A/N #1: First of all, before starting this chapter, I want to apologize to the readers of this fic. It's been two months after I last posted a chapter. Been trying my best to write the final chapters of Part 2A but life and university got in the way. I'm really sorry. Without further ado, enjoy the new chapter!

TRIGGER WARNING: mention of death, implied abuse

On the next day at Midtown High School, Kaine and Peter sat on a wooden bench near the basketball field, holding their respective biology textbook. They had arrived early in the morning and classes hadn't started yet, so they decided to stay outside and enjoy the cool morning air and the beautiful morning sky as the two reread the materials for today's test. Kaine skimmed the pages as he listened to songs through his earphones. His eyes would widen and he would sigh when he came across something confusing and had to read it again. While Peter read through each page slowly and carefully to digest each piece of information.

"Ah fuck it. I give up. My mind's gonna blow up anytime soon!" Kaine cursed as he closed the book and put it away. He turned off the song, unplugged his earphones, and put them in his pocket. Peter simply laughed at his cousin. "What?-"

Peter shook his head and giggled. "Nothing, nothing," he replied and closed his book too. "Alright, I think I'm gonna continue this later. How are you doing so far, Coz?"

"Not good. There are some parts I still don't understand," Kaine groaned and let out a sigh, "I bet you understand them."

"Well..." Peter smiled sheepishly.

"I knew it. Well, I'm dead."

Peter chuckled and pat Kaine's shoulder gently "Come on. We have plenty of time to study the materials again," he reassured him, "I'll help you understand the parts you're confused with. Okay?"

"Okay," Kaine replied with a smile, "Thanks, Pete."

"Don't mention it, Coz."

Then, the Parkers just looked around the basketball field, humming together and tapping their knees. Birds were flying here and there, accompanying the cousins with their chirping.

"Uh... So, what are we going to do now, Pete?"

"To be honest, I have no idea... Maybe we just wait until we have a few minutes left before class starts?"

"Maybe, maybe." Moments later, he remembered something from yesterday. "You know what? How about if we ask Cat on how we're going to find an alternative lead? Since we're doing nothing here."

Peter looked at Kaine with uncertainty in his eyes. "Is she active at this time of hour though? I don't want to bother her."

"I...don't know," he shrugged, "But we can just send a message. She'll reply to us when she can. I mean, she said we could talk about it today?"

"Alrighty then. If you say so."

They pulled out their smartphones from their jeans' pocket and opened the secure group chat, typing a message.

Hi, Cat! You up? Are you busy atm? We don't mean to disturb you- (Peter)

Same here. Anyway, about yesterday, you said we could think of what to do to resolve our problem, right? (Kaine)

Hi. Nope. I'm not busy atm. Was done with my morning jog. And yup, why? (Felicia)

Awesome. Okay so. I suppose we are gonna hunt for info that can give us an alternative lead today. That is if you're free later..? (P)

Mhm. What about you two? (F)

I am (K)

Me too. Uh, do you have any suggestions for our approach in the next mission? (P)

That's good. Well, we can split up like yesterday and scour throughout the city. But instead of Scarlet, and you and me, the three of us do our own thing to cover more ground. Find someone working for the Kingpin and interrogate them for a location with any means necessary. Report your findings too. If one of us succeeds, then share your location to here so we can regroup. What do you two think of it? (F)

Kaine turned to Peter with a look of concern on his face. The thought of not having someone watching his cousin's back worried him. However, Peter knew what Kaine was thinking about and smiled at him.

"Hey, hey. No worries, Coz. I'll be alright, okay? I can take care of myself. Thanks for the concern though. I appreciate it," he said in a reassuring tone.

"You sure?" Kaine asked, which earned a nod from Peter, "Alright then..." He then typed a reply.

