-Minor spoilers for the Kyoshi novels ahead
"And that is how we got out alive!" Mayumi finished recounting the battle against the four bandits. The girls were surprised by how detailed the Kyoshi warrior was able to remember the fight. It's as if they are there themselves, witnessing the entire event from start to finish. Each time the story changes momentum, from Satchiko almost being killed to the Khan shrugging off Huo's fire attack by using air as a barrier, it always managed to astound Sarangerel and the other girls. It aroused their interest, making them listening intently to every single word Mayumi said.
"How terrifying," a girl commented meekly. "If your little sister haven't bitten the hand of that water bender, I don't think Khiimori would be the only one in critical health. I don't think we would even be in the mood to celebrate tonight's feast."
The girls all grew silent. They all imagined the alternative scenario where Satchiko hadn't stopped Shui from achieving her devious act. Ganbaatar and the other warriors would have been all dead, for no normal human can live after having their necks snapped by blood bending.
Sarangerel poured a bit of tea for herself, trying to not overthink anything. "Thank you for telling all of us this," she said with sigh. "But I do have some questions, about that one named Feng. Shui was killed by our Khan, Tu fall off the cliff and died, and their leader Huo has been captured by our people. What has become of that air-bender rogue?"
The other girls around the table are just as eager to know, but fortunately Mayumi does not have the answer. Feng already disappeared, and no one even knows where he went. The last person who saw her was Huo. Judging by the interactions between the bandits, Mayumi assumed that the four of them are close friends who looked out for one another. But would Feng very abandon his companions and fled just to save his own skin?
"I don't care about what happens to Feng," Satchiko stated in a somber mood. "I want to know who these people are, and why they wanted to kidnap us. They have this person they look up to highly. A 'master', I think. Something tells me there is more to these bandits, I feel they are planning something, something big." She then looked into the tea inside her cup, there lies her natural reflection. The signature brown hair and complexion given to her from birth made Satchiko looked a bit like her mother. She is pretty, but she never cares much about her looks. She felt perhaps this brown hair may have been a dead giveaway for those who wanted to kidnap her and Mayumi. Whatever the goal of this master wanted to accomplish, she must not allow it to harm the wellbeing of Kyoshi island, her true home.
"Whatever they want, you are safe here with us." Sarangerel reassured the Kyoshi warriors. "Our people have dealt with similar people who also have ill intentions towards us."
"Yeah like those poachers!" A teenage girl at the table squeaked. "If it wasn't for the warriors killing them in time, those thieves would have stolen some of the bisons when they are grazing."
"Yes," Sarangerel said. "But we must remember, poachers are not our biggest problems. They are only after the bisons, but there are also people that only wish for the destruction of our entire people." There was a hint of seriousness in her voice, something Mayumi can detect. From this one sentence, the Kyoshi warriors can conclude that certain people out there are hostile to the airbending people here.
"Sarangerel, don't mention them in front of the guests!" Another girl pleaded. "Let's enjoy this evening and not think too much about the bad things around the world!"
"My apologies," Sarangerel formally replied. Her mood wasn't as delightful as before. Satchiko knew she must be thinking something. Sarangerel can't hide it, but no one will not question her for now.
When Satchiko proceeded to grab some food on the table, she noticed that Batu is looking at where the Khan is sitting. She turned her head and watched, as Khenbish is conversing with their leader.
Khenbish's voice is so quiet, that it was inaudible to her. He must have done it intentionally, Satchiko deducted. Judging the body language of that nomad, it tells her that he doesn't want everyone else in the tent to know what they are saying. As Satchiko took a bite out of a piece of a dumpling, she stopped as she saw the Khan suddenly changed his facial expression. He looked extremely mean, like he would kill anyone should he wished to. It was the opposite to his mood from before, luckily it was not directed at anyone here.
"Pssst! Batu." Satchiko whispered to the boy, successfully getting his attention. "Do you know what your dad and your chief is talking about?" The girl asked, referring the Khan as a chief out of her own convenience.
"I don't know, but I don't think it's good." Batu nervously replied. Something must be going on, something so unpleasant that it would cause even the Khan to be irritated.
...
"Are you sure it is them, Khenbish?" The Khan desperately asked Khenbish, trying to hide his annoyance at this unexpected news. They are having their most important celebration, it was all going running smoothly so far. They even have two guests participating it. Satchiko and Mayumi are invited because they have earned their trust by protecting Batu. Thus the Khan welcomed them with open arms and the upmost hospitality. But if there is one thing the Khan detest the most, is having uninvited guests barging into the camp. To him, they are like rats who trespassed their homes, disrespecting their authority through their ignorant act.
"I swear upon my soul I saw them," Khenbish replied with a heavy sigh. "There is no doubt, that they are the ones riding that sky bison. What are your orders sir?"
The Khan deepened his grimace. He released a heavy breath, stiffened his body's fiber. Those people could not have arrived at a worst time possible. If it wasn't for Satchiko and Mayumi being here, he wouldn't be concealing his rage like he would now.
"My Khan!" A guard sentry shouted from the front entrance of the tent. All eyes were on him as the man entered the tent in a hurried manner. He swiftly arrived in front of the Khan, as if he is about to report something urgent.
"What news you bring my warrior?" The Khan inquired in a formal tone. Even though he knew what message this man might bring, he still wished that it was something unrelated.
"Uninvited guests," the guard slowly said with heavy breath, and a nervous facial expression. He felt uncomfortable just by doing this, and bowed slightly to the Khan.
A firm fist formed on the Khan. Khenbish looked back at his leader, seeking for answers. "What should we do?" He carefully asked.
The leader, so fearless on the battlefield, looked lost. Not sure what to do. His body slumped backwards, disappointed at the news. This is the same man who appeared invincible on the battlefield, yet Satchiko felt he is at a complete disorientation.
"They are not welcomed," the Khan said to the guard in a dark tone. His hands gripped onto the arms of the chair even harder. If it wasn't for the throne's solid materials, it would have cracked under sheer force. "I am not in a mood to entertain those treacherous thieves, send them away, don't let them into the camp!"
The guard trembled a little, his body starts to shake, which did not go unnoticed by Khenbish and the Khan.
"What's wrong?" The Khan demanded with a confused look. Did he said something that made this man scared? The two guards besides his throne is also curious.
"They are already in the camp, they landed their bison near ours. But I can get rid of them if needed!" The guard appeased quickly, hoping the Khan is not angered by his failure.
Luckily, the Khan wasn't in rage, he simply maintained his stoic expression and stared at the tent's entrance.
Khenbish shuffled closer, and speak candidly on the matter. "Maybe we should just tell them to leave, whatever business they have, let's reserve it for another occasion. I'm sure we can negotiate with them." He wording was reasonably constructed. Even the two other guards can understand the logic behind his sentence. However, the three of them did not receive the affirmation like they have anticipated.
