Hanna was walking home when she heard a familiar voice call to her. "Hanna!"
She whirled around and smiled when she saw Quintus standing there outside his office, a grin on his face.
"Now how long have you been standing there?" she asked playfully as she walked up to him.
"Long enough to see you walk by" he teased with a smile, making Hanna laugh.
"Well you have me again so what's up?"
"I just thought we could spend some time together today. I just saw you're brother. He didn't seem to happy with me when we talked."
"Yeah he thinks..."
Quintus noticed her mood change and wrapped an arm around her gently, leading her into his office. "He thinks what?"
Hanna sighed and sat down next to him on the couch. "He thinks part of the reason why I left is you."
"Me?" Quintus looked astonished.
"He thinks...you'll just use me and throw me to the side like many other women."
"Hanna do you believe that?" he asked, hesitantly.
She shook her head and looked up at him, gazing into his eyes. "No. But I also don't want to get into a relationship and get hurt" she said honestly.
"Hanna..." Quintus lifted her chin with his fingers, placing his other hand on her cheek gently.
"I will never hurt you. Ever."
She knew he was telling the truth. "I trust you" she said softly, leaning into his arms, resting her head on his shoulder.
"This is going all so fast" she laughed a bit as she wrapped an arm around his waist.
"Do you want to slow down?" Quintus asked, nuzzling into her hair.
She shook her head and looked back up at him. "No" she said simply.
He smiled at the answer and leaned down to kiss her, pulling her closer to him as he did so. Hanna smiled against his lips, wrapping her arms around him tighter.
"How long have you wanted to do that?" she asked curiously, nuzzling his cheek as she hugged him.
"Awhile now. I hope this doesn't sound creepy but I've been watching you."
Hanna pulled back and raised an eyebrow. "Really? How long."
"A couple months now. You're father is one of my officers so of course I watch him, but you just kept showing up as well. More and more."
She blushed and hid her face in his neck. "Oh my...Quintus."
"What are you embarrassed?" he asked teasingly, tickling her sides a little, making her laugh as she squirmed in his arms.
"N..No!" she laughed happily. She didn't realize Quintus had a goofy side.
"I just probably didn't look good some days. I remember once after I had a cold for about a week, I didn't even dress right. I just dressed comfortably. I looked like a mess."
"I remember that" he said, pushing her hair back a little. "You still looked beautiful."
"That's what daddy said. He had to visit me everyday and just make me stay in bed because I can never be still."
"You're father loves you very much" Quintus said softly, brushing his lips against her forehead as she closed her eyes.
"I know that he would do anything to protect you."
"You got that right" another familiar voice said as Hanna opened her eyes wide.
"Daddy!"
Hanna blushed a little as she and Quintus stood up. Her father was standing in front of her with a raised eyebrow, looking at her protectively.
"Aren't you about to be halfway home right now young lady?" Gaius asked his daughter teasingly as he walked up to her, pulling her into a hug.
"Well I was going to be but this man stopped me" she said, gazing at Quintus playfully.
"Hey I'm just innocent" Quintus joked, holding his hands up, making Hanna laugh.
"Yes well you just keep you're hands where I can see them" Gaius said. "You may be my boss but this is my daughter."
"You have my word Primi" Quintus said teasingly.
"We really do have to go darling" Gaius said to his daughter, kissing her forehead. "Say you're goodbyes."
Hanna smiled and walked over to Quintus, pulling him into a gentle kiss. "Bye" she said softly as he nuzzled her cheek.
"See you soon darling" he whispered to her, letting her dark hair slip through his fingers as she walked back to her dad.
Gaius rolled his eyes and took his daughter's hand, pulling her along. "Come along sweetheart" he said as he led her out the door.
A couple days later, Maya was taking a walk when Matthew came running around the corner in a hurry.
"Maya! Come quick!" he said as he grabbed her hand.
"Matthew what is the rush?" she asked curiously as she ran with him, holding onto his hand tightly.
"The Messiah is here in Capernaum" he said frantically.