I'm okay with your suggestion, Cat. Hbu, Webs? (K)

I'm also okay with it (P)

Alrighty, that's awesome (F)

Wait, wait. How exactly is each of us gonna scour throughout the city and find our target? Don't we need something that can help us in the hunt? At least we can get a direction and it'll simplify the process (K)

I think there might be a police scanner app on the app store? (P)

There is. With it, we can listen to various police radio frequencies. Thanks for bringing that up, Scarlet. I didn't think about it. Man, things would've been harder if you didn't bring it up lmao (F)

Pfft XD (P)

Okay, problem solved. When are we doing it? In the evening? (K)

Sure. Maybe somewhere between 6 and 7 PM. The dark sky can be used to our advantage. I'll share my location to you all so you can meet me (F)

Okie dokie. Noted. That's all then? (P)

For now. If there's more, let's talk about it when we're all free. I gotta do something after this (F)

Alright. So, au revoir? (P)

Pfft. Au revoir. Cya later, webheads (F)

Ttyl, Cat (K)

After the chat, the Parkers shoved their phones back into their pockets and looked at each other. Kaine sighed softly as he tapped his knees, "Let's hope it won't be another failure. We have to be one step ahead of the bad guys. Otherwise..."

Peter placed his hand on his cousin's shoulder and nodded. "We will beat them, Coz. We will. Trust me," he said to Kaine, which earned a smile from him.

Then, they heard the sound of footsteps approaching them. They turned their attention to Annabelle, who had a bandage on her cheek. Upon seeing it, both stood up from the bench. Peter looked worried and confused while Kaine had an awkward and tenseful expression on his face. The cousins walked to her.

"Ann, what happened to your cheek?" Peter asked in a concerned tone.

Kaine could only clear his throat and ask, "What...happened?"

"Eh, I almost got robbed last night after buying groceries. One guy cut my cheek with a knife. But Scarlet Spider saved me so no biggie," she let out a chuckle, "I'll recover."

A wave of relief washed off Peter's worry because she got home safe, but not for Kaine. It was a big problem. He saw what those thugs did to her with his own eyes. Also, Anna not knowing who he really was and why someone hurting her was personal to him. He hadn't been thinking of when he was going to tell her the truth because of the missions. He had guilt painted all over his face.

"I... I'm glad you were safe," Kaine uttered the only words he could think of as he looked at Annabelle in her eyes.

She replied with a slight smile. But the way she looked at her close friend was filled with disappointment and knowing. As the expression on Kaine's face fueled her suspicions more.

Meanwhile, Peter glanced back and forth between the two as silence filled the place. When he stopped on Annabelle, he began observing her carefully. Moments later, it sank into him that she might've started to figure out who Kaine was and possibly, him too.

"Well, how about we study for today's test? We have some time to kill before class starts," she suggested.

"Sure. We were just studying a bit earlier," Kaine replied, "Might as well continue it."

Afterwards, the three friends walked to the bench, sat down, and picked their textbooks to study. But Kaine's mind wasn't on the book. He turned to Anna, realizing he must tell her soon. Perhaps tomorrow since she would go to her music class after school and he would do the mission with Peter and Black Cat. He couldn't afford to delay it anymore.

*

(Hours later...)

In the evening, the trio sat down on the rooftop's floor. They had their phones in their hand, having installed a police scanner app a few hours earlier. They listened to one radio frequency carefully and changed it into another when the needed piece of information hadn't been found yet.

"Anything?" Black Cat asked the Spider-Men.

"Nothing," Spider-Man answered.

"No. Nothing so far for me," Scarlet Spider said.

She nodded. "Okay. Keep on looking, don't give up just yet."

Minutes went by and they hadn't found anything. Scarlet pulled away the phone from his face and sighed, looking around aimlessly. He turned his eyes at Cat and began to recall how they met. From strangers who didn't trust each other to partners in just a few days. Thinking about it made him chuckle softly. But it soon faded when he remembered what he did to her and lowered his head, wishing he didn't do it in the first place.

"My, my. What a change, huh?" The Other suddenly speaking to Kaine startled him that his phone almost slipped from his hand. Luckily, Kaine managed to catch the phone. It earned a confused look from Black Cat when she saw it but she brushed it off.

"What are you talking about?" Kaine hissed to his darker self.

"Oh, don't play dumb with me. You already know," the Other replied, "A guy who didn't trust a stranger, now does!"

"So what? She's proven to be trustworthy."

"Is she though? Come on. You don't even know about her and what she thinks." What he said made Kaine pause and remember that he still didn't know much about Black Cat. "You and her share the same goal. She may be a good teammate. But the question is... Is she trustworthy till the end of this?" The Other proceeded to laugh tauntingly.