The Khan straightened his back on his seat, and strengthened his posture. He deeply inhaled the air, and released them.
"Send them in," he commanded, eyes darkened. A hint of anger was in his voice, which terrified them all. "They have grown very bold I see."
The Khan would never allow those people to intrude this celebration. Yet, here he is, actually allowing them to enter. But even a meat-headed girl like Satchiko can tell this is not a polite reception.
"Uninvited guests are still guests, are they not?" The Khan casually stated, causing Khenbish and the guards to feel uneasy about this. "Let them present themselves right here, in front of the entire clan and our two guests, and we shall see what matter is so important as to disturb this wonderful evening!" It's obvious, the Khan has ulterior motives. "Send them in!!!" The Khan shouted violently, his air-bender voice boomed across the entire tent, even the folks outside can hear him clearly. Satchiko and Mayumi felt a huge air current rushed past them, forcing them to cover their faces with their hands. The wind was intense, and the voice of the Khan traveled across the room, making the tent open its flip outwards as the air traveled out the entrance.
"What's going on?" Batu's head spun around quickly, looking towards the entrance. The girls also did the same. Like everyone else, they dropped their activities and watched with suspense as who is able to enter.
Mayumi and Satchiko remain still, they just got here, and something unexpected are already beginning to happen. They can only wish they are not the target this time. Hopefully.
...
Footsteps of humans quietly strolled into the camp. They went past plenty of vacant tents and bisons that are sleeping near the fields. Occasionally, few bisons would watch them secretly, curious who these strangers are. They don't look like the dangerous type, but their concealed identity kept the bisons on guards against these possible intruders.
The humans soon arrived at the center, they heard laugher of those who are still drinking. The smell of dead animal meat was strong and permeated throughout the air. It entered their noses uncomfortably, but they endured, and marched into the small area under the unpleasant scent.
The guards in the area remained stationary as they noticed them. They readied their spears in case these people try anything funny. But thankfully, they have been ordered to stand down.
"W-Wait, who are you four?" Saran held her breathe as four hooded figures entered into the site, she was shocked and didn't expect people like these would show up now. She stopped stirring the pot of soup just to gaze at the mysterious newcomers.
They all wore long orange colored robes, with one of them wearing a necklace consists of wooden beads and air-bending symbol discs. They strolled forward, gradually drawing the attention of everyone near the bonfire.
The laughters and laid back attitude of everyone died down as they too are in shock of this group's arrival. A few of the clansman are too drunk to very react, but most are cautious, and their hands subconsciously went to their weapons.
Contemptuous looks rose in the ranks of people, one mother shielded her child protectively, fearing the kid might be taken away. Whether or not this fear is born out of irrationality, the mother is aware that her child is an air-bender. From her perspective, these people would and can take her child away. They do that all the time, they did it before and they certainly will do it again.
Ganbaatar eyed darkly at the four as they entered the tent, he poured some fermented milk down his throat bitterly as he continued to guard the sack besides him. He then looked at the bag, and his face crossed even more. Gulping the remaining of his drink, he eagerly positioned his hand around his saber, ready to strike down a foe when needed. After one last look at the four, he opened the sack, and pulled out the object within. He might need it later on, he smiled.
...
"What are they doing here?" Someone in the tent asked, almost accusatory. "Since when were you invited?"
"Yeah!"
The mere presence of the four stirred immediate reaction from everyone within the tent. They all started to whisper to one another, which the four paid no heed to it. No one touched the food. They knew what is about to happen might not be pretty.
Batu's eyes remain wide as memories of the past started to flow into him. Sarangerel managed to restrain him before he can jump out of his seat , preventing him from causing any more trouble.
"Let me get them!" Batu requested to Sarangerel. But the older sister insisted his decision would be too impulsive. She knew the boy might be putting himself in danger.
"Mayumi, who are they?" Satchiko nervously whispered. Just who in the world are these mysterious people in robes? So far, most people she met wore green, a common color on this continent. But orange? This is new for her.
"Air nomads. They are the people who bend air. I have seen them in books. They dwell in those Air temples you mentioned during that one night. Remember sister?" Mayumi simply said. There can be no doubt about it. If it wasn't for them spotting a bison in the last town, it would take her longer to realize who they are.
Satchiko swallowed her throat, she knew Batu is not going to like this. She just noticed the boy's sudden scowl on his face, disgusted at these air-nomads entering his home. Regardless, she sipped at her tea, and quickly stuffed some meat on skewers into her small mouth. She hope the her anxiety can be suppressed a bit. "Mmm, yummy." She knew this is the wrong time to say that.
The mighty Khan rose from his seat. "You imbeciles sure do got the nerves of a Lion Turtle, paying us an unexpected visit on the one day we wish no uninvited guests would disturb us." He intimidated, brandishing his saber at the four in a threatening manner. This is definitely not a good start.
Two fire torch stands are now lit on two sides of the throne, adding to the already plenty numbers of other fire torches in the tent. Everyone watched carefully as the Khan furthered his taunt. "Thieves, liars, hypocrites! Coming to the wrong place and wrong time!" The Khan paused for a bit to inhale some air, before continuing his insulting speech at the air-nomads. "Yet I can still feel that same sense of superiority from you four blue arrows. That feeling that you are always in the right. You and your condescending tongues." The Khan breathed heavily, almost exhausted from his anger. "It's as if you can do no wrong no matter what mess you two faced monks conjure, isn't that right? Tenzin, son of Aang!"
Satchiko widened with shock. She didn't know why the Khan is suddenly dispensing such outrage. She remembered that one of Kyoshi's reincarnation saved their village during the Hundred Years War. Stories even circulate that Aang himself managed to conjure a projection of Kyoshi's spirit. And one of the figures is apparently his son?
"I do not believe my answers will satisfy your question, but I do think I can still convince you to revaluate your own philosophies and way of life." A wise voice of an old man replied. No signs of fear was detected from the sentence, it's as if he took his time to formulate that answer. When he finished, the figure removed the hood, revealing a bald old man with white long beard that is sharp and well trimmed. The necklace he wore signifies his higher status when compared to the other three.
She noticed the large arrow on the man's forehead. It's identical as ones possessed by the air benders in the camp, except it has the color blue.
These are the air-nomads? Satchiko thought. It's fascinating to saw one in flesh. Who would have thought they would look so...normal.
They don't look like the deceitful people Batu's have hyped them up as. In fact, she is fascinated by them. Perhaps that is also due to how little she knew about real Air-Nomad culture, and she knew Mayumi would love to learn more.
"It's been a while Temujin," Tenzin greeted, trying to be as politely as possible. Although from the looks of it, the man does not appear to be ready to compromise anything here. It's obvious that these two groups of air-benders don't see eye to eye on many things.
