Rent a Girlfriend Fanfic: Stepping Out of the Shadows
Chapter 15:
Chizuru found herself standing amidst the bustling atmosphere of the place where the auditions for the upcoming play were being held. As the aspiring actors and actresses gathered, anticipation hung in the air, blending with nervous excitement.
As she waited for the results to be announced, Chizuru felt a range of emotions, from anxiety to determination.
"Please give me the role!"
The director, a middle-aged man with a friendly smile, took a step forward, commanding the audience's attention. He thanked the participants for their hard work and dedication, recognizing the time and effort they had put into their auditions. He assured them that everyone had performed admirably, making the decision tough.
"Now," the director said, his voice rising with excitement, "it's time to announce the results." Chizuru's heart pounded in her chest as she held her breath and hoped for the best. The director stopped for a while, scanning the audience, before breaking into a smile.
"I am pleased to announce that for the lead roles, we have chosen Chizuru and Umi!" he declared, causing a surge of emotions to wash over Chizuru. It was a moment of triumph, but her joy was tinged with a hint of surprise. She had expected stiff competition, but the director's decision to cast both her and Umi was unexpected.
"OMG, I actually won!"
After the first thrill wore off, the director's next inquiry caught Chizuru off guard. "By any chance," he began, a sly grin on his lips, "are the two of you in a relationship?"
Chizuru and Umi exchanged shocked glances, their faces flushed. Chizuru had never considered a romantic relationship, and she believed Umi felt the same way. They both simultaneously shook their heads, denying any involvement.
"Well," chuckled the director, "I think it's time for a method acting exercise." I would like you both to start dating to make your on-stage chemistry more convincing. It will help you better understand your characters and deliver a more authentic performance in the play."
Chizuru's eyes widened in shock, her mind racing to comprehend the director's request. She could not fathom the idea of pretending to be in a relationship with Umi, even if it were for the sake of the play. Her thoughts mirrored Umi's expression, who wore a mixture of surprise and amusement.
"Dating Umi?!"
Trying to regain her composure, Chizuru managed to stammer, "But, sir, isn't it possible to create chemistry on stage without actually being together?"
The director's grin widened, and he patted Chizuru's shoulder gently. "Of course, it's possible. But trust me, experiencing a real connection can elevate your performance to new heights. Give it a try, and I promise it will be worth it."
Chizuru felt torn between her reservations and the director's conviction. She glanced at Umi, who seemed more intrigued than opposed to the idea.
A sense of excitement filled the air as the director handed out tickets to everyone engaged in the production. Chizuru held the tickets in her fingers, her mind racing with ideas about who she could invite to the performance. It was a chance for her to share her love of acting with someone special, someone who would appreciate the time and effort she had put into her performance.
Umi stood behind her, his eyes twinkling with delight. "Who are you going to invite, Chizuru-san?" he inquired, a teasing smile on his lips.
Chizuru shrugged, trying to conceal her rising interest in Umi's ideas. "I'm not sure." I will have to think about it. "And how about you?"
"I'm not sure either, to be honest."
Chizuru and Umi were walking together after acting classes. The day had been long, but the thrill of the play lingered in their imaginations. Chizuru's thoughts, on the other hand, were clouded with apprehension.
Umi broke the stillness as they walked along. "You know, Chizuru-san, I've been thinking about it." The director's suggestion that we do a handful of things as practice for our parts could be beneficial."
Chizuru pinched her brows, a look of uncertainty on her face. "I'm not sure, Umi-kun. It is strange pretending to be a relationship outside of practices. We're actors, and we can generate chemistry on stage without having to rely on real-life conditions."
Umi's eyes twinkled with excitement as he tried to persuade her. "I understand your concerns but give it some thought. The more at ease we are with one another, the more genuine our performances will be. It's a chance to go deeper into our characters and genuinely comprehend the complexities of a relationship."
Chizuru sighed, torn between her reservations and Umi's contagious energy. She came to a halt and turned to face him, her voice laced with frustration and confusion. "But Umi-kun, what if we get too involved in the act?" What if the lines blur and our friendship suffer as a result?"
