Rent a Girlfriend Fanfic: Stepping Out of the Shadows

Chapter 16:

He opened the door after a brief hesitation, inviting her into his apartment.

"Mizuhara-san," Kazuya murmured, his voice surprised and confused. "What is it that brings you here?"

Chizuru was taken aback when she heard her rental name, but she took a deep breath and her eyes filled with a mix of determination and tenderness. "I need to speak with you, Kazuya-kun." About the last three months."

Kazuya's heartbeat went faster as he motioned for her to take a seat. "Certainly, Mizuhara-san. Let's talk about it."

"So, do you want me to tell you my side first, or do you want me to ask you some questions first?" Chizuru inquired.

"Just tell your side of the story first." Kazuya stated

Chizuru took a long breath and softened her voice. "I want you to know, Kazuya, that I never meant to hurt you when I ghosted you. It was never my goal to cause you any pain."

Kazuya could not keep his thoughts to himself and began asking Chizuru questions.

"So, why did you ignore me for three months?" Was it all a ruse when you kissed me? "Did you ever feel anything for me?"

"Kazuya-kun..."

"No, Mizuhara-san, when you kissed me, I was overjoyed!" I was hoping we would finally start dating because you did not have to kiss me! It was all your decision!"

"I'm aware of the rental agreement's prohibition on kissing. You bent the rules for me. I assumed that meant something, but I was definitely wrong."

Chizuru's eyes welled up with remorse as she reached out to gently touch his arm. "I never wanted to hurt you, Kazuya. I'm here because I want both of us to have clear communication going ahead."

Kazuya drew back slightly, the sting of her disappearance still fresh in his thoughts. "Clear communication? How can we have that when you vanished without a trace?"

"We are neighbours, but you managed to avoid me for three months."

Chizuru lowered her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm really sorry, Kazuya. I did not know what I was feeling, and I wanted some space to process it. I felt that by not seeing you, I would be able to better comprehend my own emotions."

Kazuya's rage erupted; his voice laced with pain. "And you couldn't even discuss it with me? I would have understood. I would have given you the room you required. Instead, I was left in the dark, unsure of what I had done wrong."

Kazuya's anger softened, replaced by a mixture of sadness and longing. "Chizuru, I love you. But I cannot wait forever. The ghosting hurt me more than I can express. I need to protect myself too."

Chizuru's ears flowed down her cheeks as she nodded, her voice laced with regret. "I see what you're saying, Kazuya. I am deeply sorry for causing you such anguish. I do not expect you to wait forever, but I do not have all the answers yet. I'd like to chat to you about things and see if there's a chance for us."

Kazuya's heart bled at her words, caught between his love for Chizuru and his scars. He inhaled deeply, his voice filled with a mixture of affection and self-preservation. "I can't promise to wait forever, Chizuru." But I am willing to have this discussion and hear you out. Just know that I expect honesty and openness from you in the future."

Chizuru nodded, her tears continuing to fall. "I promise, Kazuya. I will be honest with you, and I will do my best to make things right. I do not want to lose you. You're the only one I have left."

After a brief moment of silence, Chizuru reached into her bag and pulled out a ticket. "Kazuya, there's something I want you to see. I am performing in a play, and I want you to be there. Despite everything, you're still important to me."

As he accepted the ticket, Kazuya's amazement was visible on his face. "A play? I'd be honoured to see you perform, Mizuhara-san."

Chizuru's eyes sparkled with hope. "Thank you very much, Kazuya-kun. It means a great deal to me. Following the performance, I intend to have a small birthday party with some friends at my place. I'd like you to come if you don't mind."

Kazuya hesitated for a moment before a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "I'd love to come, Mizuhara-san."

Chizuru took a deep breath and gathered her courage before approaching Kazuya about Akane. She wanted to understand their connection from his point of view, so she began with caution. "I spoke with Enomoto-san, but I also wanted to hear your side of the story, Kazuya." "How did you first meet her?"

Kazuya's expression softened; his gaze distant as he recalled those difficult times. "Mizuhara-san, after you ghosted me, I fell into a deep depression. I felt lost and worthless. But then, I came across an advertisement for a nearby gym. Something inside me sparked, and I made the decision to work out and become a man who is worthy of standing next to you."

Chizuru listened intently, her heart aching for the pain he had endured. "And that's when you met Enomoto-san?"

Kazuya nodded, a small smile appearing on his face. "Yes, Akane and I instantly clicked at the gym. She noticed that I was a beginner who needed help and offered to help me with my workouts. We've become good friends since then."

"Hold on, wait a minute."

As Kazuya spoke about Akane, something clicked in his mind, and his expression shifted to one of realization. "Wait, Mizuhara-san. It just dawned on me. Akane-san plays the same role in my life now that you played back then when Mami-chan dumped me."

Chizuru's eyes widened, her heart skipping a beat at the revelation. She knew what had transpired between her and Kazuya after Mami's departure, and the fear of history repeating itself unsettled her. "What do you mean, Kazuya? Are you saying...?"

"I felt terrible back then, but you saved me."

"Because of you, I could look forward to life again. You gave me something to look out for."

Taking a deep breath, Chizuru gathered her courage and asked Kazuya, her voice trembling slightly, "How do you see Akane, Kazuya? Do you... feel the same way about her as you did about me back then?"

A wide smile spread across Kazuya's face, his eyes sparkling with warmth. "Akane-san is amazing," he said, his voice filled with admiration. "She's been there for me when I needed someone the most, just like you were. I'm grateful to have her in my life."

"However, do I have feelings for her?" It is too soon for that. I love her company, but for the time being, I'm content with my present situation."

Chizuru's heart dropped, and a knot in her throat formed. She had hoped for a different reaction, one that would alleviate her concerns. Kazuya's statements, on the other hand, just reaffirmed her fears. She recognized that the link between Kazuya and Akane was growing deeper, and the prospect of Kazuya falling in love with Akane terrified her.

Unable to hide her emotions any longer, Chizuru feigned a smile and stood up abruptly. "I... It is getting late, Kazuya. I should head back to my apartment," she stammered, her voice betraying her inner turmoil.

"All OK. It was good to see you again." Kazuya said with a smile.

After Chizuru left, Kazuya remained seated in his apartment, his mind now consumed by Chizuru's questions and concerns. He replayed their conversation, searching for clarity amidst the complex web of emotions he had been entangled in. Thoughts of Akane and his growing connection with her lingered in his mind, challenging his perception of their relationship.

As he reflected, Kazuya began to realize the stark differences between Akane and Chizuru. While their roles in his life seemed similar on the surface, the two girls were undeniably unique individuals. Chizuru had always been there for him, playing the role of a supportive girlfriend even when their relationship was initially pretend. Her selflessness and dedication had won Kazuya's heart, ultimately leading him to fall in love with her.

Akane, on the other hand, had entered his life as a friend, someone who understood his difficulties and pushed him to do better. She was encouraging and caring, but their bond had not yet grown the same depth as Kazuya's with Chizuru.

Kazuya's smile faded as these thoughts formed in his mind. He began to doubt his feelings for Akane, understanding that he had been swept up in the excitement of their newfound friendship. She had been a significant person in his life, someone who had brought comfort and encouragement through a tough time. He could not deny that his feelings for Chizuru were on a completely different level.

Kazuya admitted the truth with a sorrowful heart. Chizuru was the one who had touched his heart, encouraged him to be a better person, and had become a part of his life. While he valued Akane's companionship and support, he could not see a future with her the way he could with Chizuru.

"I can't seem to stop loving her."
