Darkest Temptations

Chapter Eight: Reality Check

Klaus Mikaelson

I forcefully swung the patio door shut, its resounding thud echoing through the air, threatening to shatter the delicate glass pane. My blood boiled with an infernal heat, a tempest of fury unleashed by the incidents that had recently unfolded. The muscles in my jaw constricted with an intensity that matched the boiling rage within me. I pressed my teeth together with a force that threatened to break them, a desperate attempt to restrain the tempest of fury surging through my veins. We hadn't even been in Utah for 48 hours, and yet our failures poised to unleash both significant obstacles and the relentless pursuit of law enforcement. In the kitchen, my voice had reverberated with a mixture of frustration and anger as I admonished the girls. Their lackadaisical approach to discipline and their disregard for the necessary security measures to safeguard our costly secret had ignited a fire within me. As I had yelled all three of them had instinctively averted their eyes, a deliberate act to shield themselves from my formidable presence.

Without a moment's hesitation, I embarked on my solitary journey towards my house with Elena, leaving them in my turbulent wake, a testament to the intensity of my outburst. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of looking back. Yet, an undeniable sensation prickled at the nape of my neck, as if the collective gaze of all three of them bore right through me. I pondered who among them harboured the deepest loathing for my very existence as they watched me leave. In that moment, I found myself in need of solitude, wanting to distance myself from their presence for a few hours if not the rest of the day.

I proceeded with a confident gait, my arms held still, my body taut, a deliberate display of the burden they had imposed upon me for their shortcomings. The morning had barely reached the double digits and I found myself entangled in the intricacies of Elena's first time on the schedule, burdened with the weighty task of safeguarding April's virtue, and being exasperated by Caroline's flagrant disregard for the sensibilities of our neighbours. I found myself ill-prepared to confront the immense responsibility of maintaining to and protecting the well-being of those around me. I wasn't prepared yet to shoulder the weighty mantle of a husband and engage in the domesticity of playing house.

In contemplation I found I could no longer envision a future wherein I would willingly assume the heavy mantle of a husband, with all the relating obligations and commitments it entailed.

Elena's countenance was consumed by an overwhelming bitterness and resentment, leaving her unable to articulate anything more than a mere handful of sentences. And I could feel my patience waning, unable to bear witness to her inevitable descent into a self-imposed guilt trip.

I'd already concluded that April hadn't slept a wink, her restless state evident in the two sizable cups of coffee she eagerly consumed during the car ride back to the houses. Her perpetual restlessness, a constant state of motion, served as a poignant reflection of her profound struggle to fully grasp the immense weight of her grief for her father.

The unexpected surge of Caroline's affections towards me this morning had left me hard and eager for more. Her kiss left me baffled and confused, as I grappled with the profound implications it held within it. Now she was cleaning in an effort to stop herself from considering her actions.

Once inside Elena's bedroom, I deftly retrieved my phone and coat, my mind consumed by a sudden need escape before anymore drama ensued. I directed my steps towards the front door, desiring nothing more than to climb into my car and drive. I wasn't prepared to accept the intricate details of this new life, a life that demanded my conversations with neighbours, the mundane task of taking out the garbage, or even the simple act of arranging the table for dinner.

I found myself ensnared within the spell, entangled in a life of a polygamist, because I simply couldn't bare the anguish reflected in Caroline's eyes that night. I had found myself captivated by the idea of sleeping with three different women simultaneously, all without the looming spectre of jealousy casting its shadow upon us. I'd entered into my marriages under deceitful pretences, and now I found myself enduring the inevitable consequences of my actions.

It was in their utmost interests that I depart now. Their friends would embrace them once more, heedless of the actions they had committed. I was neither the man or husband any of them deserved.

I resisted the urge to rev the engine of my Range Rover, though I couldn't help but firmly grasp the steering wheel afterwards. My gaze fixated on Caroline's front window finding April there alone and completely oblivious to the brutal reality that she would never lay eyes on me again after today. I was acutely aware of the error I had made in assuming the substantial responsibility of becoming her first lover. In her fragile state, she was nowhere prepared to embark upon the realm of sex, and I, was woefully incapable to navigate the immense tenderness that such a momentous occasion demanded.

Observing April from the car, my gaze fixated on her seductive movements as she sensually tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. I watched closely, as her delicate hands gracefully caressed the windowsill, igniting a stirring within me. Unable to resist, my eyes were irresistibly drawn to the alluring contours of her voluptuous breasts, beneath the sheer texture of her top.

If she had any inkling of the tantalising effect her body was having on me at this very second, I was certain it would ignite a fiery blush upon her ivory cheeks. I would have been irresistibly captivated by her, whether she possessed the innocence of a virgin or not. Her intoxicating beauty had already ensnared my senses, even back in the forest in Mystic Falls. Although it was Caroline alone that consumed my thoughts from the moment I hit the road that night.

I gazed intently as April sensually pressed the palm of her delicate hand against the transparent frame of the window, her mesmerising eyes locked onto mine, as if she had detected my desire to escape and was enticing me to stay, beckoning me with a seductive appeal she was unaware she even possessed, she was truly that innocent.

