Chapter 32 – Opportunity Knocks Once
Begins during Daphne and Tracy's second year and moves onwards
Dedicated to BlackjaxCXXIII
"What made you do that?" Tracy asked Daphne, eyes wide.
"Do what?" Daphne asked airily as she set her things by her desk in their shared dorm room.
"Say that out in the hallways in front of everyone. You had to know that it would piss a lot of people off."
"I am well aware," Daphne said with a small smile.
"I know that smile, it's a 'I did read good smile'," Tracy observed. "Care to explain?"
"I was just following something my parents say," Daphne said airily.
"Never buy retail if you can buy wholesale?"
"No."
"Blood is important but so is money?"
Daphne sighed. "No, not that one."
"Your parents say a lot of things."
"I know. In this case it is: Opportunity knocks once."
Tracy frowned. "What opportunity did you see?"
"A chance to make Malfoy look the fool and to rub it into the faces of others. You saw how they turned on Potter. By showing that I, someone in the House that most stands against the Gryffindors, do not believe the rumors, it is an insult to the other Houses and even to those in his own House." Her smile was broad. "It was a beautiful opportunity."
"Talking to or about Potter is a fast way to piss off Malfoy.
"And considering what Potter said earlier this year about blood purity, this will continue to make Malfoy look stupid and make everyone else in Slytherin question things."
"Well that makes sense. For a second there I thought you were friends with him and I wanted to know how you got to be friends with him without me knowing."
"I would not call him a friend. I have barely spoken to him." Daphne waved a hand. "He is too different. I doubt we will ever be friends."

"Daphne! Are you okay!"
"I am okay, Tracy," Daphne said. She hugged Tracy tightly however, showing her nerves.
"What happened?!" Tracy listened to Daphne's story of how the hippogriff had attacked Draco and nearly gotten her. "That stupid sodding shite! Imagine insulting a hippogriff to its face! I'm not taking Care and even I know that!"
"He has never been accused of being intelligent," Daphne said bitterly.
Tracy looked at Daphne carefully. "Are you sure you're not friends with Potter?"
"What do you mean?" Daphne asked, wrong-footed.
"Why would he save you if you weren't friends?"
"I asked him that. He said he did not like seeing people hurt."
"Is he playing an angle?"
"I…do not think so. He looked sincere when he said that."
Tracy tapped her chin. "I don't buy it. He must be up to something."
"It is not like he set the situation up," Daphne protested. "He had no idea that would happen and thus rush in playing the hero."
"True." Tracy looked at Daphne thoughtfully. "You're defending him though."
"Please spare me your imagination," Daphne groaned. "He saved me from harm and I believe he was just being a Gryffindor."
"Okay, well, still. Bit weird for one of them to help one of us."
"You are not wrong. Still, having actually seen him do something and talk to him in person, perhaps he is a bit different from what people say."
Tracy looked at her again. "You'd tell me if you two were friends, right?"
"Yes, Tracy, I would."

Daphne sighed and rubbed her eyes. "Tracy, please."
"You lied to me," Tracy said mulishly.
"I did not and please face me. It is difficult talking to a lump."
Tracy burrowed deeper into her bed and dragged her pillows over herself. "Tough. You liar."
Daphne sat beside her on the bed. "I did not lie to you. I was not friends with Harry before."
"You even call him Harry! You let him call you Daphne! It took you a long time before you did that with me and we grew up together!"
"Do not kick me!" Daphne irritably slapped what she assumed was Tracy's leg. "He saved me from considerable harm! I suppose I allowed him the liberty since he did protect me. If anything, I should wonder why you talked to him without me!"
"I was thanking him for saving you! Which I don't know why I bothered considering you're a lying bitch!"
Daphne hissed in vexation. "Tracy, stop it." She reached into the covers and shrieked when Tracy pinched her. "Stop it!" She yanked them off and the two wrestled for a moment before Daphne was lying on top and her arms around Tracy's. "Are you going to calm down and listen?!"
"You've gained weight!" Tracy spat.
"That is rude! Tracy, Harry and I do not have some secret friendship going on and even if we did, which we do not, why are you so upset?!"
"Because you didn't tell me! Or…include me." All the fight left Tracy's body and she laid there limply.
