"Alan," came a gentle voice.
He blinked his eyes open to find Ellie smiling softly at him and caressing his bearded cheek.
"Ethan is going to give Maddie her last feed if you want to say goodnight before midnight," Ellie told him.
Alan nodded and stood up from his chair and stretched. "I'm sorry, honey," he said with a hoarse voice.
"Sorry for what?" she asked.
"Falling asleep in a chair like that. I'm an old man, even if we might like to pretend otherwise," he grumbled.
Ellie wrapped her arm around his waist and leaned in to kiss the side of his neck. "You are the age you are. I can hardly stay up till midnight anymore. And even if you are an old man, I still love you and I'm gonna have my way with you later."
Alan grinned at that. "Even if I fall asleep?" he teased.
She scoffed at him. "If you fall asleep while I'm going down on you, we have other problems."
The both of them shared a laugh, and Alan reached down and patted her fondly on the ass before he let her head up the stairs in front of him. He was a gentleman, so ladies first, of course. But also, he did always enjoy the view. He was old, but not too old for that. Alan worried that perhaps the time might come sooner than either of them would want when their love life cooled or got extinguished completely. They were both in good shape, but he was very aware that he was a lot older than she was. And they hadn't even gotten married yet. It was hard to know how many years they'd have together.
Alan knew he was being a little morose, but he couldn't really help it. Something about marking the passage of time always made him feel like this. And it was New Year's Eve, which honestly was somehow worse for Alan than his own birthday for things like this.
They got up to the nursery where Ethan sat in the rocking chair with Maddie as she had her bottle. He smiled at them as they entered. "Look, Maddie. Nana and Grandpa Alan are here to wish you a Happy New Year," he said to his daughter.
"It's your first new year of many, sweet girl," Ellie said, gently touching the dark coiled curls on Maddie's head.
Alan watched the three of them and allowed the ache in his chest to settle there for a moment. He had heard about this sort of thing from people, but he'd never experienced it himself. For his whole life, Alan Grant had been a man of science and lonely more often than not. He'd accepted that. He had never really worked too hard to find love or family. He'd always assumed those things were not for him. He had the dinosaur bones, and that was enough. He really had thought that was enough. But seeing the woman he loved and the young man he'd come to think of as a son and the granddaughter who had captured his whole heart, Alan knew now that he did have a family. He had a family and they meant more to him than he'd ever imagined anything ever could. Sometimes, like now, if he let it, the overwhelming love he had for all of them caused him to hurt. He'd known in the past that love could be painful, but he hadn't known before now that there could be a good kind of hurt like this.
Maddie finished her bottle and Ethan stood up with her. "Here, let me," Alan offered.
Ethan handed the baby off to Alan, and he put the cloth on his shoulder so he could pat her back and burp her. She'd thrown up on him many times in her five weeks of life, but he'd gotten the hang of this by now.
Ellie came over to kiss Maddie's pudgy little cheek. "Night, night," she murmured before turning to Ethan. "Come help me clean everything up downstairs, and then we can all go to bed."
"You don't want to watch the ball drop in Times Square?" Ethan asked.
She glanced at her watch. "We've got about twenty minutes till then. I guess we could…"
"I'll take care of her and meet you guys down there," Alan said. He could be awake for twenty more minutes. Actually, he would be awake for longer than that if Ellie's flirtatious teasing was anything to go by.
Alan was left alone with Maddie as he paced around the nursery. "Who would have ever thought I'd be happily alone with a baby?" he mused aloud. "I guess it's different when it's you, Maddie. You're the best baby in the world, you know that?"
She gurgled in response, and he chuckled.
"You know, this time last year, I had no idea what was going to happen. I thought me and your nana would move to this house and start planning our wedding. I thought I'd settle into retirement and figure out something to do. A hobby or something. I thought it was just going to be Nana and me. Needless to say, you and your dad being here was a bit of a surprise. But it's been the best thing in the world. And now I can look forward to next year and know that you and I will probably be right here again. Though you'll hopefully be sleeping through the night next year," he said.