Kaine scoffed at what the Other told him. "Yeah, I'm not falling for your words anymore. Good luck with what you're gonna do."

"We'll see, Kaine. We'll see..." the Other said before he went quiet.

His other personality was right about him not knowing much about Cat however. She had promised to answer his question when he first met her but it hadn't been fulfilled. And what was the meaning of "the Cat's back from the dead through his daughter" that Shocker said yesterday?

So, Scarlet Spider called her. "Cat? Can I ask you something?"

She stopped with what she was doing and turned to Scarlet. "Sure, what is it?"

"It's...about you."

"Why?" she raised her eyebrow in curiosity.

"Well, something just came into my mind, Cat," he began to explain, "It's nice to have someone I can trust. But I- We don't know much about you. You're a walking question mark. You promised to answer my question about how you know the criminals. No ordinary girl knows about the criminal underworld. And what did Shocker mean by "the Cat's back from the dead through his daughter"? I just don't get it. So... Who are you really?"

"I..." Black Cat didn't say much and averted her eyes from Scarlet, biting her bottom lip. She was unsure if she wanted to reveal more about herself to her allies, whom she didn't know much about neither. Then, she looked at Spider-Man.

He simply nodded in encouragement at Black Cat. "Hey... It's okay," he assured her, "You can tell us. But if you don't want to, I understand. I'm not forcing you to."

That reminded Felicia of her mom's suggestion to try to open up while remaining cautious. So far, Spidey and Scarlet didn't have any intention to harm her nor did they seem want to neither. Also, Spidey encouraged and didn't force her. Felicia took some time to consider and nodded back at Spider-Man.

"Alright. Before becoming Black Cat, I was just an ordinary girl with a normal, good life. My life was fine until..." she hesitated to continue for a moment, "...until Shocker and Tombstone came to my home and killed my dad. That was a year ago."

"Wait, what? Why?" Scarlet asked.

"My dad was a retired thief who wanted to turn away from the life of crime and seek a normal life. He used to partner with Shocker and Tombstone, and all three of them worked for a crime figure known as Kingpin. When he was about to have a war with Hammerhead, another crime figure, Kingpin wanted all hands on deck, including dad," she said.

"So the big boss sent Shocker and Tombstone to recruit him back?" Scarlet wondered.

"Yup. And mom and I weren't away from home at the time. Anyway, they told dad about the war and said Kingpin wanted him back. But of course, he refused. Since the Kingpin expected loyalty and didn't take "no" for an answer, my dad got killed by Shocker..."

"I'm... I'm sorry," Spider-Man sympathized with her while Scarlet Spider remained silent as he processed what she just said.

"It's fine." She gritted her teeth and clenched her fist, "Those fuckers ruined my family's life. So I'm gonna return the favor to them."

Scarlet chuckled when he realized how similar he and Black Cat were. "I know how it felt like to lose a father."

"Because of Kingpin?" Cat asked him.

"No. Because of two carjackers. I... My dad and I didn't get along," he started to recall his past, "He wasn't the best dad. He was a terrible one for hurting someone close to me. So I despised him for years, even if he had changed for the better. But when the carjacker killed my dad, it changed? I wished I could change and fix things. Yet, regret always comes late in the end. And my father's death still haunts me to this day." He let out a weak laugh, "So bizarre, huh..? Hating a parent but missing them at the same time."

Cat and Scarlet looked at each other, realizing how similar they were. "Well... Seems like even superheroes have normal lives too," she said. It earned a chuckle from Scarlet Spider. "I'm sorry for your loss, Scarlet."

"Me too..."

"Cat, if you ever feel alone, remember that you're not the only one. Losing a family member is painful and I understand that. Remember that you have us," Spider-Man told her.

"Thank you, guys. I really appreciate it..." she smiled as if she was surrounded with a sense of security and comfort. "Alright, alright. Let's get back to work. We have a job to do."

Everyone returned their attention to their phones and continued listening to police radio. They remained patient until they caught something in their respective radio frequencies.

"10-30 B. Robbery in Queens County Savings Bank. Over," a police officer reported from Scarlet's police scanner app.

Another one from Spidey's reported in a frantic voice, "10-13. SWAT team under heavy fire! Repeat, under heavy fire. We are trapped! Any nearby units, assistance is needed. Or send back up. Over!"

