TW: Vauge mention of suicidal thoughts and eating disorders (I don't know what they were called back then)
Years Later
"My account will be precise" Matthew said as he held onto Maya's hand gently as she sat next to him.
She had been silent the entire time. It has been years since her father had died and she was still heartbroken everyday. He had been the only father she had ever known and she loved him more than life.
She remembered years back when she had first found out about how he was going to die. How she almost stopped living, fell into a deep depression and stopped eating.
She could hear Matthew talking, but the words didn't really register with her. She was just there with him for moral support. They had been married three months before her father had died and she wished now that her daughter could meet her grandfather. Hanna had always been a curious little girl and had always asked why her mother was so sad when her father was brought up. Now a teenager herself, Hanna knew all about her grandfather and wished she could have met him.
Maya knew she shouldn't be sad, but she was. Even though she was surrounded by people who loved her, she felt sad. But she knew it was a sacrifice that had to be made for the world's salvation.
"Maya?" Her husband's voice brought her out of her trance and back to life. She looked at Matthew and John, who still looked worried after all these years. She smiled weakly and got up with her husband, walking outside as she hugged her daughter tightly, who had been with her great grandmother.
Mary came over and placed a hand gently on her granddaughter's arm. "He's not really gone my dear. He's everywhere you and I are. You and he were lucky. You two had a bond no one could break. The bond between a parent and child...It's very special. Believe me I know."
It was starting to rain now as Matthew hugged his family close. They didn't move. They just stood there knowing that this was one of the signs that he would always be with them.
Present Day
Maya sat next to Matthew, leaning against his shoulder now as she waited for her father to come out of their room. He said he had needed a moment. It had been a long moment though and she wondered what he was even doing in there. Just then Simon waltzed in and announced that there were many more people gathering to listen to Jesus.
"I thought some people left" Maya said as she looked at Simon, wondering how long they would be in Samaria.
"Yeah little lamb. They left and now they came back with their family and friends."
Maya and Matthew didn't much like the way he used her nickname then and neither did Mary who gave him a stern look.
"I'll get him some water" Andrew said as he rushed around a little.
Maya looked over at Matthew when he started estimating how many people were in the city, but sighed, burying her face in his chest as she took the calculator he was using away. She could not take anymore math, even if she did love Matthew. "Okay, Okay I'll stop" he murmured into her hair before kissing her head.
Simon looked over at Maya who was snuggled into Matthew's arms now, rolling his eyes. How she stayed sane was beyond him. "Thank you Maya. You just saved us all from a headache."
"Anyway there is a crowd out there and we need to figure out what to do." Simon continued, taking his eyes away from the pair.
"Why don't we just let him decide." Mary said, shrugging a bit.
"I'll tell him" Andrew said as Maya followed him now.
"I'll come with you."
Andrew smiled at Maya. He actually seemed to like her as Simon seemed to hate her. Maya still didn't know why he did, but it hurt her for some reason.
"Don't worry. He'll get used to you" Andrew said as if reading her mind. "He just doesn't understand what you're doing with someone like Matthew."
Maya looked over at him now, a hurt look on her face. "Matthew and Hanna were there for me when no one else was. We've known eachother since childhood. I've loved him for forever."
"I know Maya, just give Simon some time."
Maya shrugged and took the cup of water walking into her and her father's room. "Abba?"
Andrew frowned and looked around before running out the door. "Rabbi?"
Maya ran after him, fear coursing through her. This always seemed to be happening as of late and she like the others always feared for her father's safety.
"He's gone" Andrew said as Maya followed him, a scared look on her face.
Mary quickly walked to the girl and wrapped an arm around her.
"You mean we lost him? How can his own daughter lose him let alone one of us?" Simon exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Simon stop it" Mary snapped. "None of us are responsible for this."
"Well we need to find him" Andrew said urgently, shooting Maya an apologetic look.
Simon quickly barked out instructions and turned to leave as Matthew stood up and walked next to Maya, who hadn't gotten any instructions at all. "What about us?" he asked.
"You and Maya stay here in case he comes back."
"He's my father!" Maya barked at Simon now, anger flashing in her eyes as Mary hugged her, trying to quiet her down. "I should be looking for him too!"
"Yeah and he would be mad if we lost his precious little girl as well, so stay here!" Simon snapped, turning and walking away. It was clear that he detested Maya and had from the start and didn't understand why Jesus adopted her.
Maya's eyes filled with tears as Mary hugged her tighter, stroking her hair. "He didn't mean it" she murmured.
"Yeah well I think he did" she said shakily, looking over at Matthew who had started rubbing her back. "He hates me.."
"You watch out for her Matthew. I will be back soon and I won't be far" Mary said as Maya fell into Matthew's arms, crying into his shoulder.
"Staying here gives us the most chance of finding him first" he whispered to her softly after Mary was gone.
Maya sniffled and laughed a little as Matthew kissed her gently, wiping away her tears. "Well that makes me feel a little better."
"It does give us some time alone" Matthew said, placing his forehead on her's gently, making Maya laugh as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Well that is always good" she said, feeling a little better now as they swayed back and forth a little before Matthew picked her up in his arms and sat down on the stairs with her in his lap.
She could always count on Matthew. Even if Simon and everyone else except for Mary and her father hated her. The two stayed like that for a long time.
