Only justice will bring peace.
Such are the wise, honest and beautiful statement made by one of the greatest Avatar. Avatar Kyoshi.
To deliver justice without hesitation, punishing the wrongdoers at immediate whim. To ensure that others do not repeat same nefarious offenses.
Through the skin of his feet, he can sense all their heartbeats. Getting slower with each passing second inside this suffocating underground compound. It's another one of the countless cultish cell that embedded themselves into the overgrown Lower Ring, thinking they can slowly amass new followers to their cause. But like little critters who fear the light, they are near defenseless when discovered. Like small candles in the dark, he can feel their faint lights die out one by one as he stepped across a puddle of red. One of them still persists, that is who he is after, a filthy traitor. To the locusts who have eaten the food that is grown by others, he will not grant them a painless end.
"I will never tell you! As a proud acolyte of the Master, I cannot-"
The earth glove strangling the man's neck tightened, slowly suffocating him. The man tried to remove it with his bending but to no avail, for the grip was too strong and the will of its user even more stubborn.
"Let go of me!" He clenched. But the choke persisted, a crack in the bone can be heard this time. The man being held by his throat felt his vision gradually darkened.
"E-Enjoy y-your mo-ment government lapdog," he used the last ounce of energy to dispense some choking warning. He is clearly drowning in his own blood. "O-Our master is all powerful, n-nothing can stop him. Soon, the whole w-world will be engulfed by the Great Et-"
The traitorous acolyte was never able to finish that sentence. A loud snapping sound was produced and the glove threw this cultist to the floor. He was placed alongside twenty other Earth benders in the pitch dark room. They are all fanatical, willing to sacrifice their own lives and believing that somehow their bodies are immune to weapons and the blunting damage of earth.
Well, they were.
The Acolytes of San Bao are by no means the first spiritual sect where members believe in unproven superstition and the supposedly invincibility granted by the leader. Cults in the past are all like this, possessing a fanatical devotion to whatever cause or belief, recklessly throwing themselves at their enemies just to be defeated easily.
The old dangerous spiritual sect known as the Kang Shen would have a spiritual leader blessing its non-bending fighters, waving incense stick and having the ashes fell on the people's chests. But in truth, they drew their true strength and devotion from the death of loved ones killed by benders. It serves as the fuel for their fanatical behaviors. In many ways, the Acolytes of San Bao and the Kang Shen are not very different. Even though their beliefs of bending purity and the hatred of benders would most likely force both sides to annihilate each other. If only the Kang Shen can be exploited, used to fight the Acolytes. But in all honesty, the Kang Shen are just a relic from a bygone era, a time where their organization are not even born, which is also a time when their founder still haven't hate them yet.
The owner of earth glove walked towards the now dead traitor. After collecting the conical helmet from the treasonous man, he pulled out a single edge sword from his massive sleeve and cut off the pony tail from the traitor. Something else caught his attention, a teen is trying to drag himself to the nearest door. With countless earth pellets embedded into his stomach, it's a surprise the straggler can still crawl over his fellow dead followers. His will to survive is strong, and the creature in the dark admitted that.
A long chain and cuff was threw out from the dark green sleeve, ensnaring the target's arm and locking it in place. It slowly pulled the attempt escapee to the owner, something that no one wants to be near unless they wanted death.
"N-No! Not like this!" His age is about the same as an seventeen year old, young and juvenile. The minds of children are still malleable. His parents are likely fierce supporters of this so called Eternal Balance. Yet despite being recognized as a 'pure' Earth bender in their underground gathering, not even he can resist a metal chain's grasp.
Desperately trying to pull his arm out of it, the young teen met face to face with the metal chain's master. What lies underneath the metal conical helmet is not a plain face. The areas around the eyes are painted with an excessive amount of black, with wide curves and arch that leads to sides of the face. A mustache-like shape area formed between the nose and the mouth, ending below the chin. Lastly, two wide stripes of black covered the forehead. Everything else is full-filled with a cold stark white paint. In the confines of this pitch dark room, its eyes pierced right into this young acolyte.
Staring deeply into the young acolyte, those dark beady eyes, unblinking, watched as its prey refuse to move an inch. The remains of dead cultists on the floor is a good reminder what will happen. However, the living one will be useful for further questioning, especially when the acolytes are hiding where their main gathering location is. The identity of their sect leader still looms at large.
But those who knew well about the sons of Kyoshi would also come to terms that when one of them set their sights on something, they will never stop until they get it.
The man with a conical helmet and a long overbearing robe slowly opened the door to the outside air. With another person chained to his hand and carried in arm, he marched out and stepped into the cold rainy night. Water dripping over his hat's iron tip. Looking up, he saw the single flash within the stormy clouds. The spiritual sect known as the Acolytes of San Bao have many tiny holdouts around the world. So far, the Fire Nation under the guidance of their firelord is very successful at keeping the sect away from their islands. But the Earth Kingdom with its decentralization and turmoil cannot muster a unified response to the cult's dangerous proliferation. Within this city of walls and secrets, the Acolytes of San Bao have hidden away, shrouding themselves into the shadows. To search the entirety of the Lower Ring is no simple task. Behind every door could be a secret room. No matter how much secret holdout they uncover, more will sprang up unless they exterminate the snake by cutting off the head.
The head would be their local sect leader, a local representative of the main figure known as the Master. But truthfully, their follower's zealousness can never be extinguished unless they can bring down the Master himself. The cultists drew their strength in their undying loyalty in this exalted figure. But if the Master falls, their will will crumble with him.
"W-Where are you taking me?" The captive cautiously asked. "My parents, they will never allow you to just take me away!" Whoever his parents are, they are most likely not here. But first, the presenting problem would be the wound caused by speeding earth pellets. Despite the projectiles being smaller than a small earth disc, to the size of pebbles. So long as the user have enough skill and training, even the staunchest opponent can be easily defeated using such harmless projectiles.
The boy might not live. But he is more useful than the more deluded adults, refusing to reveal the local sect leader's position. But children are different. Their minds are still malleable, vulnerable to influence. Like heated metal, the substance can be bend into various shape before it finally cools down, settling into a state of stability.
...
This was her first time setting her foot into Ba Sing Se's upper ring, the place where all those rich folks reside. She should not be surprised. Everywhere are signs of affluence and citizens dressing in beautiful clothing donned with yellow mixed with green. Educated and powerful men spent their time in teahouses, or inspecting their massive properties in the outer districts all the while counting gold coins from their influx of wealth. They are often seen on carriages, driven by the most prestigious breed of ostrich horses with fine and soft feathers. The fancy women spent their existence to maintain their timeless beauty, fighting against the march of time. Their complexions are pampered and refined in a famous spa, where customer makeovers can receive reduced rates if they allow university students to experiment the latest treatment formula. They would then recite classical Earth Kingdom poetry, exerting their knowledge over the occasional Water Tribe travelers, who couldn't help but listen from the window.
People here live in large walled compounds decorated with fancy architecture made of the finest stone with yellow roof tiles, a color that demonstrates both power and wealth. The cleanly built roads filled with ostrich horse carriages that brings in the guests. On their way, she can see ponds for turtleducks. From what she has heard from troops eating in Jin's restaurant, most wealthy residents here descended from families that had been rich for so many generations that their members no longer understood what honest work actually meant. Within the safety of the tall wall, it disallows anyone from getting a good sight, obscuring the overgrowth and crammed lower ring from the eyes of the complacent people. Which is why this area of the city also houses Ba Sing Se's most important member, upper class merchants, military generals as well as those government officials. Anyone who have passed the Keju will also receive residency in this ring.
In comparison, she is just like these people here, born to parents who just so happens to be important people. They would then inherit their wealth, land and whatever business that was accumulated in the family. But who is she to judge? Didn't she also received a free education at Ba Sing Se's university without working hard at all? At this point, she still felt both she and her fellow exchange students are simply children of leaders, which incentivize Xuan Zang's diplomatic game.
It's strange to think that the Judge of Honghai himself doesn't have an estate here, preferring to dwell inside a wall turret with little sunlight. That peculiar Earthbender does have some weird quirks. Never reveal his real name. Collect weapons from enemy commanders. Weird titles. Desires to own the sword of Chin the tyrant. No one truly knows what lies underneath that unsettling iron mask helmet. For her, she cannot predict what he, or it, will do next.
"This way children, follow me!" Nguyen is tasked to lead the group of students including Satchiko and Hudie. As of now they are marching towards the main entrance to the royal palace. In front of her is a massive stone wall covered in red plaster. Heavily fortified, the gate has three arches and is topped by a two storied pavilion. Two wings support the double-eaved guard towers to both sides of the gate, and a large golden coin symbol sat above the center massive door. All of this combined together formulates the grandeur of the ornate entrance, serving as the iconic symbol of the Earth Kingdom and its ruler's strength.
"Jeez, so many people," remarked Hudie. She is not fond of crowded spaces, a habit that was present on the crowded train station before. A huge gathering of people waited patiently in front of the entrance, which is lined with guards in brigandine. If they were to counted them all, there would probably be around a five hundred guests who are invited to the Keju ceremony. Even though the event is dedicated to those who have passed the exam, majority of the folks here don't seems to be relatives of the graduates.
The doors slowly opened. Like water, they flowed in. The guards quickly inspected the tickets, not allowing a single one through without a firm check. Satchiko tightly hold on to her own. The golden slip with a coin symbol is the only thing that would grant her access. Losing it would be very unfortunate.
"How long has it been?" A random elder asked. "How many years have these gates been closed?" It is said that there was a terrible event unfolded here before Satchiko was born. The city was driven into anarchy, rioters looted the palace and its precious artifacts and treasury. And only now are these gate opened once again.
Venturing through the long dark corridor, she passed through the entrance and was greeted with something that made her eyes goggled in amazement. The moment she stood into the sunlight, a vast distance of an ever expanding space is visible before her.
It is a gigantic lightly colored courtyard, probably larger than the entirety of her village, and a field of long rectangular flags planted into the ground. The entire contingent gradually walked themselves onto the large brick path that will lead them to the main building. Looking straight ahead is the destination. The meridian line points directly at it, and the path is flanked by huabiao ornamental pillars where Earth bending guards are stationed.
The building, the royal palace of Ba Sing Se is a magnificent piece of structure to behold. It's someone's home. From what she has heard, it's a place where the sole sovereign of this entire continent spent his days with concubines and playing games, leaving all the governing to the ministers. Separated by a stream and three stone bridges, the royal palace is positioned in the heart of Ba Sing Se. Within this compound is home to the central government ministries and the mansions of the city's wealthiest citizens, bureaucrats, and civil servants. This design allows its elites to exert equal influence across the entire city. But it is also the heart of the entire Earth Kingdom by extension, figuratively speaking.
