy thing we're getting dragged into this time."
…
Bokomon and Neemon hurried along quietly behind Gotsumon, traveling farther and faster than they'd ever had before. Especially in the middle of the war. It had been days since they escaped the campe, and Bokomon wasn't sure where they were going. But he did have two concerns - the first was reuniting with the others, the second was hitting Tamer several times across the face with the broad side of his tome. But the question was how to do that - they had no idea where the others had gone. And Tamer's digiport was anything but reliable.
They could've been anywhere. And the book Bokomon's was holding was starting to weigh down on him.
"How much further are we going to go?" Neemon whined from the back, panting with every step he took.
"You wouldn't be so tired if you would stop stuffing your pockets with food," Bokomon pointed out, barely able to contain his own panting and shortness of breath.
"I'm the only one who carries food! All you carry is that stupid book!" Neemon rebuked him quickly. Bokomon was about to make a counter point with his book but was too tired to properly lift it over his head. Hell, he could barely keep it in his arms with how tired he was.
"Quit fighting you two. We still have a lot of ground to cover if we're going to escape Cherubimon's army. Her scouts can be anywhere and some of them fly! If we don't want to get caught, we need to get moving!" Gotsumon said.
"And where exactly are we going? How far will be enough distance between us and them?" Neemon asked the question that was on Bokomon's mind.
Gotsumon stopped, perhaps the first time they'd stopped since they fled the camp, and they finally had a moment to catch their breath. The little rock digimon sighed, "I don't know what you think qualifies as enough distance, but my guess is to get as far away from either side of this fight as possible. And there's only a few places those armies won't go."
"And where's that?" Bokomon asked.
"Primary Village, where all baby digimon go!" Gotsumon said. "Because neither side wants to be seen as recruiting kids, and no side wants to be known as the one that attacks babies."
"So then…which way to Primary Village?" Bokomon asked, taking in their surroundings for the first time since they'd fled. It was a forest, although that was hardly a distinguishing feature for their surroundings.
Gotsumon looked up for a moment, then took out a compass from his backpack, "We've been running west for two days so…probably south of here? Let's get out of this forest and try to get our bearings. If I can see some stars or landmarks, that'll definitely help."
Bokomon didn't like the idea of doing more running and hiding, especially since that was all they ever seemed to do. Still, he had no other plans at the moment besides this and couldn't think of anything else to do.
The fishing village was larger and more lively than any of them could've guessed. It was just like Gomamon Island if they'd taken the time to build some more permanent structures. Vendors were busy selling their wares to the many digimon passing by, while others busily loaded whatever hauls came in by boat onto crates to be transported out. It was a stark contrast to any of the other places they'd been to so far - completely untouched by the ravages of war.
"Who knew a place like this existed? It's kinda…normal," JP mused as they made their way up the streets.
"I guess the war hasn't gotten here yet," Koji said, stopping at one of the vendors where someone was busy grilling beef skewers. They must've wandered into the cooking district, eyeing the many cooked dishes that they couldn't pay for. At least, not with any currency they had.
"I'm so hungry," Tomoki whimpered as he sniffed the air. Zoe was just as anxious, sniffing the air to get just the tiniest whiff of all the delicious food being prepared around them - yakisoba, fried squid, fried fish, baked fruit, and freshly sliced melons. Just thinking about it made her stomach grumble with hunger. If only Bokomon were here, he might've been able to pay for some of this delicious food in front of them.
Then they heard the noise of a nearby digimon calling out into the crowd, "Step right up! Step right up! Come get your pick of rarities from the human world!"
"Human world?" Zoe turned her head in the direction of the calling digimon, but could scarcely see through the crowd of digimon. "You think there's a digimon here actually selling stuff from our world?"
"If there is, maybe they've got a way back to our world!" JP said excitedly.
"Is that a good thing, though? How could a digimon get to our world and what's it doing with a bunch of stuff from our world?" Koji asked quietly.
"Th…that's a good point. Tamer, you got an explanation for this?" JP turned to Tamer. He seemed trapped in a stupor, staring off in the direction of the voice. "Tamer? Hey! Tamer! Uh, don't tell me the D-Reaper's at the wheel again."