The reality was that all three of them aroused me intensely, so much so I hadn't even made it home that night in Mystic Falls before I had no choice but to rub one out. Just minutes after leaving them in the forest I pulled over on the side of the road, my mind was consumed with vivid fantasies of them, envisioning their enticing figures illuminated by the flickering firelight. The flames danced upon their glistening skin, causing rivulets of sweat to cascade sensually down into the depths of their cleavage.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a good enough reason for me to stay in Utah.

I couldn't resist stealing glances at April as I manoeuvred my way out of the driveway.

As I accelerated my car down the street I felt closer to the edge of liberation. If I had chosen to stay, my mind would have concocted a tantalising plan to seduce one of them before the end of the week. And I couldn't do that to them, whether or not they were aware of it yet, they were all they had now.

They certainly didn't have me in their corner.

Not anymore.

With a swift motion, I synchronised my phone with the car's Bluetooth system. As I navigated through the options on the screen adorning my dashboard, my anticipation grew palpable. I needed to speak a particular person before I made any further plans about what my next steps would be from here.

"Hello?"

They finally answered, their tone flat and tired as I suspected it would be given our different time zones.

"It's me"

"Yeah thanks boss I do have caller ID" He said with a groan

"Keep it up and you won't get paid"

"Far enough"

"There's been a change of plans, we're moving up the agreed upon date."

"Ok when do you need them by?"

"Tonight"

"Only for you boss. I'll begin working on them now"

"There's one last item I wanted added to the list...something new"

Caroline Mikaelson

I wandered from the confines of the kitchen, to the entrance into the sitting room, to retrieve the elusive pair of scissors that eluded me. Yet, as I set out on my search, an unexpected presence stopped me. There, standing with her back to the large front window, was April. Her once vibrant eyes now appeared sunken, and her expression bore an inexplicable expression, one that left me immediately wondering if something was wrong.

Elena and I had forewarned her about the tempestuous nature of Klaus, yet I had doubts as to whether she truly comprehended the gravity of his anger. Now she had witnessed his fury for the first time, and the consequences of that encounter left an indelible mark upon her.

"Are you alright?"

"I just didn't think we'd be fighting so quickly"

April's gaze rose, her eyes meeting mine in a swift motion. In that instant, the astonishment etched upon her face was unmistakable. She had expected to find me confined and wounded by his explosive tirade, yet to her surprise, I stood before her unscathed, my composure intact.

"I don't get it, how are you alright right now?"

"I think," I murmured, my voice trailing off as I inched closer towards her, "I think that we all react differently when things happen to us. And right now you're dealing with more than all of us combined." I declared, my arms folding across my chest as I positioned myself directly before her. "So whatever you're feeling right now, don't hide it." I urged.

April's sigh hung in the air, her eyes, filled with a mix of vulnerability and resolve, met mine, as if pleading for understanding. "I cannot bear the idea of anyone thinking that me being here is solely a result of my grief for my father," she confessed, her voice tinged with a hint of desperation. She gently shook her head, her eyes filled with a bittersweet sorrow. "Though it pains me to admit, I'm doing alright out here, and I said my goodbyes on the road." she whispered, her voice carrying a hint of melancholy.

I wrapped my arms around her then, April, with equal enthusiasm, reciprocated the gesture, her arms encircling me in a tight hug. In that fleeting instant, I'd never more certain regarding my decision to become first wife, I was always meant to take on the responsibility of taking care of the three of us from the rest of the world.

Afterwards April headed back to her own house.

Seeing the empty driveway concerned me and an inexplicable lump materialised in the recesses of my throat. April was acutely aware of his absence, that's why she'd appeared so worried before. In that moment, the pieces of the puzzle were finally falling into place. As I pondered the circumstances, a lingering question arose within me, was Elena aware of he was gone? She'd walked out of the kitchen in the wake of his outburst returning home without a word said about it.

Worrying that he was gone for good I had run upstairs with my heart pounding in my chest. As I entered the master bedroom, my eyes darted anxiously around the room, desperately searching, and found his luggage, still nestled in its designated spot, untouched and undisturbed.

Klaus shouldn't have snapped at us the way he did, the way he had spoken and looked at all three of us wasn't right, but rather an egregious display of nepotism. However, it would be unjust not to anticipate an alternative response from him in light of our actions. Klaus's anger was justified, as we found us almost paralysed in the face of necessity, failing to take action when it mattered most. He had imparted upon us the imperative measures to be taken, to ensure that no unwelcome visits from the neighbours. And we regrettably neglected to execute each and every one of these precautionary actions.

Engrossed in the task at hand, I dedicated well over an hour to the meticulous unpacking of the remaining kitchen items. As a result, the second sitting room remained cluttered with neatly folded boxes and carefully arranged bags of protective packaging materials.

I tried to call him but he didn't respond and when I tried again I discovered his phone had been switched off.

I was trying my best to focus on what needed to be done, yet the alarming notion that he might have left us weighted heavily upon me. He had caller ID he knew it was me trying to reach him and yet he had ignored my call, he'd never done that in the past not once.

Upon the completion of my endeavours in the kitchen, I beheld a sight that mirrored the very essence of my desires. The counter surfaces, meticulously arranged, exuded an air of tasteful simplicity, devoid of any unnecessary clutter. Instead, they were adorned with the finest specimens of culinary technology, befitting a new home.