Temujin, so that is the Khan's real name...
"You dare speak of his personal name!" Barked a guard besides the Khan. He wanted to use his spear to punish this insolent old man, but was stopped. The Khan's waved his hand, ordering him to stand down, for now.
"Indeed, it appears that time has not been kind to you." The Khan's remarked, noticing the thin body and extra winkles on the old man's face. The Khan doesn't care if it would offend the senior Air-nomad. But Tenzin is not someone who would be offended by such trivial insult. "If you have eaten some better food, maybe your body wouldn't be as slim as you are now!"
"Our bodies are our temples," Tenzin smartly countered. "Filling it with nothing but what is unhealthy would only defile its functions." While Tenzin does look thin, it is healthier than just consuming meat for every meal. Since air-nomad culture is a pacifist one, their philosophy taught them to refrain from killing a living being. Thus their food would inevitably exclude meat of all forms.
"So you are telling us to eat grass, like what we were doing a long time ago?" Temujin smeared. "Your vegetarian diet would make a warrior weak. How can one swing a sword or wear a armor by eating food that is only barely keeping him alive! What are we? Cattle? How are we going to kill those who wish harm upon us if my warriors march on an empty stomach. You know we have long abandoned the sedentary life!"
"A valid point," Tenzin remarked. "Your way of life demands you to hunt and gather resources from the wilds." This reaction captured the attention of the Khan, who didn't expect the air-nomad would actually agree with him.
However, what Tenzin said next was not as understanding and tolerant, in fact it was much more condemning. "But even so, as air-benders, you shouldn't indulge yourself in killing!" He stated, denouncing the air-benders under the Khan. "That is a perversion of what it means to be an air-nomad! It is disgraceful to the culture and air-bending itself! You are not true air-nomads!" His words drew the immediate ire of everyone, except for Satchiko and Mayumi, who observed the situation carefully. Those two are like onlookers, caught between a scuffle between two angry parties.
The tent erupted with shouts and cries, many begin to uproar indignantly at Tenzin. Some even unsheathed their sabers, as if they wanted to slice Tenzin into pieces.
"You think you can claim supremacy over us!"
"Do you people even know what it's like to be living on the Earth Kingdom!"
"Outlaws never showed mercy to us! We will not sure mercy to them!"
"We were abandoned by you, where were you when our town was littered with the blood of our people!"
"Enough!" The Khan's lifted his saber, forcing everyone to immediately to be quiet and behave themselves.
His attention turned to Tenzin, who still did not break his line of site with the Khan. In fact, the old man is surprisingly holding on very well.
"What makes you think, your ways are better than ours? Son of Aang?" Temujin slowly questioned, his voice was a bit coarse and dry, possibly from his shout. "You expect us to walk towards the path of peace, even though it was your people that failed us when we needed you the most. How can we make peace in a world that only serves the strong? Tell me Tenzin, during the height of the bandit raids all those years ago, do you still remember why I seek help from you?"
Tenzin didn't respond, the old man is pondering. Satchiko and Mayumi can notice the struggle through the man's sudden faltering expression. It's as if he is forced to answered the Khan's question, or else it would incite even more rage from this tribe.
"Your hometown was under siege, you and your people have nowhere to go." Tenzin slowly said, causing one of the hooded figures to look at him. It was a woman, who accompanied Tenzin along two other unknown air-nomad.
"Go on, don't leave out any details." The Khan ordered, taking another bowl of fermented milk and drink it leisurely. He wanted to see what Tenzin would do when confronted with this sensitive question. Whatever issue the two parties are fighting over, it's going to be revealed now.
Tenzin complied, unwillingly, what he said not only reignites painful memories of everyone else. He sighed with a sad expression. "The governor of your state refused to send you reinforcements, the elected mayor of your town fled with all the army, and the inhabitants composed of many elderly and children cannot escape, so you decided to take over your hometown's defense in hopes you can fend the bandits off. But you knew you can't do it by yourself, so you requested the help of Air-nation."
"I did," the Khan said, trying to not compliment Tenzin's remarkable memory. "That mayor ran with all his possessions, leaving the expendable citizens to slow down the raiders. I could have escaped myself and leave the people to their own fate, yet I stayed, fighting the invaders outside the walls with only my sword and bow." The Khan looked at his saber, it was the primary weapon he used to fight before he can even control his air-bending. "But as you know I couldn't hold out the raiders forever, I also grew desperate, and tried everything, including asking for the help of you of all people. The Khan then eyed Tenzin and his three associates darkly, as if a judge is looking down on a criminal. "And what was the help you sent me again? What was the number of reinforcement? Two?"
"Two hundred?" A voice of a girl wondered. The Khan turned to the origin of the voice, Satchiko. Sensing trouble, Mayumi went into a panic and used her hand to cover her sister's mouth.
"Shush! Don't say anything!" Mayumi quickly quietened her sister. The would be an absolute nightmare to clean up if Satchiko successfully invited the Khan's rage. No one wants to fight the man on anything.
There was a moment of silence, as the whole tribe is trying to process Satchiko's number. This suspense was broken when a loud laughter thundered across the tent. It was a little out of place, but the Khan stopped himself and explained to the naive Kyoshi warrior.
"Two hundred! Ha! If you thought that was what they haven given us during the town's defense my child, then we wouldn't even be having this conversation!" The Khan directed, not to Satchiko, but at the band of air-nomads before him. "But do you want to know the true number they have given us little girl?" The Khan asked Satchiko, who knew this is a rhetorical questions.
"Two, only two." Mayumi speedily answered in Satchiko's place. It is an effort by Mayumi, to produce what the Khan would love to hear.
Tenzin avoided looking at the Kyoshi warriors when they looked at his directions. This whole lampooning from the Khan has definitely lowered their perception towards the air-nomads.
"Precisely, they sent us the same two youngsters to fight an army of ruthless pillagers." The Khan smirked. "You expect our town to defend against five thousand well armed foes with two of your teenage air-nomads, even though the defenders within never even wielded a dagger?" The Khan's said, almost incredulous at the incompetent decision making of sending only two idiots to help them. "Look at these warriors around me, back then they were only teens who never thought they would have to fight mechatanks just to keep themselves and their family alive! When the wall was finally breached, everyone here are the lucky ones who can escape! Of course, every family in this camp lost most of their loved ones. This warrior right beside me is the last member of his family!"
Tenzin cannot help but look at the same guard that he just lashed out at him. Underneath the helmet, was a clear incision wound that has long healed. It's likely he had narrowly avoided a projectile thrown by a mechatank. However, the pain of losing all his family members would surely be a scar that will never heal.
