Chapter 6

Disclaimer: I do NOT own the Chosen. Dallas Jenkins does and I am NOT making any money off of this. Thank you and God Bless you!

AN: I should note now that none of this happened in the Bible and my OCs Hanna and Maya did not even exist. They are fictional. And adoption seems to be the theme of this story!

Hanna was up bright and early the next morning, yawning a little as she walked downstairs. She had slept through the night for the first time in two years and she felt great.

"Hey sleepyhead" Gaius teased his daughter just as he was about to walk out the door.

"Oh very funny" she said, laughing as she kissed her father's cheek. "I actually slept really well."

"Have a good day dear" Livia said as she kissed her husband, wrapping an arm around Hanna as she did so.

"Tell the boys to have a good day for me" Gaius said before hugging Hanna tightly, kissing her temple.

"You go and spend some time with Maya today" he said into her hair before letting her go. "Love you."

"Love you too" Hanna said waving a bit as her father walked out the door.

"Is Maya you're best friend?" Livia asked as they both walked into the dining room.

"Yeah we do everything together. We've been together everyday since we were five."

"That's a long time" the older woman said as they both sat down to breakfast. "You have to cherish that friendship!"

"Oh I do!" Hanna exclaimed with a smile.

"How was you're walk with Quintus last night?" her mom asked curiously as the boys came into the room.

"You mean the bald guy?" Marius said, outspoken as ever, making Hanna laugh a little.

"Yes Marius, but if you've noticed, dad is bald too. But it was fine."

"Hey I had to try and make a joke here" he said as Evo laughed next to him.

"Boys that's enough" Livia said as she looked over at Hanna. "Whom you're sister likes is not a joke."

"It's fine mom" Hanna said as she quickly finished off her breakfast, wiping her mouth delicately before getting up and kissing her mom and siblings.

"Thank you for making me feel so welcome."

"You're welcome dear" Livia said. "It's nice to have another girl around the house."

Hanna smiled happily. "It's nice to have a mom again" she said waving as she walked out the door.

"Hanna I'm telling you! This is the man I have been praying would rescue me since we were ten!"

Maya had seen a miracle that morning on the beach. A man told Simon to put out his nets into the water even though he hadn't caught anything all night and he came up with enough fish to fill two boats. One of them even sank. Matthew was unsure of what he had seen, but Maya was certain that she knew who this man was.

"Whoa! Maya slow down! Are you telling me this man is the Messiah?!"

"Yes Hanna! I just know it!" Maya exclaimed, sitting down next to her best friend.

Hanna didn't know what to think, but Maya was so sure of what she had seen that she couldn't get it out of her mind.

"Maya are you sure?" Hanna asked as she looked over at the other girl.

"Yeah Hanna. It was the biggest catch I have ever seen. Not even possible."

Both girls sat there stunned for a few minutes before Hanna reached out and took Maya's hand. "You've been praying for this for so long Maya. If what you say is true then pretty soon you may be adopted as well."

"Hanna let's not count our chickens here" Maya said as she looked out the window. "The prophecy says he comes to save everyone. Not just me."

"You are always so selfless" Hanna said softly, turning to face her friend. "Maya you can worry about yourself a little bit."

"I know Hanna. I just don't want to be a distraction for anything good that he does."

"What a silly thing to say Maya. A daughter is not a distraction. She's a gift. And you are one of the best people I know!"

Maya sighed softly and looked over at her best friend. "I sure hope you're right."

"Well I'm glad we're sitting in you're living room because people would think us crazy" Hanna said as the girls fell into a fit of laughter.

Matthew came home that afternoon to find Maya asleep on the couch, the sunlight shining on her dark hair. He smiled and set his bag down, walking over to her softly before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

"Matthew?" she asked drowsily as she opened her eyes, gazing up at him.

"I..I didn't mean to wake you" he said nervously now as she smiled and took his hand.

"Matthew it's okay. I'm glad you're home."

He smiled and kissed her gently as she wrapped her arms around his neck. He pulled away a second later and smiled down at her. "I am sorry I had to run off so quickly this morning" he said apologetically as Maya sat up and yawned into her hand.

"You're okay Matthew" she said, shutting the prayer journal that was in her lap.

"Are you ever going to show me what you write in there?"

"Soon" was her only answer as she got up to fix them dinner, kissing him quickly.

He looked at her curiously as she walked away before getting up to follow her. "I still can't believe what happened today" he said as he stood in the doorway watching her.

Maya hummed a little as she was preparing a salad for them both. She didn't know what she would say to him about the subject. Matthew raised an eyebrow and walked towards her. "Maya are you keeping something from me?" he asked as he came to her side.

"Matthew no" she said, kissing his cheek. "I'm just tired."

"Maya I know you remember."

She sighed and turned to Matthew slowly, wrapping her arms around him. She wouldn't keep secrets from him. Not after what happened with Hanna. She had vowed to never keep secrets from him.

"Okay this is going to sound crazy but..." she took Matthew's hand and led him into the living room, sitting down next to him as she handed him her prayer journal.

"Just read these. I've written them since I was ten."

Matthew looked at her curiously, his eyes widening as he read the prayers, wrapping his arm around her waist.

"W...what does this have to do with today?"

Maya turned to face him a little more, her eyes gazing into his dark ones. "Matthew. I think this man is the Messiah."

"Maya that's impossible" he said shaking his head, but in his mind he was thinking the same thing.

"Could he really be?"

Maya shrugged and leaned into him. "We'll have to wait and see" she said as she closed her eyes.

"Well if he is the Messiah, he has enough food for a lifetime" he teased, kissing Maya's head, making light of the situation.

Maya's eyes popped open at the mention of food. "Ben...where is he?"

She jumped up from the couch, looking for the black shepherd that protected the two of them.

The girl ran into the kitchen just in time to see the dog eating the chicken she had prepared. "Ben! Must you always do this?"

Matthew came up behind her, actually laughing, which was rare for him and despite the situation it was a welcoming sound to Maya who leaned back into him as she started to laugh too.

"I hope you're okay with just vegetables for dinner tonight" she said as she looked up at Matthew. "I'm glad you find it funny!"

It was the first time she had laughed in awhile. And to Matthew it was a welcome sound. He turned her around slowly and kissed her long and slow. Another thing that was out of character for him.

"I think I'm fine with any food you make" he said laughing a little more into her shoulder.

"Well vegetables are all we have thanks to the dog."