"Oh Tracy, you are my best and closest friend." Daphne let her go and rolled off of her, sitting beside her. "I would never not include you on things."
"I guess I got scared you were making friends without me," Tracy muttered into the mattress.
"I barely do anything without you," Daphne said.
"That's good." Tracy relaxed more when Daphne rubbed her back softly. "I'm sorry that you've gained weight."
Daphne scowled. "You are supposed to say that you were sorry for insinuating that I did."
"But then I'd be the liar." Tracy giggled when Daphne walloped her with her pillow. "You know, he's not that bad," she said when Daphne finished.
"No, he is not." Daphne laid the pillow across her lap. "He is quite the surprise."
Tracy crawled and rested her head on the pillow, looking up at Daphne. "I guess you can be friends with him, if you want to."
"We can," Daphne corrected gently.
"Yeah, that might not be too bad," Tracy agreed.

"I still can't believe he made these for us," Tracy said as she ate another biscuit. "They are seriously good."
"Almost as good as Shelly and Nelly make at home," Daphne agreed, munching on her own. "And interesting choices in runes as well."
"What do you think he meant by what he said about cooking though?" Tracy asked. "It sounded kinda weird."
"I agree," Daphne frowned. "Especially when you consider what he said earlier this year about the team being his first family. I thought he was raised with blood relations."
"Well, maybe he's not very close or warm with them. We know loads of people like that," Tracy said uneasily.
"True. Perhaps we will learn one day." Daphne said thoughtfully.
"I'm glad we are getting friendlier with him," Tracy said happily as she bit into a meat pie.
"Same. He is much nicer and better than what others say of him." She gave a giggling Tracy a look. "Why are you giggling?"
"Well it's our fault I guess. We should know better than to listen to Malfoy."
Daphne giggled too. "Very true."

Daphne sat on the bed and poked Tracy. "Out with it."
"Out with what? Also leave me alone." Tracy tried to push Daphne off the bed with her foot.
"I will not. You are in one of your moods and it wearies me so I want to get to the bottom of it."
"If I 'weary' you, then you can just go away and leave me alone!"
Daphne slapped her foot. "You do not, your mood does. Hey! Do not kick me!"
"Or else what, you going to squish me again under your fat?!"
"Okay, you are upset at me for some reason. You call me fat when you are. Tracy, please, just tell me."
Tracy looked away. "You've been spending a lot of time with the Frenchies. The three beautiful ones specifically."
"Only because I speak French."
"You don't hang out with the other Frenchies."
"Well because they want to be friends with Harry and now that we are friends with Harry, I wanted to help." She rolled her eyes. "Jealously does not suit you, Tracy."
"I'm not jealous," Tracy said jealously.
"Yes you are. I know you. You keep giving them looks too. If you wish to be friends with them…I would help you."
Something in Daphne's voice made Tracy look up. She saw something different with Daphne's expression. A hint of nervousness, irritation which was a normal Daphne expression, and something else. "I don't necessarily want to be friends with them. Just saying you're spending time with them, like a lot."
"Only when Harry is involved."
"You've been getting really close with Harry too."
"Tracy, for mercy's sake, we have gone over this. We are becoming friends with him. We both are. I actually like Harry as a person, as do you I might add."
"I know you like Harry," Tracy said, looking away again. "You actually played Quidditch with him."
"And you! I played because it was him AND you."
"Oh." Tracy chewed on her pillow.
"Do not do that," Daphne chided her gently. "Tracy, we have gone over this. You are my best friend and I am never replacing you. For anything."
"I know," Tracy said in an uncharacteristically shy voice. "I can't help but think it sometimes and worry." She looked at Daphne again. "Wait, why did you give me that look when you mentioned me being friends with the Frenchies?"
"I was wondering if you wanted to be friends with them or if you wanted to be…friends with one of them."
Tracy's heart stopped. "Uh…well…depends on what kind of friends you mean."
Daphne's cheeks became red and she looked elsewhere. "I think you know what kind of friends I am alluding to."
Tracy looked away as well, face equally red. "I might. The answer is no by the way. I mean, I guess it wouldn't be bad to be friendly with them but not the other kind of friends with any of them."
Daphne tried to hide her relief. "That is good." She coughed. "I agree with you. They are nice enough people to be friendly with and perhaps the first kind of friends but not the other kind."