"What?" she exclaimed as she ran faster, pulling Matthew behind her now.
There were a million thoughts rushing around in her head. Would he know her? Would he like her? What was he teaching about this time?
Gaius saw the two of them and walked over to them slowly. "Is Hanna here?"
"No she's at home or with Quintus" Maya said to him as Matthew was still not talking about his sister.
"Good" he said before walking away again, his hand at the hilt of his sword, ready to draw it out. He did not want his child anywhere near this.
Maya and Matthew kept walking through the crowd when she heard her name being called.
"Maya up here!" Maya looked up to the roof and smiled.
It was Abigail. A girl she used to baby-sit when she was younger before her father became an alcoholic. Maya had been grateful to the girl for not hating her as others did when he had become one.
"Up here!" she called, motioning to the ladder leading up to the roof.
Maya readily climbed up to the roof, but Matthew was a little slower to follow and just as she took his hand, Simon appeared and boosted him up.
"Simon be gentle" was all Maya said before wrapping an arm around Matthew.
Simon shook his head before turning to Abigail and her friend. "Where are you're parents?"
Abigail smiled and pointed to the crowd.
Simon nodded "Ah...The man you're listening to, he is called..."
"Jesus of Nazareth" Abigail said, making Maya look over at her.
"You know him" she asked now and Abigail smiled and nodded. "He's our friend!"
Maya smiled a little brighter and leaned into Matthew, who kissed her head. He was still nervous about the crowd. Simon examined the older girl curiously. "Maya is it?" he asked curiously.
She nodded simply. "Yes that is me!"
He surprised her and smiled. "I've heard alot about you" he said before walking away.
"Okay that was cryptic" Abigail said. "Maya what did he mean by that?"
Maya's eyes were now wide in wonder. "I don't know..."
What happened next was all a blur, but all Maya could focus on was the man's voice. He was talking to someone who had clearly been paralyzed and said that his sins were forgiven. He then turned and talked to some religous men who were standing in the window. Maya couldn't comprehend any of it, but she knew for certain this was the Messiah.
The man's next words were very clear to her as he was speaking to the paralytic man.
"I say to you my son. Rise. Pick up you're bed and go home."
And within minutes another miracle happened. The paralytic slowly rose and fell into the other man's arms, hugging him and soon everyone was applauding. The man had been healed. Soon Maya was clapping along with everyone else, Matthew watching her as she did so. She seemed truly happy. Happier than she had ever been. Maybe this was the answer to her prayers after all.
But Maya's happiness soon turned to fear as Gaius and his troops drew their swords and came into the crowd after the man. "No..." she whispered.
Matthew saw this and climbed down the ladder first before reaching for Maya who quickly jumped into his arms. He took her hand and raced towards the house.
"Come on. We'll go around the backside of the house" he said racing away from Abigail who had a confused expression on her face.
Once they were in the back it was then that Maya got a good first look at the man who she had been praying for. She prayed he would turn around and suddenly he stopped. He looked at Matthew and then right at Maya before walking towards her slowly, leaving the others stunned. He reached out and took her face in his hands, kissing her forehead. "Soon my little lamb. Soon you're prayers will be answered. And to set the record straight. You are not the least bit selfish for praying all of this."
He then smiled, turned and walked away, leaving Matthew and Maya stunned.
"Hanna!" Gaius called out as he rushed into the house, placing his sword on a chair, looking around frantically for his daughter.
"Daddy what's wrong?" Hanna asked as she raced down the stairs. She was the only one he was worried about since his other family members didn't go out into the streets of Capernaum like she did.
"Oh baby!" he exclaimed, lifting her up and spinning her around as he hugged her tightly.
"What is it?" she asked as her father set her down and pushed her hair away from her face.
"I'm just glad you're safe" he said, hugging her tightly once more, kissing her temple.
"Daddy what has happened?"
He sighed with relief and placed his forehead on her's. "Nothing you need to worry about sweetheart. I'll keep you safe" he said as he hugged her once more, the two of them standing in the hallway for a long time.
