Alright finally I have this one posted, I know it's been what? Six months since this one was posted but I hope you won't be disappointed. Also just a friendly reminder that Tim is older than Dick in this one.
Thanks and I don't own the Animated Series or anything Batman related.
All was well in Gotham after another summer day was complete and the beautiful stars decorated the sky. The people were walking back to their homes when they saw someone swinging across the rooftops. This did not alarm anyone as they knew who it was.
"Mommy, who is that?" A young boy asked.
"Why that's Batman honey." Suddenly the so called Batman flew right into an electrical sign. He went right in between the two electrical letters. The people knew Batman wouldn't do something so dangerous and bizarre. The man kept swinging not at all afraid of what was happening. Fortunately there were two people who saw the man that could possibly help him; Batman and Robin.
"What's his story?" Robin asked.
"Let's ask." Batman said and grappled towards the man. Unfortunately the man let go of the rope to avoid hitting another electrical sign. Luckily he managed to grab onto a ledge not at all unscathed by what just happened. After saving the electrical sign from falling on the people he helped the man up.
"Are you alright sir?" Batman asked.
"Great! Never been better."
"Good. Now there's a window right over there that you can…"
"Window? I'm not going in yet. This is going to be the best night of my life."
"It can also be the last."
"Oh come on party pooper. There's nothing to be scared of. Fear is like a prison and I've just broken out of it." The man said and pushed Batman and himself off the building. Thinking fast Batman grabbed the man and used his grapple to slow their fall. Everyone started cheering for Batman and the police arrived to take him into custody.
Break*Break*Break
The next morning for the Wayne family was mostly like every other day. Bruce would wake up, eat breakfast with his sons and head off to work.
"Hey…Dickie. You'll never guess what happened last night." Tim Drake whispered to his younger brother.
"Go 'way Timmy."
"So it was just me and Batman vs. Penguin's gang. He was trying to smuggle some drug I think. Batman and I put a homing device on one of the trucks and I knocked on the door. When they saw who it was they took off and led us right to their hideout."
"Stupid gang." Dick said still with his eyes closed.
"We get there and when Penguin saw us he started throwing a temper tantrum. 'You idiots led'um right to us. Get'um.' It took us like two minutes max to defeat them. Then Penguin does what he does, starts running away but I caught up to him and took him down with one punch. While I was doing that Batman went to use the explosive gel on the vault of I think drugs. He closed the vault and Penguin started screaming like a toddler. 'Don't you dare Batman. I'll kill ya.' Batman then gave me the honor of pushing the button. Penguin started acting like I was a little kid calling me his pal. He got so mad when I pushed it." Dick meanwhile was trying to go back to sleep. "Did you seriously fall asleep again? Now here I was thought you'd be excited about my Robin adventures."
"Sleepy." Dick mumbled.
"Oh you're still sleepy? Let me fix that." Tim said and picked him up holding him upside down.
"Timmy, leave me alone." Dick laughed.
"This is what you get you knucklehead." Tim said. "Oh and also there was some guy trying to swing across the rooftops."
"You mean Bruce?" He asked now awake.
"No, just some random guy swinging into electrical signs and jumping off buildings. It's like he had no fear or something. Anyway you wanna sneak into Bruce's office later?"
"Yeah." Dick said and the two went downstairs to say goodbye to Bruce before he left for the day.
Break*Break*Break
Two hours later
"How was the inspection Mr. Wayne. I hope it went well." Bruce's secretary asked when her boss came back from his meetings.
"It went well Sarah. Any messages?"
"Just one from Seymour Grey. He's been calling all morning."
"Who?"
"One of the clerks downstairs, normally a quiet guy usually."
"Okay. Thanks." Bruce said and started walking into his office.
"Oh, there's one more thing; or should I say two."
"Let me guess." Bruce said walking in to see Tim doing acrobatics on his chair and Dick was sitting in another chair sucking on a lollipop.
"Playing hooky you two?" Bruce asked.
"It's summer vacation. How do you forget that?" Tim said only to get a little glare by Bruce. "Nevermind, forgot who I was talking to. So what have you heard about our Tarzan guy?"
"Still unconscious, but the police found out something very interesting. He had acrophobia."