"Man, it's so far away!" A teen in a tight and stiff robe complained, wishing how the journey to the palace would be shortened. He then went on to defame whoever thought it was a good idea to built this courtyard to such ridiculous proportion, ensuring a very inconvenient walk.
"Behave yourself!" An elder disciplined. He is presumably the grandfather of this juvenile. "This is where the Earth Kingdom's most significant part of its history took place. Wise leaders and heroic generals walked upon this very ground! It is also where our forefathers reign across our land! So pay your respect to the few thousand years of our forefather and kiss the ground!"
"W-Wait, are you serious?"
"I said kiss it!"
The young teen did so, all to the surprise and chuckles of others around him. Judging by their clothing, they are a wealthy family of the upper ring. To Satchiko, the older generation have deeper respect to the very building where all the reforms and politics took place. It is the capital city after all, where the highest authority of the entire Earth Kingdom lives. This is the seat to the entire contingent, the heart of Earth itself. She can understand that people can have a profound respect with their history.
But then again, she is not from within these walls, so her feelings are completely different.
In the past and present, and most likely the future, the Earth Monarch always maintain very minimal influence outside Ba Sing Se, which is only technically under his supreme authority. Many lands enjoy a high degree of autonomy, some even have their own lesser king. Growing up, Kyoshi island is essentially on its own, just an insignificant place where no one cares it exist. The three chiefs on her island do not answer to Ba Sing Se, neither do the many other states outside the wall. With so many provinces and prefectures on the mainland, it is absolutely impossible to a create centralized administration across such vast and difficult geography. The flow of information would be slow, and the bureaucracy would be so inefficient that taxes might as well as be devoured by corrupt officials. Today, Ba Sing Se have no authority in the wars occurring outside. It is the warlords and individual armed groups that truly control their respective lands.
As for the attitude towards the Earth Monarch, she cannot help but feel conflicted. She never very held a favorable view of the Earth Monarchy, which one of its sovereign was at odd with their founder. Each succeeding ruler brings the land into a different kind of era, prosperity or great suffering. In the era of Kyoshi, the Earth King's rule was immensely unpopular, leading to massive revolts and of course creating the climate for Chin to take power. Based on the stories passed down by her mother, their founder forced the Earth King of that time to formulate new reforms to appease the masses. Thus protecting the city from total chaos.
...
Hudie panted desperately, resting on her knees. They have been walking for far too long, and everyone is feeling mostly the same. The Miao girl pulled out a gourd water bottle, emptying it immediately. "Are we there yet? My feet hurts!"
"Nope!" Nguyen pleasantly replied while maintaining that wide optimistic smile. Like a good tour guide, she doesn't tire easily like everyone else. Which is exactly why the students she is leading are at the very front of the guests. "Come on, don't be a bunch of softies. Some good exercise isn't going to kill you. When we crossed that stone bridge, we will arrive that the royal palace museum. There would be a lot of artifacts and paintings to look at!"
It did inspired some energy back into all the exchange students. Luckily, Satchiko isn't wearing her armor. All she had is a green kimono and a training headband on her head. Which meant she isn't being worn down like how Hudie has a silver ornament on her.
...
"Is this a joke?" Satchiko grimaced. She can feel her stomach churn in disappointment. After they crossed over the stream using the stone bridge, they realized that there is still an enormous stair they have to climb. Looking at the prominent structure that towers over her, she can't help but feel intimidated. Its size and full incorporation of stone architecture made their island's Kyoshi warrior temple look like a wooden shed, like a tiny little fish compared to the Elephant Koi.
"Oh don't you worry, it's just a little stretch for your legs!" Nguyen said cheerfully. "Not a big of deal!"
"A LITTLE?!" Satchiko exclaimed incredulously. There is no way all of them can make it to the top. Without adequate help, none of them can even go half way without fainting.
The elderly man from earlier didn't complain like they did. They observed as he slowly climbed the stairs without hesitation. Unlike his grandson, he has waited for far too long just for the gates to open again. Which is why this gigantic stairs is not a great obstacle.
Nguyen winked at them all in triumph, implying them to continue. The students can only groan in defeat. They will climb the stairs even if they have to do it at snail pace. But the Kyoshi warrior have other ideas, one that might help herself get there faster. Her impatience will not allow her to be wasting so much time. If Nguyen wanted them all to have 'a little stretch', then she will make the most out of it.
"Um Satchiko, what are you-"
"Going for a run, Hudie." Satchiko tightened her headband and the belt tying around her kimono. She bolted pass the tour guide at an incredible speed, surprising everyone else. Who would thought that a person who is bad at bending could have such agility. Spending less than half a second on each one, ignoring the tour guide's plea to stop and overtook the elder.
For a few minutes, her feet felt sore and aching from the climbing. It reminded her of that time when she was trying to catch up to Tenzin's bison, but met Batu instead. If she didn't grown tired and look for water, things might have turned out a bit differently. They certainly might not be risking their live when fighting the four acolytes trying to kidnap them.
With one last push, she propelled herself over the final step and reached the top. There was a sense of victory in her heart, a self-congratulatory feeling of racing to the top, being the first person who reached the Royal Palace before anyone else.
"Oof!" She tripped over. Luckily, her hands stopped her face from smashing into the stone floor. She can't get up just yet, not until she recovers from all that physical exercise that truly tested her limits. Perhaps all the adventures she have to do just to get to the city itself have developed her stamina.
"Ah, finally! And here I thought it would take hours for the first one to get here. I must say, you are very fast for a regular student." It was a middle aged voice that is congratulating her. Raising her head, the Kyoshi warrior familiarized herself and noticed that in the center of the massive doors stood a man. With the regular queue hairstyle and a mustache encircling his mouth, the stranger greeted the Kyoshi warrior in his yellow and dark green robe. He also wore a guanmao, a velvet cap with a peacock feather attached to the top. Based on appearance and where he is standing, Satchiko can tell he must be some high ranking member of the upper ring.
"The name is Han Fei of the Gan Jin tribe, director of Ba Sing Se's royal museum. It is such a great honor to meet you, young lady." He covered his fist with his other palm and bowed. She has seen this before. People from different places bow differently from her home. So she did it too after getting up, trying to mimic him at a very sloppy result.
"Thank you very much sir." Satchiko greeted courteously. "My name is Satchiko, from Ky-" She remembered that she mustn't reveal personal information to strangers. They are technically criminals wanted by the state of Yi. "I'm from the south." She plainly stated, remembering Kyoshi island's geographical location is somewhat southward when compared to Ba Sing Se.
Running sounds of shoes can be detected coming up the stairs. The tour guide and the others came up swiftly, made it to the top almost losing their breath. Nguyen is puffing with tremendous effort.
"Goodness! Your sister would be so angry with me if I let you out of my sight!" Nguyen cried. But little did she knew, this simple line of words would arouse immediate suspicion from Satchiko. At the request of Mayumi, Hudie never told anyone about their identities as Kyoshi warriors, in fear of prosecution. Satchiko also withheld this secret from everyone, not disclosing anything. But how did Nguyen know about Satchiko's relationship with Mayumi? Did she found out about this earlier? Or did Mayumi trust Nguyen enough that she already told the tour guide without the Satchiko knowing?
"How did you know I have sister?" Satchiko asked directly. The tour guide halted breath, it's difficult after all that running up the stairs. There was silence, until Han Fei stepped in to overtake the conversation.
"Ah nice to see you again Nguyen, what a delightful surprise!" The director greeted warmly. "It must be very difficult to work for the city's tour while also studying for your medical exam."
"N-No sir! I didn't know that you would personally welcoming the visitors." Nguyen stuttered, appearing just as surprised. She placed her hands on her lap and lowered head, more than what is normally required. "W-Working as a tour guide has provided me with great joy! I couldn't t-thank you enough f-for the o-opportunity!"
Han Fei chuckled in a lighthearted manner and brushed his well maintained mustache. "No need to be so well mannered, after all, people like you play a vital role in showing our guests from afar the beauty of our city. It would be shame if we fail as honorable hosts. Am I right?" He looked down at Nguyen, who didn't dare raise her head without permission. That bamboo hat she is wearing acts like a shield that covers her face.
Satchiko noticed how the slender tour guide trembled a bit. This is a conversation between an employee and a superior. The hospitality Han Fei showed earlier seemed to have dwindled despite maintaining his amicable appearance.
"Now then, I suppose I shouldn't delay all of you students any longer." He smiled, indicating Nguyen to lead the all the exchange students present into the royal palace. "Today is an auspicious day, a celebration for two well timed occasion. With our mass retrieval of stolen artifacts, we will observe the grand reopening of the museum. But perhaps the more prominent event would be the inception of all the young talents who have passed the Keju exam. Nguyen, I want every single one of our honored guests to enjoy themselves before the main show."
"Y-Yes boss!" Nguyen quickly replied. She hurried over to Satchiko, snatching the Kyoshi warrior on one hand and Hudie with the other. "Everyone, come with me!"
"Um, miss tour guide, you ok?" Hudie asked, also noticing this erratic behavior.
"Everything is under control!" Nguyen reassured, but sounded a bit fearful. "Follow me! I will show you all some of the top artifacts secured by the city's BEST cultural curators!"
"Uh, sure..." Satchiko reluctantly agreed. Even if she wanted to resist, the firm grasp of Nguyen told her not to. The other visitors behind them finally made it up the walls. As they filled the area, Satchiko looked back at the direction of the stairs as Nguyen lead them to the large entrance. In the midst of visitors in elaborate and well decorated clothing, she saw Han Fei, looking directly at her. As the crowd became denser, more people became to walk pass the director, obscuring her view of him. Soon, he was consumed by wave of people.
Han Fei is gone.
...
The interior of the Royal Palace is very furnished and decorated. While she understood that this housed the monarch of the entire Earth Kingdom, she is still overwhelmed by the massive size of the doors and the extravagance of the room. The height of the ceiling and thick jade pillars are taller than any wooden lodges she lived in. At first, she thought interior would be dark and devoid of light. But the presence of green glowing crystals attached to pillars put that concern away. She is always surrounded with high ranking members who are invited to the Keju ceremony. Like her, they are also 'lucky' enough to be here. For all she is concerned, this ceremony is probably just an excuse for people to have an expensive party. But this building itself also felt unfair. This world is unfair. She has seen people living on the streets, just trying to survive. While at the same time someone lucky enough to be born into royalty can enjoy such a large palace.
As they galivanted around the different sections of the Royal Palace, Nguyen showed them priceless artifacts retrieved by the ever so industrious cultural guardians. There are plenty of ancient swords, painting and vase. Many of which Satchiko is disinterested in. The history lesson of the university already overdrove her brain, so she felt there is no need to observe more.
But there are a few items that did engrossed her inquisitiveness.