Then came yet another report from Black Cat's. "10-10 V. Suspicious van driving in a quiet street. Will follow it. Over."

The three looked at the NYPD radio codes and the map on the police scanner app, which showed each frequency's location.

"Looks like that's our cue," Scarlet Spider as he and the others shoved their phones into their pockets and stood up.

"Alright. Remember this: find your target, interrogate them with whatever means necessary, and report. Keep looking through radio frequencies if you haven't found any info. But if you find any lead, share your location so we can meet up and go to the location," Black Cat said. The Spider-Men nodded in understanding.

"Good luck, guys. Oh and before we go," Spider-Man extended his fist, "Fist bump?"

Scarlet and Cat chuckled and bumped their fists with Spidey's.

"Be careful," Scarlet said to his friends.

"You too," Black Cat nodded.

"Take care, you all!" Spider-Man replied.

They nodded at each other and ran to the ledge, leaping off the rooftop. Scarlet Spider and Spider-Men shot their respective web line from their finger tips while Black Cat shot a grappling hook from her wrist grappling gun. They swung from building to building before splitting up and heading toward their own direction.

*

Not long after, Spider-Man landed on a rooftop. He kneeled down on the ledge and observed the firefight down the street. On one side, nine men dressed in 1920s gangster outfit were firing their Tommy guns from their vehicles as cover. Five other men were incapacitated on the ground near their guns. They apparently acted as the defense for the warehouse behind them. The opposite side being a black armored van belonging to the NYPD with the word "S.W.A.T." written on it. A five-man team took cover behind the van and fired back at the gangsters.

"Don't let 'em get through us! Protect the drug stashes!" the leader ordered his men.

"Huh. The bad guys look different than the ones we faced last time. They probably don't work for Kingpin," Spidey thought, "Doesn't matter, I gotta help the SWAT guys fast!"

A buzz from his spider sense interrupted Spider-Man's train of thought, which prompted him to turn his attention to the direction of danger. His eyes widened when he noticed two armed men flanking the SWAT team while the rest gave suppressive fire. So he shot two web lines toward their weapons and yanked them away, confusing the men.

"Hey, what the?!" They looked up, only to be greeted by web pellets coming to their face, which stunned them.

Spider-Man jumped down the ledge with his two fists to knock down the men, before webbing them to the ground. "Two down, seven more to go."

When he turned his eyes to the police officers, the SWAT team leader saw him and gave a grateful nod. "Thank you for the help, Spider-Man! We could've been goners."

"No prob, sir. That's what your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man does!" he replied.

"Hey, web freak!" one of the gangsters shouted, which attracted Spider-Man's attention and caused his spider sense to zing.

"Oh great." He rushed to the van as the gangster fired at him. To his luck, the bullets didn't graze nor wound him. Spidey sighed out of relief and looked at the SWAT team. "Hi, I guess we're gonna be stuck here for a bit," he let out a nervous laugh before trying to regain his composure.

The SWAT team leader began to assess the current situation and the possible options he could think of to even the ground. He then called to his fellow members and Spider-Man. "Alright, everyone. Listen up. We gotta wait for an opening. When they stop firing to reload, throw your flashbangs at them. Then we incapacitate them. No killing," he said, "And Spider-Man, I hope you don't mind handling three of the gangsters? You seem capable of doing that in a short time."

"Of course, I don't mind. Anything to help you all," Spidey replied.

"Thank you," the leader said. "Now. Blue One and Red One, prepare your flashbangs. Throw them at my signal!"

The two nodded and picked said grenades from their armor pocket as everyone waited. Soon, the gangsters stopped firing.

"Do it!" the SWAT leader ordered.

"Roger. Flashbang out!" Blue One and Red One threw their grenades over the van to the gangsters. They all covered their ears as the flashbangs released blinding flashes of light to their enemies.

"Go, go, go!" The team formed a snake formation and exited their cover, proceeding to target their enemies' shoulder or leg to incapacitate them.

As for Spider-Man, he jumped over the van and shot web pellets at two gangsters and their leader to stun them. He then shot three web lines to yank their weapons, before rushing toward the two men, tackling them down, and webbing them to the ground. Afterwards, Spidey tackled the leader down and looked at him in the eyes. "Alright, chuckles. You're gonna tell me everything you know."

