"Faith are you with me right now?" Eden asked as the two of them kneaded some dough in the kitchen.
The younger girl had been distracted as of late. Her interaction with Gaius had really stuck with her and she hardly knew what she was doing some days.
"I am Eden. I'm right here" she said as she continued with her work.
Eden shook her head and turned to gaze at Faith. "You know what I mean. You have been off in you're own world for about two days now. I feel like you've been gone too. Not just the boys."
Faith sighed and turned to Eden, trying to think of what to say. It was so odd how a Roman soldier could make her feel this way. She didn't even know how Eden would react. Probably better than Simon or Andrew would. Simon would probably have a heart attack.
"Eden..." she finally spoke up, biting her lip a little. "What if I told you that I met my future husband?"
Eden's face went from worried to shocked in about a matter of seconds. "Faith!" she squealed now as she took the girl's hands in her's.
"Who is he? Tell me about him. What's he like?"
Faith looked around for a minute, taking a deep breath. "Eden you should sit down for this."
"Okay now you have me worried again" Eden said teasingly as she sat down in a chair as Faith faced her.
"Eden...It's Gaius" she said now. "Better to get it over with and tell her than to just keep the secret forever.
Her sister-in-law's eyes widened. "What? A Roman? Faith are you crazy?"
"I know Eden. I know..." she said as she sat down next to Eden.
"He's...I don't know how to describe it. He adopted Hanna, so he couldn't be all that bad could he?"
Eden thought for a minute as she watched Faith now. The girl clearly knew what she was getting herself into, otherwise she would be nervous. Not to mention Faith was always a good judge of character.
"Okay. Okay you know him best obviously as does Hanna, so good luck to you" Eden said with a smile. "And especially...good luck telling the boys when they get back."
Faith rolled her eyes. "Yeah we'll just see how that goes."
Faith continued to help Eden out for another hour before she slipped out onto the street. She usually took a walk around the afternoon hours, so she prayed she would catch Gaius again. That is if she could find him. She walked through all the places that Matthew told her he would be and was about to give up hope when she felt a hand take her wrist gently. She turned around quickly, smiling when she looked up at his face as his hand moved into her's.
"Gaius!" she exclaimed smiling.
"Faith" he said gazing down at her. "Looking for something?"
"I uh..." she started to stumble over her words a little. "I was looking for you."
He smiled and pulled her closer, wanting her close, but not wanting to make a move until his divorce was final, which would hopefully be that week. Quintus said he would make the process faster.
"Well look no further" he said smiling, squeezing her hand a bit before letting go. The two stood there for a few minutes before Gaius cleared his throat.
"Fancy another walk?" he asked now and Faith eagerly nodded.
Gaius placed a protective hand on her back as they walked along now and Faith was stumbling on her words a little as she tried to speak.
"H..How is Hanna?" she asked curiously as she looked up at him.
"She's doing fine. She's with Quintus right now going over her letter from Maya with him."
Faith nodded and looked down at her shoes before looking back up at him. "So is it just you and Hanna? Or is there other family members?" She didn't want to get her hopes up.
"I have two sons, but pretty soon it will be just Hanna and I. My wife and I are getting a divorce."
"Gaius I am so sorry" she said sadly as she looked over at him, examining his face.
"You'll still be able to see you're sons right?"
Gaius nodded and looked down, taking her hand once more, not really caring now. He was always throwing caution to the wind.
"Yes. I will be able to. But Hanna I have full custody of."
Faith nodded and looked down at their hands, before looking back up at him curiously.
"Faith I uh...I really like you. I'm drawn to you and I am thankful that my divorce is going through this week because I do have increasing feelings for you. I know it all seems fast but...That's just the Roman way sometimes and I...I want to protect you."
Faith looked up at Gaius now and saw nothing but genuine care in his eyes. She smiled and looked around for a minute, trying to see if no one was watching before placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. "I don't mind Gaius" she said softly.
He smiled and pulled her into a secluded corner, caressing her cheek as she leaned into his hand, gazing up at him.
"Are you sure" he said softly, running that same hand through her soft almost red hair.
"I've never been so sure about anything in my life." He smiled softly and leaned in to kiss her gently on her forehead.
"You will not regret this Faith" he said softly against her skin.
And she knew she would not.
To my best friend,
Hanna I know these past couple of weeks have been hard on both of us when it comes to our friendship, but before I leave Capernaum for a time I wanted you to know how much you mean to me. We've known eachother since we were 5-years-old Han, and that is a strong bond that no one can break. I never expected to get through so many hard times with you from my father's alcoholism to you and Matthew being kicked out of you're house. You met Gaius and I knew that he was the perfect father for you, so I knew that when he adopted you this year that you're dream of being his real daughter had finally come true. And look, you gained a love along with all that and I am so happy for you! I wish you and Quintus only the best as you both move forward in you're relationship and hopefully marriage. I just know he is the soulmate that you have been longing for just as I had longed for Matthew for so many years.
Now Hanna my dream has finally come true. I have been adopted by Jesus of Nazareth and I could not be happier to have the father I have wanted since I was 10-years-old! He is everything to me and more. He takes care of me and he loves me. I could not ask for a better father. Matthew of course is good and is starting to accept that you are finally happy in you're life. Thanks to your's truly and Abba of course. That word still feels foreign to me after not saying it for so many years.
We won't see eachother for awhile Han, but I do not want you to get discouraged about our friendship. We are still the best of friends and we always will be. We are true sisters and I know that God put us together for a reason.
Hanna I ask that you keep you're faith and I ask that you not lose hope about anything difficult that may come you're way. We may be far apart, but we will forever be best friends.
Sisters always!
Maya
Hanna had to wipe her eyes multiple times as she read the letter that she held in her hands for the first time. Quintus held onto her tightly in his lap as they both read the letter that Maya had sent her. He took the letter from his beloved gently and set it on the desk in front of him before pulling her back into him, stroking her hair as she buried her face in his neck.
"I'll miss her" she whispered softly as he kissed her forehead gently, wiping the tears off her cheeks.
"That is some best friend you have there" Quintus said softly, his lips against her skin.
"You're not mad?" she asked gently as she placed her hand on his chest.
"Why would I be mad? Who am I to take a child away from her father? Even if he is this Jesus of Nazareth."
Hanna smiled gently, closing her eyes as she breathed in his comforting scent.
"She called us soulmates" Quintus said softly, placing a gentle hand on Hanna's cheek, lifting her face up to look into his eyes. "I couldn't agree more."
Hanna closed her eyes and leaned into his hand, sighing happily as he ran his smooth thumb over her skin. "I love you Quintus" she whispered softly as he placed his lips on her other cheek.
"I love you too" he murmured softly, placing his arm underneath her legs as he stood up and carried her to the couch bridal style.
He smiled and kissed her, laying down before pulling her against him gently, his arms wrapping around her waist. "You are my greatest treasure" he whispered against her cheek gently as she wrapped her arms around his, tilting her head to the side to look up at him.
"As you are mine" she whispered as he leaned down to kiss her once more, taking her breath away as he did so.