The meticulously crafted cabinets, adorned with elegant panes of glass, proudly showcased the opulent collection of recently polished crystal glasses that I had meticulously selected. Adjacent to the gleaming stove, another set of cabinets, equally resplendent, housed an array of sterling silver pots and pans, their lustrous surfaces reflecting the light with a captivating allure.

A resounding knock at the front door, caused me to instinctively squeeze my eyes shut. The realisation washed over me that, once again, I had neglected to draw the blinds and lock any of the doors. At vampire speed I made my way from the kitchen and didn't stop until I arrived at the peep hole, a small portal through where I could observed. As I peered through its glassy lens, a mysterious figure clad in an impeccably black suit materialised before me clutching a clipboard.

"Mrs Mikaelson?"

He was the first person to address me by my married name.

Without hesitation, the man gracefully extended his hand, introducing himself as Michael Jefferson. As one of the senior security engineer hailing from the esteemed Jefferson Secure, the preeminent security firm in the entire state. He had been duly informed, through a series of correspondences with Klaus, that I might be alone in the house that morning when they arrived. Consequently, he was tasked with the responsibility of conducting a formal introduction prior to commencing their work.

In that moment, my gaze descended upon the street, where a pair of colossal vans adorned with the insignia of Jefferson Secure caught my attention. A multitude of individuals, their purpose veiled in mystery, diligently unloaded an assortment of floodlights and enigmatic equipment from the back of them. Michael proceeded to clarify the factors surrounding Klaus's decision to opt for the expeditious delivery service for the esteemed platinum package, thereby offering a plausible explanation for their untimely presence so early in the morning.

He proceeded to provide me with the utmost reassurance, assuring me that Klaus' emails had meticulously outlined all the precise works, measurements and locations. With this knowledge, there was no need for undue concern on my part. I was encouraged to simply carry on with my day while they diligently carried out their work. It was with great emphasis that my husband had decreed that I should not be disturbed. Before departing to join his staff across the street, Michael graciously furnished me with a comprehensive compilation of the tasks that would be accomplished by the close of business that very day for all three properties in question.

I was rendered utterly speechless upon the revelation that Klaus had engaged the services of security specialists on his first day in Utah. Unbeknownst to us, he had orchestrated a series of precautions to safeguard us, likely expending a considerable sum to get them here so quickly, all with the aim of granting we slept soundly in our beds.

Just as I was on the verge of closing the door, a peculiar sight captured my attention. With a resounding rumble, a UBS truck drew up in front of Elena's house. Emerging from its metallic confines, a vivacious young woman, adorned in the distinguished attire of the esteemed company, gracefully emerged onto the pavement. With grace and purpose, she retrieved two mysterious charcoal grey packages from the depths of the truck while clutching a clipboard in her other hand. Without pause she turned in the direction of Elena's house and headed up the pathway I stepped forward onto the front porch, my gaze fixated upon the unfolding scene. Elena very hesitantly opened the door, and took her time accepting the parcel before affixing her signature upon the paperwork.

As I observed Elena's graceful demeanour as she carried the package into her house, my focus swiftly diverted from her to the UBS employee, who did not to return to her vehicle but rather proceeded towards the direction of my house. As fate would have it, the enigmatic second package in question was for me. As my gaze fell upon the address label, the script revealed the recipient as Mrs Caroline Mikaelson.

In a moment of profound significance, I took the pen and delicately inscribed upon the parchment the name that would stood as testament to the next phase of my life, Mrs. Mikaelson.

Without giving any further consideration to the security team on the brink of commencing their undisclosed tasks around my residence, I hastily shut over but did not lock the front door. With a sense of anticipation, I fixated my gaze upon the mysterious package nestled securely within my grasp. Carefully, I carried it to the staircase behind me, where I sat down, I settled the information given to me by Michael to one side before I began to open the package without hesitation.

Within the enigmatic parcel, I discovered a sombre binder. Resting atop it I found an envelope, its presence beckoning my immediate attention. I delicately unfurled its seal and embarked upon the words inscribed within.

THE NEXT UPDATE WILL BE THE FIRST OF NEXT MONTH.

"Update on what?"

Intrigued by the obscure message, I cautiously unfurled the binder, my curiosity piqued.

As I viewed the contents nestled within the confines of the binder, my eyes to brim with tears.

Within the confines of the binder lay the chronicles of my mother's journey since her departure from Mystic Falls. Photographs were captured of her, their lenses capturing her from a considerable distance. To my immense relief, she appeared to be in a state of robust health, exuding an aura of well-being and smiling often. Photographs of her heading into the house that was her home in Maine surpassed my wildest conjectures. Nestled discreetly behind the meticulously captured photographs of her, lay a collection of her newly constructed identifications - an assemblage that encompassed her driver's licence, passport, birth certificate, and even confidential medical records. Tears welled up in my eyes as I stumbled upon the freshly established bank account, bearing her name. To my utter astonishment, an astronomical sum of five million dollars had been meticulously deposited into her savings account, coinciding precisely with the night Klaus and I got married. He had given me his word that she would be attended to, and true to his word, he had fulfilled it. In the tranquil embrace of Maine, she found solace and security, armed with the necessary resources to sustain her for the rest of her life.

