Extended Family

Chapter 59 – Of a Feather

Takes place just before the end of Harry's fifth year, around chapters 109 and 110 of Family

Ron looked at the hand pie with deep distrust. Then he looked at his grinning twin siblings with equal if not greater distrust. "No."

"What? Why not?" George asked, still grinning.

"It's apple, your favorite," Fred said, still grinning.

"What's wrong with it?" Ron asked.

"Nothing," they said together insincerely.

"Uh huh. Then why don't you two eat it?"

"There's only one," George said.

"And it's too tiny to split," Fred said.

"So we decided to give it to you."

"Our adorable little brother."

Ron stared at them. "Riiiiight. Hey Harry, fruit pie?"

Harry took it. "Hey thanks. I'm a bit peckish."

"Don't eat it!" George shouted.

"I knew it!" Ron roared.

Too late. Harry bit into the pie and swallowed on reflex, startled by George's shout. A burst of light filled the air, making the Weasley brothers shield their eyes and turn away for a moment. They looked back and they gasped at the pile of clothing on the ground.

"Did…that wasn't supposed to happen," George said weakly.

"You were going to kill me?!" Ron shouted, punching his brothers.

"We didn't kill him and we weren't going to kill you!" Fred shouted back.

"Where is he?!" Ron yelled.

"And where did he go without his clothes?" George groaned. "Fred, did you grab the candy from the red box?"

"Yes! Bottom right section."

"I said bottom left!"

"Oh bugger," the twins said at the same time.

"What does that mean?" Ron asked, worried.

"Uh, well bottom left was a canary crème that we were trying out on people. It temporarily turns you into a canary," George said.

"What does the bottom right one do?!" Ron asked.

"Uh…I don't know?" Fred said sheepishly. "It's another transforming one, I know that."

"Shut up," George commanded. He knelt down, noticing that the pile of clothing was moving. "I think Harry's still here." He reached into the clothes and fished about. "Ah ha! Gotcha. Feels like feathers so we weren't that far off thank goodness." He pulled a small form out and the other two knelt beside him.

"He's an owl," Ron said dumbly.

George held a tiny snowy owl in his hands. Unlike most snowy owls, he had dark circles around his large emerald eyes and a tiny black feather stood out on the forehead. The feathers on the top of the head stuck out every which way as well. The owl looked around, eyes widening with identifiable panic before they focused on George.

"OW!" George yelped when the owl bit him. "Harry?! Is that you? Do you know what's going on?"

Harry glared at George and very deliberately bit him again, beak sinking into his thumb.

"Okay okay let go!" George winced when Harry did. Harry barked angrily, flapping his wings and stomping his talons. "Okay, so, uh, not my fault. Fred grabbed the wrong candy."

"Oh no, you definitely said right, not left," Fred said. "And also not my fault, I suggested we ask someone unrelated to us to test this on."

"Yeah actually, we didn't give you the pie at all," George said.

"You two are not blaming this on me!" Ron said angrily. "I'd be some red owl right now, wouldn't I?!"

Harry screeched loudly and glared at the twins.

"We'll fix this!" they said hurriedly.

"You can fix this right?" Ron asked.

"We fix almost everything we do," Fred said.

"It's just…we have to figure out exactly what we did to the candy and figure out the solutions," George. "Perfectly doable but it'll take a bit." He hurriedly put Harry down on the windowsill in the team corner. "And I'll need all my fingers," he said as Harry clacked his beak angrily.

"We have to go to our work lab, it's on the other end of the castle," Fred said.

"We might've scattered stuff about too," George said weakly.

"Do we take him with us?" Fred asked.

"We shouldn't in case he gets bitey again," George said. "It'll be safer for him here too."

Ron's eyes widened and he snatched up Harry's clothes and wrapped him in them, depositing the pile on the window sill. "Sorry mate!" he half-whispered before he pretended to look out the window contemplatively.

Fred gave him a questioning look before turning and groaning inaudibly. "Hermione! Hello! How's it going?"

Hermione frowned. "Okay, what did you do?"

"What makes you think he did anything?" George said breezily. "Oh hey there Luna, fancy seeing you here."

Luna blinked. "I had a feeling I would see something adorable here so I tagged along when I saw Hermione."

Hermione glared at the Weasley brothers, watching them sweat. "What did you do," she said again, voice stern.

"We do a lot of things," Fred said nervously.

"Nothing we'd own up to however without confession and ample evidence," George said nervously.