Alan felt Maddie's head start to droop against his shoulder, so he shifted her in his arms. She was still awake, but her eyes were definitely getting heavy.
"Since I've got you here, I think we should have a conversation about your crying." Alan knew the baby had absolutely no understanding of anything he was saying, but that wasn't really going to stop him. He explained, "You don't know this yet and I hope you never do, but there's a certain kind of scream you do when you cry sometimes that sounds a little too much like a velociraptor. I know you're not trying to scare the hell out of me and Nana, but it's very upsetting. The both of us still have nightmares sometimes. I don't think she knows I know, but I do. I remember what it was like all those years ago when the nightmares first started. It doesn't happen often, but it's been more than once since you've been born, sweetheart. So if you could try not to make that noise, we'd appreciate it."
By this time, Maddie had actually fallen asleep, so Alan's request fell on deaf ears. He sighed to himself and kissed her tiny little nose before putting her back in the bassinet. He took a moment to just look at her and marvel at this tiny, perfect little thing.
"Happy New Year, Maddie," he whispered. And with that, Alan turned out the light and closed the door behind him.
He found Ellie and Ethan both on the couch watching Ryan Seacrest and some band that Alan didn't know.
"We've got five minutes, babe, if you want to get some champagne," Ellie said.
Alan didn't even sit down, he just went right to his wine cellar and found a serviceable bottle to open. He popped the cork in the cellar so the sound wouldn't wake the baby. He poured three glasses, taking the first two out to Ellie and Ethan. "Here we go."
"Where's yours?" Ellie asked.
"I'll get it, honey," he assured her. It was a quick trip back to the cellar for his glass and the bottle.
When he returned, Ellie was standing to propose a toast. "Alright, quick, before the countdown, I want to thank two of the three best men in the world for being here with me, and wish everyone in this house a happy and healthy year ahead."
"I'll text Charlie and tell him he's missing. Or did you mean Ian as the other best man in the world?" Ethan teased.
Ellie rolled her eyes. "Ian probably makes the top five."
"Then who's the fourth?" Ethan pressed.
"Hey, leave your mother alone and drink your champagne," Alan scolded. They all laughed and clinked glasses.
Alan sat down in his armchair as the big ball started to drop. Ellie came to curl herself up in his lap. She had her champagne in one hand and the other at the back of his neck, playing with his hair. He had his champagne in one hand and the other resting on her thigh.
"Five…four…three…two…one…Happy New Year!" they all cried.
Ellie turned to kiss Alan squarely on the mouth before they both pulled back to finish off the champagne in their glasses. Ethan poured them all another glass and they all watched the last of the television coverage in New York. Ethan explained who all of the celebrities were that Alan had never heard of. Though it was hard to pay attention to Ethan when Ellie kept readjusting herself on Alan's lap. He had thought it was innocent at first until her hand slipped down to his inner thigh. Thankfully her body shielded that from Ethan's view.
"Stop it," he muttered.
She just winked at him. She did not stop. Though they'd had cocktails earlier, wine with dinner, and now champagne. Alan should have known this was coming. He knew how Ellie could get with more than the usual amount of alcohol in her system. And wasn't he lucky to be the object of her frisky mood?
"I'm starting to fade, guys. Probably time for the old man to go to bed. You two can keep having fun if you want," he said, tapping Ellie's hip to have her get off him. Thankfully she'd not gone so far as to make it awkward for him to get up right now.
The look on her face when he suggested he go to bed without her, however, was comical. "No, I'll come with you," she said firmly.
Ethan wasn't stupid, and he didn't let that go by. "Jeez, guys," he grumbled.
"Goodnight, Ethan," Alan said. "Happy New Year."
He took Ellie's hand and pulled her with him to go upstairs. She giggled the whole way.
"Honey, I think you're a little drunk," he said when they closed the door to their bedroom behind them.
"Not really. I'm mostly just happy. I'm happy and I want to make love to the man I love. Is that so wrong?" she countered.
He smiled. "Not at all."