I found myself clutching the binder tightly against my chest, overcome with emotion. Tears streamed down my face as I whispered the words 'thank you' repeatedly, my voice barely audible amidst my sobs. There was nothing left for me to do but surrender to the overwhelming flood of tears.

The motives behind Klaus' actions remained shrouded in ambiguity, leaving me to ponder whether his intentions were driven by pity, honour, or because he wanted to have sex with me. Regardless I found myself filled with gratitude.

The crisp, untainted air of Utah enveloped my senses, filling my lungs with a purity that seemed to cleanse my soul. Despite my overwhelming joy since coming here, there had been a singular matter that had been burdening my thoughts. With the assurance that she was indeed safe, an immense feeling of relief washed over me, as if a heavy burden had been effortlessly lifted from my weary shoulders.

As I delicately dabbed at the tears welling in my eyes, my focus was irresistibly drawn downwards, towards the paperwork that Michael had imparted to me earlier. I carefully set down the binder upon my lap, ensuring its contents were sealed tight. With a supple motion, I retrieved the meticulously outlined particulars of the esteemed Platinum plan, along with the meticulously crafted plans by Klaus in his emails to Michael.

The opulent platinum package, meticulously curated by Jefferson Secure, epitomised the pinnacle of excellence within their esteemed repertoire of corporate services. By the end of today, the completion of the listing below for all three properties would be achieved.

The installation of home alarm systems would be secured with utmost precision, ensuring the utmost security and tranquilly within the confines of the residence.

Panic alarms, would be strategically positioned in every bedroom, kitchen, and front door, serving as a steadfast safeguard against any potential threats that may arise.

Flood lights would be meticulously installed on both the northern and southern faces of each of the three properties.

The installation of CCTV in each of the three properties peepholes would serve as an astute measure to diligently oversee any external occurrences and visits.

The alteration of locks on the front and back doors of each of the three properties.

In a strategic endeavour, a harmonious agreement was forged with the esteemed Lerkins Enterprises, a reputable local construction firm, an external vendor with Jefferson Secure. Would construct a magnificent wooden fence, seamlessly extending across the expanse of all three neighbouring backyards. This ingenious solution not only preserved the interconnectedness of the yards, but also introduced an exquisite exterior elm fence, effectively shielding any prying eyes from witnessing the intermingling between the houses.

Putting it simply, all three backyards would remain levelled while a fence would wrap around the backyards of all three of our houses keeping us safe and keeping people out.

In an effort to avoid the men working with Jefferson Secure to see me wandering into April and Elena's houses, I opted to text both of them instead. By conveying the necessary details, I sought to pre-empt any potential alarm that might arise when the diligent workers from Jefferson Secure commenced their tasks within all three houses.

April immediately responded and although Elena's text was marked as 'seen' she did not respond to it.

After nestling all the gathered information upstairs in one of my luggage cases, I quickly discovered the men of Jefferson Secure were all kind natured, their spirits imbued with an unwavering positivity. Each individual appeared to derive immense satisfaction from the noble task of safeguarding people's homes, as if it bestowed upon them a profound sense of meaning and fulfilment. I had looked out the window towards Elena and April's homes and saw both of them standing their backyards, engaged in conversation with various employees. Their attentive nods suggested a genuine interest in the matters being discussed.

I made another valiant attempt to reach Klaus, my heart pounding the whole time only to find my efforts were in vain, for his phone remained stubbornly switched off. I wasn't going to leave him a voicemail for I doubted he'd listen to it even if I did.

"Where are you?" I whispered softly.

For the rest of the day I immersed myself in the task of constructing the shelf cabinets that would house our future abundance of bulk items and cherished holiday ornaments. Time seemed to slip away and I welcomed the much-needed diversion from the ceaseless torment of thinking about Klaus' whereabouts.

Throughout the day, Elena April and I kept in touch through texts, careful not to arouse any suspicion among the watchful eyes of the workmen out back. Elena was arranging her new kitchenware, meanwhile, April wrestled with the perplexing intricacies of her television, hoping to coax it into submission. It was April who dared to break the silence and inquire if any word from Klaus.

Jefferson Secure and his trusted crew from Lerkins Enterprises concluded their meticulous work. I was provided with a temporary code for my new alarm system, along with my new keys to all the locks on the doors and windows.

An hour after they departed it began to rain. Amidst a sea of boxes awaiting their contents to be disclosed, I found myself bereft of the motivation to unpack. I couldn't stop thinking about Klaus and I suspected I wasn't the only one. I gazed longingly through the glass pane, my eyes fixated on the illuminated windows of both Elena and April's homes.

I resolved to make my way to Elena's house, yearning for an overdue heart to heart wherein we could delve into the intricacies of our move and the deep intertwining of our shared marriage to Klaus.

With my jacket as my only defence against the relentless downpour, I raised it above my head and hastened across the connecting backyards towards her inviting patio doors. To my great fortune, they remained unlocked granting me entry. I gently closed the doors behind me, sealing off the outside world. Elena remained positioned behind me in the kitchen, diligently engrossed in the arduous task of unpacking her numerous boxes.

