Rent a Girlfriend Fanfic: Stepping Out of the Shadows
Chapter 12:
Kazuya's cheeks flushed with shame as he was startled. "Oops, guess I worked up quite an appetite!"
Akane could not help but giggle, her delight permeating the air around them. "Looks like your stomach agrees, Kazuya!"
As they walked down the street, their laughing blended, creating a symphony of joy. Their hunger was gnawing at them, and Akane had a bright plan to satisfy it.
"Hey, Kazuya, how about we grab a bite to eat at that charming café over there?" Akane suggested a quiet Italian restaurant nearby.
As he contemplated the suggestion, Kazuya's lips twitched. "That sounds ideal!" And this time, let me handle the bill. It's the least I can do in return for your generosity."
A smile tugged at Kazuya's lips as he considered the suggestion. "That sounds perfect! And this time, let me take care of the bill. It's the least I can do to repay your kindness."
Akane's eyes widened with surprise, and she shook her head, refusing his offer. "No, Kazuya, you don't have to. Helping a friend doesn't come with a price tag."
Kazuya was determined, his eyes filled with sincerity. "Please, Akane. It would mean a lot to me. Let me show my gratitude."
After a moment of contemplation, Akane finally relented, her smile growing wider. "Alright, Kazuya. Since you insist, I'll accept this gesture of yours."
A delightful perfume of fresh herbs and spices engulfed the two as they entered the Italian restaurant. They took a seat at a nice corner table, their excitement building as they browsed the menu. When he saw the pizza department, Kazuya's eyes brightened up.
"I think I'll order some delicious pizza for us." "What do you think, Akane?" he asked, his excitement evident.
Akane gently nudged his arm while laughing. "Oh no, Kazuya, we can't undo all those calories we burned during our workout." "Shall we try something a little lighter?"
Kazuya laughed, realizing the truth in her words. "You're right, Akane. It would be a shame to waste all that hard work."
After they ordered, the conversation flowed naturally between them. Curiosity sparked within Akane as she sought to learn more about her newfound friend. With a gentle smile, she turned to Kazuya and asked, "By the way, Kazuya-kun, which university do you attend?"
"Nerima University. How about you?" Kazuya answered
Akane's eyes lit up with excitement. "That's amazing! I am also a student at Nerima University. What are the odds? And guess what? I'm studying liberal arts."
Kazuya could not help but chuckle at the delightful coincidence. "Wow, what a small world! I am studying business administration. It's funny that we've never bumped into each other on campus before."
The topic naturally shifted to their daily routines. They discovered that on certain days, their schedules aligned, and they had morning classes at the same time. It felt like fate had brought them together.
"I have morning classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays," Kazuya mentioned.
Akane's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Me too! That is amazing. We can walk to university together on those days if you'd like."
Kazuya's face brightened with a wide smile. "I would love that, Akane-san."
"Akane-san, if you don't mind me asking, what made you start working out?"
For a moment, a subtle change came over Akane's expression. Her smile faltered, and her eyes gazed into the distance. The usual spark of enthusiasm seemed momentarily dampened.
Kazuya noticed her reaction and immediately regretted his question. "I'm sorry, Akane-san. You don't have to answer if you're not comfortable sharing."
"It's okay, I just struggled a lot in the past, so it's a touchy subject." But I can talk about it." While reassuring him, Akane said.
The waitress approached them, with their dinner and drinks. They both thanked the waitress, but even she could sense the uneasy atmosphere between them.
"Kazuya, I want to tell you about my past, about the struggles I faced," Akane began, her voice steady yet filled with emotion.
"There she is the pig is here!" exclaimed one of the bullies.
I attempted to flee, but they were faster than me. I attempted to enter a narrow street, but it was dead end.
The bullies surrounded me and beat me up.
"Here's some candy for you. This will make you much fatter!" exclaimed the bully as his sidekicks laughed and went away with him.
My mother usually greeted me at the door when I returned home, but she was always horrified by what had happened to me.
Every night for dinner, we ate the same thing.
"Why do we always eat the same food? I cannot lose weight if I only eat rice with chicken! I need vegetables too!"
"I'm sorry, Akane, but we don't have any more money to spend." Remember, my dear daughter if I had the money, I would have provided us better meals."
Because of our financial difficulties, I was also unable to participate in any sports.
I tried playing outside, but there were always bullies looking for me after school, so I eventually stayed inside.
When I was old enough to work. I started trying multiple part time jobs to earn some money.
With this money, I purchased some food for my family so that I could begin eating healthier. I also worked so that I could get a private gym membership.
I also attempted to learn martial arts at a private gym to defend myself.
I had no one to help me, so in the beginning I struggled a lot. Training was hard, because of my physique, but I kept pushing to achieve my goals.
Kazuya and Akane have finished their meals and are standing outside the restaurant.
"Now, I stand here before you, Kazuya-kun, proud of the person I have become," Akane said, a glimmer of determination shining in her eyes. "I have worked hard to achieve the physique and self-confidence I have today. It wasn't just about physical transformation; it was about finding the strength within myself to rise above the pain and protect the ones I care about."
Akane could not help but think of her younger sister, Asahi, while she spoke. She, too, was struggling under the weight of societal pressure and bullying. Akane's protective instincts rose to the surface, her voice filled with love and concern.
"I have a younger sister named Asahi, and she is going through what I went through," Akane explained, her voice firm. "I want to protect her, to be there for her so she doesn't have to go through what I did." That is why I appreciate our friendship, Kazuya-kun. It gives me the strength to battle on, not just for myself, but also for others I care about."
Kazuya's eyes welled up with tears as he listened to Akane's narrative, a newfound respect and affection blooming inside him. In a nonverbal gesture of support and understanding, he reached out and softly squeezed her hand.
"Thank you for sharing your story, Akane-san," Kazuya remarked sincerity in his voice. "Your determination and strength inspire me, and I'm honoured to be a part of your life."
"Remember, you don't have to go through this alone; I'm here to help if you need it." Kazuya added.
As Akane finished recounting her painful past, a heavy silence hung in the air between her and Kazuya. Emotions swirled within her, unsure of how he would react. But then, unexpectedly, Kazuya broke the silence by enveloping her in a tight, comforting hug.
Akane's eyes widened in surprise, feeling the warmth of Kazuya's embrace. A soft blush crept across her cheeks as she instinctively returned the hug, finding solace and comfort in his presence.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still. Akane's thoughts raced as she realized how much she had craved this kind of genuine affection and understanding.
"I could get used to this."
Reluctantly, they eventually let go of each other, the intensity of the moment fading. Akane's heart raced as she searched for an excuse to create some distance between them, her face still flushed with embarrassment.
She stammered, "Um... I just remembered that I have something I need to take care of. Sorry, Kazuya, I'll catch up with you later."
With that, she hurriedly turned and started walking away, her face resembling a ripe tomato. She could not help but feel a mix of emotions—shyness, surprise, and a longing for that closeness to continue.
In her cozy apartment, Chizuru sat engrossed in reading a script for an upcoming play. As she immersed herself in the world of her character, a notification on her phone interrupted her focus.
Curious, Chizuru picked up her phone and saw a message from Sumi, one of her closest friends. A smile brightened Chizuru's face as she read the name of messager, grateful for the distraction and the connection with her friend.