"Here is the robe that belonged to Earth Kingdom's most renown poet, Li Hei." Nguyen stated. All the students huddle around a dummy with equipped with a dark robe. She vaguely remembered this historical figure. One whole chapter of her book is dedicated to his life, achievements and contribution to Earth Kingdom culture. As an almost illiterate person, Satchiko cannot recite any of his poetries. However, she can vaguely understand some words on the wall, a copy of one of his famous poems.
Beside my bed a pool of light,
Is it hoarfrost on the ground?
I lift my eyes and see the moon,
I lower my face and think of home.
Even if she is far away from Kyoshi island. Even if she struggles with Earth bending. The moon every night is still the same one she saw at home. Other than that, she is grateful that Mayumi is here with her. Nothing can truly describe the feeling of wanting to go back to Kyoshi island, the place where is grew up and where all her people reside. Hopefully, she can get back as soon as possible.
They moved on, allowing a group of poetry enthusiast to take their place. No doubt they can receive more inspiration from the renown poet than her uneducated mind.
"And here is another piece of historical artifact, my favorite one. This is a great weapon forged during the Spring and Winter period of Earth Kingdom, the jian of Yue Wang the bitter king. One of the two greatest sword of the continent." Nguyen proclaimed. She seemed much more passionate about this piece over all the other paintings of Kings and vase about emperors. "It is forged thousands of years ago by a tribe of people living in the swamps. Using this weapon, its owner enacted revenge against a nearby Earth Kingdom state for past wrongs. Eventually winning the conflict."
Satchiko looked into the glass container. Inside is a weapon. It is a type of straight sword but its shape is different from the ones she has seen.
A jian is the type of sword used by mainland soldiers. It is doubled edged and most can be used with only one hand. Unlike the dao blades used by bandits and lowly lawmen, a jian is considered a gentleman's weapon that used with elegance and wisdom. It is mostly wielded by those with a certain amount of official power, such as military commanders or leaders.
Similar to a Kyoshi warrior's katana, a jian also comes in various sizes and shapes. But this one before her is beyond what she is usually accustomed to. Here in Ba Sing Se, she often saw soldiers carrying such weapons around. They are thin and made of iron. But this one in front of her has a broader blade and bronze texture. On the side facing upward, a column of ancient inscriptions are visible. All eight characters are written in a very wriggly and complex form, an indication of the sword's astounding age. Therefore, she is impressed by the unusual sharpness and resistance to tarnish. The sword's master craftmanship puts even her own blacksmith Munechika to shame, something she cannot help accept.
越王勾踐
死士挑戰
The first four words are likely the owner's name. As for the second line, she is uncertain. "Hey Nguyen, what's with that tiny little scratch on side the sword?" Satchiko cannot help but notice that minuscule imperfection. It is just one scratch, her sister's katana have much more. But on a weapon so pristine and unspoiled, it is much more noticeable.
Heavy sound of boots can heard across the hallway. A man clad in full cord and plaque with mountain pattern scales marched towards them. She should have expect him to be here. After all, if all the government officials and minsters are invited, how can they forgot about Ba Sing Se's war hero?
"That is because this magnificent blade were handled by people unworthy to even touch it!" His deep and booming voice ranged throughout the room, asserting his mighty presence. All eyes are on him. Some are in awe that the Judge of Honghai himself actually bothered to show up, others moved out of the way as he came through. "Such a timeless treasure, a sword which the condition are just like when it was forged. Enduring the march of time across more than two millennia and still maintain its prime condition. It is a shame that the clumsy, irresponsible and most importantly inferior handlers have tainted their hands on the weapon." He looked at the scratch, clearly displeased that it exist. "Sigh, if only it was treated with more care. Its former owner was a man who too have been unfairly handled. He was captured by his enemy state, humiliated and dishonored. When he returned to his homeland, he ate like a peasant and sleep on nothing but sticks and hay, even tasting bale. All to bitterly remind him of the past suffering inflicted by his foe. Only pure vengeance can satisfy his grudge. The moment he become strong, he lead his army and destroyed the enemy state, becoming fear and respected. He would even go as far as to command his frontline soldiers to slit their own throats, just to demoralize the enemy troops."
As a serious collector of many well crafted weapons, it is understandable that the general have great passion towards the prestige blade displayed here. Which is why Satchiko knew he definitely wouldn't mind owning this bronze weapon for himself. She then shifted her eyes to the tour guide, Nguyen wouldn't dare to over speak him. Instead the young woman stood quietly on the side, allowing the general to examine the glass display.
"While it is unfortunate that I cannot own this prized sword, at least it doesn't hinder me from one of my main quest. For the one true blade I hunger for is still out there, somewhere..."
After glancing at the empty sword holder in display, the general left the group, decided to marvel at some ancient paintings to garner more inspiration.
"Uh, ok, I think now would be the time for a bit of free time, yes." Nguyen nervously cleared her throat. The Judge of Honghai sort of challenged her job right there. Thankfully, she return being normal. An errand boy, presumably a worker here, hurried into their presence with a lone parchment made entirely out of pure leaf. It was meant for Nguyen. The tour guide looked perplexed the moment she laid her eyes on it. Smiles slowly faded. Her voice became more somber, uninterested in her duty. "That concludes our mini tour around the best museum in the world. I hope you all enjoyed this, and learned something as well. Now, you have thirty minutes to do whatever you please. After that, we regroup in front of the throne room's door." She left, leaving all the exchange students to their own devices. Most split up into groups and went their separate ways. Hudie wanted to accompany Satchiko, but was ushered away. Because Satchiko have other businesses to deal with. Unfinished business.
In the background, Satchiko spotted Jang and Sedna, who are both looking at some sort of wooden mannequin. She cannot help but feel a sense of nostalgia, and confusion. For the object in question appears strikingly similar to the training dummies she used to learn chi-blocking. The familiar chi-pathway lines on the doll is prevalent on the arm, legs and chest areas. Akahana taught her to use her fingers, precisely jabbing pressure points to disable an opponent's bending and physical movements.
Sedna looked saddened and sorrowful when looking at the life sized mannequin. She held up her two fingerless hands closely and rubbed them together, frowning deeply.
Satchiko's hands slowly reached for her single war fan hidden beneath her dress. From here, she noticed that Jang the firebender, is holding onto his trident spear. What are those two doing over there? She is anxious that the fire spitting man with a third eye is planning something nefarious. Assassination? Spying for some bandit organization? Stealing? Her instinct tells her that perhaps she should be cautious. Which is why she sent Hudie away just to be safe if a fight breaks out here. However, this time she will not strike first. She learnt her lesson, recklessness is not an admirable trait. She will wait and observe.
Just as her hand touched the cool metallic surface of her fan, a voice almost made her jump out of her skin.
"Enjoying the tour?" The director asked in a friendly tone.
"Ah!" She yelped. Satchiko almost lost her composure. Others looked at her direction with strange looks.
There were no footsteps or sound when Han Fei appeared at her left. As a Kyoshi warrior, she should have able to detect someone approaching her. Perhaps her recent lack of training in her order's combat arts have dampered her skills. She spun around to meet him, trying to act normal. It's like the director have appeared out from thin air. "Yes, of course. You know, just enjoying some art." She faked a smile and looked at an ancient looking clay pot on the ground with lotus patterns. "Oh, look at this!" She pointed at it with exaggerated interest. "I very like this artifact. Mmm, very expensive looking."
"What do you like about it?" Han Fei asked much to Satchiko's inner displeasure. She didn't expect he would be that persistent. A sudden idea came, one she thinks her mainlander father would be very proud of. All his hour long talks on furniture arrangement philosophy have all boiled down to this moment.
She brightened her expression, trying to act as intelligent as possible. Without any hesitation, she said those words out loud. "I think the positioning of the vase has great Feng Shui!"
Han Fei grimaced, mouth frowning a little.
"Yes, that's it! You see, because it is placed next to the wall...um." She scrapped her mind for some more of Hakaru's furniture placement 'wisdom'. "And the flow of positive energy is not...hindered. I guess?" Her words are tumbling all over the place. Worse of all, she has zero clue on what she is speaking here. Her wide awkward smile is a last resort to hide her flimsiness. According to what her father taught her. The concept of Feng Shui is just a philosophy for furniture placement. Being a production of mainland Earth Kingdom's many cultural norms and customs, it has been used govern spatial arrangement and orientation in the supposedly relation to the flow of 'energy'. The furnitures in her rooms are arranged not much different from what the other villagers have. However, they were privileged enough to have actual beds instead of wool mattresses. Which meant her father insists her and Mayumi's bunkbed should NOT be placed near the window, in fear that that it will lure in bad Feng Shui energy. Thus incurring bad luck.
As ridiculous and annoying as that sounds. To her, Hakaru's adherence to this philosophy very isn't that strange when compared to local superstitions and customs. Noticeable examples are people owning cats to bring good fortune. Spiders that appear in daylight means good luck, and should not be killed. Sleeping after eating would result in laziness, actually that one might be realistic. Some women from other villages would have many tattoos around their bodies, even their lips. For the more committed villagers, throwing beans around their house can ward off evil spirits. Usually a cleric would perform that task.
"Young lady, listen." Han Fei addressed respectfully and inhaled deeply. Even she herself knows that she have made a mistake, presumably in the ways of Feng Shui. The director coughed, ashamed to say the next part. "I don't know how I can say this in any other way. But this so called ancient vase you are looking at is actually just a rubbish bin."
"Oh," Satchiko awkwardly said. She looked again, she swore it is a beautiful porcelain vase used for decoration.
"Oh?" Director Han Fei raised his thick eyebrows and asked. "You don't seemed to be interested in our museum's artifacts."
Satchiko immediately disagreed with his deduction, for she has no intentions to show disrespect and stir up conflicts. She do not wish to burden Mayumi because of reckless behaviors. As the manager, Han Fei decided to show her some more notable artifacts, which he stated might interest her more. They walked away from the main hall, away from Jang and Sedna. As she felt concerned about the suspicious activities of that fire bender, they arrived at one of the museum's corner with objects that isn't just vase or paintings.
"As a director, it's such a pleasure to watch the visitors glamouring over our cultural heritage and appreciate what our ancestors have passed down for the new generations." Han Fei proudly said as they bypassed two history student examining a prehistoric Ding cauldron that predates before Ba Sing Se's establishment. "As progress constantly advance and transform society, we must never forget the mistakes and accomplishments of history. There are plenty of exhibits stolen when Ba Sing Se was driven to anarchy. Thankfully, we have repaired the walls and reinstate order." The director mused." A great deal of effort to get them back so that visitors can enjoy the culture and traditions passed down by our predecessors. But this section is a bit special."
"How special?" Satchiko asked.
They walked up to a large display, featuring some sort of animal skeleton that stands upright. She doesn't recognize this creature at all.
"What do you think this is?" Han Fei tested.
"What's this, a platypus bear?" She questioned. But there is no beak in the skeleton's mouth. She is comparing it to the live platypus bear the security used to suppress disorderly train passengers.