"I know that voice," Tamer finally said, snapping out of his stupor. "But it can't be…"
"Can't be who?" JP asked him, only to be ignored as Tamer dashed off through the crowd.
"Tamer! Dammit Tamer!" JP called after him. "Why does he keep doing that!?"
"Come on," Zoe said, going after Tamer as he ran through the crowd until they came across a shop run by a small robot digimon. On display were various items from their world - assorted tools, books, cameras, school supplies, kitchenware, and what appeared to be a few rusted wheels. On careful examination, it was clear that everything on display came from a junkyard. And standing in front of it in a stupor was Tamer staring impatiently at the robot.
"Step right up, sir! We have all kinds of trinkets and treasures from your world! Come look at this! They call it a dinglehopper and humans use it to brush their hair!"
The robot digimon in question was holding what was clearly a fork. But that didn't appear to have Tamer's attention in all. On the contrary, his attention was strictly on the robot digimon making a sales pitch. Now it was trying to sell a smoke pipe that it called a 'snarfblatt' and insisted it was used as a musical instrument for entertainment. The longer the robot digimon spoke, the more Tamer's fists began to shake.
"Tamer, do you know this guy?" Zoe asked nervously, positioning herself between the two of them in case he did something very stupid.
"I know his voice," Tamer said quietly, his voice shaking with an anger she hadn't heard before. "I followed it because it really sounded like him. Instead, I find a junk salesman!"
"Is something wrong, sir? You seem upset! Here! How about I interest you in something to help you feel better! Behold a whatchamacallit! Humans use this to cheer themselves up when they feel sad," the Datamon said, holding up what was clearly an empty bottle of whiskey. At least Datamon was half right about this one.
"Hey! I've seen that! My mom and dad drink that whenever they're having a party but they never let me have any!" Tomoki said enviously.
JP snorted, "I thinks that's for the better. Forget about that, what's your deal Tamer?"
"My deal? I have no deal! I'm just very annoyed," Tamer said quietly, turning away from the digimon. "This self professed expert on the human world is a Datamon. A hyper intelligent robot digimon. One alone can think as fast as a super computer. Although it seems intelligence doesn't include knowledge in that regard."
"If he's so smart, why did he call a fork a dinglehopper?" Koji narrowed his eyes wearily, examining the fork closely and turning it over in his hand. "Man, this thing is ancient. It looks like it came out of my grandmother's house."
"Hey! Hands off the merchandise! This is procured only from the finest of human treasure hoards!" Datamon said proudly. "You wanna touch? You gotta buy!"
"This stuff looks like it came from a junkyard," Tomoki added his own thoughts, earning him a barking retort from the angry Datamon.
"Yeah? And what would you know, human? I've learned all of this from the finest tome of human knowledge, although it is incomplete," Datamon said proudly. He raised up in his arms an old video tape case with the words 'The Little Mermaid'. Zoe snorted as she tried to hold in her laughter, but JP wasn't as successful and burst out into laughter.
"Th-that's a kids movie!" JP roared. "Datamon here got all his data on humans from a movie for kids!"
"Hmph! It seems you humans have no appreciation for your own culture!" Datamon said indignantly. "If you're not buying, then you're leaving! I have other wares to sell to other interested customers!"
"What other customers?" Koji asked, setting the fork down and looking around to see they were the only ones paying the Datamon any mind.
"Okay, scram!" Datamon fumed at them.
"Your friends sure do seem awfully rude. Are you okay being around people like that?" a voice echoed in Tomoki's head, pulling his attention towards an old wooden camera sitting on the display. Tomoki's heart jumped as he realized it must've been a Guardian Spirit reaching out to him. He picked up the camera and turned it in his hand, wondering how to get the spirit out.
"You could always smash it against the ground. I've been stuck in here for a long time," the spirit echoed inside his mind. No way. The last thing he needed was Datamon getting angrier at him than he already was. Thankfully, he hadn't noticed since he was too busy arguing with the others to notice that Tommy was handling the camera. Although Tomoki had to wonder what horrible thing led to the Guardian getting stuck inside a camera from the human world. Actually, how did any of the Guardian Spirits get stuck where they were?