"Tell you? Hah!" he scoffed and spat on the ground, "I ain't telling ya anything!"

Spider-Man groaned and shook his head, "I knew you were gonna say that. Gee, you could've just said you wanted the hard way."

"Wait, what-"

Spidey turned to the SWAT leader, "Officer, may I borrow this man for a moment? I need to...have a word with him."

He nodded. "Don't harm him. We need to capture him and the rest of his men."

"I won't harm him, trust me." Spidey then grabbed his collar and performed a super jump from the ground to a nearby rooftop.

The gangster looked down and his eyes widened when he saw the height. He screamed, "Put me down! Put. Me. Down!"

"What's that? You want me to suspend you from the ledge with a web line?"

"No! No! Please, please. I-I'll talk!" the man pleaded.

"Alright. See? You could've made it easier," Spidey laughed and immediately spoke in a serious tone, "Tell me now. Who are you working for?"

"H-Hammerhead."

Upon hearing his answer, Spider-Man let out a disappointed sigh. "Okay. Well, thanks for the info. Hey you know, since you guys are cosplaying Michael Corleone, you might as well go to Comic-Con. Man, this Hammerhead guy has quite the taste in movies," he snorted. The gangster leader shook his head in annoyance.

Spider-Man jumped down and handed the leader to the SWAT team. "He's all yours, officers," he told them.

"Thank you again, Webhead. We appreciate your help," the SWAT leader expressed his team's gratitude.

"You're welcome!" As he turned around and was about to shoot a web line, an officer called to him.

"Wait!"

"Yes? What can I help you with, officer?"

"Uh... This is probably a weird question but... Are we getting replaced?" the police officer asked.

When he heard that, Spider-Man tilted his head in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Well, superheroes are real now. You and Scarlet Spider have been patrolling around the city, saving and protecting people..." he lowered his head, "What does that mean to the police force? And even firefighters and others?"

"No, no, no. You're not replaced," Spider-Man tried to assure the police officer, "Just because superheroes now exist, doesn't mean that you all aren't needed anymore." A soft chuckle escaped his mouth, "Sir, I'm no extraordinary man. I'm not a god, a deity or anything. Just some guy who has a life like every citizen here. And I simply want to help others, that's all. Because that's what I've been taught. But I can't be everywhere. There are some things a superhero might not be able to do. That's why people like you, firefighters, and many others are still needed."

The police officer raised his head and nodded, sighing in relief.

"Well, I gotta get going. Take care!" Spidey waved before shooting a web line and swinging away.

The officer smiled and thought, "World is bizarre nowadays... As if we're in a fictional world. So bizarre it reminds me of that phenomena from years ago... Oh well, back to work!"

*

(Meanwhile...)

"Hi, Cat. Just reporting. So when I helped the SWAT team take down several gangsters, I managed to interrogate the leader. Unfortunately, they were Hammerhead's men," Spider-Man told Black Cat through her earpiece.

"Noted. Thanks for the report. Keep on looking while I do my part."

"Anytime. And will do. Best of luck!"

Then another call came in, prompting Cat to double tap her earpiece's call button. "Hi. What news do you have, Scarlet?"

"Disappointing news. I'm sorry," he sighed, "The robbers I faced were just some amateurs. They're not working for anyone."

Black Cat gritted her teeth and swore under her breath, "Darn..." She then replied to Scarlet Spider, "Okay. Thanks for letting me know. Keep on looking. I'm gonna continue tailing the van."

"You're welcome, Cat. And I wish you good luck," Scarlet Spider said before closing the call.

She turned her attention to the quiet streets below, as she was on a rooftop. The mysterious van was still on its way to whoever knew where. Unfortunately, the police car that followed it lost track of the van. To keep up with the vehicle, Cat jumped from one rooftop to another until it stopped near an abandoned building, with another van already parked.

Black Cat kneeled down and observed the two vans. Three men exited the first van, one of them carrying a black briefcase. While four others were waiting in front of the second van. "So a transaction, huh? Let's see, I count seven so far... Better wait for a bit. Don't wanna jump the gun..." She continued to observe for a few moments to make sure there were just those seven people. And thankfully, no more hostiles seemed to appear.