Elena graced me with a smile, her lips curving gently as I settled onto one of the lofty stools adorning my side of the counter. With a delicate motion, I placed my jacket aside. I cast my eyes upon the objects adorning the various countertops, finding only the finest brands. It was abundantly clear to me that Klaus was the mastermind behind these particular purchases. After all, I had long been aware of Elena's culinary shortcomings, rendering it highly improbable that she could have been the one responsible.

I was on the verge of speaking when I abruptly halted, my gaze fixated upon a binder that bore an uncanny resemblance, resting upon the countertop situated at across from me now. Elena's gaze traced the path of my eyes, landing on the binder, before returning to me.

"I got it this morning. It's-"

"It's about Jeremy"

Elena's brow furrowed "Yeah how did you know that?"

"Because I got the same binder, it was about my mom."

"Wait you did?"

"I did."

Elena delicately cradled the exquisite blender in her poised hands, gently placing it upon the nearest countertop. She then walked across the kitchen, positioning herself on the other side of the counter.

"Is she alright?"

I nodded feeling the imminent surge of tears that yearned to breach the surface of my eyes.

"From the looks of it she's doing great. All of her new IDs look amazing and I couldn't imagine a better place for her. She's gonna be really happy there."

Elena sighed heavily in relief and we both reached out and clasped each other's hands for a moment before releasing.

"What about Jeremy?" I inquired

Elena's lips curved upward, a delicate response to my question, and within the depths of her gaze, a glimmer of shine emerged, a glow that had been absent ever since we left Mystic Falls.

"He's doing really great. He's rented an apartment and already gotten a new haircut. There's photographs of him visiting community colleges too."

"Elena that's amazing! That's so good"

"I know" She agreed with a warm smile.

I cast my gaze upon my entwined fingers, resting delicately upon the smooth expanse of the countertop, and inquired with a hushed tone, "Were there any pieces of bank-related documents?"

"Erm, yeah, actually...there was."

Our eyes met, her voice tinged with uncertainty "But I don't know how I feel about it. I wasn't expecting Klaus to do something like this and I don't know what his intensions are by giving Jeremy that money."

I swallowed hard before summing up the courage to ask "How much are we talking about exactly?"

Elena's gaze descended, as she responded, "Ten million dollars."

Klaus, in his benevolence, presented upon Jeremy a sum of ten million dollars, a generous gift that would enable him to embark upon a fresh chapter beyond the confines of Mystic Falls. Ten million dollars to an individual whom Klaus had encountered on only a few occasions, an individual to whom he did not owe any obligation to. I could say the same thing about the selfless he had shown towards my mom. I understood why he gave Jeremy more, he was young with his entire life ahead of him, it only made sense.

Elena stood before me, her words caught in her throat, a reflection of her inner turmoil. I empathised with her silence, comprehending the weight of her unspoken thoughts. She harboured doubts about the genuine intentions behind his seemingly generous actions, a motive that could only be speculated upon. Elena and I weren't stupid, for we shared the same understanding that Klaus had purposefully orchestrated this in order to seduce us.

"I don't know what to think about it either." I confessed

"So he did the same for you?"

"For her" I corrected.

"Can we-" Elena paused to collect herself for a moment "Can we at least not pretend with each other?"

I held onto her gaze for a moment before I nodded my head in agreement "Okay" I said

Elena sighed in frustration and began drumming her nails on the kitchen counter.

"Did he do this to sleep with us?"

"I don't know"

"You really mean that?"

"I do," I said, my gaze unwavering as it locked with hers, each syllable imbued with the weight of my sincerity.

Elena, turned around and resumed her unpacking, perhaps in an attempt to distract herself from the ongoing conversation.

"I'm not going to sit here and pretend I know how his mind works. And I'm not going to lie and pretend I don't know the man he is. I think we both know what he thinks when he looks at the three of us."

Elena nodded her head as she delicately removed the protective shrink wrap encasing the exquisite glass vase.

"But what I'm holding onto is the reality of our circumstances."

Elena paused in her task to look across at me then.

"If all he wanted to do was to sleep with us then he could have compelled us into believing we wanted to be with him. But instead he chose this life with us."

Elena's steadfast gaze remained locked with mine, as I pressed on.

"He said yes when he could have very easily said no. We left everything behind that was precious to us. And we're not going to pretend to be monsters and act like he didn't do the same thing. Back in Mystic Falls there will be items from his childhood that he'll never see again, drawings of his family, cherished artefacts never to be seen, touched or smelt again"

I observed as the faint glimmer of tears began to pool in Elena's eyes, then.

"I'm sure he didn't marry us with the greatest intensions. He's still Klaus through and through and nothing and no one will ever change him." I said, my voice hushed and delicate, for it was a moment of deeply emotional moment for both of us.

"None of us entered into this for selfless reasons. We're each getting something out of this new life that we could never have gotten back home. The chance to be the very best versions of ourselves, free from the judgement of those who think they know who we're suppose to be instead of who we were always meant to be."

I watched the tears cascading down Elena's delicate cheeks, yet her steadfast stare remained fixed upon mine as I continued.

"I know you miss them. I can see you are suffering and it breaks my heart. But I'm going to tell you what you need to hear and I need you to listen to me."

Elena sniffled in response but her eyes remained fixed on mine.

