Rent a Girlfriend Fanfic: Stepping Out of the Shadows
Chapter 17:
Chizuru stumbled out of Kazuya's apartment, her heart pounding in her chest, and a lump forming in her throat. The weight of her emotions threatened to suffocate her as she made her way to her own apartment. Each step felt heavy, as if she were carrying the weight of her shattered hopes and dreams on her shoulders.
"Is it true?" Chizuru paused, her breath catching. "Does Kazuya really like Enomoto-san?"
She struggled to open the door as tears welled up in her eyes. She stepped inside and shut the door behind her, feeling the weight of the world fall on her shoulders. Chizuru sobbed as she leaned against the door, unable to contain her emotions any longer.
"He told me he liked me," she said quietly to herself, her voice breaking with grief. "But now... Enomoto-san?"
Chizuru collapsed to the ground, tears spilling down her cheeks. The image of Kazuya's beaming smile raced across her memory, exacerbating the pain in her heart.
"He started shining when he started talking about her."
She closed her eyes, attempting to block out the images of Kazuya and Akane laughing and smiling together. Her heart ached at the prospect of losing him to someone else.
"It's not fair from me to be upset after ghosting him for so long."
Chizuru's phone buzzed on the coffee table just as she was drowned in her sea of emotions. It was Umi's message. He invited her to meet up next Saturday, March 23rd.
Chizuru paused; her thinking muddled by Kazuya's presence. She questioned if meeting up with him would be fair to Umi while her heart was still entangled in the web of her unrequited feelings.
"Perhaps this will be good. I need some distractions."
"Count me in," she texted, a glint of determination in her voice amidst the emotional turmoil. "I could use a friend by my side."
Forward to the following day, March 23rd, 2019, at lunchtime. Chizuru and Umi sat at a pleasant café, drinking their beverages. Chizuru's eyelids were tired, the result of a sleepless night spent struggling with her emotions. Umi, on the other hand, had a troubled expression on his face, ready to deal with the intricacies of their unusual arrangement.
Chizuru took a deep breath, intending to tell Umi about her complicated feelings for Kazuya. But before she could say anything, Umi's voice cut through, his tone forceful yet soft.
"Chizuru-chan, we need to talk about our fake dating," Umi said, his gaze locked with hers.
Umi's quick deflection caught Chizuru off guard, and her eyes widened. She had planned to talk about her sadness, uncertainties, and confusion about Kazuya. But Umi's eagerness reminded her of the limitations they had set and the reason for their phony friendship.
"I understand," Chizuru said, her tone tinged with regret and resignation. "I know we agreed to this, and I should respect that."
Umi leaned forward, his expression softening as he reached out to hold Chizuru's hand. His touch conveyed reassurance and understanding.
"Chizuru-chan, I'm not asking for physical closeness," Umi clarified, his voice filled with genuine concern. "But we have to take this seriously. We cannot allow ourselves to get emotionally entangled with other people. That includes Kinoshita-kun."
Chizuru's heart skipped a beat, her shock evident in her eyes. She pulled her hand away gently, her voice tinged with a mix of disbelief and defense.
"Why are you mentioning Kazuya-kun? He is simply someone who rented me."
Umi gave her a look that said he suspected she was lying.
"But remember what you said after the party?" Umi reminded her gently. "you told me you didn't dislike him. That... that means something, doesn't it?"
Chizuru's mind raced, desperately searching for the right words to explain herself. She had meant those words in a moment of vulnerability, a moment when she had felt a flicker of connection with Umi. But now, faced with the weight of his expectations, she felt a surge of uncertainty.
"Plus, you and I aren't even dating." We're just acting."
Umi sighed, his gaze fixed as he met Chizuru's.
"I know we're not in a real relationship, but that doesn't mean we can ignore the impact our actions have on each other," Umi emphasized gently but firmly. "We agreed to support each other through this charade. And it's critical that you focus on that commitment right now."