"The worst part of all of this," the Khan emphasized. "Is that the two idiots that you sent to us didn't even do anything helpful!" The Khan's raised his voice, ranting about the supposedly 'help' provided. "All they are concerned is how to escort the air-benders in our town right away! Not even considering the fact that countless families and friends will be left behind!"
Satchiko and Mayumi noticed the many affirmative nods from those around her. Batu's scowl is now even more menacing, there are nothing but hatred crawling over his face. Even the two Kyoshi warriors fulfilled their promise to Saran, they knew the boy is now provoked. All there is to the little boy which they thought have an innocent heart, is only filled with hatred. It's disturbing. After all, such personality from a eleven years old boy is...very unfortunate.
"The air-benders assisting the Earth Kingdom has been stretched thin," Tenzin defended. "We cannot possibly cover every town and village, all of them need our help! The United Republic has provided aid to the many states of the Earth Republic, but even so, my airbenders simply cannot cover the whole continent, as we must also maintain patrol over countless other towns and villages."
"Your help?" The Khan's said in a mockery tone, he drink some more fermented milk before continuing. "All you air-nomads have done on the Earth Kingdom is to collect as much air-bender as you can! What help did you provide, when even you know that your monks cannot stand against the bandits that ravaged the land!"
The Khan looked at Satchiko and Mayumi, who are now being as silent as possible. They didn't want to be included into this debate, but clearly the Khan felt this is a good opportunity to praise their merits earlier today. All to badmouth the uninvited guest.
"Those two," the Khan addressed the Kyoshi warriors with a voice of praise. "Our two esteemed guests, both of whom are non-benders performed excellently today! Unlike your nitwitted followers, they actually helped our people by risking their lives in saving our clansmen! So far they have helped us way more than what your entire air-nation can provide! What my people need are not empty promises, we need those we can trust."
Satchiko have obviously not expected both her and Mayumi would be dragged into the spotlight. Even though she herself is actually an Earth bender, they kept their silent, as correcting the Khan now would be inappropriate at this moment.
The crowd clapped their hands loudly, commemorating the heroic actions of the two Kyoshi warriors. Satchiko's face remained neutral throughout all of this, as she doesn't want to appear too receptive to the acknowledgment of Batu's people. She hopes that by doing so, she would avoid any tension with the four air-nomads before her. While everyone is still clapping, Satchiko noticed that one of the air-nomads, possibly a woman, is observing her. She pretends not to notice, but she can feel that she is being watched.
"So Tenzin, compare to what those two have done, what help did the United Republic gave to the nation which it has divided." The Khan's challenged, making no room for the senior monk to form a rebuttal. "Those mecha tanks, cars and even other obvious equipment like the bi-planes. I wonder how did those cutthroats managed to get their hands on so many of these technology? Surely, you wouldn't be that ignorant. Surely, a man of your intelligent would at least have some doubt about that colony created by Aang and Zuko."
Tenzin was speechless again, he is cornered. One wrong step and they are done for here. The formation of the United Republic on Earth Kingdom soil is very controversial. Many across the continent today are still dissatisfied that a land that was once theirs are permanently taken away. It seems that Temujin is also disgruntled when the thieves does not accept the traditional owners.
"Ganbaatar!" The Khan shouted in an authoritative tone. Everyone watched as the warrior marched into the tent, causing everyone to look at his way.
Ganbaatar carried a sack, in which there is something vital to this conversation. Satchiko observef as the object was revealed. She managed to contain her shock well."
Satchiko wondered. She has seen it before during the last pirate raid, her fellow Kyoshi warriors used the same thing in capturing the raiders.
"Mayumi, isn't that-"
"It is," Mayumi quietly confirmed.
Ganbaatar threw the object in front of the four air-nomads for them to see. Tenzin kneeled down to take a better look.
"See for yourself, bald heads!" Ganbaatar lashed out. In front of these people, he had no interest in being cordial. To him, they are the no better than the bandits, untrustworthy and deceitful. He backed away a little, allowing more distance between him and the four uninvited guests.
The object was examined, it was no doubt the net gun used by Feng. This piece of equipment must have been scavenged by the warriors after they defeated Huo.
"This was found after our battle with the bandits that attacked our kin. Now, Tenzin, what can you tell me about the bandit's net gun." The Khan's interrogated, knowing there isn't much tangible interpretation Tenzin can work with.
The net gun is well made, it consists of metal that is manufactured into the efficient tool it is now. From the looks of it, it is produced in a factory. A notable feature of the high quality net gun is the peculiar symbol painted onto the grip. It looked like a piece of metal gear cut into half, and placed it into a circle along with two other oddly drawn shape.
"Well?" The Khan demanded, a bit impatient at Tenzin's silence. "I am waiting."
Before Tenzin can open his mouth, another person already answered.
"That symbol," Mayumi said without hesitation, she stood from the rug, drawing everyone's attention. "Is none other than the trademark of Future Industries. They are a company in the United Republic that manufactures automobiles and weapons."
The room descended into murmuration. This could mean anything. The bandits possessing a device produced by a company in the United Republic brings great contention here.
"The United Republic," the Khan begin admonishingly. "Told the Earth Kingdom that itself is the savior and the one that holds all the solution." Taking one heavy step forward, he continued his insinuating message about the very nation he perceived. "All the sheep of this land believed those fancy words, and they willingly allowed a mere colony to divide the Kingdom into separate states, so that cooperations can sell weapons and profit from the bloodshed. The civil strife across this fractured land on which we are standing on, is the perfect market! My people are in the crossfire!"
The crowd chanted in agreement, to them, the United Republic is like a scourge. It is a colony, that meddles into the affairs of the very nation it arrogantly claims to not be part of.
"This Future industry net gun alone does not prove that is the case!" Tenzin mustered enough courage to counter argue the Khan's claim. "This piece of equipment has been distributed to many Earth state governments to keep the peace, it is completely reasonable that some of it might fallen into the hands of bandits."
It was a valid explanation, Satchiko thought to herself. It is impossible to maintain such equipment to the point where it cannot be stolen or looted by bandits and pirates. Judging by the effects conflict can have on the lives of the general people, it is likely that the armies of the many states is not doing a good job suppressing the bandit hordes. Which have resulted in the lost of equipment given by the United Republic as aid.
"So I guess you are saying that those war machines my people faced during the destruction of our town are just 'stolen' from the United Republic. Last time I checked, that madwoman named Kuvira did not have metal birds that fly, and certainly wouldn't distribute them to low lives that rob from innocents." Temujin does not sound convinced. Satchiko noticed a smirk derived from the Khan. Ge walked to weapon stands, not to put his saber back, but to collect something else, something Satchiko saw immediately after Shui's death. Her water bottle.
When Temujin retrieved the object, he showed it to everyone and threw it to Tenzin, who used airbending to catch it mid-air. He gravitated it towards him, and look at it the same way , but this time his eyes are widened with shock.