Tracy's head snapped up. "Wait, what?"
"If you make me say it outright, I will die by embarrassment," Daphne said, still looking away.
"I…I thought you…liked Harry like that," Tracy whispered.
"Oh! No! I mean, he is very nice and I am glad we are friends but not that kind…of…friends."
"How did you know?" Tracy asked in a near silent whisper.
"I keep telling you, you are my closest companion and I know much about you," Daphne replied in a whisper almost as silent.
"When you say you wouldn't ever replace me…what kind of friend are you talking about?"
"I hope you have a better idea of what kind now," Daphne said evasively.
They finally looked at each other, soft blue eyes meeting soft brown ones.
"Do you have a date to the Yule Ball yet?" Tracy asked, fearing the answer.
"No." Tracy's heart leapt at Daphne's words. "D-Do you?" Daphne silently cursed at her stammer.
"No." Tracy smiled up at Daphne. "Ask me. Properly."
"Tracy," Daphne whined.
"Do it," Tracy said firmly.
Daphne took a deep breath. "Tracy, would you please accompany me to the Yule Ball as…my date?"
"Yes," Tracy said happily. "I'd love to."
Daphne's smile transformed her face. "Wonderful!"
"Good!"
"Yes, good!"
The silence was awkward and warm.
"Is this why you were upset with me last year when you thought I was friends with Harry without you?" Daphne asked, struck by realization.
Tracy burrowed under her pillows. "No comment."
"You are adorable when you are jealous," Daphne smiled.
"And you're only a little fat," Tracy said, her voice muffled by the pillows. She squealed when Daphne sat on her.

"Hey, I'm sure he'll be okay," Tracy said softly, as if hoping that saying it out loud meant it would be true. It was a few days after Crouch Junior had attacked Harry and Katie. The school was still rife with rumors, all sorts of people wondering what happened truly. Harry was still unconscious in the Medical Ward and no one was allowed to see him
Surprisingly, Snape of all people had told Daphne and Tracy first what happened and had promised to keep them in the loop.
"I hope so," Daphne said quietly. She relaxed a little when Tracy took her hand. In the past, they would not have done this so easily or openly, especially in the Slytherin common room, but things have changed a little. Not to mention Tracy did not care about social customs when she wanted to comfort her 'friend of a different sort'. Few people gave them a second look and most continued to whisper and talk.
"There is one good thing about this, well it is not good but one slightly less terrible thing," Daphne murmured.
"What's that?" Tracy asked.
"Look around, have you ever seen the common room so fractured? The lines so divided?"
"No I haven't." Tracy peeked over and saw Draco sitting with Crabbe and Goyle but no one else. Even Pansy was avoiding him. "Do you know what's going on?"
"To a degree. It was confirmed that it was Bartemious Crouch Junior being the intruder and the one that attacked Harry and Katie." Daphne gulped a little but pushed on. "He somehow came back from the grave apparently. He was sent to Azkaban for a dreadful crime and it has come to light."
"So he obviously broke out before." Tracy shivered. "What does that have to do with anything?"
"Even if it is mere rumor, Harry and Katie stopped him. Crouch Junior is a Death Eater and he was a close friend of the Malfoys and certain other families. Like the Lestranges."
"Isn't the woman Lestrange Malfoy's aunt?" Tracy asked.
Daphne nodded. "Yes. With Harry stopping Crouch Junior, someone with a lot of experience and strength on him, he shows that he is still capable of standing up to the Pureblooded bigots and monsters, the supporters of You-Know-Who."
"And if one of His supporters was crazy enough to storm the school and attack a student," Tracy mused, "that means the old families that weren't 'officially' with Him but enjoyed his principles are looking really bad and suspicious now." Tracy smiled ferally. "And if you take into account what Selwyn did do Malfoy when he was running his mouth, things really are changing."
Daphne's smile was cold and cruel as she remembered how Selwyn held Draco by the throat, with his wand pressed against Draco's nose. "Yes. A lot of Slytherins are especially wary of Harry now. Even if it is not true that he stopped a Death Eater on his own or with Katie, he still survived the attack."
"Which means if he can do that now, what can he do when he gets older and stronger," Tracy said.