"It's a bear," Han Fei corrected. But Satchiko felt he is just simplifying things. She did pick up a few creatures from all those textbooks she read in class.
"Skunk bear?" She asked.
"No."
"Armadillo bear?"
"No."
"Gopher bear?"
"No."
"Bear cat?"
"Not even close," Han Fei replied calmly. It is a surprise that he didn't get mild frustration.
Unsure how to not further embarrass herself, Satchiko said the only thing that can minimize her mistakes. "Just...bear?" She smiled awkwardly. Surely that can't be what animal is, right?
"This bear was a rare specimen, very rare. In fact, it is believed to be the only one of its kind." Han Fei commented, beginning to lecture the meathead Kyoshi warrior on basic taxonomy. "Bosco was the pet and best friend of the 52th Earth King Kuei. He was the subject of interest by the university's head of zoology, who was tasked to find him a mate. Both the professor and the bear suffered a sorrowful ending."
"What do you mean?" Satchiko inquired.
"Well, the bear was eaten by an unfilial daughter of the King. As for the professor..." Han Fei paused to think, tucking his hands underneath those massive sleeves. "Hmm, strange, he actually never came back from his trip. So the midden aged university director of that time sacked him." He sighed. "Moving on."
They now arrived at an item frame, where three objects are being exhibited. An intimidating blue mask is hung in the middle, flanked with two duel broadswords. The face covering don't appear to resemble the ones used by Ba Sing Se's operas. A foreign exhibit perhaps?
"Ah, the Blue Sprit, an entity strange in all its form." Han Fei is proud of this special part of the collection. "A mysterious entity which no one knows who is truly behind the mask. Is he a human or a spirit? No one knows. What do you think about this individual."
"Heh, just like the Judge of Honghai." Satchiko remarked. "When I asked him for his real name, he doesn't answer."
"Oh, you met him?" Han Fei looked a bit surprised. "I must admit, even someone in my profession cannot understand him. Weird fellow, he never took off his helmet even he when sleeps."
"Well I'm not surprised. That person very is unpredictable sometimes." Satchiko looked at Han Fei, noticing something odd with the last part of what he said. Han Fei affirmed this assessment. But he also stressed that general's quirks is only surface level. Those that know him well would notice that the man in full iron can actually have a sense of humor.
"Even if he laughs, no one can see his mouth smiling." Satchiko countered.
"Yes. But to the people of Ba Sing Se, he still a symbol against the renegades and barbarians that exist outside our walls. With all the civil wars and humanitarian crises happening outside, his victory near the Western Air Temple is a much needed in a time of peril. Many say his victory against all odds are divine, a faint light in a sea of gloom. It's amusing how the common folks think. The masses believe he is favored by the Spirits themselves."
"Those mysterious things, those Kamuy." Satchiko seemed to be speaking to herself in her own tongue. Zoning out as Han Fei continued.
"He is useful to inspire and rise morale. Well, good thing our warriors look up to him. After all, he is very useful in keeping the raiders at bay."
"I don't know. I certainly don't feel inspired." As a Kyoshi warrior, she cannot see what made the Judge so respected amongst the other people. Perhaps she needed to learn more about the famous Battle of Honghai to understand the context. But to her, he is not an all perfect symbol. "There was a person from Jian Sin who wishes to become his student, but the Judge of Honghai flatly refused him."
"Is that so?" Han Fei said. He then tried to describe Liu, whom the director haven't met before. "Was he someone who have nothing to lose?"
"Indeed. His whole family is...gone. The war between Jian Sin and Siaw Jong took them."
Han Fei lamented. "General Old Iron have a certain penchant. Many generals and officials commented on his many unpredictable acts. But one things that stood out is his recruitment style. Men with nothing to lose. Last of his kin. Family massacred. Willing to fight to the end. Those with nowhere to go. With all the wantonness going on in the rest of the continent, there is no shortage of people like that for the general to pick from. In fact, there would be an ocean of them flocking to Ba Sing Se if travel on foot isn't so difficult." Clearly the central Earth Kingdom suffers from a geographical disadvantage. It's easier for a state to trade with boats rather than its in land neighbors. Bandits and civil wars made it nearly impossible to travel due to the political turmoil. Without the Kheshig and their bisons, the two sisters may have never made it to Ba Sing Se.
Han Fei decided to cease this conversation, believing to stray too far from what they were doing previously. After reviewing some more items such as everyday objects that exist during the Hundred Years War, they arrived at a dark and insignificant corner of the space. There was a painting protected behind glass, but not a single soul paid attention to it.
They both stared at it, with Satchiko pondering what in the name of Kyoshi did something so ugly even made it into the Royal Palace. All the timeless scroll artworks are created using ancient ink washing techniques, aesthetically beautiful nature scenes that are hard to replicate. But this artwork before her is like a children's drawing, presumably. Going from left to right, this is what she thinks the painter is trying to depict.
There is a rabbit person that can bend water, followed by some angry looking little kid. And then there is two angsty teenagers, one with spikey hair and another that looked very gloomy. Furthermore, there is a boy with wooden stick and a fan wielding girl that is presumably some sort of magician with fire coming out of her hands. Not too different from Satchiko's 'fire bursting out from an Elephant Koi's mouth' painting she made in class. Lastly, there is something that vaguely resembles a beetle. Ending the painting is a fat looking person rubbijg his stomach.
What is this painting even trying to convey? Is she too uneducated that she can't understand the subtleness and deeper meaning? She wanted to say out loud how pathetic the painter must be, but she knew it would hypocritical. After all, her own drawing skills are equally appalling.
"When I became the new director of this museum, all the artifacts and precious paintings handed down by our ancestors were lost." Han Fei sighed, picking up a somber tone. It's hard to understand how much resources and time were spent to recover many of it. There are probably still plenty of artifacts out there somewhere, in the hands of looters. "When I first walked through these empty halls, it was all striped clean, this painting was the only one that remains. Even if other people do not care about it, this unimpressive piece of parchment will always hold a special place in my heart. While it may be ugly, it taught me the under appreciated beauty in simplicity. No benefit is more constant than simplicity; no happiness more constant than peace." Han Fei brushed his mustache, appreciating this timeless masterpiece. "The painter never titled his work. I decided to call this piece The moment."
This might explain why this childlike scribble isn't discarded by the director. During chaos, the Royal Palace was raided by looters who use the opportunity to steal valuable goods. The rioters who entered here probably dismissed this unimpressive painting and left it alone, which was interpreted by Han Fei as a special sign. Perhaps the Kamuy prevented it from being stolen?
The more she looked at the piece of art, the more it felt like an insult to other artists around here. People like the Judge of Honghai would have been baffled underneath this iron mask, that a simple children's drawing is considered above his own?
"So, what do you think?" Han Fei asked the young girl. "The one who painted this picture is a very intelligent and clever man. Someone who despite all the challenges and drawbacks, managed to establish himself as a key figure of the world. The moment depicted by this glorious artwork is priceless, almost legendary. What feelings or thoughts does his artistic talent evoke in you, young lady."
Satchiko pondered, putting her hand on her chin. "Well, nothing very. My own drawing skill is just as terrible, if not more. But if I work on it hard enough, hopefully I can at least draw something decently. Like my Earth bending..."
"I see," Han Fei nodded lightly, accepting this response. "Hard working people should always be rewarded. Through rewards and punishments, it encourages us to strive to be a greater good to society. Now, allow me to show you the most prized exhibit of our museum."
...
Both arrived to the center of the museum walking area that is guarded by soldiers in brigandine. Here are objects that is related to the Royalty of the Earth Kingdom. A crowded green room dedicated to perhaps the most important treasure in the entire Earth Kingdom continent.
They slithered through many curious visitors, with Satchiko constantly apologizing whenever she stepped onto a foot by accident.
"Hey!" A women yelped. "My dress!"
"Sorry!" Satchiko quickly said. She have lost sight of Han Fei, who somehow ventured through the sea of people at ease. After making a final push, she inhaled a good amount of air. Raising her head up back again, she saw Han Fei standing in front of the crystal clear display. He removed his hat and pressed it to the chest, paying respect to the exhibit.
"Young lady, behold, the heirloom of the Earth Kingdom."
The Kyoshi warrior opened her eyes to what the director is referring to. Within the glass case marveled by everyone is a beautiful object crafted of pure jade stone. The color of the material is so green that any detailed carvings can be seen clearly. It has a small badgermole resting on a slab, exactly like two giant stone ones outside the Royal Palace's door. Essentially, it's a smaller version of a badgermole sculpture made of jade, but with the foundation being square shaped.
There are also words on the side saying.
Having received the Mandate from the spirits, may the Earth King lead a long and prosperous life.
Satchiko noticed that there is a list of names imprinted on the wall behind the official seal of the state. Fifty four of them, presumably all the Earth Monarchs. There it is, the name Wu lies at the very bottom. This is the man which is also one of the countless individuals belittled by the great Kheshig Khan. To Temujin, almost everyone can be look downed upon. In this case, Wu is described to be one of the perpetrators for Earth Kingdom's divisional turmoil and civil strife.
"When one of my subordinates returned with this priceless piece of treasure, no words can truly describe my emotions." Han Fei said sentimentally. "Its recovery have stifled my sadness, as the heirloom went back to the right hand."
"Is this used by the King?" Satchiko asked.
"Yes, indeed. The imperial seal is one of the most important thing that grants legitimacy to the Earth Kingdom's supreme ruler, solidifying their right on the throne. Without it, none can claim they rule over the whole nation. Countless wars and conflicts are fought just to obtain it from Ba Sing Se. Blood were spilled, brothers betraying each other. Many rebel leaders and lesser kings desired this seal such as-"
"Chin the Conqueror?" Satchiko said, catching the director off guard.
"Uh, yes. Very brilliant answer young lady. Chin wanted to control all of Earth Kingdom. But he cannot do that without obtaining legitimacy from this seal. Well, along with controlling this city of course. Anyway, because this seal has been passed down from the first Earth Monarch, it serves as a symbol, a token that cements a ruler's divine right to rule. Which is why despite it being just a piece of rock, its significant cannot be overstated. To hold it in your hand represents the owner being blessed by the spirits, handing the Earth Kingdom's ownership to a new dynasty and receiving the mandate. Now despite the states and lesser Kingdoms outside are still embroiled in their petty conflicts, not even the arrogant warlords of Siaw Jong and Jian Sin can deny this fact. Unless someone wants to challenge the Earth King's authority and the right to rule, then they must attack this city and take seal. Thankfully, no one follies with such ideas, yet."