"We did what we had to do." I declared resolutely, my unwavering gaze unbroken, my voice steeped in gravity.

After a beat Elena began to nod her head in agreement.

"They saved our lives again and again. But that doesn't mean that we owe them our entire lives. For as much as they saved us, we saved them right back. We were dedicated to our friendships for years and we were right by their sides in the same life and death situations."

My own eyes threatening tears then as I said "We'll never forgive ourselves for what we did that night. We'll carry it forever, we'll recall it every time we find ourselves smiling without reason, when our heads find the softest part of the pillow and on even on the day we finally have babies."

Tears escaping my eyes then.

"I just, I don't know how to do this" Elena confessed

"None of us do." I said before wiping my cheeks

Elena delicately brushed away the tears that had cascaded down her cheeks, she returned to the same spot as before, standing before me again.

"They say the first year of marriage is the hardest, but I think it's the first forty eight hours when you're a polygamist."

Elena sniffled and nodded in agreement on that one.

Her eyes, glistening with tears, locked onto mine, and with a burdened heart, she revealed, "The first hour we were here, I thought I might lose it"

"Me too" I confessed as a single tear escaped down my cheek

"I don't know how April is keeping it together so well."

"She didn't have anything to leave behind, Elena. The only stuff in her luggage would have been stuff she had in her room at boarding school. Her childhood went up in flames. She isn't carrying the burden of what she left behind, she's carrying the burden of what comes next for her."

Elena effortlessly retrieved a roll of kitchen roll from the nearest box, gently tearing off a few fresh sheets for our tear-stained eyes.

"I just figured Klaus liked how well she was dealing with things since he asked her to go into town with him this morning."

"I was wondering about that too. I just figured she asked to tag along."

"No it was him."

"I wonder what the two of them had to say to each other before morning coffee."

"Yeah it's quite a mystery"

I watched Elena as she meticulously folded and unfolded the delicate tissue in her hands, her silence speaking volumes in that moment.

"I didn't sleep with him" I confessed the answer to the unasked question heavy in her mind.

"I didn't ask."

"No you didn't have to."

Elena's gaze met mine, and in that moment, I discerned that she meant no offence. She would not have cast any judgement upon me, even if I had chosen to sleep with Klaus. For she possessed a rare quality, an innate curiosity, a trait I could not find fault with.

"Did you sleep in the same bed?"

"Yeah." I answered after a beat.

Again Elena lowered her gaze before she spoke again "Do you think he expects to sha-"

Before Elena could finish her thought a synchronous chime resonated from both our phones.

In that moment, our hands instinctively gravitated towards them. As I unlocked mine, finding a text from Klaus. Yet, it was not a message that awaited me, but rather an address.

"It's from Klaus, I don't recognise the address do you?" I asked studying it.

"He didn't send me an address"

I lifted my gaze to look over toward her, only to discover that her gaze remained steadfastly affixed to the screen before her.

"What did he say?" I asked

Instead of responding, Elena extended her hand, offering me the phone, so that I might see the text for myself. It appeared as though her gaze could not meet mine, as if she were embarrassed about something all of a sudden.

I cast my attention down to the screen and after reading the message I found I couldn't look at her either.

You don't have to come.

Neither of us could utter a single word not even when we heard the patio door open and shut behind us.

"Klaus just text me an address." April announced as she arrived at my side "Do you guys know what's going on?"

Despite her objections not to come with us Elena very reluctantly agreed to join April and I. As April and I ventured back into the open air, I discovered that the rain had ceased its gentle descent, leaving behind a renewed atmosphere that carried the unmistakable scent of purity, akin to the aftermath of a snowfall.

"You really have no idea what's going on?" April asked as she followed closely behind me towards her house.

"Let's find out"

I heard April open and shut her patio door behind me as I hurried towards my house to grab my coat and the keys to the station wagon. Upstairs in my room I sought out a sleek black coat from amongst my array of luggage cases, its fabric as delicate as my skin. Accompanying this garment, I selected a pair of black sway ankle boots.

As I stood delicately on my stiletto heels, my delicate fingers clutched my phone against my ear, I attempted to call Klaus only to have him send my call straight to voicemail.

"Seriously?"

I released a deep, exasperated sigh as I made my way down the stairs in a huff. With purposeful strides, I snatched my keys from their resting place atop a box in the sitting room, my determination propelling me towards the front door. As I locked the front door I looked over my shoulder to find Elena and April hurriedly making their way towards my driveway, Elena was also wearing a black coat while April had selected an oversized white hoodie.

"I've entered the address into my map app" April announced as we all climbed inside my car.

I was trying to listen to the instructions of the navigation system all the while pondering the most potent sensation of déjà vu. I glanced over at both of them then recalling the exact moment we had climbed into this car that night in Mystic Falls and how terrified we all were.

"Do you think he's there?" April asked

"Honestly I don't know what to think" I replied as I reversed out of the driveway.

The map guided us through the heart of the town, where the vibrant Utah nightlife thrived. Despite the late hour, a handful of restaurants remained open, their inviting lights beckoning drivers to indulge in a delectable meal. As we continued our journey, we couldn't help but notice the bustling nightclubs too, their popularity evident by the long queues that stretched around the block. None of us said a word the entire time we were in the car for none of us knew what to say in that moment. Each one of us, consumed by a profound curiosity, remained entranced by the mysteries that awaited us.