As the transaction process started, she looked around below for any way of luring one of the men for interrogation. Then, Cat noticed a dark alley which was just next to the building she was on top of. An idea popped up in her mind and she smiled under the mask. Bringing out her gun, she shot a small device into the alley and pulled out her smartphone. Black Cat opened an app and pressed the whistle button, making the device play a whistle sound.

One of the three men glanced at the alley. "The hell? Is someone there?"

"Imma check it," another man from those three walked to the alley and picked a flashlight to shine the way.

"Gotcha," Cat smirked and shot six other small devices at the remaining men.

"What are those-" one of them wondered as he looked at one of the devices. Only for all of the six emitted a sleeping gas, causing the men to fall down to the ground, now asleep.

The man who searched the whistle sound, glanced over his shoulder upon hearing thuds on the ground. "The hell's going on there?!- Oh- Oh no, no, no." His eyes widened in shock when he found the others lying on the ground. Another whistle came, startling him. He turned back to the alley and pulled out his gun. "W-WHO'S THAT? SHOW YOURSELF!" As he stepped closer, he found nothing but the small device. "What's-" It exploded, releasing a blinding flash of light. The man screamed in pain and dropped the gun and the flashlight.

Having just pressed the flashbang button on the app, Black Cat shoved her phone into her pocket and ran toward the ledge, before leaping off to a wall. She extruded her claws from one of her gloves and digged them into the wall's surface to slow down her descent. Seconds later when she stopped, Cat retracted the claws, dropping to the ground. Then she turned on the night vision mode on her goggles and approached her target from behind.

She pointed her gun at his head, causing him to gasp in fear. "On your knees. Don't do anything stupid," Cat ordered him. The man nodded and dropped onto his knees.

"W-What do you want?" he asked.

"I'm gonna ask you questions. If you don't give what I want," she extruded claws from her other glove, "I'll cut you till you bleed a lot. Got it?"

"Okay, okay..."

"Now, who do you work for? Who's your big boss?"

"Kingpin. I work for Kingpin."

"Ah. Finally. Looks like we're onto something good here," she smirked before continuing to ask. "Good. Can you tell me about all important locations related to Kingpin?"

"I... I only know about his warehouses and safehouses. That's all!" the man replied.

"Not good enough. I need their addresses. Tell me," Black Cat pressed him.

"I don't know!"

A sigh escaped her mouth and she rolled her eyes. "Wow. I must be talking to someone really dumb here," she hit the back of his head lightly with the butt of her gun, "Spit it out. Tell me about their addresses before I lose patience! If you don't, I'll make sure to leave deep wounds with my claws."

He groaned in pain and nodded frantically, "Alright, alright! I give! I-If you want to know about the addresses, you can go to my HQ."

"How?" she asked in a stern tone.

The man quickly pulled out his phone, opened a note app, and showed the address of his headquarters. "Here! You'll get what you want there. Please just...don't kill me," he begged to her.

"Well then. Thank you for your cooperation." Black Cat hit his head, causing him to fall unconscious to the ground. She proceeded to bring out her phone and looked at the phone screen belonging to the man, inputting the address into a navigation app she had. Not long after, a location popped up, bringing a smile to her. Cat then shared it along with her current position to the group chat. And of course, a text message popped up.

WHOA. WAIT, WAIT. YOU GOT IT? (Peter)

Black Cat chuckled at Spider-Man's reaction as she typed a reply.

Yup. An address to an enemy headquarters. Now, we have a chance to rectify our failure from yesterday (Felicia)

Oh man, that's awesome (P)

Right then. We'll be on our way to meet up with you (Kaine)

Cya later, guys. Be careful! (F)

Will do, Cat. And thanks. We owe you one (K)

Thanks from me too (P)

You don't need to thank me. I mean, this is a team effort. We've done our best (F)

Still, we couldn't have gotten this far without you (P)

That's sweet of you, Spidey. I appreciate it (F)

Anytime, Cat XD Anyway, we'll see each other again when we meet up. Ttyl! (P)

With the HQ's address now, Black Cat aimed her wrist at a nearby building and shot a grappling hook from her wrist grappling gun toward it. It pulled her upward and she began to swing from building to building. A smile of confidence formed on her face as she was on her way to the headquarters...
