"Maya!" Matthew exclaimed as he walked into the house. Jesus and the other disciples following him. "Come down here I have a surprise for you."

Maya meanwhile, sitting at her desk with her prayer journal heard her beloved's voice and looked up. "A surprise?" she thought as she got up and rushed down the stairs.

"Matthew what kind of..." She stopped when she saw who was standing in the kitchen along with all his followers.

"Uhh..." she didn't know what to say or do. She didn't even know what to call the kind man in front of her.

"Hello Maya" Jesus said simply, reaching out his arms for her to come to him.

She had no other doubts in her mind now as she smiled and rushed forward, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. Jesus laughed and kissed her forehead, pushing some of her hair back away from her face.

"My little lamb" he said softly, looking down at her. "Did you ever doubt that I would come one day?"

Maya shook her head now as she looked up at Jesus. "Not for one second. I never stopped believing."

He smiled and pulled her close once more, turning her to face the others as he introduced her to each one of them. Simon looked at her with hatred, which she didn't understand, but the others looked at her with kindness.

"It's nice to meet you all" she said happily, waving to all of them.

Mary came forward and took her hands gently. "It is so nice to meet you Maya. If you need anything, just let me know. It's nice to have another girl in the group."

After a couple minutes, Jesus turned to Matthew, who was standing next to him looking shy. Just like he was around anyone who wasn't Maya.

"Matthew, you make everyone feel at home. I need to talk to Maya" he said softly, looking down at the girl next to him.

Matthew nodded, looking at Maya who walked forward and kissed him gently as if she knew what was going on in his mind. "You'll be fine" she whispered softly, placing her forehead on his for a second before pulling away. "I'll be back soon."

She walked back to Jesus who took her hand and led her upstairs to her and Matthew's room. She sat down on the bed as he looked around the room, examining everything. She watched him closely as he did so. He came to her prayer journal and picked it up, examining the pages as she sat silently.

Jesus looked over at Maya and set the book back down, walking towards her. He kissed her head and sat down next to her, taking her hands in his.

"Maya...you are to be different than my other followers" he started gently, tilting her head up so he could look her in the eye. "Others call me teacher, Rabbi or Jesus. But you. You can call me Abba"

Happy tears filled Maya's eyes as she hugged him tightly. "I love you Abba" she said softly. The word sounded foreign on her tongue after not saying it for many years.

"I love you too" he whispered, kissing her cheek as he held her tighter. "You are my little girl now and I promise I will never hurt you."

Maya closed her eyes as he rubbed her back gently, her head moving to his chest so she could hear his heartbeat. A part of her still couldn't believe this was real. Jesus gazed down at her lovingly, running a hand through her hair. "This isn't a dream my little lamb. I promise you that this is real."

Maya helped Matthew that night and as they served the food, she couldn't help but feel like she had real family now. Something she had never had and it felt wonderful. She felt true joy for the first time in her life.

Matthew kissed Maya's cheek gently and took some plate of grapes from her. "Why don't you go sit next to your Abba for a bit" he whispered softly and she nodded, kissing him quickly.

And that's when Barnaby spoke up. "You know Matthew when you're not behind iron bars. You're quite handsome! Maya's very lucky!"

Jesus smiled as his daughter sat next to him and wrapped his arm around her as she started to eat a little.

"Yes well he better mind himself" he joked, kissing her temple. "This little girl is precious!"

Everyone except Simon smiled at Maya now as she leaned into her father, smiling.

"What is going on?" A voice called out now and everybody turned to see two Pharisees at the door, making Maya tense up.

Jesus pulled her close as Matthew went and opened the door. "May I help you?"

"We were just on a walk and we heard voices and I thought it sounded like..."

The man stopped midsentence as Jesus and Simon stood up. Maya behind them out of sight, which Matthew was thankful for.

"You" The Pharisee looked astonished that Jesus was even there.

"Would you like to come in?" Jesus asked politely.

"We would never" the Pharisee said. "Never be caught dead in a..."

"In a tax collector's house?" Jesus asked as Maya walked to Matthew's side now, wrapping an arm around him.

"Not only that but do you know what they and he..."

The conversation became a blur after that as Maya hugged Matthew tighter, rubbing his back comfortingly, silently letting him know that it was okay and to not believe anyone's words.

"If you're so offended than leave!" Andrew said, making Maya grateful that he spoke up.

And then Hanna was brought up. "And his sister...and this girl...His sister was adopted by a Roman! She is romantically involved with the Praetor himself."

"Do not speak about my best friend like that!" Maya snapped now. "What she chooses to do with her life is her business!"

"And this girl..." the Pharisee pointed to Maya who shrank back into Matthew's arms as Jesus walked over to her as well. "Her father is an alcoholic and..."

"And that's not her fault!" Mary spoke up as she walked to the door. "You can't control a teenager's circumstances! She has nothing to do with her father's condition. She's been adopted now anyway!"

And that's when Gaius stepped up, making Maya glad that he was there.

"Is everything under control here?" he asked, looking at the men angrily, having heard every word that they had said.

"We were just on our way" the Pharisee said as they both backed up.

"And do not speak of things you do not understand. Hanna is my daughter and I love her. And the Praetor loves her too. And as for Maya, her father has been thrown in jail and she is free to live her life however she pleases as she is eighteen. And if that means she's adopted by a new father then so be it! Now go! And don't let me hear you talk about my child again or you will be placed under arrest is that clear?"

"Yes" they both said as they hurried away as Gaius walked up to the door.

"Y..You all keep eating" Matthew said to his guests before. "I will talk to this man."

Matthew turned and took Maya's face into his hands. "I love you. We will talk later."

Maya smiled tearfully now and nodded, turning into her father's arms as he walked her back to the table. He wiped her eyes as Mary rubbed her back and sat back down.

"It's okay" Jesus said softly, hugging Maya close, knowing that she was shaken a little.

Simon looked a little guilty now as he sat back down as well.

"Maya I am sorry. I did not know the whole situation" he said softly.

"It's okay Simon" she said softly, hugging her father tightly as everybody watched.

Early the next morning, Gaius walked into his daughter's room and sat next to her on the bed, stroking her hair. He would not tell her what was said about her the night before as he knew she was already fragile enough as it was. The day before, she had cried more tears than he had ever seen her cry and he promised her a million times that he didn't hate her and neither would Quintus.

When he had gotten home from Matthew's that night, Hanna had cried herself to sleep in his arms. His red cloak was still around her as she slept. She had been very cold the night before and the cloak had added some extra warmth.

"Daddy?" she murmured softly as she opened her eyes slowly.

"Hey sweetheart" he said softly, leaning down to kiss her forehead as he took her hands in his.

"Listen, I am going to try and work from home today" Gaius said softly as he gazed down at her.

"I do have a meeting with Quintus this morning, but I should be back soon. Don't be surprised if he comes along with me. He cares so much about you sweetheart."

Hanna smiled tiredly and held onto her father's hands. "You're starting to trust him" she said softly.

"I am. I am confident that you will always be safe with him."

She yawned and snuggled back into her father's cloak, gazing up at him sleepily.

Gaius noticed this and ran a hand through her hair before placing it on her cheek. "You get some more sleep honey. We'll both probably be here when you wake up. You're mom will watch out for you too."

"Okay daddy" she said softly, closing her eyes once more.

Gaius kissed her forehead gently before striding out of the room.