The directions led us to the other side of town almost an hour driving time total. As we arrived, I cut the engine to the car while my gaze remained fixated upon the building that stood alone before us. Gradually, I shifted my attention to both Elena and April, who, much like myself, were rendered stunned and speechless.

"What the hell?" I said

Klaus' directions had brought us to a rather unconventional establishment—a strip club.

"I'm not going in there" I told them making my choice abundantly clear.

"Maybe he's drunk" April suggested then

"Drunk enough to send all three of us a different text?" I replied

I turned my attention towards Elena and asked "What do you think we should do?"

"We should go in" April said from the backseat

"I think we have to. If just to talk to him about what's going on." Elena responded.

"It's a strip club"

Before we could engage in any further debate, April effortlessly disconnected her seat belt and quickly opened her car door.

"Will you just wait a second" I implored her

As we watched April cross the street towards the club, we had no choice but to trail behind her.

The street surrounding the club was bustling with night life, as individuals adorned in refined club attire graced its thoroughfare. Their garments, tastefully selected, refrained from excessive exposure or flamboyance, exuding an air of understated and timeless elegance. The establishment bore the name Sinful Desires, its moniker emblazoned in vibrant neon pink lights that illuminated both the front facade and the side of the grand two-story building. The structure, in all its grandeur, stood resplendent in a pristine coat of white paint, devoid of any windows that would betray the secrets held within, much like the opulent casinos that grace the bustling streets of Las Vegas. At the entrance, a pair of imposing bouncers stood guard, their presence commanding respect. A seemingly endless queue of men stretched behind a long row of dividers made of vibrant red tones, each one brimming with anticipation, yearning to partake in the enchantment that awaited them beyond the threshold.

We had barely succeeded in catching up with April as we navigated past the entrance doors, on the verge of joining the tail end of the queue to gain entry. To their astonishment, I abruptly halted in my steps, compelling them to follow suit. With a swift pivot on my delicate heels, I turned towards the formidable duo of brawny bouncers stationed at the entrance, their expressions betraying a distinct lack of awe as we encroached upon their domain.

"Back of the line ladies" One of them said immediately before we could say a word.

"Uh, our, I mean, my husband is inside" I said my voice quivered with trepidation as I mustered the courage to refer to myself as Klaus' wife.

"A lot of husbands inside tonight sorry to say"

"Oh uh, no you don't understand-"

"I don't?"

"Uh no, I'm not here to cause a scene-"

"We hear that a lot, that's how Mitchell here got those pins in his knee."

"No look, my husband asked us to come down here."

"Congratulations sounds like the perfect marriage."

I rolled my eyes before asking "Look he asked us to come down here, can't you just send someone in there to get him?"

"Hold up-" The other bouncer said then before approaching us, lowering his black sunglasses to study me "Are you Caroline Mikaelson?"

I nodded my head.

"Better let her in." The bouncer we'd been dealing with said next.

Without another word spoken, the bouncer, with a single fluid motion, released the velvet rope granting us entry.

As we were graciously granted the chance ahead of the men in the queue, a wave of anger erupted from their midst. However, their discontent was swiftly quelled by the bouncer who came to our aid, his commanding voice rising above the clamour as he bellowed, "SHUT UP!" silencing them in fear of him.

We shifted our gaze towards the bouncer in question, captivated by his commanding voice. In that moment, his countenance transformed, a mischievous glimmer dancing in his eyes as he bestowed upon us a knowing wink. "Have a good time, ladies"

Together, we ventured into the pulsating heart of the club, our steps in perfect synchrony. Instantly, we were ensnared by the kaleidoscope of neon lights that bathed the interior, casting an ethereal glow upon our surroundings. The walls, adorned in a cloak of darkness, were adorned with a lavish tapestry of golden glitter, captivating our senses and beckoning us further into this nocturnal realm. The darkness enveloped us as we ventured forth, its impenetrable shroud compelling us to seek solace in each other's presence. As the two grand black curtains before us were gracefully drawn apart, revealing a sight that extended far beyond our line of vision, we found ourselves ushered into the heart of the club. The music reverberated with an intensity that paled in comparison to the resounding cheers of the patrons, their fervour palpable as they exalted the women gracing the individual stages and platforms. The women upon the stage effortlessly shed their clothes, as if it were an act of pure nonchalance. Their exposed breasts captivated the attention of the men in the room, who eagerly adorned the stage with a cascade of dollar bills, their enthusiasm unyielding and devoid of any hesitation.

"Toto, I don't think we're in Mystic Falls anymore" April called to us over the music.

The ethereal glow of the flickering lights danced upon the numerous pillars that adorned the dimly lit room, casting a mesmerising radiance upon their exposed flesh. The expansive, L-shaped bar stretched across the entire expanse of the room, its shelves brimming with an abundant array of supplies, visible even from afar. Before me, an exquisite array of bottles stood proudly, each one holding the key to crafting extraordinary cocktails. I longed to indulge in their intoxicating remedies, yearning for a sip to transport me away from the confines of my reality.