"Does Harry normally leave his clothes out in the common room?" Luna asked, pointing.

"Oh yeah, all the time. He's really messy," Ron said nervously.

"No he does not," Hermione scolded. She reached out and looked offended when Ron smacked her hand. "Ronald Weasley, you did not just smack my hand!"

"Well don't go around grabbing a bloke's pants!" Ron said. "That's not proper behavior!"

Hermione swelled up to shout but stopped when the pile of clothes rustled and muffled indignant hooting could be heard.

"That doesn't sound like Hedwig." Luna reached out and lifted the clothes and put them aside. She and Hermione gasped at Harry shaking his head and blinking like his current state of being. "Oh my goodness, I was right," Luna said wonderingly. "You are adorable!"

"Harry?!" Hermione gasped. She knelt down and looked him in the eye. "Is that you?!"

"Yeah and he's an animagus!" Ron said loudly. "Can you believe it? He kept that from us for so long."

"That's the name of the candy!" Fred shouted. "That's what we were trying to make!"

"Harry is not an animagus and what candy?!" Hermione yelled.

"May I hold you?" Luna asked pleadingly, holding her hands out.

Harry sighed and carefully walked onto Luna's hands. She sat on the sill and gleefully held him carefully. "I like your feather glasses," she said to him. "They're very you."

"Look, we're going to fix it!" George said as he and the twins cowered behind Ron. "We'll totally get things done up proper and Harry'll be back to normal in no time."

"In fact, if you two watch him, I'll go with them to make sure they stay on task and do it right," Ron said. He took off running and the twins ran after him, fleeing the common room.

"I'm going to kill you!" Hermione shouted and the three Weasleys ran just a little faster, pushing each other in their haste to get out of the line of fire.

"Wait until Harry is restored first," Luna said prosaically. "And I am sure Alicia and Angelina and Katie will be more than happy to assist you."

"All three of them for many reasons," Hermione sighed. She sat beside Luna and looked down at owl Harry, her frown turning into a smile. "You really are rather adorable like that though Harry."

Harry's feathers prickled and he cheeped, pulling his wings in front of his face.

"It is extraordinary that you have your glasses and your scar," Hermione said thoughtfully, looking at his feathers. "It really is like an animagus transformation. I know a magical's animagus form is inherently unique of course but I never imagined Harry would turn into an owl."

"Well Harry does enjoy flying of course," Luna said and owl Harry bobbed his head in agreement. "But it is a candy version of a complicated ritual so perhaps some corners were cut after all. Also, things do happen strangely when Harry is involved."

Harry sighed loudly and nodded wearingly.

"Gosh, it's adorable when you do that in this form," Hermione giggled. She flinched back a little when Harry flapped a wing at her nose. "No need to do that," she giggled harder. She gasped when Harry turned his back to her and waggled his tail feathers at her. "Harry!"

"He learned that from Hedwig," Luna giggled mightily.

"No need to be rude!" Hermione said, waggling a finger at him.

"If Harry had fingers right now, I think he'd be making a very distinct gesture," Luna said, giggling even harder.

"Hey girls," Katie said as she walked up to them. "Have you two seen Harry?" She looked down at the owl in Luna's hands. "Aww, you got an owl Luna? Looks a lot like Hedwig, a little tiny though. Wait." Katie frowned. "Did Hedwig get shrunk again?"

"Yes, no, and no," Luna said. "Answering your questions in order," she explained at Katie's confused look.

Katie nodded slowly. "Okay." She looked to the side. "Is…why are Harry's clothes lying there?"

"Because they're a bit too big for him at the moment," Hermione said and she and Luna giggled harder with Harry glaring at them.

"What?" Katie said, completely confused. She cupped her hands at Luna's gesture and she gently accepted owl-Harry being deposited in them. She gasped when Harry faced her. "Oh. Sweet. Merlin," she breathed. "Harry…is that you?"

Harry nodded shyly.

"You are so adorable," Katie gushed. "Wait. Why are you an owl?!"

"The twins," Luna and Hermione said at the same time.

"Of bloody course the twins," Katie growled. She sighed. "I hope it's reversible."

"They say it is," Luna said.

"That's good." Katie's face softened and she looked lovingly down at Harry. "You have the weirdest things happen to you."

Harry rolled his very large eyes.

"At least you're a cute owl," Katie said. She sat in a chair and leaned back a little, settling him on her stomach. "Not that you're not cute when you're not an owl," she grinned.

"You are taking the fact that your boyfriend is an owl rather well," Hermione remarked.

