Awhile later Hanna opened her eyes and sat up in bed. She didn't know how long she had slept, but she knew that it was way past noon. She felt odd, but she brushed it off. She rubbed her eyes and looked around a little, spotting a familiar figure staring out her window. "Quintus?"
He turned and rushed over to her, kissing her forehead as he sat down on the bed, pulling her into his arms. "Hanna.."
She burst into another round of sobs as he smoothed her hair down, kissing some of the tears off her cheeks. "Shh...I'm right here. I'm not leaving you ever" he said, taking her face in his hands so he could look her in the eyes.
"Quintus I'm so sorry..." she managed to get out as she placed her hands on his chest.
"It's not you're fault" he reassured her, kissing her softly and gently before laying back on her bed with her back against his chest.
Hanna shivered a little and snuggled into him more, gazing up at him. Quintus smiled and kissed the side of her head and then her lips once more, tilting her head up a little bit.
"Are you cold?" he asked, earning a gentle nod from Hanna who buried her face in his neck.
He pulled her blanket over them both, pressing a few kisses to her cheek, making her smile.
"Now there's that beautiful smile" he whispered, murmuring against her skin.
"You make me smile" she said softly, gazing up at him as she turned in his arms.
"And I aim to do that more and more" he said as he kissed her once more, making her wrap her arms around him tighter. "We should probably talk about yesterday"
He ran his hands up and down her arms gently in an effort to warm her up. She was a little warm to the touch already, but he didn't think anything of it. "Hanna you're brother's actions are not you're own. You're dad told you that and now I am telling you that."
Hanna looked up at Quintus, gazing into his eyes. "I believe that now" she said softly, placing her forehead on his, making him reach up, brushing her hair away from her face.
"Hanna nothing in this world would make me stop loving you."
Her eyes widened now, hearing his words. "You love me?"
Quintus nodded and took her face into his hands. "From the moment I first saw you. My beautiful Hanna."
Happy tears filled her eyes as she kissed him passionately. "I love you too Quintus."
The two just lay there for awhile, just enjoying eachother's prescence. Hanna looked up at him, taking his hand in her's. "Aren't you working today?" she asked curiously.
"Oh I am. I have to issue a decree about this...Jesus of Nazareth man" he said, stroking her hair. "I make my own hours Hanna. You don't need to worry about that."
Hanna kissed his cheek and nodded gently, closing her eyes. Quintus ran a knuckle down her cheek gently, noticing that she was pale and maybe a little hotter than before. "Do you want to come with me? That is if you're feeling up to it."
"Yeah I'll come with you."
Quintus smiled and kissed her gently before sitting both of them up. He got off the bed and turned to her, taking her face in his hands. "I'll wait outside while you brush you're hair" he said, smiling, flipping her hair playfully before walking out the door only to run into Gaius.
"How is she?" Gaius asked him now, crossing his arms.
"She's rested. But she feels warm and she's pale, I said she could come to work with me but honestly I don't know if that's the best idea."
Gaius frowned. "Have you taken her temperature? She's been cold since last night, which is odd because it's so warm. And now you say she's pale?"
Hanna stepped out from her bedroom with just a simple dress on. She looked at her father and Quintus strangely.
"What's wrong? I'm just a little tired. Nothing to worry about."
Why did the two most important men in her life look so worried about her. She felt fine except for a sore throat and chills. But then again that wasn't normal and she knew it. And just then a dizzy spell hit her, making her dad catch her before she hit the ground.
"I'll take her temperature" Gaius said, lifting his daughter into his arms.
"Daddy seriously?"
"I'll get that decree sent out from here. Let me go send for my scribe" Quintus said as well, kissing Hanna's forehead.
"I'm not leaving you darling." he said before rushing off.
"What is all the fuss about?" she asked as Gaius set her down on her bed before grabbing a thermometer.
"You have another cold honey. I don't know how since you just had one a few months ago, but you do."
"Hanna?" Livia asked as she walked in the room concerned about her daughter.
"She has a cold" Gaius said as he placed the thermometer in his daughter's mouth before sitting next to her, feeling her forehead.
"Her resistance is probably down, poor thing and there has been something going around." Livia said concerned.
Hanna leaned against her dad as he took her temperature. "It's 100 degrees. Hanna how did you not feel that?"
"I don't know but now that you say it, I am starting not to feel so well."
"Probably all the adrenaline from everything. Come on let's get you into bed" Gaius said as he pulled the covers down and placed an extra blanket over her as she curled up, taking her dad's hand so he wouldn't leave.
"Quintus and I will take turns watching her Livia. You keep the boys away. I don't want them sick either."
Livia nodded, kissed her daughter's forehead before rushing from the room.
Gaius sat back down and ran a hand through his daughter's hair. "We're not leaving you sweetheart. You heard Quintus. We are not leaving you."
Hanna nodded, feeling suddenly tired as she slipped into sleep, her father at her side. She had been through too much to pretend everything was okay still.
The next morning Maya and Matthew walked through the door of their old house for the last time. Maya had spent the last two nights with her father. They had all agreed that she would spend her nights with him now as it really wasn't proper now that Maya had a father, for her to be sleeping with Matthew every night until they were married, even if nothing was happening. But she had come in the morning to help Matthew pack up their belongings. It was sad to say goodbye to their house, but Maya knew that one day they would have a new house.
"So you don't think we'll ever live there anymore?" she asked him as they walked through the streets.
"We'll find somewhere else Maya" Matthew said softly, wrapping his arm around her as he kissed her head.
He hadn't proposed to her yet, but he knew that Maya was the one he wanted to marry and spend the rest of his life with. She was everything to him and the only thing that kept him calm.
The walked in silence now, just taking in their last moments together that were just the two of them. "Maya about what happened a couple nights ago..." he said softly, turning her to face him once they got to the meeting place. "Do not believe a word that people say about you. You are the kindest, gentlest and most loving person I have ever met."
Maya smiled and kissed him happily, wrapping her arms around his neck. They stood like that for a few moments until the others started to arrive.
"Matthew I agree with what you just said" Jesus said as he arrived, placing his backpack down.
"Abba you weren't even here!" Maya teased playfully as he hugged her tightly, kissing her cheek.
"Ah but I know everything remember?"
He tapped her nose, making her giggle a little. "Yeah I know that now Abba."
Everyone started to arrive just then and Maya felt that familiar warmth of having a family once more.
"That should be everyone!" Thaddeus said as everyone gathered around in a circle.
"Yes everyone is here" Mary said as Jesus looked around, clearly looking for something.
"Anyone else?" Jesus called just as Simon found a purse of money.
"Look at this" he said, picking it up and handing it to Jesus.
It was the most money Maya had ever seen in her life. "Abba do you know who that is from?" she asked as she looked up at him.
"A friend of mine left that for us" he said softly, wrapping an arm around Maya gently, pulling her to him.
"He came so close."
"What do you mean?" Mary asked Jesus who just shook his head.
Just as they were leaving, Simon asked Matthew about his clothes and she raced to his rescue. "His clothes are fine Simon, can we please just go?"
Her tone was polite, but her eyes gazed upon her beloved protectively. Simon sighed and shook his head, walking away from the two. Maya just smiled reassuringly at Matthew and pulled him along, kissing his cheek.