"Can you see him anywhere?" Elena shouted over the deafening music.

I lifted my gaze towards the lofty expanse above, a second floor that seemed to extend the entire breadth of the room. Pillars and secluded alcoves adorned the space, while poles stood tall by private booths. Certain areas of the second floor were concealed by dark drapes, ensuring that the activities transpiring behind them remained hidden from prying eyes. It was in that moment that my gaze fell upon Klaus, who stood next to a man clad in a tailored suit. Engrossed in conversation, their eyes wandered across the expanse of the floor. Klaus's fingers clung to the ornate railing of the balcony, his gaze locking with mine then. With a swift motion, he shifted towards the gentleman standing beside him, who extended his hand in a gesture of eager unity. Klaus, ever the gentleman, graciously accepted the proffered hand before redirecting his attention back to me.

"Let's go to the bar" I shouted to the girls

We settled onto the plush, ivory-hued stools, their supple leather embracing us with a gentle caress. A barmaid swiftly approached, her demeanour exuding warmth and hospitality. She graciously acknowledged our presence, expressing her delight at the rarity of female patrons gracing their establishment. This unexpected shift in clientele brought her a refreshing sense of novelty, a delightful change of pace in her nightly service. I discreetly requested a round of orange juice for the three of us. Then after carefully ensuring that Elena and April's attention was elsewhere. I subtlety gestured, and directed the attention of the barmaid towards the enticing bottle of vodka positioned to her left, before subtly indicating my desire for a shot. She bestowed upon me a knowing smile, her eyes filled with understanding, and gracefully nodded in response. With deft swiftness, she surreptitiously infused a measure of vodka into my glass, before presenting our drinks to us.

"Ladies please enjoy and if you need anything more tonight my name is Erin and I'm happy to help."

The barmaid departed from our midst, April gracefully brought her glass to her lips, taking a languid sip before commenting "She is so nice, I wonder if she's a dancer here too." her voice carrying a hint of intrigue.

Before I could partake in the simple pleasure of savouring a sip of my own, a hand, firm yet gentle, enveloped mine in an unexpected embrace. My eyes, compelled by curiosity, ascended to meet the gaze of none other than Klaus, who had materialised at my side. His hand clamped around mine, exerting a force that compelled me to surrender the glass, and I complied without hesitation. The gaze in his eye conveyed to me that he had indeed witnessed the barmaid surreptitiously infusing my drink with an additional element, and his countenance revealed his lack of amusement regarding my indiscretion.

"Seriously?" I mouthed to him unbeknownst to Elena and April at that moment.

Klaus drew nearer to me, his lips grazing my cheek, igniting a tightening between my legs. With a hint of rebellion in his voice, he said, "Don't you make me put you over my knee."

"Where have you been?" Elena asked after Klaus pulled away from me.

"Here"

"You've been here? Like all day?" April asked him then

"What's surprising is the total lack of surprise" I mumbled.

"Why did you ask us to come here?" Elena asked

"I didn't ask" Klaus's gaze bore into hers, a reminder to Elena that his invitation had not extended to her, but only to April and me.

"What's going on with you?"

Klaus looked towards me then before answering "I've found the solution to all our problems"

"What do you mean by that?"

"Yeah what do you mean?" April enquired eagerly

"Congratulate me darlings I just bought this place."

For a moment none of us said anything as the weight of Klaus's recent acquisition of a strip club settling upon us like a heavy fog. Diverting my gaze from his smirking countenance, I directed my attention towards April, who appeared utterly flabbergasted, her jaw hanging precariously close to the floor. Meanwhile, Elena's eyes darting around uncertainly, clearly grappling with the weight of his decision.

"Are you out of your mind?" I implored him, my anger unconcealed.

"I do love to surprise you."

"This isn't a surprise it's a problem."

"It's a solution"

"Explain" I dared him as I crossed my arms.

"A perpetual stream of revenue was necessary to elucidate the means by which I acquired the three houses. I found myself in desperate need of a venture that would effectively divert my attention away from the confines of my new homes, whilst also ensuring that it did not plunge me into the depths of intoxication. I need to dwell in both worlds, be being up top and in the depths of the underground. This place affords me precisely that, grappling with the dregs and the assurance of turmoil on a nightly basis, tends to the beast residing within me."

"Sounds like it works out just for you"

"Being the owner means being in control of the hiring process and I have suddenly find myself in need of three managers"

"You cannot be serious"

"I'm going to need to see that little schedule of yours because I'm making my first decision as the lead of this little family. New rule, on the days you're not scheduled to share your night with me, you'll be working here with me at the club."

"Klaus that won't work" I told him

"Well the old saying of don't bring your work home with you is very true indeed. That's why I've made the decision that I won't be going home to the same wife I've just spent the entire night working alongside. I'll be going home to the one I haven't seen all day."

I glanced towards a speechless Elena and an almost amused April, who was valiantly attempting to suppress her bubbling excitement at the prospect of assuming the role of club manager.

"Say something" I shouted loudly.

"I don't know what to say" Elena responded

"So does that mean we're staying?" April asked him her eyes full of glee and sparkle.

I turned my gaze towards Klaus, his lips curling into a malicious and conceited smirk "The Mikaelsons aren't going anywhere." he declared.