"He was afraid of acrobats?" Dick asked.
"Not quite Dick, it means fear of heights."
"No joke?! Then why…"
"YOU CAN'T PUT ME OFF ANY LONGER WAYNE! I'VE GOT IDEAS! IDEAS THAT ARE GOING TO LIMIT COST ACCOUNTING!" A man said suddenly storming into his office scaring poor Dick half to death.
"Mr. Grey I presume."
"Yeah that's me; little old Seymour Gray. Been sitting at my office for the past eighteen years afraid of losing my job."
"Mr. Wayne I'm so sorry. I've call security." Sarah said blocking Seymour.
"It's alright Sarah. Mr. Grey now's not really the time…"
"Oh yeah. Gonna intimidate me right?! Well if you think for one second I'm just going to crawl back to my desk then you'd be wrong. CAUSE I QUIT!" He said throwing everything he had on the floor and stormed off. "But before I go there's just one thing I need to do." He went over to Sarah and grabbed her forcing her to kiss him. Luckily security had finally arrived and pulling Seymour off her and dragging him away. "Don't forget about me honey. I'm in the phone book." Bruce then saw something sticking out of Mr. Gray's wallet. He pulled out a business card advertising a product called never fear. He quickly put it in his pocket before Sarah could notice.
"Oh Mr. Wayne I'm so sorry that happened. I don't know what got into him."
"It's really alright Sarah. Are you alright."
"I'll be fine. Dickie are you okay? You seemed spooked."
"I'm okay Miss Sarah. Just a little nervous."
"Good, now I should return to my desk. Call me if you need anything."
"I will. Thank you Sarah."
"You're welcome." She said and went back to her desk.
"What the heck was that all about?"
"I'm not sure but I'm going to find out tonight."
"Yes! More detective work."
"Not this time Tim. I'm going alone."
"What? But I'm your partner."
"I'm going undercover. How awkward would it look for someone to bring an eleven year old boy with them?"
"I guess. Then what am I supposed to do? Babysit?"
"Great idea." Bruce said making Tim mad.
Break*Break*Break
"It paralysis us, keeps us from getting what we want and experiencing life to the fullest. Now, how many of you want to banish it from your life? To do anything life brings at you without being afraid? To abandon it and get rid of the one emotion getting in the way; fear." People started clapping and cheering about the man on stage giving his speech. None of the people in the audience noticed a man that had a mustache and shades slip into the back room. In the back was a meeting area and a cabinet no doubt hiding the 'Never Fear' chemical. The man tried to pick the lock but before he could open the door, something hit him in the back of head making him fall unconscious.
It would be a few hours before the man came to once again. He was in some kind of zoo cage with a large fence. He tried to climb out but a large alligator scared him and made him back up in fear.
"Terrifying aren't they?" A voice asked.
"What's going on?"
"That's what I like to know. Who are you and why were you snooping around?" The man with a rope on his neck asked. The man knew it was Scarecrow but he wasn't supposed to know that.
"Take it easy man. I was just trying to make a few bucks on the street. I got a wife and kids to feed at home you see. I wasn't trying to move in on your operation or anything."
"A thief eh? I thought as much." Scarecrow said pointing the gun at him.
"Hey be cool." He said and Scarecrow shot at him only it wasn't a bullet. It was a dose of his 'Never Fear' gas. The man coughed and coughed until the gas was gone. He now went up to the gators once more but this time not moving when they came up.
"Not so frightening now are they? Come on and get me tough guy?" Scarecrow asked and slipped back into the shadows. The man dove right into the gator cage only to get taken down by an alligator. The next thing that happened was blood spilling in the water. "Welcome to the food chain." Scarecrow said and went back into the shadows. After he was gone Bruce Wayne came back up with his disguised completely gone. He then proceeded to walk back to the manor ready to put on his other suit as the one he was wearing was too wet and tight.
Back at the manor was Alfred dusting away as usual, Tim sitting on the sofa watching T.V, and Dick laying on Tim's lap with his eyes dropping,
"What's taking him?" Tim asked Alfred. "Dickie won't even go to sleep until he comes home."