Satchiko stared at the water bottle, it is now that she noticed something on it that she wasn't able to detect earlier today.
There was a symbol, a strange one. It resembled a creature with strange patterns on its body as well as tendrils extended from the center. It doesn't have any eyes, only a small dot placed at the center of its 'head'.
"Where did you get this?" Tenzin asked, no longer as assertive as before. A sense of worry is visible on his face.
"I looted it from one of his sheep followers," the Khan said. Causing Tenzin into deep contemplation, he didn't know that the group that owns this bottle has so much influence here on the mainland.
The Kyoshi warriors didn't know what the two leaders are talking about, but before they can inquire, the Khan spoke.
"Those were not mere bandits who attacked our kin today, I certainly don't think their intention to kidnap those two ladies are as simple as ransom." Temujin stated, gripping his saber even harder. "This group of people, were the same ones that wiped out our people. Their philosophy preached the desire to eradicate every human in the world they deemed lacking in purity. By that, it is their belief that benders of all elements and the non-benders of the world should bare separate children. Our existence have been interpreted by them as impurities that must be exterminated, and let me remind you Tenzin, the moment they have enough power, they will come for Republic City next!"
Mayumi and Satchiko didn't blink when they heard this, they have no clue what Temujin is saying. They noticed that the faces of everyone else became even more solemn.
"This pack of beasts, the mortal enemy that threatened my people's existence." The Khan paused, wishing he never have to mention them in this very day. "The Acolytes of San Bao!."
The Khan didn't shout when he said it, he clearly felt uncomfortable by just saying the group's name. To them, it is a taboo to ever mention them, since too many people have lost their loved ones to the malevolent force.
The entire room is now silent as the very words echoed in everyone's ears, the place is so quiet that one can hear a pin drop if there is one. Satchiko became stunned, she felt she got drawn into a story that only occurs in story books. She looked to her sister, but noticed that Batu is in a weird position. He crawled himself into a ball, appearing like he wants to conserve every heat within him. Is he cold? No. But this boy must have been reminded of something vividly distressing.
The Khan sound tired, he sat down on the throne, resting his legs. "These people, they have your equipment, light and heavy. They ravage the Earth Kingdom to exercise their stupid belief of purity, and yet, you and the politicians in Republic city allowed them to spread their idea through leaflets and newspapers like the Equalist. What can I say? Am I very supposed to believe that the vision of our nation devised by the sovereign United Republic is good?" The Khan's then pointed to Batu, who is looking at the four air-nomads. "You see that young brave man over there? I think even he knows what is actually going on here, a child can sometimes be more candid than adults, if I do say so myself!"
Tenzin painfully turned to Batu. The boy's stare was cold, but he can sense the deep vengeance brewing in there. Everything about this feels so much complicated. If only things are simpler.
"Then, will you still at least accept our offer all those years ago?" Tenzin asked, making the Khan raising his eyebrows. "If you and your people would just allow us to amend our mistakes by enlightening you in following the ways of the true air-nomad culture, I'm sure you can find inner peace." Tenzin advised, his voice was soother and sympathetic, which was deliberately aimed to softened the Khan. As the leader of the air nation, he must be the one to take the initiative where others have failed. If he can bring this group of people under his wings, he can eliminate future tensions between the two airbending diaspora. "We can help you achieve spirituality that you otherwise cannot obtain in a life of conflict. Without spirituality, you and the rest of the air-benders here would be hindered from reaching your full potential. There is always a place for you in the new Air nation."
"No," the Khan's response crushed Tenzin's attempt. "I don't think the air-benders here wanted to be part of your shenanigans. You said the same thing to many people who knows how to bend air after somebody left the portal open. My people would never be safe if they remain stationary. You think you can protect them by concealing them in temples and hope those cultist would not find them?"
"The only way to protect air-benders is to teach them the traditions that would amplify their bending!" Tenzin argued. "Air-benders who are spirituality connected and well verse in the air-nomad culture can perform much better those who are not."
"So you saying we are not true air-nomads." The Khan said, his tone suggest that he is unimpressed with Tenzin's way of thinking. "It is true that more spiritual air-benders performed much better than those who are not. The disgraced air-nomad, Jesa, forsaken your people's teachings and culture, she chose to live a life of a filthy outlaw. For that crime alone, her spirit is tainted, and thereby weakening her powers." He leaned forward in his chair, almost looking down at the four. "Just like Zaheer, any air-bender can reach mastery if they know the culture and history front and back. But I think it is more about believing yourself to be doing the right thing, isn't that more accurate?"
Satchiko and Mayumi remembered the name Jesa. She was the mother of Kyoshi, an air-bending master turned into an outlaw. According to the stories pasted down from generations, the Kyoshi warriors remembered the tale that Kyoshi was abandoned when she was a child. It was after a series of events, after the passing of her parents, did she came to possess Jesa's war metal fans as well as the face paints that would go on to create the aesthetic foundation of a Kyoshi warrior. Many histories of their founder are vague and ambiguous. Who knows, maybe it was intentionally altered?
"Zaheer, do not represent the the air nation!" Tenzin hastily emphasized, not wanting to confuse Temujin. The air bending master is trying very hard to make the Khan see the world from his perspective, which isn't successful so far. "Zaheer's exceptional mastery may be attributed to his immense knowledge on air-nomad culture, but that does not excuse his criminal actions against the Avatar!"
"Then do we look like criminals?" The Khan questioned, putting a stop to Tenzin. He swung his saber around, and checked the blade's balance. "This blade I am holding has taken the lives of countless people, bandits or red lotus, I kill them all. But you have to admit, that sometimes the best way to save a life, is to take one! If I remember correctly, there was a Air-bender hundreds of years ago that have saved countless coastal villagers from an impending pirate raid. In exchange, he sacrificed his own spirituality to defend the helpless people. He destroyed a invading pirates, drowning them at sea. And what did the abbots in the temples did to award his heroism? Your people back them have dishonored his valiant actions, but it only proves that in some cases, action trumps foolish ideals! I suggest that my people and your monks should stay away from each other's business, and live peacefully without meddling in each other's affairs. We are simply too different, and the things we believe are like night and day. Whatever business you have with my people, I do recommend that you return in a later date. You may leave now."
"Absolutely not!" Tenzin fiercely refuted. "As air-nomads, we have a duty to-"
"You are air-nomads?" The Khan berated, standing up from his seat and pointed the saber at the four. "You monastery folks DARE arrogantly label yourselves with the word 'nomad' while WE tent dwellers have to live in this mess created by the last fool in the pointless cycle! Just because that we have material attachments to our loved ones does not mean you can just trample over our existence!" He roared loudly.