Umi locked his gaze on her, his stare strong yet soothing. "Chizuru-san, believe me. We will draw clear lines and remind ourselves that this is only for fun. It will not affect our daily existence. We've been through a lot together, and I'm confident we can handle this."
Umi's next question caught her off guard. "Chizuru-san, do you like Kazuya?" he asked, his eyes searching hers.
Chizuru blinked, surprised by the sudden inquiry. She hesitated for a moment before responding with a vague answer, not wanting to reveal her true feelings. "I... I do not know, Umi-kun. We're just friends, and we've been through a lot together."
Umi nodded, satisfied with her answer. "Alright, fair enough. Is there anyone else you like?"
Chizuru shook her head, her voice softening. "No, there isn't. It's just... complicated."
Umi's look was a mix of comprehension and determination. "Then it shouldn't be a problem for us, Chizuru-san." We will approach it like professionals, knowing that it will just be until the game starts. We can manage these two issues together, and it will only improve our performance."
Chizuru sighed, her resistance gradually fading. Umi's constant support and their mutual love of performing were difficult to overlook. She inhaled deeply and nodded. "Come on, Umi-kun. Let us get started. Let us embrace the practice and create genuinely outstanding performances."
Kazuya walked briskly back to his flat, his mind still occupied with the events of his date with Sumi. A flash of activity caught his eye as he reached his building, leading him to come to a halt. His heart skipped a beat when he recognized the folks ahead of him—Chizuru and Umi, strolling in animated discussion.
Shock swept through Kazuya, rendering him mute for a brief period. Questions raced through his mind, and he frantically sought an explanation for their unexpected companionship. Was there something going on between them? Were they in a relationship? The options were both incomprehensible and terrifying.
Kazuya took a deep breath and summoned the confidence to approach them. Chizuru and Umi became aware of his presence as he approached and interrupted their talk. Kazuya's nerves were fraying, but he forced a grin and greeted them with as much calm as he could muster.
"Hello, Chizuru." Umi. What is it that brings you two together? "Are you... returning from somewhere?" Kazuya's voice trembled slightly; his curiosity tinged with worry.
Chizuru's eyes widened with astonishment and realization, but she immediately recovered her composure. "Hello, Kazuya. Yes, we recently completed our acting classes. Umi and I were talking about our parts and the impending play."
"That's fantastic! "I'm glad you two are getting the chance to work together," Kazuya said, his voice tinged with excitement. "I'm confident you'll both deliver an outstanding performance."
Chizuru smiled, a look of thanks in her eyes. "Thank you very much, Kazuya. We'll give it our all."
"Why are you nearing Chizuru's apartment?' Umi asked with a slight annoyed tone.
"I'm her next-door neighbour." Kazuya explained calmly.
"I see."
Kazuya could not shake the feeling of being an outsider as they made small talk, seeing a connection between Chizuru and Umi that he did not quite grasp. He reminded himself, though, that their relationship was strictly professional and centred on the game. He had no right to eavesdrop on their private lives.
Umi entered his apartment, his rage bubbling beneath the surface. He had held his cool during the interaction with Kazuya and Chizuru, putting on a nice face, but he could not help but feel irritated within. The realization that Chizuru and Kazuya were not just classmates but also neighbours piqued his interest.
He threw off his shoes and collapsed onto the couch, his mind repeating the earlier scenario.
"How could she have kept that information from me?" "Does she not value me?"
Umi recognized, as he sat in his apartment's silence, that his dissatisfaction emanated from a sense of vulnerability. He had begun to have true feelings for Chizuru, a bond that had grown stronger during their shared experiences in the game. But knowing she lived so close to Kazuya, a former romantic interest, Umi could not help but feel frightened.
His mind raced, and he wondered whether he was just a fill-in, a suitable friend to cover the vacuum left by Kazuya. Umi's annoyance morphed into a tangled web of insecurity and self-doubt.
"I need to solve this fast."
The sound of the doorbell rang through Kazuya's flat, and his heart skipped a beat. He halted for a second, startled, before proceeding to the door. His thoughts were racing with questions. Who could be paying him a visit at this hour? And why did his heart seem to be racing in anticipation?
Kazuya glanced through the peephole, his curiosity getting the best of him. Chizuru stood on the other side, her countenance a mix of determination and vulnerability.
