Darkest Temptations

Chapter Four: The Hunt Begins

Tyler Lockwood

It had been three days since Caroline, Elena, Jeremy and Sheriff Forbes had gone missing. I was the first one to suspect something was amiss, when I arrived at school that morning I had reached out to Stefan with my concerns.

Together we tracked Bonnie down in the school library in desperate need of some answers. She was already worried about Elena, they had planned to meet there that morning during first period to talk, Bonnie had called her cell five times already. When asked if she had spoken to Caroline that morning she replied that she had not. I held my breath when I watched Bonnie then scroll through her recent contact list, discovering her last call to Caroline dated over a month ago. There was no time or reason to focus on that, what mattered was finding out what was going on with them and why they hadn't shown up for school.

Stefan had called Damon and they two of them headed over to Elena's house while Bonnie and I made our way over to Caroline's house. I can still remember the smell that hit me the second I kicked in their back door, Bonnie practically chocking at the smell of all the fumes. The house was spotless, every surface had been dusted, every chrome surface and glass had been puffed to perfection as we had made our way through the kitchen and towards her bedroom. Nothing at all was missing from her room, no clothes, no photographs, even her laptop was in it's usual place by her bed. When we returned to the hall that's when we found the letter. The same letter claiming that she and Elena had gone away for a while following the events of the memorial, how Caroline believed she was the only one who could get Elena's bloodlust under control. She wrote that Elena had been suffering more than she was letting on and that this was necessary for her peace of mind.

I had noted immediately that it wasn't Caroline's handwriting, when Bonnie refused to believe it I had returned to her bedroom and tracked down her test cards from her desk to compare them to Bonnie's horror.

I called Stefan, when he didn't answer we made our way over to Elena's house finding both him and Damon upstairs in the hall. Neither of them said a word they just studied the floor below them, I remember bending down and lifting the edge of the area rug to reveal a blood splatters soaked into the lining of it.

None of us had slept since, each of us determined to find them and bring them home. We knew who was responsible, there was only one person in Mystic Falls right now who would want to hurt them both and cause us this pain and that was the hunter. He'd picked them out in the crowds of people attending the memorial, sensed what they were, decided their fate before following them home.

From what we have gathered so far, we believe that Elena was the first to be captured, possible due to the fact that she was still a new vampire and he believed her to be the weaker one of the pair.

What he didn't anticipate was Jeremy being there. From evidence and logistics gathered so far, it stands to reason that Elena was attacked and left to bleed out in the hallway downstairs. We gather that Jeremy was awoken by the sound, promoting the hunter to shoot him the second he ran out of his bedroom to help her due to the location of the collected blood splatters the floorboards upstairs and skirting edges. The blood samples collected from the house were a perfect match for both Elena and Jeremy.

We believe after taking them both he proceeded to clean up any and all evidence relating to their attack before ultimately targeting Caroline. From the minor blood splatters collected from her house it's believe the hunter may have used a knife when attacking both Caroline and Liz. After we finished using what resources we could from the Sheriff's office Damon had compelled every person involved in the investigation to tidy up any loss ends. We needed everyone else in town to believe that Sheriff Forbes had retired and that the others were merely out of town.

There was no doubt in our minds that we were going to track down the hunter and find the others.

Bonnie had tracked all number of locator spells to aid us in our search, every single time each new spell would bring us right back to the town line. Leading us to suspect that the hunter had not only taken all of them out of Mystic Falls he had somehow come up with a way of blocking our efforts to find them.

But yesterday things went from bad to worse.

After April Young was another no-show at school, Matt had taken it upon himself to go over to her father's house and check in on her. He'd been mentioning wanting to look in on her following the memorial. When she didn't answer the door he had tried the handle to find it unlocked. Upstairs on her bed he found a note, detailing her she had come to learn about vampires from her father and how at the memorial Elena had attempted to compel her into forgetting the vicious attack she endured by a man she didn't recognise. How that man had not only stabbed her but left her to bleed to death while he gunned another person down in the middle of her own father's memorial. She wrote that she had no one left in this life and the events she had endured had proven to her that Mystic Falls was no longer safe for her or anyone else. She finished by writing that she could hear the train coming and that it was time for her to finally find peace.

Matt had ran down to the train tracks as quickly as he could, stumbling along the way on a broken bottle of vodka splitting open his forearm.

April was nowhere to be found.

A few hours later the sheriff's department was on the scene but all they recovered from the tracks was some blood tracings and a torn piece of black fabric which we believed to be from the same dress she wore to the service that morning. She'd committed suicide three days ago and no one had even noticed she was gone. The reality of that had sent Bonnie racing to the bathroom where she was violently sick. She had known April all her life just as Elena did. We'd been so wrapped up on finding our loved ones that we had all failed her.

We never provided the sheriff's department with her suicide note. We burned it together in our own tribute to her life that night behind the Salvatore's house in the woods. That night our secrets died with her, allowing us to continue on with our search.

We'd been hunting the him, believing at a few points that we had gotten him before his scent once again disappeared. I had reached out to other hybrids and wolves for help but there was nothing they suggested that we hadn't already tried.

Knowing I would rather die then turn to Klaus for help Stefan had went to see him behind my back this morning. However when he arrived at the house no one was there, no staff or originals, he'd broken a window in the study and gone around the house finding nothing out of place. He'd even considered Klaus had left town for a moment, but when he came across Klaus's art collection upstairs he knew better. There was no way that materialistic bastard would leave town without his precious paintings. Stefan was sure he would return sooner or later and when he did he planned to use his resources to find them.

I wasn't going to stick around a second longer for them to tell me what I already knew, the hunter had taken Caroline from me and it was up to me alone to bring her back where she belonged.

I was leaving town within the hour and I was going to find the strongest witch out there to track down the hunter.

Caroline belonged with me.