"So now people are wondering who is the greater threat: Malfoy and his arrogance, or Harry and his strength." Daphne's smile was tinged with frost as she looked at Draco and Crabbe and Goyle. "And people are already deciding."
"You're right, a bit of a silver lining," Tracy said with relish.

Draco slipped into the common room, hoping that it would be empty at the late hour. He had only just left the Headmaster's office and wanted nothing more than to return to his room. He just walked halfway through the seemingly empty common room when he froze. The sound of a pair of hands clapping slowly filled the room and he groaned when the lights brightened, revealing a lot of people sitting there.
Daphne continued to clap slowly. Her eyes were bright with fire and her smile was sharper than a knife. "Hail the returning champion," she said scathingly. "Look how proudly he slithers back to us."
"Shut up!" Draco shouted. "I will have my revenge and I would think my House would support me when I needed them!"
"You have said for years you need no one," Daphne drawled. She continued to applaud sarcastically. "That you are the epitome of Slytherin. Well, am I glad that you are the face of our House with your stunning display today. Oh wait, you are not. You are the caricature of Slytherin."
"Why did you think that was a good idea, to provoke him and attack him?" Tracy asked in a tone one would take when they spoke to a very small child. "You've failed time and again. What did you think would be different this time?"
"Not only did he hand your arse to you, he healed you after," Daphne crowed. "What a shameful display!"
"You bi-" Draco started to say, grasping for a wand that was not there.
"Careful," Blaise warned. "You already proved you can't stop what you start. And Potter isn't here to heal you up if you continue to be an idiot."
Draco seemed to shrivel at the looks the majority of the House gave him. He gaped at them, looking for a sympathetic eye. He found none. He fled, anything to escape their gazes and judgement.
A few people chuckled at his expression; at the way he ran. They dispersed murmuring between themselves. Blaise nodded at his fellow prefect before he too walked away. Tracy and Daphne went to their shared room and Daphne sat on her bed, scowling.
"Harry won't get into too much trouble, will he?" Tracy asked.
"He should not. It was clear self-defense and Draco the instigator," Daphne said. "He can never catch a break, can he?"
"Doesn't look it." Tracy sat beside her and laid her head on Daphne's shoulder. "We'll support our friend tomorrow though. It's the least we can do for him gifting us Draco's latest humiliation."
"Yes," Daphne said, smiling. She laid her head on Tracy's. "The very least we can do."

Tracy opened her bedroom door and smiled when she saw Daphne. Her smile faded at Daphne's expression. "Hey babe. What's wrong?"
Daphne walked in and fell face forward onto Tracy's bed. "Nothing."
"Seems like something," Tracy said. She sat down on the bed and rubbed Daphne's back. "Parents giving you crap again?"
Daphne grunted in an un-ladylike fashion.
"Is it about us?" Tracy asked softly.
Daphne sniffled.
"Hey, it's okay," Tracy said, trying to sound calm and brave. "We knew they wouldn't be too pleased."
"It shouldn't matter," Daphne grumbled. "We will do everything proper."
"Yeah. Did they tell us to stop seeing each other?"
"No and I would not listen if they did." Daphne rolled onto her back. "Father is…pleased with my other 'actions'. Between the way we have diminished Draco's name and influence at school and the fact that I am 'close friends' with the new peer of the Blacks, he can overlook my other activities."
"I guess that's something," Tracy said with false enthusiasm.
"I am sorry," Daphne said, looking at her girlfriend.
"None of this is your fault and you obviously don't agree with him so don't apologize." She reached out and took Daphne's hand. "We'll get through this."
"We will," Daphne said and kissed Tracy's hand. "What is that smile for?"
"We wouldn't have stood up to your dad before, would we?"
"No, we would not have." Daphne looked thoughtful. "I wonder what changed us."
Tracy thought too. "Say, you don't think…" They looked at each other for a long moment.
"We do watch him continue on despite the odds," Daphne said softly. "And he remains kind and supportive of others no matter what."
"Guess he rubbed off on us," Tracy smiled.
-0-
"Things still bad?" Tracy asked.
Daphne nodded, pensive. "He is still walking about like a broken puppy and she does not look any better."
"Why did you have to say that? That's really sad!"
"It is what he looks like!"
"But you didn't have to describe it like that!"
"That is what you are deriving from this? My poorly chosen simile? Not the fact that he is genuinely upset, as is she?"