"I... I do not know," Chizuru acknowledged candidly, her voice softened by vulnerability. "I've never really experienced romance before."
Umi stretched out, softly holding Chizuru's hand in his own, his touch providing warmth and comfort.
"Chizuru-chan, let's practice," Umi said, his voice calm but firm. "Let's make it look like we're dating. And in order to do so, we must inform our pals, especially Kinoshita-kun."
Chizuru's eyes widened, a protest on the verge of spilling from her lips. But she knew deep down that Umi would not back down from this. He would take matters into his own hands if she refused.
"But... but Kazuya-kun," Chizuru stammered, her voice worried. "He's been a friend of mine for a long time. I don't want to cause him any harm."
Umi's grip tightened slightly, his gaze steadfast as he locked eyes with Chizuru.
"I understand your concern, Chizuru-chan," Umi responded, his voice full of sympathy and resolve. "But if we're going to make this work, we have to be honest with each other." I'll tell him if you don't."
Chizuru's objections were drowned out by a nervous quiet. She knew Umi would not back down on this. To regain control of the situation and safeguard her friendship with Kazuya, she would have to confront him and confess the truth herself.
"I understand," Chizuru said quietly, her tone tinged with resignation. "I'll do my best to uphold our agreement."
Umi softly clasped her hand, his eyes filled with understanding and sympathy.
"Thank you, Chizuru-chan," he quietly whispered. "I know it's difficult, but we're all in this together." We'll take it one step at a time as we manage these challenges."
Flashforward to April 5th. The gym buzzed with the familiar sounds of clanking weights and the rhythmic grunts of exertion. Akane and Kazuya continued their regular training sessions, their dedication evident in their unwavering commitment to their fitness goals.
Meanwhile, Chizuru had been engaged in the world of her impending play, devoting all her energy to her performance up until this point.
Akane found herself partnering with Kazuya once more, this time focusing on their chest muscles. Kazuya sat on the bench press, a determined expression on his face as he prepared to push himself even further than before.
Kazuya took a deep breath and grabbed the weighted bar, tensing his muscles as he lifted it off the rack. Akane followed him, her gaze tracing his motions with a mix of curiosity and admiration. Memories of their first training sessions flashed through her head, the picture of Kazuya labouring to lift the bare bar imprinted on her consciousness.
Akane was lost in her thoughts as Kazuya concluded his set of bench presses, droplets of sweat dripping on his brow. She could not take her eyes off him, tracing the curves of his better physique. It occurred to her that he had changed from the first time they met.
"He's looking really handsome now," Akane observed, her thoughts slipping into appreciation. Kazuya's passion had captivated her, and the consequences were visible. She caught herself watching, oblivious to the passage of time.
Kazuya's voice cut through her reverie, calling out to her. "Hello, Akane-san! Are you all, right? You were lost in contemplation."
Akane sprang up from her reverie, a flush rising her cheeks. She swiftly collected herself to conceal her humiliation.
"Oh, uh, sorry about that," she began, her voice slightly self-conscious. "I guess I got carried away." I was simply buried in my own thoughts."
A warm smile grew across Kazuya's face as he chuckled. He wiped his brow with a towel and headed over to where Akane was standing.
"Well, as long as they were good thoughts," he said, his tone light. "But seriously, you appear to be very distracted." "Is everything okay?"
"Kazuya-kun, you've come a long way," Akane said, genuine surprise in her voice. "You went from just lifting the bar to now adding 15 kilograms on each side."
"Thanks, Akane-san," he said, his voice tinged with pride and tiredness. "I've been pushing myself and attempting to maintain consistency." It's astonishing how far you can get with hard work."
After their workout we see Akane and Kazuya leaving the gym, their bodies vibrating with the adrenaline of their exertion. As they walked side by side, the fresh breeze touched their skin and their discussion flowed between them.
Akane summoned the strength to bring up a more intimate subject as they approached a quiet area of the street. She took a long breath, her voice tinged with vulnerability.