Satchiko isn't sure if the Khan is disagreeing with Tenzin's view on what it means to be an air-nomad, or just ranting about something else entirely. Whatever it is, she and Mayumi knew that it is best that they stay out of it.
With the assistance of the two guard besides the Khan, Khenbish retreated from his leader. He doesn't want to get hurt, especially if the Khan cause collateral damage while air-bending.
Temujin shifted his body language like a house owner that is about to force unwanted visitors out of his homes. There was a sudden surge in air pressure around him. Everyone can physically see the air violently conjuring from the Khan, who despite without moving, still generated strong currents.
Sarangerel placed the tea flowers in her pockets to prevent it from being blown away. Jargal, he simply placed a lid over the hot pot to preserve the turtle duck in case something fells into it.
"Wait! if you would just let me explain what we are here to do-" Tenzin was cut off as he felt wind following from the Khan blew his necklace and hit his face. The tent darkened as the fire on each torch were extinguished by the wind.
Suddenly sensing the strong power from Temujin's airbending, Tenzin was able to barely set up a barrier made of air to fend off this offense.
"Your presence are not needed!" The Khan shouted. "Out!" The Khan swung his saber, creating a ferocious air blast directed at the four.
The four air-nomads were able to narrowly neutralized the attack as they are protected by Tenzin's air barrier. The surrounding air knocked some people's plates and cups off the table, almost causing them to panic. They knew that if the Khan is using his full power, the entire ceiling could have been uplifted with ease.
Mayumi held her sister protectively, she used her hand to shield the face of Satchiko. She herself only closed her eyes to guard it from the air, preventing it from damaging her eyeballs.
As Batu and the other girls hold onto the small wooden table, Satchiko tried to open her eyes in the midst of air rushing to her. She saw the four air-nomads, signs of struggle is painted all over Tenzin's face. The old monk must be exhausting his energy to protect his three associates. The truth is, those four don't look like bad people. If only there is away for Temujin and the four air-nomads to resolve their issues peacefully.
One of the monks, presumably much younger, is supporting Tenzin as the man nearly fall over. As they continue to protect themselves from Temujin's wrath, one of them run out of the barrier.
"Jinora! No!" Tenzin yelled in disbelief.
The air-nomad named Jinora recklessly ventured out of Tenzin's barrier, and tried to approach the Khan.
Seeing this, Temujin was surprised by the reckless move. He is amazed that this person haven't been blown away by his repeated air blast. Before he can swing his sword and blast this person out, he heard her.
"We are not your enemy! We are not here to undermine your authority or way of life!" Jinora pleaded. Using only her hands to protect herself.
Satchiko can hear her despite the chaos within the tent, it was a voice of a woman. She quickly felt the air currents in the tent slowly calmed. Everyone else eventually felt a sense of relief as the Khan retracted his saber and paused his attack.
"Speak," Temujin coldly demanded. "I understand that your rude presence can be due to your ignorance of our way. However, you should know that even tent dwelling barbarians like us prefer people who announce themselves before coming here."
Jargal checked his hot pot, not caring that everyone else is focusing on the conversation between Temujin and Jinora. The turtle duck soup has thanksgiving been preserved!
Jinora revealed herself, she removed her hood and showed her face to everyone else. "We are sorry if we have interrupted something very important to you, and for that we are truly regretful. But I think our fault is the greatest when we couldn't provide enough help to your people at your most desperate need." Jinora was sincere, their were no hints of criticism towards Temujin and his people. For the record, she is not agreeing with the violent nature of these 'air nomads'.
"State your business then," the Khan said, allowing Jinora to further explain whatever endeavor they have. "I will decide whether if you are allowed to interact with my people, based on what you say."
Tenzin stopped maintaining his barrier, his body has taken a great toll after expending much of his energy. They are not here to quarrel with them, but simply seeking for their help in something much more important. Even bigger than the disagreement between the traditional air-nomads and this new interpretation of air-bending culture.
After Jinora received the clearance, she starts to speak her mind. The Khan turned around and grabbed another bowl of drink, he sat down, probably curious at what story Jinora would tell.
"As you know," Jinora carefully began. "The world is not in a good place. Tensions between nations and people are ever more increasing, and our world has gone for far too long without an Avatar."
The crowd narrowed their eyes, listening to every word of this woman. They listened intently to what she is saying, except for Batu, who reject to even be listening to them.
"What is she saying Mayumi?" Satchiko asked, like small child not sure what these adults are talking about. Now that she thought about it, she has grew up never knowing who the current Avatar is.
"I will tell you later, for now, we listen." Mayumi replied quietly, trying to keep the volume to a point that it wouldn't disturb the others.
"The last Avatar, Korra, has died and will reincarnate somewhere in the Earth Kingdom. And it is the duty of everyone to find him or her." Jinora's words ranged in Satchiko's ears. The young Kyoshi warrior has never been interested in the affairs of the world. She only cares about protecting the world she has ever known, which is Kyoshi island, from outside threats.
"So," the Khan causally replied while taking a sip at the bowl. "If your goal is to find the next Avatar, why did you come to us? I may be the Khan of my people, but even I do not know how we can help you. Unless..." He pondered, theorizing what these air-nomads are going to do.
Tenzin stepped in, and speak for his daughter. "We and White Lotus have searched many places, we traveled to almost every village and valley where we think the Avatar may be found."
"Let me guess, you and those Lotus fools tried the Earth Kingdom method of finding the Avatar, the same one that was used to find the last Earth Avatar but failed. Am I correct?" The Khan's words were dead right, and Tenzin simply moved on after a slight surprise at the warrior's intelligence.
"Ahem," Tenzin repositioned his words. "Like you have mentioned, we and the Order of the White Lotus have searched the Earth Kingdom, and failed to locate the next Avatar." He pulled out something from his robes, revealing a small leather pouch. Four individual items are pulled out and laid across the ground onto a yellow piece of cloth. The Khan leaned forward to take a better look.
Khenbish widened his eyes, trying to reconfirm what he is looking at. Never would he thought he would get the chance to see such important artifacts. He sure is lucky today!
Four items, four toys, four important relics owned by past Avatars are displayed for everyone to see. Those who are knowledgeable immediately recognized the importance of these objects and explain it to those who are still confused.
The four toys are all unique and distinctive, they each represent the four nations and their bending culture. They once belonged to past Avatars, and have since became the Air-nomad way of identifying the next one in line. The children who recognized the toys as something familiar is a sign that they are the Avatar, that the memories of their past lives flows through them.
The toys are: Stuffed Hog Monkey, a drum, a whirligig and a clay turtle...
"Mayumi!" Satchiko shaked her sister's arm, and struggled to talk. She is a little excited when she noticed thre clay turtle. "Isn't that?"
"Yes," Mayumi almost laughed when she confirmed Satchiko's sudden thrilled mood. "It is Kyoshi's toy."