"I like puppies…" She squealed when Daphne pinched her. "You're going to meddle right?"
"I am."
"Because you care?"
"Obviously."
"Or is he moping so much it's starting to irritate you?"
"I can meddle for multiple reasons," Daphne said defensively.
-0-
"Hey Daphne? I want to ask you-" Astoria stopped as she opened the dormitory door. She saw her older sister and Tracy stare at each other, the atmosphere crackled with tension. "Never mind, I'll ask you later," Astoria said and closed the door behind her.
"Care to say that again?" Tracy asked, her voice shaking.
"What more is there to say?" Daphne said, her voice deathly still. "You knew that we would have to talk about this at some point."
"We are barely adults," Tracy said. "There's no reason to talk about it now."
"We are adults," Daphne retorted. "We have to talk about it. To justify things."
"Justify what?! What do you mean by that?"
Daphne sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. "You know full well what I mean. We do want to have children together do we not?"
"Yes but not for a while!"
"Then I do not see why you are so upset by this!"
"Because it should be up to us!"
"It is!"
Tracy laughed hoarsely. "Is it?! Or is it his relationship too? Your father's because he seems to be dictating a lot of it!"
"You are being hysterical right now," Daphne said with disgust.
"Your face is hysterical. It shouldn't be up to him. He doesn't have a right to tell us what to do. If you think he does then why are you even with me?!"
"Stop being silly Tracy!"
Tracy looked at her, face paling. "I'll go be silly elsewhere. With another giant spineless tentacled cold-blooded thing!" Tracy ran out of the room, slamming the door shut behind her.
Daphne sat down and her anger dissolved into cold fear. "What have I done?" she moaned.
-0-
"I cannot believe you did this to me!" Daphne yelled, trying to kick herself free from the sticking charm sticking her to the chair.
"And I can't believe you're such a dumb bitch you dumb bitch!"
"Do not call me that in public!" Daphne said again, red faced. She sighed and stopped struggling. "So you heard it all then?"
"Yeah."
The two witches stared at each other for a long time.
"I am sorry," Daphne said shamefully. "You are right. My father does not dictate our relationship. He…no, what he wants is immaterial. It is what you and I want. And I want you."
Tracy tried to keep hold of her indignation. "Yeah? Prove it."
"How do you want me to do that?"
"I don't know, you better figure it out!"
Daphne gaped at her for a long moment before clearing her throat. "From now on, I will be completely open and honest with you about my thoughts and feelings."
"That's a start."
"I will do my best to speak to you when I am bothered instead of jumping to conclusions."
"Better."
"What else do you want?"
"Really? Giving me the advantage?"
"I am stuck here and rather desperate and trying to make amends." Daphne rolled her eyes. "Despite you also being at fault here to a lesser degree. You could have spoken to me truthfully as well, you know."
"This isn't about me, it's about you trying to dump me."
"I did not try to dump you!"
"Mmmhmm," Tracy hummed. "Fine, I'll forgive you if you do three things."
"Name them."
"If you didn't spend your favor, extend it to me. The one you have from Harry."
"Why would I extend it? I mean," she said hurriedly at Tracy's frown, "how would extending a favor from him help?"
"For when we want to have kids."
Daphne turned bright red. "You cannot be serious."
"I am. Can you think of any guy you'd trust?"
"N-no. But he is with Katie!"
"We'll ask her permission. If they both say no, then we ask someone else."
"It will be mortifying to ask them," Daphne moaned.
"I don't hear you refusing though," Tracy smirked.
"Fine, what is your second condition," Daphne huffed, still bright red.
"When Granger hears of it and wants an explanation, you'll provide it."
"You want me to die from embarrassment! You are cruel!"
"Learned from you babe."
"Fine!" Daphne spat. "Your final condition?" Her eyes widened when Tracy locked the door behind them and gave her a smoldering look. "Here? Now?"
"Yup."
Daphne looked at her steadily. "If we can do it in our dorm room I promise it will be twice as good as it could be here."
"Now you negotiate," Tracy laughed. "Fine."
-0-
"I am sorry," Daphne said much later.
"I forgive you," Tracy said breathlessly. She groaned when Daphne moved, displacing her. "Hey, what gives?"