"Wait, so if the seal is meant to represent the right to rule, why is it being placed in a glass display?" Satchiko questioned. Han Fei turned around, looking at her. She can tell that the grown up is not comfortable with what she is asking. "Isn't there suppose to be a King? Shouldn't this green seal be near his side to stamp the papers?" She remembered how her father always carries around a simple wooden seal as well, approving some paperwork to resolve petty disputes between fishermen. Usually it was the representative Ebisu who did the more 'hands on' methods to resolve the tension, but Hakaru have to write an official statement to end the feud. Although it was rarely used, as the role of a village chief never carries the same responsibility as a King. Their simple lifestyle meant the wooden seal the chieftains used was never something of great importance, just an convenient object carried to address simple daily problems. But for a sovereign? How could he or she even perform their duty without the badgermole seal?
"His majesty is on an important trip to Republic City," Han Fei calmly stated shortly. That is the place where the nefarious cult called the Acolytes of San Bao is protected. She knew very little about the world in general, which is imperative that she must know more about the mysterious city where the Earth King is located. Hopefully Tenzin and his family are still ok. When they eventually end their search for the Avatar, she prays that the spirit of Kyoshi watches over the air people in that city as well. "He has important duties to fulfill. But before his departure, he has graciously tasked me to look after his royal brooch." Both Han Fei and Satchiko came across a small table where a single earring is displayed. It's a golden piece of jewelry worn by Wu during his coronation. Since the looters have stolen the crown, the earring serves as a substitute. What confused her is that according to the information board she is reading, Wu's coronation was held in Republic City and not in Earth Kingdom capital city itself. This fact alone is questionable. She thought Ba Sing Se was the seat of the sovereign. If one does not control it or carries the seal by his side, is Wu very the ruler? Just what on earth is that man doing at Republic City?
A sudden rush of memory rushed to her mind, the Wu doll. It was a reminder of her failures in the town of Shang, when she witnessed the how the Acolytes of San Bao killed many of the inhabitants. Thankfully, she was spared the many horrific details. But it was frightening to her core. At that time, her false perception of a powerful warrior have never been any lower.
Before Satchiko got the chance to ask further. Han Fei lead her away from the room and headed straight to where the Keju ceremony will be held. Along the way they stopped temporarily at a statue of a man holding a round mirror, claimed to be the first museum curator of Ba Sing Se. He has long robes, with a long overflowing beard.
Han Fei stood in front, looking up at the statue that towers over him. Satchiko simply stood nearby as he once again demonstrates his profound knowledge in history. "Have you ever heard about the wise and talented Shen Buhai? He is my favorite Earth Kingdom philosopher, and my distant predecessor. He is a statesman and an offical to the forty sixth Earth King. During his time, the King's rule was unpopular and outdated. With Chin's rebellion and the substantial losses by the hands of government incompetency...and inaction, the people of course wanted change. A new government that supports their interests. But we can't have that without a strong willed and imperious Earth King being in the way can we?"
She can agree to this. Satchiko believe that those in power must be competent and kind enough to serve the people's interest. Unlike all the other complex history of the Earth Kingdom, she is actually very well versed about Kyoshi's saga with the forty sixth Earth King. When she was much young, her mother would always recite this important history of their founder in bedtime stories. Each time it finished, Satchiko only wanted to listen one more time, and Akahana is always happy to oblige to an eager toddler who wants to become a Kyoshi warrior. Based on her mother's story, the peasant uprising stems from the Earth King's inability to address the many challenges of his kingdom. His rule was unpopular and ineffective, and was unable to suppress Chin's military rebellion. The peasant uprising wishes to depose the monarch, and Avatar Kyoshi was summoned to quell it. But instead of obeying the command, Kyoshi forced the King to listen to the demands of the peasant. Appeasing the masses by reducing the power of the monarch so that balance can prevail over tyranny. Their founder also laid down some special foundations in order to safeguard the cultural heritages.
That last part was never explained thoroughly...
Nevertheless, this part of their founder's journey would be a huge part of Kyoshi's legacy. She reformed the monarchy to serve the people's interest, allowing the subjects to have their voice. It was repeatedly told by mothers to their children, hoping to inspire them about the world Kyoshi left them, one driven by justice and the will to right all wrongs.
Han Fei clearly have strong emotional attachments to Earth Kingdom's historical artifacts. Which is why he almost cried when he talked about how the peasant revolt also destroyed many ancient cultural sites such as statues, temples and old tombs of Kings. The lost of those are definitely unrecoverable when compared to the many artifacts showcased today. "Shen Buhai's greatest accomplishments was assisting Avatar Kyoshi by transforming the monarchy into a constitutional one. Thus limiting the amount of power a King may have. The cornerstone of this great reformation is a philosophy invented by him called Wu Wei."
"Wu what?" Satchiko sounded baffled.
After a careful detailed explanation, Han Fei described it as a philosophy that the ruler should rule the nation through inaction, or 'effortless action'. Essentially, it argues that the King must 'do nothing' even if he has the talent and wisdom. The King should play no administrative roles and conceal his intentions. Because by getting involved into the politics directing, it would hinder the monarch from actually ruling. Which is why Wu Wei proposes that the sovereign should supervise the government without interference, all the while maintaining perspective. There are obviously strong parallels with the concept of Neutral Jing, which also proposes 'doing nothing' until the right opportunity arrives.
"The ruler is like a mirror, reflecting light, doing nothing, and yet, beauty and ugliness present themselves. Being a scale establishing equilibrium, doing nothing, and yet causing lightness and heaviness to discover themselves." Han Fei stated, praising the supposedly beauty of this philosophy. "If the ruler's intelligence is displayed, self interested officals will prepare against it. If his lack of intelligence is displayed, they will delude him. If his wisdom is displayed, men will gloss over their own faults. If his lack of wisdom is displayed, they will hide from him. If his lack of desires is displayed, men will spy out his true desires. But if his desires are displayed, they will tempt him. Therefore an intelligent ruler would proclaim 'I cannot know them'. It is only by means of non-action that a ruler can control them. To not govern at all is to truly rule. Those are the wise words of Shen Buhai."
"But shouldn't the ruler at least do something useful?" Satchiko argued. It's hard to follow what exactly Wu Wei meant, so she did her best to interpret it based on her understanding. "If the ruler does absolutely nothing, what's the point of even having one?" While she cannot compare her own father to the King of the whole continent, she still felt it would be irresponsible for a leader to be complacent even if they have a will to provide changes that benefits the people. A leader exist to make people's lives better, not to just sit there and let the ministers do all the work. While she might not understand the many complexities when it comes to running a massive Kingdom, she still felt doing nothing is a recipe for disaster.
Han Fei closed his eyes, and sighed while shaking his head. He continued to guide her towards the main throne room. On his way, he try to make her see his point of view. "You can't make everyone loyal. Ruling over the subjects do not require loyalty. What truly matters is technique. The forty sixth monarch's greatest mistake is that he cannot hide the fact that he is indeed an incompetent leader, which prompted the people to revolt. If he knows that his reign is unpopular, than it's better to adapt a more effortless policy. Which was achieved anyway despite his resistance against Avatar Kyoshi. Why worry at all if the end result is going to be the same anyway?"
"But fate is unpredictable, you never know what will happen." Satchiko argued. "If leaders would know more about how everyone else live, I am sure they will become a better person and ruler in general."
"Very...idealistic I suppose. I should have expected that." Han Fei then went silent, and Satchiko doesn't know what he meant. People here truly live a very different life in the secluded walls of Ba Sing Se. Unlike her simple and rural village on Kyoshi island, people in this city are not always receptive to openly disclose the meaning behind their words. It's like talking with a stranger when compared to talking with a friend. Her fellow villagers are always friendly whenever she walked by. But people like Han Fei, although appear friendly, may possibly be amicable for the sake of formality. She can't help but feel he is withholding something as well.
As their small stroll concluded, they met up with Hudie. The Miao girl is standing next to a large crowd inside the massive corridor, towered by two enormous rectangular door.
"Why are everyone just standing there?" Satchiko asked. "Shouldn't they be going in?"
"The ceremony is not ready yet." Han Fei answered. "Well, by that I meant the food."
A part of her wanted to see if she can charge and throw a flying kick to the door, to see if she can open using a dramatic entrance. It's tempting for some reason. Of course in the face of so many delegations and visitors, such unruly act should not be performed.
"Now, we wait." Han Fei put his hands behind his back. And everyone stood with anticipation for the doors to open. In there is the throne room that houses the literal seat to the Earth King.
...
There were many stories told by their great grandmother. Tales about her adventures with fellow warriors outside the island during the One Hundred Year War.
The world is a vast and beautiful place, filled with brims of wonders numbered in the stars. Even if they were fighting, her great grandmother did visited many lands across the world.
There was the insurmountable vastness of the Serpent's pass, where a giant eel like creature resides. There is the Fire Nation, where the sight of their royal palace is adorned in an abundance amount of gold. While some of the stories definitely scared her when she was much younger, it is also one of the many things that inspired her interest of the outside world. She wanted see those places described, a world so different from her own little island off the coast of the mainland. Right now, she stood in the very place where one of her elderly mentor have passed by. Without those tales, she wouldn't have that insatiable desire to see the world, something which her little sister does not share.
"Great grandmother, are you seeing this?" Mayumi said to herself, staring at the giant empty throne that few can ever lay their eyes on. The expansiveness of the giant hall is a sight to marvel at. "To think me and Satchiko have made it this far from home."
She certainly never thought her journey would take her here, right in the figuritive heart of the continent and allowing her to witness the most secluded place of all. It is throne room of the Earth Monarchs, the place where all the past rulers have sat and reigned across the entire continent. Just a few months ago, she is only dreaming of traveling the world. Even for a reserved person, Mayumi would have screamed in excitement just by looking at the room itself.
Eighteen large stone pillars run down the entire length of the hall, each topped with intricately painted brackets and supports a corbel from which hangs a large green lantern. Diaphanous curtains are placed throughout the hall to draw attention to the earth monarch's throne, situated on a dais near the back of the room and accessed by nine stairs.
It was breathtaking. But the centerpiece of it all is the golden throne itself, built on a elevated platform that can be accessed with three ascending stairs. Behind it is a giant badgermole holding the Earth emblem. It is sacred, one that only the Earth Monarch can rest onto.
But now, it is just an empty throne. A beautifully decorated area without anyone besides Xuan Zang and a few other renown professors. They are standing right next to it, sorting out a few key paperworks before they officially ordaining the graduates and welcoming the visitors.
Speaking about the visitors, Mayumi realized just how much work is supposed to be done before they can finally open those massive doors. If what the guard in brigandine said is correct, than the amount of food they must prepare should be enough to feed at least five hundred guests, most of which came from wealthy background of powerful families. Which is why their appetite can only handle the most delectable delicacy. Jin's pressure is at an all time high, the elderly woman commands all the chefs and waitresses, not skipping over a single detail of preparation.
Jin's roast duck recipe follows a similar procedure to how all the other restaurants prepare this iconic dish.