"Cracks in reality that happened during our battle against Lucemon. We were dropping the entire Digital World on us. So he dropped us into reality. Long story to be honest," the Guardian Spirit's voice answered for him. Which wasn't really much of answer if Tomoki was being honest because he had no idea what any of that was supposed to mean.
"Hey Tamer! What does it mean to drop someone into reality?" Tomoki asked aloud without thinking.
"You know how the Digiport randomly drops us somewhere? It's kinda like that but instead of being localized to the Digital World, you can end up anywhere. The difference is that the Digiport tries to set a destination but dropping someone into reality doesn't. Why?" Tamer answered quickly, proving just as nonsensical as the talk voice inside of the camera. Annoyed at all the big words being thrown his way, Tomoki just raised the camera up for them to see.
"Hands off the merchandise!" Datamon snapped as he snatched the camera away, cradling it in his arms as though it were his baby. "You touch! You buy!"
"Hey we need that!" Tomoki whined.
"And I need to make money! So how about we trade? I'll give it for…five hundred!" Datamon said sternly.
"I really hate the things you say with his voice," Tamer said through grit teeth and clenched fists.
"And I hate the fact that you humans all showed up and started touching my stuff! So how about you do yourselves a favor and leave if you're not going to buy it!" Datamon snapped back.
"Fine!" Tamer said, turning to leave.
Tomoki panicked and grabbed a hold of Tamer's gloved hand to keep him from going too far. The older boy was caught by surprise and he raised an eyebrow at Tomoki inquisitively, "What's the big deal?"
"We need that camera! The Guardian Spirit is in it!" Tomoki said in a hushed tone. He could see the wince in Tamer's eyes and the annoyance grow as the boy mouthed 'are you kidding'. Tamer let out a heavy sigh and marched back towards Datamon.
"What else do you want for the camera?" Tamer asked bitterly.
"You mean the soul stealer? One-thousand! And my price doubles if you ask again," Datamon answered quickly, smiling at how Tamer's face soured in response. Tomoki blinked and looked at Zoe in confusion, wondering why he called it a 'soul stealer'. Perhaps that was how the Guardian Spirit ended up trapped inside.
"Is there anything else you want? We don't have cash but we're willing to trade for it," Tamer said through what was clearly a very restrained growl.
"I only take cash. And the price is now two-thousand. Ask me again," Datamon said angrily.
"You know, for a guy who talks so much about needing to make sales, it sure is weird that you keep making it hard for us to get that," JP remarked quietly.
"You ever hear of supply and demand? Well I've got the supply and you've got the demand! I've named my price!" Datamon said smugly.
"You know you're supposed to name a price we're willing to pay right?" Koji asked.
"Well, I can see from all the way over here that you humans are prepared to pay any price to get this camera. So! who's gonna pony up the dough for it?" Datamon said smugly.
"I really don't like you," Tamer said to the Datamon.
"And now the price is four-thousand," Datamon said smugly. Tomoki looked at the others nervously and was relieved to see Koji and Zoe finally pulling Tamer back before the price went any higher. It was a good thing too because Tamer looked ready to leap onto Datamon and start throwing punches. Tomoki followed as they led Tamer away, looking back to see JP trying to schmooze things over with the robot.
Once they were a good distance away, Koji spun Tamer around and gave him a hard shove "What's your deal?"
"Imagine hearing your best friend's voice coming out of someone you don't like! You'd get mad too, wouldn't you?" Tamer spat out angrily, snapping so harshly that Koji flinched in surprise.
"Where did that come from?" Zoe blinked, stepping back when she found herself as the center of Tamer's glare.
"It's nothing," Tamer said quietly, folding his arms and glaring daggers back towards Datamon, further adding to Tomoki's confusion. Tomoki looked back at the camera the Datamon was holding carefully while JP continued to talk to him. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped."