"Could be any number of things. Investigations require time and…" Alfred was about to finish when Bruce barged in the door looking angry. Dick immediately sat up about to get up and hug his foster father.
"Suit up and get in the plane you two."
"Wait?! Me too?! Yes!" Dick shouted.
"Hold on there. Are you serious right now?" Tim asked holding his brother back from going to the cave and change.
"You heard me."
"Are you sure that's wise sir? He still isn't properly trained."
"He's more than ready." Bruce said while positioning the clock at 10:52 which opened up the cave entrance. "Well?" Dick ran out of Tim's grasp and went down to put on his costume followed by a nervous Tim and Alfred.
"I don't like this one bit Alfred."
"As do I sir but there's no stopping Master Bruce once his mind is made up. Just please be very careful and watch out for him."
"You don't have to tell me." Tim said and went to get his costume on. Five minutes later the three were in the plane taking off.
"Oh my gosh this is so cool!" Dick said sitting next to Tim now Robin in the back seat.
"So are you gonna tell me what's going on or what?"
"It's the Scarecrow. He created a gas that takes away people's fear."
"No fear? Sweet!"
"The man on the ledge last night and the one in my office, imagine a whole city like that."
"I see your point." Robin said and Batman was suddenly flying towards an all glass building. "Hey!" Robin shouted and Batman missed the building by centimeters. He then proceeded to keep flying dangerously close to buildings, planes, and even cars.
"Whoa…uh that was fun?" Dick asked confused.
"So that gas that takes away people's fear. By any chance did you breathe it?"
"Yes, but I can handle it." Batman said and continued to fly dangerously.
Break*Break*Break
"Maybe you should stay here." Robin told Dick.
"What? But it's my first night out I can't just sit behind. I gotta show Batman what I can do."
"I don't think you're ready to be out here yet. You're only six."
"I'm six and a half almost seven."
"Oh my bad, I forgot about the half. Still…"
"Let's go!" Batman shouted at the two. The three then made their way to the building where the fear gas was earlier. "The gas canisters are in here." Batman said opening the door to see all the gas containers were gone.
"Here today, gone tonight." The seller from earlier said while his henchmen pointed guns at the trio. "If I were you I wouldn't move."
"Well you're not me." Batman said and walked over towards them without a single hesitation.
"Batman!" Robin said and one man started shooting but Batman dodged out of the way. He wasn't even trying to get them out of the men's hands.
"Why isn't he stopping them?" Dick whispered.
"I don't know." Robin said and got out a baterang to knock the guns out of their hands. Batman took care of knocking out the others except the last two.
"Shoot him!" The seller said but the guy started running away. "Hey! Get back here right now!" He said and started running too but Batman used his grapple to pull him back.
"Where's the gas?!"
"Go ahead, throw me in jail but you won't get a word from me."
"Who said anything about jail?" Batman said and started dragging him to the window.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Dick asked.
"Be quiet!" Batman said harshly making Dick flinch. Batman then threw the man out the window hanging by his feet and started slowly cutting the line. "You didn't answer my question."
"I-I can't! He'll kill me."
"Death is death. Does it matter who administers it?" Batman said. Dick and Robin where shocked by what Batman had just said. This was Batman, the man who forbid any kind of guns on his team and the number one rule was under no circumstances are you to kill a soul no matter how bad.
"You're not really gonna…"
"No! Please stop!"
"My question. Now!"
"He took the gas to the 72nd street subway station."
"Why?"
"He was gonna fill the tunnels with it."
"Just in time for rush hour." Batman said leaving the criminal hanging by a thread literately.
"We're not gonna leave him here are we? He'll die from that fall." Dick asked but no sooner did the line finally break and the man screamed in fear. Robin immediately grabbed the rope and with all his strength pulled him up.
"Thanks kid. Now can you let me go?"
"Not quite." Robin said before slamming his head on ground making him unconscious. After handcuffing him, the two raced after Batman. "Hold on. We can't go with Batman tonight."
"Why?"
"Because he's out of control. You saw what he almost did. Killing is rule number one in his book. That gas is affecting him more then he thinks."
"So now what?"
"You'll see." Robin said pulling out his grapple. The next thing Batman knew was he was on the ground tied up. He turned around to face his own partner. Robin then went over to take his utility belt off.