Preparation begin when the animal is born. They must be raised in a free ranged environment. After forty five days, they are force fed four times a day for the next twenty. This allows the ducks to be fatter. After it is killed and the feathers plucked, then blanched in boiling hot water for two to three minutes before it is hung up to dry, the skin would tighten. In the process, runny syrup would glaze the surface. It would then be marinaded with soy sauce. Maltose would be applied inside and out.
Multiple ovens were assembled within the room, each can roast up to twenty turtleducks at the same time with an open fire fueled by hardwood from peach or pear trees. They are dangled right near the fire, melting the fat and creating that delicious and crispy skin. But one integral part of Jin's secret recipe that separates her from competition is never revealed. Not even the chefs know about it.
Jin directed all of them to face away from the ovens. Mayumi did too, along with her hot tempered co-worker Xiao Qing. The dishwasher now 'promoted' waitress can hear Jin pullout a bag of spice. Being an elite warrior trained in the arts of stealth, she can vaguely guess what her employer is doing without using sight.
"I think she is applying some sort of powder to the turtleducks." Mayumi whispered quietly to Xiao Qing, who is indifferent about what ingredients her boss is using. Like Mayumi, she too have an ordinary outfit. The others are all wearing their finest silk dress while Mayumi only having a poorly repaired kimono instead. Despite Jin's offer to help buy a new dress for this special occasion, Mayumi kindly declined, preferring to not burden her employer any more than it is needed. Besides, she did brought one interesting object that can at least help avert some judging eyes. Underneath one of the serving tables they brought to the Royal Palace, Mayumi stored that umbrella gifted by the stranger with white. It is beautiful enough that it might help her ward off attention. She might not even need it today, considering how both she and Te Gaogui can just meet privately in one of the gardens outside. But she will focus on the task at hand now.
Whenever a customer orders a Ba Sing Se roast duck from the eatery, Grandma Jin would always apply the 'secret ingredient' before giving it to the eaters. Afterwards, the chef would pull out the meat and cut them into pieces and prepare it in the elegant style that only the folks of Ba Sing Se knows how to enjoy
"It's done!" Jin said. The turtleducks were removed from the oven by the chefs. Mayumi looked at the bright red color of the skin, that crispy part is what attracts the hungry stomach, and the tender meat inside is what solidifies it.
As the chefs carved the meat up after removing it from the shell, the crisp skin and meat are separated. Using spring pancake wraps, the meat, skin and some spring onions are all rolled up together. The final piece for this dish would be the hoisin sauce, used to dip the whole wrap in before devouring it.
And this is how standard Ba Sing Se ducks are prepared in most restaurants. But what truly separates Jin's dish is probably that secret spice being applied at the last minute.
As Mayumi is tasked to hold cater to the visitors, she cannot help but notice the strong aroma of the spice. She hadn't had lunch, which meant it is very tempting to just grab a wrap of Ba Sing Se duck and stuff it into her mouth.
"Oh look, I think they are opening the doors!" One of the waitresses in an elegant dress squeaked, pointing to the two brigandine guards slowly pulling the massive handles. It didn't took long until everyone else filed into the room, being cushioned by the warm soothing green lantern lights that dimly emits the space. That was their signal. Every waitresses began to serve the ducks to visitors. People are just standing around, socializing about their immense wealth or how beautiful and talented their children are. Occasionally, Mayumi would carrying a tray of food, distributing the Ba Sing Se duck wraps as well as pouring some Baijiu wine in small cups. Comparing this to the intensity of working in the kitchen, being a waitress is much less demanding. She certainly don't have endure the heat, but getting use to the judging glances thrown by others would be something she need to some adjusting to.
She brightened her face immediately after noticing her sister, who is walking in a controlled pace to resist the urge to run. It's great to see her little sister visiting the museum as well. But of course, she must not be distracted by this event. For the main purpose of her being here is to speak with Te Gaogui about assisting Satchiko's education. With the help of the noble lady, surely her sister can master Earth Bending.
"Hey Mayumi, is everything going well?" Satchiko asked, scanning for any sign that her sister was mistreated.
"All good sister." Mayumi reassured. "Here, have a wrap. This is Grandma Jin's best recipe, Ba Sing Se duck." Just as she handed one to Satchiko, her sister looked hesitant. Her eyebrows frowned a bit at the site of this food.
"This meat is from a turtleduck?" Satchiko asked, noticing the empty shells on the nearby serving tables. She looked bewildered as the chefs are curving up brazed turtleducks in order for the waitresses to make more wraps out of it." Thank you, but I will try something else." Obviously secretly keeping a turtleduck in her dorm have cultivated difficult feelings when confronted with this famous meat dish. How can Satchiko ever look at the that duckling again after consuming her own kind? Unfortunately, Jin's staff were only hired to serve this one single staple of the city, along with the barley baijiu wine. Why would any of the guests want to savour other dishes if the Ba Sing Se duck is the best one?
"It's fine Mayumi, I'm not very that hu-" Satchiko's stomach disagrees, it made a long rumbling sound, forcing her to concede. "Do you guys have anything else I can eat? Any fish?"
It was met with Mayumi shaking her head. Satchiko sighed in defeat. Looks like she will have to endure it for a while. Despite Mayumi insisting her to just take one bite out of the wrap, it still wouldn't do. Maybe enduring hunger is better than facing guilt.
"By the way Mayumi, I have met with the Museum director, he showed me some artifacts and paintings around the place." Satchiko proclaimed. After a detail recounting about all the interesting and historical exibits Han Fei showed her, Mayumi revealed her concerns.
"Sister, I don't mean to be rude, but you know you shouldn't be talking to strangers. We need to make ensure that we retain a minimal presence here, understand?" Although no outsiders can recognize their identity without those iconic red and white face paints, Mayumi stressed that minimal contact is the best way to not attract suspicion. Especially when they have wanted posters around the continent. The less people who have saw them wearing Kyoshi warrior uniforms, the better.
"I know, but it's hard. That director just wouldn't leave me alone!"
"Where is that director?" Mayumi kept her eyes peeled, looking for someone who might be Han Fei. They both scanned the room repeatedly, but that Ganjinese is no where to be found. "Didn't he came into here with you?"
"He was," Satchiko replied. "This is weird, he keeps disappearing. It's as if he has the power to go through walls and come through the other side."
They both felt unease despite the auspicious mood of the guests. Even though everything seems normal, something just doesn't feel right here...
"Splendid! I see that the Ba Sing Se roast ducks are ready, don't mind if I do." Han Fei casually grabbed a wrap from the tray Mayumi is holding. He dipped in a the bowl of sweat bean sauce, then sank his teeth into the crispy meat. "I suppose I say for all that Grandma Jin have certainly exceeded all expectations. This indeed is a great investment!"
Jin came over and bowed. "It is our eatery's greatest honor to be part of the grand Keju ceremony!"
As both Han Fei continued to reward Jin with more praises. They watched cautiously. The reason why they are on alert is because both cannot sense Han Fei's presence. As warriors trained in the arts of stealth, no common folk can enact a surprise attack and succeed.
"Hey Mayumi, would you please pour a cup of wine to the good sir?" Jin called cheerfully from behind. Both sisters stopped, not moving an inch. Mayumi quickly responded by answering Jin's request.
"Yes madam," she slowly went over and poured some wine and served it to Han Fei. Without speaking, Satchiko arrived next to her. As the director savored the sour and sharp sting of the liquor, he watched all the guests, noticing that not all are here.
From the entrance, the four of them heard footsteps of more people coming through. Some military officers and ministers entered, not much people cared for them at all. Just some uniformed generals of Ba Sing Se's garrison the protected the walls from bandits. As if the renegades would even dare to assault the armed bastion directly. But one figure forced the guests to turn up their attention. A tall imposing man with a face of iron entered the gates. Even without his massive glaive, it's not that hard to recognize him.
Some fathers would berate their spoiled and physically weak son, who wouldn't even dare to lift knife. Many chattered, reminiscing the countless battles and campaigns outside the walls. But all would agree that they are in awe to be in this war hero's mighty presence. For his legendary feat near the Western Air Temple is nothing a mere regular commander can replicate. The Battle of Honghai is afterall what made him known throughout the world.
"Well, well, well!" Han Fei brightened. "I see that the architect of Honghai beach is here. Such an auspicious sight."
"Yeah...him..." Satchiko said with a low voice, she isn't that exited like the others. The general's presence is a great addition to the event. Rarely do the citizens of the Upper Ring can see the very man who is said to have vanquished a pirate army much bigger than his.
"The Judge of Honghai, what a lovely title. Even though there is plenty more we can use. My favorite one certainly the title of the Tortoise. Slow but calculated. Any daofei who have heard of his name would know not to face him. But that's not their choice is it? If that man wanted to hunt down a bandit lord, than there is truly no escape. Ever since what happened on the beaches near the Western Air Temple, people began to think the reason why is so successful, is that he favored by the spirits themselves."
"But, he doesn't look like someone who would be favored by the Kamuy." Satchiko protested to Han Fei's observations." I have talked with him before, trust me. He doesn't even respect the Avatar let alone respecting the-"
Mayumi gently tugged Satchiko's dress, making her stop. "Don't be rude. Keep it respectful!" Satchiko obliged, ceasing her opinionated assault on the Judge of Honghai's quirkiness.
"No need to be so restrictive," Han Fei commented, easing some of Mayumi's pressure to control Satchiko's underdeveloped manners. "It very doesn't matter what she says about him. He is famous, but still a symbol. An idealized commander to inspired all those around him. The only people who truly knows him are those whom he spent the most time with."
"Do you mean his family?" Mayumi asked, speaking out of line. Although she knew the director wouldn't mind a simple waitress expressing her thoughts. "Family is the most important thing to a person. Without one, you wouldn't be complete."
Han Fei breathed in deeply, and let it out. They took it as a sign that not all is well for the Northern Earth Kingdom's most capable general. "The iron faced general have countless sons, they are soldiers that serve under his banner. He receives them, nurtures them, and then loses them. I know that feeling well. Sigh."
Mayumi of course a little bit surprised by this statement. Satchiko also inquired more about two particular individuals, a water-bender woman and a fire-bending man with a 'third eye'.
"I presume you are speaking to two of the general's closest associates." Han Fei said. "And speaking of the spirits, there they are."
The introduction of two foreign looking individuals have certainly incurred curiosity of the gathering guests. Since most people here rarely saw people from the other nations, some would say that seeing one is a sign of good luck.
Jang, wearing his full suit of armor marched into the hall. He still kept his trident spear close to his chest, as if there is no distinction between going on a battlefield and going to a party. His sharp facial features and striking yellow eyes set him apart from the locals. Brandishing an over serious demeanor, his menace and still expression makes it hard for people to even approach him. If that doesn't scare off his enemies, the 'third eye' on his forehead definitely will. Once he removed his winged helmet and put it on the table, the rest of his head is exposed. Unlike the other topknot hairstyle common in the Earth Kingdom, Jang's hairstyle is pulled more to the center. A large black headband covers his forehead, holding additional hair in place while also not obscuring that 'third eye' tattoo.