Ellie started kissing him, and Alan eagerly kissed her back. Her tongue surged into his mouth and he grabbed great handfuls of her ass as she started undoing the buttons of his shirt. Funny how at a moment like this, he didn't feel as much like the old man he knew he was. Long gone was tired old Grandpa Alan falling asleep in his chair. But that was the thing about Ellie. She made him feel young and vital, in spite of his years. She wasn't as young as she used to be, but she was still youthful in her enthusiasm, and it was infectious.
They shuffled over to the bed, and Ellie pushed Alan down. He grabbed her hips to pull her between his legs, but before he could bring her onto the bed with him, she grabbed the hem of her top and pulled it over her head and tossed it aside. Alan slid his hands up her body to her back and unhooked her bra. She was wearing the blue lace one he liked, but he would admire it another time. Alan was focused on the fact that her gorgeous breasts were right at his eye level when he sat on the end of the bed like this. He wasted no time dragging his mouth over her chest and teasing her with his tongue and teeth, sucking marks into her flesh that made her gasp and moan in appreciation.
After a little while, Ellie wiggled out of his grasp. She took off her pants, and he just sat there and stared at her as she was quickly naked.
"Alan, take your pants off," she instructed.
He stood up and followed her instructions. She watched him with a hungry grin for a moment before walking past him to pull the covers down on the bed.
"It's too damn cold to not get into bed," she said.
Alan couldn't help but smirk, "I'll warm you up."
She laughed, "I know you will. But in bed, please. I'm planning on us both passing out, and I don't want us freezing to death."
He got into bed on his side, and she got in on her side, and they immediately came together, kissing deeply and caressing skin. Alan was already pretty worked up, but this was certainly going to get him ready for her. And Ellie, god love her, hooked her leg around Alan's waist and pushed him over so he was on his back. She straddled his lap. Neither of them were quite ready to go just yet, but Ellie had a plan. She always had a plan.
Alan watched in awe as she perched on top of him in all her glory. Jesus Christ, her body was incredible. How was it that after almost thirty years and two kids, she looked almost exactly the same? Sure, her skin wasn't as taut as before, maybe there was a little flab on her, but none of that made any difference. She was perfect. Perfect and gorgeous and sexy as hell.
And then she started to move. She started sliding herself over his half-hard cock. The heat of her and the beginnings of wetness made him groan with want. She leaned in and kissed him again. Alan grabbed her ass and massaged her flesh and helped her move over him. He was definitely hard now, and she was using him for her pleasure. There was a little jerk of her hips and a small hitch in her breath that let him know she was getting exactly what she needed.
"God, Alan, I need you," she moaned against his mouth.
"Ellie," he gasped in response.
She sat up onto her knees and held his erection in her hand to position herself. They both moaned as she sank down and he filled her. She shifted her hips, testing her movements, and then she rose up and started riding him in earnest.
Alan met her every thrust, his hands going everywhere on her body he could reach. He was close before he knew it, and he wanted her to come with him. He started to touch her, moving with her and following the guidance of the soft, needy noises she made.
Ellie leaned forward to change the angle, and Alan braced his feet on the bed to thrust up. They both moved faster and panted and moaned. Ellie let out a little whimper and then a gasp, and Alan could feel the way her body constricted around him. His belly tightened and he gave a couple last powerful thrusts to finish inside her with a groan of absolute pleasure.
They both collapsed, and Ellie rolled off him to the side. Alan held her in his arms as they both tried to get their breathing under control.
"That was incredible," he said between gasps of air.
"You're incredible," she answered breathlessly. "Every single time."
"Yeah, you keep me around for my body, I know," he teased.
She laughed and snuggled against him, kissing his chest. "Among other things, yes."
Alan stroked her hair and felt the exhaustion start to overtake him. Ellie had said they were going to pass out, and she wasn't wrong. As his eyelids fell closed, he said, "Happy New Year, Ellie."
"Happy New Year, Alan," she answered. "I love you."
He hummed in agreement and drifted to unconsciousness.