The two sisters have known this special clay turtle back on Kyoshi island. According to ancient stories pasted down to every Kyoshi warrior leader including Akahana, Kyoshi has broken a clay turtle when Kyoshi island was still a just a peninsula. When the last Earth Avatar was just a nobody, she has atrocious at Earth bending. After Kyoshi took the clay turtle away from a search for Avatar procedure, she accidentally broke it by bending it around for practice.
"Who?" Sarangerel asked, not sure who that is.
"It's the last Earth Avatar, that toy belonged to her after she broke the original one a few hundred years ago." Mayumi explained thoroughly.
Ganbaatar stared at air-nomads, trying to decide what to do with them next. "What game are you playing old man?" He asked, suspicious at this strange presentation. "You think you would find the Avatar here? Didn't you forget that all our Earth benders perished by the hands of the raides, and none have been born in this camp for countless moons! How can you expect to find the Avatar here?"
"I know that there is a very low chance, but I cannot exclude your people from the the search. We simply can't ignore the possibility that the Avatar might reside here as a bender who learnt air as their first element." Tenzin responded, which did managed to stabilize Ganbaatar's disdain for him.
"What will you do if you managed to find the Avatar?" The Khan wondered, still wanting to know more about this little goal of theirs. "It is not that I am against your fruitless mission, but I simply felt it would be pointless, and a waste of your time."
"Why?" Jinora asked, sounding very innocent. "If Korra have reincarnated, we should do everything to locate her!"
"Do I even need to tell you? That girl was in the Avatar state during her last moments, since she is weak and couldn't even beat a random nobody by herself, she used her trump card instead." The Khan openly spoke, not even considering what Jinora might think of his opinion towards her late friend. "You might as well as declare that the cycle has ended, and the world would no longer get another Avatar. But perhaps that is for the better, we Earth nationals don't want another incompetent fool that only serve the interest of other nations. Compared to all other Avatars, what has Korra ever done to help the Earth Kingdom?"
Jinora swallowed all the insults towards Korra, she gripped her hands, which did not went unnoticed by Satchiko. The Kyoshi warrior felt that this air-nomad must have some sort of friendship with the last Avatar, but couldn't express her anger here in case of repercussion. While Satchiko never have terrible perception of this Korra person, she cannot bring herself to see the last Avatar as someone that is perfect. This is mostly due to the rampant poverty and conflict she has witnessed on the first day she has arrived on the mainland Earth Kingdom. Should Korra have not died, maybe she can have opportunity to improve the lives of the citizens here.
"She has accomplished more in her lifetime than any past Avatar!" Tenzin rebuked the Khan's view on Korra. "You and your people have the power of air because of her!"
"You are right Tenzin!" The Khan laughingly approved. "She stopped the Equalist, saved the world from ten thousand years of darkness, revived the air-nation, thwarted Zaheer's childish ideology. And even stopped a tyrant." The Khan's paused, changed his tone to a more critical one. "But then, what about her legacy after her passing? That fool left the portal open, and let those creatures of spirit world free access to ours. Do you know how many people have died because people don't know how to stay away from those things? She may have defeated that blasted Kuvira, but the Earth Kingdom became worse with a power vaccum and the lack of order! Those democratically elected governors of each state are inept fools who just so happens to have the skill to make their subject think they are better off this way. Which is why I find your admiration towards your student to be self-congratulating!"
The Khan then pulled his leather glove on his left hand, and shocked everyone on the scene. Mayumi widened her eyes, and Satchiko placed her hand to cover her large gawping mouth. They don't even know how to describe this.
The Khan's left hand, doesn't look like one that belonged to a human. In fact, there are white fur all across his hand. Razor sharp claws replaced his nails, this scene is like a horror story, only that it is part of the reality they are in.
"The only spirit crises I think is happening, is that these creatures can freely take over our bodies, and we can do nothing about it!" The Khan's word made Ganbaatar nod in approval. "What can I say? When I first saw her childhood foolishness, I never expected her to be the brightest. I was there when she went through her training in the South Pole, I was there when she slipped out of our sight and went to Republic city. I was there when she divided the Earth Kingdom along with the puppet prince. Lastly, I was certainly there to witness her last moments, how she got killed by none other than some nobody whom we don't even know about! I don't understand, how can she lose when she has it all!"
The Khan was panting, recoiling from his rant. "I have served for the White Lotus for almost half of my life, I wasted my youth dedicated to to help the Avatar because I thought I can help make the world a better place. Instead, I got a wake up call, it is only then I realized that the Avatar I have sworn to protect is not one that is competent or considerate of the bigger picture. She is just a naive girl who thinks she is always right, regardless how much her impulsive decisions can affect the livelihood of millions. I guess you can say that I would much prefer that she doesn't even exist. Yes, I will not have air-bending, but me and my people at least will not be seen as impure beings who are constantly prosecuted by those cultist." The Khan looked at his left hand and covered it with the glove once more. To many people, he is a monster. At least his face was not affected when the sprit possessed him.
Temujin's words were like daggers for the air-nomads. Jinora has so far done a great job to hide her emotions. Clearly, Korra is a person that meant a lot to her, regardless what the Khan said, she can never imagine a world without that Avatar.
Temujin turned around, his back facing the four Air-nomad. "You can do whatever you want here as long as you do not bother my people. But you will not do it here in this tent, and you will certainly not be knocking on the doors of every family. You can only perform this little thing of yours tomorrow in the bison's field." The tone was neither mean or friendly, it was a strict and authoritative manner of which Temujin is commanding them. "Whichever bender that wants to partake in this useless test can go to you, but remember, I will not be responsible when you find nothing."
"Temujin," Tenzin addressed the Khan, fearlessly using his personal name. "Did you left the Order of the White Lotus because you are dissatisfied with Korra's failures, or her as a person? I still remember your first day as a member, how you told me you are inspired by my father's legacy."
The Khan's did not respond immediately. There was a heavy sigh, but Temujin nonetheless managed provide something back to the monk. "I was quite idealistic back then," he said embarrassingly. "I may have killed the last remaining Red Lotus member in the name of protecting the Avatar, but let me be clear, my only loyalty lies in my family." He said as he directed his hand so that it would encompass every one of his people. "I left because the order has grown weak and senile. The Avatar killer said this before, but I will say it again. Korra was caged up, she never explored the world like your father, and she definitely don't even know what each nation need. She does not have what it takes to keep the world's balance. For me, perhaps the order's intention to safeguard the Avatar also lead to her incompetent dealings with the four nations. And because of that, I no longer wish to be a lapdog."
There was a moment of placate between Temujin and the air-nomads. Which is relief, since they are no longer as hostile to each other as before.
