Hi all! Chapter 2 is up! Hope you all enjoy!
"How long do we have to endure this?" Peter groaned.
"As long as it takes." Lucy snapped back.
The Crystal Age rulers sat in the dining hall as they waited for the royal baker to start setting down different samples of the wedding cake in front of them. Peter and Caspian were feeling bored out of their mind, having no interest in the specifics of the wedding. Susan was close to storming out of the place but Lucy had set her eyes on her sister.
On the other hand, Edmund was just happy to be there, because he would get to eat cake. As the baker walked inside with a three-tiered cake, he sat up straight in his seat. "Now this is something that I can get behind."
But that was only the sample for how the cake would look. The baker returned with a small sample size cake…and another…and another until the eighteen foot long table was filled with various different little cakes. The three-tiered cake laid at the centre. Everyone turned to look at the youngest at the table, who ignored all their stares and thanked the baker for getting the work done on time.
"We will send the official order by nightfall," Lucy had made sure to mention.
"Thank you, Your Majesties." The baker bowed and left the room.
"Why don't we get started?" Lucy prompted.
"Lu, we don't have a problem with getting started," Caspian said. "But which one do we start with?"
Lucy squinted her eyes at him and was going to lean forward to choose the cake when Edmund beat her to it. "Why don't we try the pecan one first?"
Lucy smiled, at least someone was happy with that day's preparations. "Go ahead, Ed."
What started as a slow day turned positive really quickly. All the cakes were absolutely delicious and the time had come to try the three-tiered cake. Caspian stood up to cut it and serve everyone equal portions.
Edmund finished his piece immediately. When he was going to get a second serving, Peter gave him a long look. "You've eaten five cakes before this one."
Edmund scoffed, "And your point is?"
"Let him have it, Pete." Susan told him. She was pleased that everyone was together even if it was for wedding-related work. She knew that Edmund had a sweet tooth and seeing him happy made her happy.
Edmund smiled cheekily at Peter, but was stopped by him before he could take a second serving. In return, Edmund took the whole cake in his hands, and ran! "Ed, no!" Lucy shouted, but Edmund was already out of the room.
Peter started to chase him out of the hall. "Edmund, stop!"
Caspian started laughing. He caught a quick glimpse at Susan watching him. He squinted his eyes at her and she shook her head in response as if to say that nothing was wrong.
"Well," Lucy clapped her hands together. "I really liked the third cake that we tried. I'm going to send the order in once I confirm it with the cake lovers outside." She put together the papers she had and tied them up with a thread.
"Uh, Lu?" Caspian called out. "Don't you need our opinion?" He pointed between him and Susan.
"Oh, we don't need the bride and groom's opinion."
"Wha-"
"Leave it," Susan halted Caspian's words and he frowned, silencing himself.
"She better not pick the pecan flavor," Caspian muttered to himself.
Edmund and Peter ran back inside, Peter held the cake Edmund stole in his hands. After he set the cake back down, away from Edmund, Peter held his forehead and took a deep breath. "I'm going to have a sugar rush!"
Lucy gathered the bundled papers in her hands and stood up. "Endure it."
Edmund sat back at the table and gave a small salute to Caspian, "Thank you for picking the pecan flavor."
Caspian sighed, a defeated look taking over his face. "You're welcome," he muttered.
When the three Pevensies started to head towards their chambers for the night, they left Caspian and Susan alone for the first time all day. "It always seems that you and I are the last to leave the room, doesn't it?" He looked at her, failing to hold back a blushing face.
Susan looked back at him, a creeping smile on her face as well. "Well I suppose we like each other's company." Her eyes crept up to his, softly staring into them.
He wrapped his hands around her, she felt gentle in his touch. "You know, maybe Aslan will come to our wedding."
She nodded. "That would make it truly wonderful, even more than it already is." She pulled Caspian in closer and held on tight, not wanting to let go, him not wanting it either.
The night was silent...too silent.
"You think you are dad but you're not!"
"Just don't know when to stop pretending."
"That boy is a traitor and will die on the stone table."
Lies.
Lies.
Betrayal.
Lies.
Siblings.
Traitor.
Fake.
Lies.
Edmund burst out of bed, waking in a cold sweat. His breath vanished, his body shivering. He stared at his bed as he leant against a wall for support. His thoughts were rushing into his mind as he started to remember what he saw. "I haven't had a nightmare like this in years." He spoke to himself trying to calm down his breathing.
His breathing would not calm.
Was Edmund's dream just a coincidence? Find out next time!