"This isn't the time for games. Now untie me!"
"No! You're out of control. That gas is affecting you more than you think."
"You don't know what you're talking about. I told you I could handle it!"
"Oh yeah? You're not even afraid to kill. I'm going after Scarecrow and we'll be back for you later."
"Robin wait. It's hard for me to say this but you're right; I was out of control."
"I did what I had to."
"Let me help you. I know him better then you two do."
"But…"
"Trust me. You'll be the boss on this one." Dick started to go over to untie Batman but Robin grabbed his shoulder holding him back.
"You almost had me. Come on kid let's go."
"Untie me right now you little punk. Now!"
"Don't listen to him. He's not thinking straight and doesn't mean anything by it. As soon as we get the antidote he'll be good again." Robin told his brother.
"I hope so. I don't like the mean Batman."
"Me neither. You know kid we never got to discussing names yet not that you'll need it soon but just for backup."
"Why can't I be Robin?"
"Cause I'm Robin now. Unless you want baby Robin or something."
"I'm not a baby!"
"Didn't think so. Well what do you think?"
"I don't know. Little Robin, Redder Robin, or…Nightwing."
"Nightwing? That's pretty cool."
"Yeah, I'll be Nightwing until I'm old enough to be Robin."
"Fine but I'm not planning on retiring anything soon." Once the two made it to the subway station, Robin told Nightwing to hang out back and make sure none of the criminals got away or left early. Nightwing sighed but agreed. Meanwhile Robin snuck onto the subway train where Scarecrow was recording a message for the mayor. Once he held up an inhaler which had the antidote, Robin made his move but didn't get very far before a henchmen apprehended him.
"What now?"
"Leave before his partner shows up." Scarecrow said and that's just what they did. As they left Nightwing saw this and was about to run after the train when Batman showed up.
"Let's go. Quickly."
"But…"
"It's okay. I won't cross the line I promise." He said and carried Dick on his back while they ran after the subway car. When they were inside, Batman set Dick down and quietly snuck down the car. The two guards that were there tried to stop him but Batman threw them off the train. Now all that was left was Scarecrow. Batman went up to him and started choking him.
"Don't do it!" Robin shouted but Batman didn't listen and squeezed harder. Luckily (or is it unluckily) Scarecrow grabbed his staff pushing Batman off him. While that was going on the subway tracks had ended and the train was going off the tracks towards a large cliff.
"Stop it. You'll have us killed." Scarecrow pleaded.
"You're not trying to scare me are you?" Batman asked and the two kept fighting. Meanwhile Nightwing had caught up with Robin who had just karate chopped the chain around the pole he was tied to.
"Oww that hurt." Robin said and ran towards Batman who was choking Scarecrow again. "You can't do this!"
"Watch me." Batman said hitting him making him fall backwards.
"Kid! Get the antidote." Robin told Nightwing and he did just that going up to Batman and releasing the antidote into his mouth. Batman coughed and finally realized what he was doing and released Scarecrow before he killed him. That's when Batman tried to stop the train as fast as he could.
"I can't get it to stop. Take your brother and jump."
"What about Scarecrow?"
"I deal with him." He answered and Robin gave him a look. "I'll get him off the train." Robin nodded and opened the door telling Dick to roll once he jumped.
"Ready? 1…2…3, jump!" Robin shouted and the two jumped off the train rolling until they were alright to stop with Batman and Scarecrow following close behind just as the train fell over the cliff and exploded. (Why, I have no idea?)
"You okay kid?" Robin asked panting and Nightwing nodded. The three got up and started walking out of the subway dragging Scarecrow just as the sun was starting to rise.
"So…last night when I tied you up. I didn't mean to…"
"Don't apologize. You were right."
"Yeah but, it was a little scary."
"A little fear is a good thing. It sets boundaries for being safe and keeping others safe." Batman said and Robin and Nightwing smiled.
"Yeah so…can I do this again tonight?" Nightwing asked.
"No!" Robin and Batman said.
"Was worth a shot."
There we go on another Timmy/Dickie short. The next chapter is going to be one I made up involving Mr. Freeze so it should be interesting. Hope you guys are enjoying everything.