"People called him the Vermillion Bird." Han Fei said, almost fascinated by Jang. "Skilled with the art of spear. He is a feared warrior with a rare and dangerous Fire-bending technique. Such is the right hand man to the most powerful warrior of the Northern Earth Kingdom, and I regard his prowess as only second to the Judge of Honghai himself. He is a young talent who came from across the ocean. Some said he once served under the Fire Nation military of the highest order, directly working underneath Lord Zuko. But due to a variety of reasons, the bird decided to flew from his nest. Who knows? Maybe eventually he would replace the Judge of Honghai as the greatest general of our city."
"He doesn't look too friendly," Satchiko scoffed. The young girl is still distrustful of the fire people. Experience can often shape a person's view in many ways they did not realize. In her eyes, fire is a very potent element, a very destructive one as well. The young Kyoshi warrior's many negative encounters have soured her perception of this dangerous element. "Besides from what I have heard, that man wants to be a general of his homeland. I doubt he would stay in Ba Sing Se for long."
"Satchiko, watch where you are going with this." Mayumi warned. "We are not here to stir up any trouble, remember?" Satchiko only nodded reluctantly, agreeing to be civil in this gathering event. But the hidden tension is still there.
"It's a shame that he wanted to one day return to the Fire Nation," Han Fei is saddened about this fact. "While he is not the Judge of Honghai, the Vermillion Bird have proven to be a fierce fighter. If he wanted to kill an enemy using his full strength, I doubt his foes would last more than ten seconds. If there is anyone that can surpass the Judge of Honghai, it would be Jang. He is still young. Even in his springtime of youth, I would say his powers are not too far behind the Judge himself."
Those words felt concerning. Han Fei knows plently. If what he said is true than clearly Jang was holding back when Satchiko first attacked him. They still don't know what this 'rare fire-bending' is. Could that 'third eye' on Jang's forehead be an indication? Now that they thought about it, Jang never fire bend once.
Jin chuckled. "Don't judge a book by its cover young girl." She advised to Satchiko. "Sometimes, precious gem stones hide themselves within a piece of rock. You just have to know how to look through the obscurity."
"Rrrrriigghht," Satchiko responded skeptically. She then noticed at that Northern Water Tribe lady. The thought of why she lost all those fingers have lingered around her head, which is one of the reasons why she is suspicious about the three eyed fire-bender. "What about that person next to him?"
"Who?" Han Fei asked.
"That water lady without any fingers, what's up with her?" She noticed Mayuimi glaring at her, silently shaking her head furiously. The Judge of Honghai specifically requested them to not be nosy about other people.
Sedna walked with Jang. For this special occasion, the Water Tribe woman wore a thick layer coat and cap made from blue and white fur. The robe is so long that is touches the ground. But to be candid, the same also applies to many fine ladies here. The cap she wore is made of a wooly material, encasing everything but he face. The necklace and two hair loopies is the only accessory she brought. It's interesting how Sedna isn't experiencing hyperthermia. The spring might be longer here in Ba Sing Se, but no locals here are sane enough to wear winter clothing.
"Hmmm, there isn't very that much we know other than her peculiar appearance." Han Fei admitted, referring to the lack of fingers of Sedna. Being a presumably high ranking member who is knowledgeable of the many big names, even he isn't certain of the full origin. "The only thing I know is that she appeared after the Battle of Honghai beach, a close companion of lieutenant Jang. Other than that, nothing much I know of."
"I see..." Satchiko narrowed her eyelid. From here, she watched as Sedna is trying her absolute best, attempting to hold a duck wrap with her two fingerless hands. That woman wanted to feed Jang's war hound, who smiling with its tongue out and waiting patiently. Jang ended up helping her finishing this insignificant task, before both of them went off and talked with other guests. Although this scene appears nothing unusual, Satchiko is mostly suspicious. She doesn't know why she felt uneasy about those two, those foreigners. She always have a vague understanding of the world, but the knowledge that the fire and water people have their own lands across the sea is a well known fact. And they are not always the most friendly people, especially the dangerous fire-benders and the deranged Shui. The latter of which she still doesn't understand how their own bodies can be manipulated. Whenever she thought about the element of fire and water, she would always be on alert.
But the Kheshig Khanate are the same, were they not? Those nomads also look foreign, whose way of life are strange and unfamiliar. Yet, she considers them a dependable ally despite their excessive crudeness, an aspect she will never agree to. And what about Earth benders? They are not necessary good people either. The Acolytes of San Bao employed a lot of nefarious benders in the attack of Shang.
A lone errand boy paced to their little group. He bowed and handed Han Fei a piece of parchment. "S-Sir, I am sorry to report. But Judge Bao will not be attending."
"Reasons?" Han Fei smiled, masking his displeasure VERY well. Judge Bao is a prefect who operates a courthouse in the Lower Ring. Known for his dark skinned appearance and a 'moon' on his forehead, he is praised for being a righteous man who upholds justice and fairness for the poor and vulnerable citizens. Not even the wealthiest Earth Kingdom household would dare to face Bao, knowing that the judge cannot be bribed or intimidated. Both lowly methods would only be used as evidence for the final court session. Based on the words of the errand boy, the Judge will not be attending the Keju ceremony in order to gather evidence to sentence the White Sparrow bandits captured. A huge time consuming part of it would be searching and arranging any eye witnesses to appear on court. Binmayong soldiers, families of the villagers massacred by the bandits, the tribe of refugee scavengers and the Kheshig nomads.
"Excuse me as I handle a few issues." The director left them. He slowly made his way to the exit, with Jin herself returning to monitor the chefs as they prepare more brazed ducks.
The presence of the room seemed to have lowered with custodian's absence. But it was replaced with the might of an iron encased general, who inserted himself into their little conversation bubble.
"Sir, would like like to have a Ba Sing Se duck wrap?" Mayumi offered, not revealing the fact that they have met before. Although he probably would have figured it out by now.
The general pulled out a small copper knife, presumably another one of his battlefield collectables. He carefully stabbed a duck wrap, dipped it with some hiosin sauce and delivered into the gap of his helmet's mask. A loud swallowing sound can be heard. But it felt difficult and uncomfortable, as if he is trying to force his food down the throat.
"You know. Before I arrive here, I always thought that Ba Sing Se ducks were eaten just as it is, simple plain duck meat." The Judge of Honghai said. There is obviously a common misconception about this famous dish. Even though the rest of the world have heard much about Ba Sing Se's delectable cuisine, many didn't consider that the brazed duck is eaten using a spring pancake wrap dipped in sweat bean sauce. Perhaps it is a more 'cultured' way that folks here like to establish to the world. "No matter, at least the ones I fed my troops do not contain any glittery excessiveness." He turned to Satchiko. "Enjoying the show? I see a lot of outsiders here."
"It's not like we have a choice." Satchiko explained. She quickly revealed to the general how all the exchange students in her cohort are invited. This means many of those from the various states are present, preparing to witness the Keju examination. She quickly explained about Xuan Zang's desire for peace and unity between the states, using the students to foster peace.
"Xuan Zang, being the usual optimistic I see. Children are the future, if they get along, maybe the states will as well. Hmph, even if that is a long shot, if it works I won't stop that monk." The idea of using exchange students to forge peace and unity between the warring Earth Kingdom states is not a completely foolish one. In theory, if everyone here gets along, so will the independent Earth Kingdom states if these students become respective leaders of their homeland. But Satchiko also uncovered something that might undermine this program. All the students she has met in her class have parents who are either insignificant village leaders like her father or just a mayor of some small rundown town. Without students who are relatives to the warlords themselves, how can Xuan Zang's best intentions ever bare fruit? Each day, countless die from senseless wars between the states, how much longer can they wait until it ends? Or is Xuan Zang's program to 'bring together' the different Earth Kingdom lands just an asinine game, denying the existence of humanity's lowest warlike instinct? Only time will tell.
Satchiko wished that the program she enrolled in could help more on her bending. But at the same time, the issue of the civil wars and suffering in the Earth Kingdom is always prominent on her mind. "The other day, there were two students who were fighting. Jian Sin and Siaw Jong they were from. When I stopped them from fighting, I knew it wouldn't do anything in the long run. If those two met again, they will surely attack each other again."
"It's those two, again. Trust me, this certainly isn't the first time it has happened within the walls. Years ago, there was a large brawl in the lower rings. Refugees from both sides met each other. You know what would happen, so I will not elaborate further." The general, being the seasoned veteran he is, knew plenty about the Jian Sin and Siaw Jong war. He claimed that the conflict is the longest one, beginning since the era when Wu divided the Earth Kingdom into countless states. "The reason why they fight is complicated, it will not be undone in a day. You can stop a fight, but the war will go on. You may be a strong warrior, but this is much larger than you. The war is already happening before you were even born."
Mayumi casted a glance at Satchiko. The older sister is being very quiet after finding out that the Judge of Honghai knows of Satchiko's identity. It would be disastrous if this general got his hands on that wanted poster. The lucrative reward is probably enough to incentivize anyone to capture the Kyoshi warriors.
"But how would you handle it the war between Jian Sin and Siaw Jong?" Satchiko challenged. She wanted to know how would Judge would approach it. If this person truly is someone considered a war hero by Ba Sing Se and majority of Northern Earth Kingdom, than she wanted to test how deep does still running water go?"
The Judge thought long and hard underneath that lion-turtle helmet of his. With the iron mask concealing the expression, no one can tell how much effort he is investing into a response. People like Temujin probably would just leave the whole affair alone. For it is no concern for the Kheshig nomads. But the two quarreling states are on Ba Sing Se's doorsteps, with only a tiny desert separating them. If one day the Judge is forced to engage Siaw Jong and Jian Sin for whatever reason, what kind of conflict would that look like?
"Ba Sing Se has so far remained neutral in the squabbles of those warring states, especially the Siaw Jong and Jian Sin's feud. There are no plans to wage war against them. But let's pretend my superiors sent me to 'handle' them both. I would prefer to bring all the perpetrators of their childish game and deliver justice upon them." Whatever this 'justice' is, he doesn't elaborate. The man continued to eat few more Ba Sing Se duck wraps until he turned shifted his gaze to the entrance. "And speaking of my superiors, there is three of them coming right now."
Satchiko and Mayumi both looked at the entrance. There lies high ranking generals wearing a style of cord and plaque similar to what the Judge wears. Thick pauldrons with shapes of lionturtle heads and a green cap that covers their back. However, unlike him, all three newcomers are less armored. Without an helmet, their exposed topknots came with a xiao guan headpiece, an adornment that symbolizes their origins of an influential household. No boots or shoes like the metal one worn by the judge, instead they walked in barefoot, a sign that they are Earthbenders. The individual armor pieces also lacks the mountain scale patterns favoured by the Judge and his Bingmayong.