"Like I said, he has the weirdest things happen to him," Katie repeated. She gently ran her fingers through the feathers on his head. "And he's super adorable like this."

"I can't get over how much he looks like Hedwig," Hermione smiled.

"They do share a special bond," Luna said. "Makes sense to me really."

"Aww, did Hedwig get shrunk again?" Alicia asked as she and Angelina walked to the corner.

"Not exactly," Katie smiled.

"Why did someone draw glasses on that poor owl?" Angelina asked. "Wait, do owls have green eyes?" She drew the conclusion in her mind and she gasped. "Is that Harry?!"

Harry hooted in a disgruntled way while Luna, Hermione, and Katie started laughing.

"Oh my goodness. How are you so adorable?" Alicia asked as she leaned down to look at him. "You're a literal baby bird now! Hey!" She gasped when Harry turned around and waggled his tail feathers at her. "Don't you go about mooning me, Harry Potter!"

"Well he doesn't have hands to make gestures now, does he?" Angelina giggled. "How did this-wait." She looked around. "Where're the twins?"

"Looking to how to fix this, allegedly," Hermione sighed.

"Those tits," Alicia growled.

Angelina shook her head. "We'll get them back later." She gently rubbed Harry's head. "Gosh, you are way too cute like this."

A tapping sound on the window drew their attention and they saw Hedwig standing on the outside lip, tapping on the glass again with her beak. She looked very concerned and she glared at the girls standing there.

"This will be interesting," Hermione said and she opened the window.

Hedwig flew in and fluttered around the corner a few times before landing on the table. Katie lifted owl-Harry and set him down gently on the table and Hedwig's eyes went wide as she looked down at him. She tilted her head back and forth and Harry barked up at her. She then cuddled close to Harry and began to preen his feathers.

"Oh this is the most adorable thing ever," Katie said.

"She looks very happy," Luna observed.

The door opened and the twins and Ron came running in, skidding to a stop when they saw the Chasers and Hedwig. "It was Ron's fault!" the twins said and pointed.

"My arse it was!" Ron shouted. "They were trying to get me!"

"Did you find a cure?" Hermione cut in, looking at them sternly.

"Yeah and we tested it on each other," George said. "We each took the candy and took the cure and it worked just fine for all of us."

"Does he want to change back?" Fred asked, seeing Hedwig cuddling Harry.

"Or does she not want him to change back," George snickered. They blanched at the incredibly angry look they got from the snowy owl.

"Hand it over before she comes after us," Ron muttered.

"Right," George said swiftly. "Just got to get this down your…beak and you'll be fine." He handed over a small candy.

"Oh wait." Luna put Harry down in the corner and flicked her wand up, making a blanket go across the space.

"Oh right, good call," Ron said, face red.

Another burst of light appeared from behind the blanket privacy screen and after some shuffling, Harry reappeared fully clothed. His skin was a little paler than normal and kept rubbing his jaw and mouth but otherwise looked like he normally did.

"Are you okay?" Katie asked, fighting a smile.

"Yeah. Having a beak is really weird." He blinked oddly. "And you know, the change in perspectives and everything." He sat heavily on a chair and smiled when Hedwig fluttered to his head and cooed against him. "Still, not a completely terrible experience in hindsight I guess."

"Speak for yourself," George sniffed, sticking his thumb out.

"Yeah no, Idon't feel bad about that at all," Harry snorted. "Also I'm never eating anything any of you give me again. Only from your mum and maybe Percy but that's it."

"What did you three turn into?" Luna asked.

"Don't ask," Fred muttered.

"But I already asked," Luna complained.

"Let's just say we are discontinuing the animagus candy line until we can work out the problems," George said evasively.

"I bet they turned into arseholes," Alicia glowered.

"Those aren't even animals," Fred sniffed.

"Dumbasses then," Angelina said.

"Also not an animal, not a literal one anyways," George sniffed.

"Too bad you did not get a chance to try flying," Luna said to Harry. "Hedwig would be an excellent instructor."

"Oh you're right. Say, that's a thought," Harry hummed.

"No," Katie said firmly. "No getting more candy to try and fly. You can fly on a broom."

"But Katie," Harry pleaded, looking at her dolefully, an expression that Hedwig mirrored.

She covered her eyes with a hand. "Nope, I'm sorry."

"Guess I'll have to look into becoming a real animagus then," Harry grinned.

"If you do, make sure you turn into something cuddly," Katie giggled.