"Wow," was all Koji managed to say. Tomoki still didn't entirely get it but he at least had an idea why Tamer was so upset. Just the idea of imagining one of his bullies talking with Zoe's voice was upsetting, although in a way that was more alarming than angering. "I didn't think you had friends."
Tomoki winced as he anticipated whatever scathing response Tamer had for Koji. Even Zoe seemed taken aback by what Koji had said. However, the boy simply let his arms fall to his side and he turned away.
"That was mean," Tomoki said to Koji, breaking the silence that had formed between them.
"Was it wrong, though? Most of the digimon we've met really don't have anything nice to say about Tamer!" Koji replied.
"That wasn't the point, Koji," Zoe pointed out to him. "That was uncalled for!"
"Guys!" JP called out to them, walking towards them casually with a hand in his pocket. Once he was closer, he wrapped an arm around Tomoki and started pulling him along side as he continued walking. "Everyone act casual and walk awake slowly."
"What? Why?" Zoe asked suspiciously.
"Because that digimon back there is going to notice I snuck off with the camera in about thirty seconds," JP said quickly. "So you know, move quickly but act casual."
"STOP! THIEVES!" Datamon shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Never mind! Run!" JP shouted at the top of his lungs, breaking off into a sprint while leaving them all behind. Tommy stared slack jawed as he watched JP take off with a speed he hadn't seen since they encountered the digimon trying to eat his chocolate. He glanced back over his shoulder to see Datamon running after them as quickly as his little legs could carry him.
"I'm not sure which is more impressive. Datamon running with those little legs or JP running at all," Koji observed as the little digimon came after them.
"You are mean today," Zoe retorted at Koji who just shrugged.
"We should probably join in the running too if we don't want to get caught! Here we go!" Tamer shouted, his sour expression turning into a great big smile as he started running after JP.
"We do so much running today," Koji grumbled.
"Yeah, but at least we're not running after Tamer this time! So that makes for a nice change of pace. Come on!" Zoe said with a frown, hurrying to join after them. Tomoki didn't hesitate to rush after them and it took a second longer for Koji to follow after them. They hurried as fast as they could with Datamon in hot pursuit. As they ran, Tomoki could hear the Guardian Spirit grumbling from inside the camera.
"First your friends do nothing but bicker, and now they steal. I'm starting to wonder if you guys are awful people," it echoed. Tomoki couldn't argue with that logic, but right now he was more concerned with getting away from the angry robot digimon. They kept on running through the crowd until they could no longer hear the angered cries of the robot digimon, then continued on until they were outside the village walls.
"How did you even get the camera from him?" Tomoki asked JP after finally having a moment to catch his breath.
"A little sleight of hand and misdirection!" JP shouted back, raising the camera out of his pocket to show it to them.
"Like a thief?" Zoe winced in disbelief.
"What? No! It's a magic trick!" JP said quickly to defend himself. He took a step back and rolled up his sleeves, "Here! Let me show you! Nothing up my sleeves! Now keep your eyes on the camera…and then…voila!"
Tomoki wasn't sure how he did it, since all JP did was flick his wrist, but he managed to make the old wooden camera disappear before their eyes. No smoke, no mirrors, only his hands and the camera was gone. "Whoa! That was so cool! JP, you never said you knew magic!"
"I did say I like magic tricks. Or can I assume no one was paying attention when I said that?" JP frowned, making a show of his arms. After a second, he stepped up to Tomoki and reached behind his ear. "And with a gentle yank…Tada!"
Tomoki was starstruck. Not only did JP make the camera disappear, but he reproduced it from behind Tomoki's ear. "Whoa! Do it again!"
"Yeah! Color me impressed," Zoe said with a big smile, making JP blush and turn away in embarrassment.
"It was nothing," he said quietly.
"I think it was pretty cool! Care to do it again? You'll need it you want to hide it from me," a voice said from behind Tommy. He jumped in a panic and leapt away towards Tamer, looking behind him to see none other than Arbormon again. The wooden tree digimon laughed. "Oh come on! Don't tell me that's all I get! I wanted to see a show, but I guess I'll have to entertain myself!"