"I feel a need to thank Harry," Daphne said. She rooted around her trunk. "Ah, this will be good as a thank you gift." She held up an unopened bottle of mead.
"Whoa, the expensive stuff?"
"He deserves it. I would be very upset if we broke up over something so silly."
Tracy smiled. "Let's go visit him and give it to him then. And you can fulfill condition one and probably two."

Present day
"Daphne, you okay?"
"Hmm?" Daphne blinked. "Oh, yes. My apologies, I was lost in memory for a few moments."
Harry smiled. "I'll say, what were you thinking about?"
Daphne smiled warmly at him. "I was just thinking about how grateful I am for speaking up for you our second year."
"Really? What brought that thought up?"
"Oh, just feeling grateful for my current life and on reflection, it seemed to have started from there."
"Well, I'm glad too because I don't think I'd be friends with you and Tracy and that'd be a real shame," Harry said sincerely.
"It really would be," Daphne said solemnly. A giant smile grew on her face as Dahlia leaned on her lap. "Hello Dally!"
"Hi Auntie Daffy! Can I ask you a question?"
"Yes you may. How can I help you?" Daphne lifted Dahlia up into her lap.
"Auntie Hermione said that sandwort is the best for revealing solutions but the big book says glasswort is. I tried to look up the difference but it makes me confused."
"You're learning about potions at your age?" Daphne asked, impressed. "Wait, why is Hermione teaching you about potions?"
"Because when she comes to teach, she's Professor Granger."
"And she is teaching you incorrectly?! How dare she! Oh no, I will not have her filling my Dally's head with lies." She glared at Harry. "I will be Dahlia's tutor for potions! Why did you not ask me?!"
"Because it's supposed to be basic things right now and not necessarily magic stuff yet," Harry protested.
"Well as a certified Potions Mistress, I will be taking care of Dahlia's potions needs."
"You'll be Professor Greengrass?!" Dahlia asked excitedly.
"For you I will! Let us tell Professor Granger the good news." She deposited the little girl on the ground and walked off holding her hand.
"You just had to give her more ways to fight Hermione," Tracy sighed.
"First of all, not my fault," Harry chuckled. "Second of all, you love it. I know you egg her on."
"I love watching Daffy fight others," Tracy admitted with a smile. "She gets really riled up and I benefit the most from it." She waggled her eyebrows at Harry.
"Ugh, no, don't say stuff like that," Harry said weakly. "I don't want to know."
"Don't be such a prude, Potter," Tracy snickered.
"What's going on?" Katie asked. "Daphne and Hermione are shouting at each other and Dahlia is looking like she's enjoying the show a bit too much." She tilted her head at a giggling Tracy and an uncomfortable looking Harry. "What's going on here?"
Tracy sat in a chair. "Harry's being a prude because he doesn't want to hear about certain things involving me and Daphne."
"I'm being respectful!" Harry shouted.
Katie winked at him. "So you like hearing about that sort of thing?" she asked Tracy.
"I wouldn't mind salacious details," Tracy said.
"Oh speaking of, Harry, did we clean that chair after last night?"
"Oh…oh dear Merlin," Tracy said and jumped out of the chair, as if her skin was burned. "You didn't."
Katie winked at her. "What do you think?"
"I think I need to go scourgify myself," Tracy said and ran to the bathroom, chased by Harry and Katie's laughter.
"What happened to you?" Daphne asked Tracy when she walked back in, noticing Tracy's bright red skin.
"Nothing you want to know," Tracy said. "Oh don't sit in that chair, for more reasons you don't want to know."
"I see," Daphne said but it was clear she did not. "Go tell your mother the good news about me being your new potions tutor," Daphne told Dahlia, smiling fondly as the girl ran off.
"How'd Hermione take the news?" Tracy asked, smiling.
"Poorly," Daphne said with relish.
Tracy laughed and slipped an arm around her waist. "I love you so much babe."
Daphne smiled and kissed her sweetly. "I love you too."

mwinter1 - Why would they ask her? It is established that Alicia and Angelina are godmothers, no godfather.
DOOOOOOM Lord of Waffles - I am not sure what you are describing to be honest. My apologies. I have a lot built up and have more things I want to get to so I will defer for now.
alix33 - Andromeda was nervous too. I really liked Tonks' response too.