"You can leave now," the Khan gave clearance to them. "You can stay in the camp for one day, after you tested every children tomorrow morning, you shall leave and we will never meet each other again."
"Thank you for at least telling me this," Tenzin expressed in gratitude. While the rift between the two different group of air-nomads may be vast, at least it isn't completely hostile. To Tenzin, this definitely can be a victory.
The four air-nomads retreated from the tent, leaving the crowd silent. Jinora, however, took one tiny glance at the Kyoshi warriors, and left with others without leaving a word.
That was not what she has expected, Satchiko thought to herself. At least they are not in danger, almost. She took another piece of food that is still on her table, and stuffed it in her mouth. Delicious, but would be better if she had her dinner without such volatile disturbance.
"Sister," Mayumi called from the side, catching Satchiko's attention. "I think we should go and see those air-nomads when we got the chance."
Satchiko blinked her eyes, not sure why they should do that. "You want to ask what their home is like so that we can go see those temples in future?"
"No, not that." Mayumi hinted. "There are more important things, and I want to be absolutely sure." She said, looking at Satchiko, who reacted cluelessly.
...
The people within the tent gradually left, for the celebration has ended. The Khan sat on his chair, watching as his people went back home. He secretly order some guards to watch the four monks as they too resigned for tonight.
"My Khan," Khenbish addressed respectfully. "Do you very think it's a good idea to keep these people in the camp?"
"Those monks are only in denial of the end of the cycle, the last Avatar was a weakling, for all her failures, she is useless when facing an opponent alone. First she lost the connections, now the cycle is gone." Temujin ruthlessly pointed out, with Khenbish still at his side. "They might not find an Avatar here, but like mice, they cannot harm us either. Heh, you know Khenbish, I don't blame them for their love of the Avatar. After all, that water tribe knuckle head was their dear friend."
"These temple dwellers do believe there is still hope, but I just pray that my son would not get into a fight with them." Khenbish's voice was full of concerns. Batu hated the monks.
"Your son is brave warrior, as his father, you should also guide him in trusting more in himself. But his personal conflict with those bald heads can only be resolved through his own will." The Khan told Khenbish, taking another sip from his bowl of fermented milk. "I suggest that Batu should join the warriors more often. He should more accustomed to battle."
Khenbish almost coughed when he heard that. "W-Wouldn't he be too young sir? Amy father would not want their children to be exposed to danger, the same goes to Khenbish.
"If you are worrying about your son, all I can say is that your fears are not unfounded." The Khan's words made Khenbish surprise, it seems there is nothing he can hide from his chief. "I know you are also worried that those blue arrow monks might take your son away, after all, those monks are constantly recruiting new air-benders after the harmonic convergence. But even if those thieves may be naive fools, they knew not even their air-nomad wisdom can reach reconciliation with the young Batu. They tried to bring him to their side before and failed spectacularly, so he chose us. Would you not want your son to become a great warrior?"
Khenbish looked down on the floor, not wishing to disobey Temujin's philosophy.
It was many years after their own town was destroyed by the bandits, and begin their endless journey around the world as nomads. After his daughter Sarangerel became a teenager, the entire tribe made a stop near a remote village on the Earth Kingdom. They never camped within the settlement, as they don't want to attract any unwanted attention from the locals or raiders. Occasionally, they sent people to buy supplies. It was at that time that they discovered Batu, the only air-bender in the town, as harmonic convergence has awakened many people without bending and gave them the power to control air.
"Batu was just a little boy back then, so young, so indecisive, yet those monks still toyed with his life." Temujin mumbled. "If those bald heads have decided to take his parents entire family like they have promised, or maybe helped to defend that village, perhaps the boy wouldn't even be driven to such hatred. He would be ignorant of the cruel world of the adults, and spent much of his childhood in laugher. But here in our tribe, I will not allow anyone to be weak. All men who can wield a sword must learn how to fight, how to kill. And that absolutely includes Batu."
"He is just a little boy my Khan," Khenbish said, hoping he didn't to offend his leader.
The Khan almost frowned. "My apologies, Khenbish, what I was supposed to say is that you have given the boy a new chance at life. Allow me to rephrase what I just say previously. Batu must learn how to take a life in order to save one.
"Thank you my Khan, I am deeply honored. I took the boy in as my own is also partly due to your wisdom. When the world is in peril, who do we depend on? You told us, we can depend on no one but ourselves. Since the Avatar may no longer be a thing, I don't want to wait for the next Avatar to bring hope to Batu's life."
"Your parents would be proud of you, even if you cannot see them, their spirit will always be with you no matter where the tribe goes!" The Khan commented on this simple man's value. Even Khenbish is not the strongest warrior in the tribe, his ideals always impressed the Khan. Despite not having air-bending, people like him and Ganbaatar still did their best to fight their enemies.
"Yeah, oh I almost forgot!" Khenbish suddenly remembered. "My wife wanted me to prepare additional sleeping mattress for the two guests. We must cut our conversation short! My apologies!" The man supported his body with the walking stick, preventing himself from tripping. He hurried towards the entrance.
"Walk carefully!" Temujin yelled.
Family. What a interesting concept. The Khan though to himself. The tent now lies empty, he is the only one left. Sitting on his throne, he surveyed the vacant tent, and wondered what he should do next. He felt empty, like he has nothing better to do. The guards have also gone home to sleep, so he has no one to talk to.
Temujin made a soft yawn, and retreated to the outside of this tent. He gazed upon the stars, and saw countless sparkles performing in the sky. The night became darker, and all creatures slept. He might as well as go to sleep himself. Hopefully, he can get some rest without overthinking.
He took a stroll across the quiet camp, lights have been extinguished, not a soul can be heard. He did heard a slap, possibly Saran punishing Khenbish for his lateness again.
"Those two lovebirds, they never change do they." Temujin is amused. After passing some night guards, he arrived at a place in the camp where a bison is resting. This place is separate from the grazing ground of main herd. As that was reserved for bisons that needed space to nurture their young.
It was empty spot where Temujin has arrived to, and he was greeted with one sleeping bison.
The beast was not an ordinary sky bison. Even under the cover of the night, one can clearly distinguish it from the rest. It's much larger, with thick grey fur instead of white. The animal has plenty of scars earned from battling poachers and bandits alike, yet this creature is not a prey, he is a more of a predator, an alpha amongst the bisons.
Temujin gently climbed on the bison's back, and laid down onto its soft fur. He closed his eyes, and rest his tired body.
"What a day, at least I can get some rest, unless those bald head wake us up!" The Khan muttered to himself. "I'm just glad that you and your herd were there to save us, when those blue arrow monks were not!"
The large bison mumbled some noise in his sleep, as if to tell Temujin to get some sleep.
"Ok, ok, I get it. Good night then." Temujin chuckled to the bison, who only made another noise in response.