One them noticeably have a sheathed jian strapped on his belt. It looked considerably beautiful and well crafted. However, even a village girl like Satchiko can notice the rustiness of the handle, a sign of the sword's incredible age or the owner's laziness for maintenance. But she believes more in the latter. A sword that has fallen into disrepair is a sword that have never seen much action.
"That is Ximen Pan, one of the council of five. He is responsible for Ba Sing Se's navy, but instead they made him guard the western walls. I guard the south along with a few more generals in the area." The Judge explained to Satchiko, who vaguely remembers this piece of information in the books. The council of five are made up of five high ranking commanders who oversaw all military operations across the Earth Kingdom. Well, now they clearly are just commanders within Ba Sing Se only. "You see that sword on his belt? It was passed down whenever a new admiral takes over the role, to remind him about the destruction of Earth Kingdom's navy at the hands of the Fifth Nation pirates. A long time ago, the last admiral of Ba Sing Se lost his life in a duel against a warlord named Tagaka. She was the leader of the pirate fleet who raided Earth Kingdom's eastern coasts. That sword was her prize, until it was recovered following their downfall. Quite a beauty, that blade would certainly make a fine piece for my collection."
"Wait, why would they make that man guard the western walls if he is supposed work with ships?" Satchiko asked. "Doesn't he have a navy to look after?"
The Judge stared at her and shook his head. "What navy? All we have are wooden junks and some fishing boat borrowed from peasants. In fact, the general-"
"It's admiral Sangui for you. As a three thousand men commander, you should have learnt how to address those above you with proper titles, Judge of Honghai." Ximen Pan warned, displeased by the judge's behavior. Mayumi walked carefully walked near the admiral, holding the plate of Ba Sing Se duck, indicating for him to take one. But he scoffed in annoyance, prompting the waitress to took a few steps backwards.
"Admiral Sangui...hmm, very well, forgive me then. I certainly don't want to disrespect our esteemed admiral who keep our coasts safe from the pirates. With you around, Ba Sing Se's shorelines are free from any sea daofei from the icy north." The Judge of Honghai's words are clearly dishonest, subtly undermining the admiral's office. A golden rule in a military hierarchy is to never outshine one's superior. Both sisters slowly backed away, sensing thickening tension between the two. Even the other guests can feel it, with Jang gripping his trident tighter just in case.
"Don't patronize me!" Ximen Pan muttered darkly. "Have you forgotten whose ship you used to travel to the Western Air temple? You think a foot army would have made it in time to save those bald headed nuns?"
"Not all of them are bald heads," the Judge casually countered. "While I am unimpressed with the shallow air-benders that reside there, the wisdoms of the air acolyte nuns are not to be taken lightly."
All eyes beamed on them. Many guests backed away, in fear that the two Earth Benders might destroy the ceiling in the collateral. Xuan Zang and his fellow professors also paid attention, not dare to move an inch. A member of the council of five facing off against a famous hero of the Northern Earth Kingdom. It's clear that there is a sense of competition and jealousy between the two. The battle of Honghai is an epic moment in history where the Judge of Honghai gained his name. Using a land army, he vanquished the vicious horde lead by the pirate lord Anguta, who intends to raid the vulnerable Western Air temple. Knowing that the Earth Kingdom have a near non-existent navy, the defenders chose not to face Anguta on water. Luring the renegades onto the dry sandy shores, Ba Sing Se's army managed to defeat the much larger invaders. While such a feat have granted praise and fame to the one commanding the land army, many questions are raised about the Earth Kingdom's already pathetic navy. If even a small detachment of land dwelling men is powerful enough to destroy the bloodthirsty Anguta, then there certainly is no purpose for a navy.
Mayumi nudged Satchiko's shoulders, indicating that both of them should step back a little. Luckily, they are replaced by the head of the council of five, general Liu.
Another person also named Liu.
The third man came with a thick beard and ill temper tried to mediate, while at the same time trying to keeping his yelling at an acceptable level. As if that would not draw more ire from the affluent folks, who see these military men as rowdy and troublemakers.
"Don't get involved, look the other way sister." Mayumi said as she guided Satchiko to throne room's corner. Hiding behind the pillar, she begin to discuss more about their priorities in today's event. If there is anyone who can help with Satchiko's literature skills and Earthbending, then it's definitely the person they are after. "Remember, I will try to meet with Lady Te after her inauguration as the new Zhuangyuan. Afterwards, we will find a garden to discuss whether or not she can help you. I want you to show up at the meeting. When you see her, be courteous ok?"
"Uh, sure." Satchiko responded obediently. Although she still haven't told Mayumi about Te Gaogui's failure to attain first place in the civil service examination. Despite her sister's respect towards Te, she herself is still skeptical about this noble lady being any help. Everyone knows a scholar's landmark achievement is taking a student. It demonstrates that they are wise enough to pass on knowledge to others. While Te Gaogui may be willing to take a personal student after her whole landmark achievement, one great uncertainty still remains. Is Lady Te an Earth bender?
"Now, rejoin your friends and enjoy the party." Mayumi advised. "I will call you later after I am able to meet with Lady Te privately."
"Y-Yeah." Satchiko responded, not exited at all about the prospect.
...
Ximen Pan, also known as general Sangui, almost lost his breathe after a long angry rant. It was received with the usual snarling but silent iron mask worn by the Judge of Honghai.
"You done yet?" General Liu asked in a thick accent. "The roast ducks are probably cold now!"
Ximen Pan muttered a few curses. The Judge of Honghai suspiciously stood silent as a statue, not bandying at all. But even without speaking, many onlookers already made up their mind that the general who defeated the pirate lord Anguta on Honghai beach worth much more than his 'superior' naval officer. The world is often unfair, where people who are less capable are being positioned to a higher role.
The Judge of Honghai went over to the table, trying to find something to drink. "Where is the tea?" He demanded. Wine don't seem to interest him as much as the leaves boiled into water. Xiao Qing came over and poured him a cup. He slurped it in, seemingly not caring much about the naval officer at all. "Oloong tea, not bad. But it will never match up with the brew of the Jasmine Dragon." He turned around, facing general Sangui." I believe we should continue after this event, don't you agree?"
"Absolutely agree!" General Liu answered first. He helped himself with some food, savoring the crispy surface of the duck meat. It seems that not even the head of the council himself wanted to quarrel any further. "Say, didn't your son also partook in the Keju?" He asked Ximen Pan.
The admiral raised his head, recomposing himself. "Indeed he is!" He proudly stated. "I suppose that eventually he would outrank even me. Ha! It's like the spirits themselves have blessed the Ximen family with another talented scholar!"
The Keju is the only way to advance a person's political career. Unlike military commanders who can alternatively attain the title of general through battlefield performance. A government official's beginning status is only determined by what place one attain from the exam. The higher one scores, the better the position. Everyone desires the title of Zhuangyuan. But even getting into the top three is a miracle by itself. From there on, Ximen Qing will enjoy an elevated position in the bureaucracy. His career will certainly advance to tremendous heights.
But he will never reach the peak of the tall mountain, which is reserved for the grand Zhuangyuan only. In Ba Sing Se, using its Keju system, the playing field is in theory even. Wealthy heirs and low born peasant are supposed to have the same opportunity. Furthermore, no matter how prestigious or influential the Ximen family is, there will always be someone daring enough to humiliate them.
There is a 'game' played by high society citizens every single day, an unwritten rule they must adhere to. Flowery words and subtle insults filled with sophisticated idioms while not showing one's true intent only covers the surface level of interaction. They are all on a stage, competing for prestige and fame so that those below can envy, admire or even submit to the winner. Most commoners are too afraid to face Ximen Qing's unruly behavior. But some lowborn men are either too good at adapting high society culture, or too indifferent to play this masquerade.
"Good tree produces good fruit, bad tree does the opposite." The Judge of Honghai remarked as he gently slurped a hot cup of oloong tea. "Your son has quite a rather problematic hobby, I hope he doesn't show it tonight. Would be painful to watch the young men losing their sanity. If I can offer one word of advice. Your son would be wise to not dishonor my trusted lieutenant, lest Ximen Qing wish to never enjoy worldly pleasures again."
"Oh very?" Ximen Pan responded smugly. Not ashamed at all about his son's vulgarity. But why should anyone fear repercussion if they are the most prestigious family only second to the Beifongs?
From here, Jang is glaring at them. His eyes narrowed more than usual.
"My son can take whoever he pleases. He sees someone fancy, he gets her. Some lowly ice barbarian are not his taste. Remember, he is not forcing anyone. It's more like digging a trap and the target willingly walks into it." He gulped down a mouthful of wine, not caring about the potency of the drink." Women are all the same. They pretend to be loyal loving people. Yet the moment a golden opportunity presents itself, they chose to leave you on their own intuition, defiling their integrity for the sake of vanity." He smiled darkly at the war hero. "Ximen Qing has the foresight to make any women his. It's all about power. The ability to take what you want from others."
The notorious behavior of the young Ximen Qing is infamous. He is a shameless womanizer that invests the Upper Ring like a weed. Words about the young nobleman's behavior have spilled from the inner district like a violent bursted dam, even the soldiers stationed at the outer walls know about his disgusting endeavors. Just how many relationships, childhood romantic bonds and loving families have he ruined for the sake of wicked desires?
This isn't just a simple case of disloyalty to one's own spouse. This is more.
Faithful wives would betray their hardworking husbands, ruining their marriage of many years andleaving their children with a broken home.
Two younger lovers from childhood who have endured years of tribulation, hardship and professed undying loyalty to each other. They swore to stood by each other's side, all of that went down the drain when Ximen Qing torn it apart. And for what?
The modest head lady of a wealthy Upper Ring household have been discovered to be unfaithful? Only disgrace and dishonor awaits for the woman. People will mock the family as well. All the in-laws who have spoken highly of her well mannered societal behavior will asked themselves, how can they be so blind? Why is the mother of their clan next generation willing to abandon all her duties and marital vows?
Disgust is an understatement. So much for the Upper Ring's citizens boasting about their noble values. They are not that different from the commoners, behaving like wild animals but with lavish clothing as disguises.
The most insulting part is that he never forced anyone to dismantle the relationship between a loving couple. No, that would certainly be illegal and borderline treasonous. His tactics mostly involve making women willingly engage in promiscuous activities, corrupting them until they became someone else. Afterwards, he couldn't care less about the fate of those women, who mostly can no longer face their families after all the betrayal and unchasity.
But why is he keep doing this? What can Ximen Qing even gain by seducing women and inducing chaos into the other people's marital vows and relationship? He have everything. Wealth, influence and status as the heir to the Ximen family's seat of power. Sowing so much chaos into other's livelihood would only damper his own future marriage, assuming he even views it as a serious prt of their family. But perhaps the biggest question of all, how can someone so indecent managed to make it to third place holder? If someone so vulgar comes a high ranking official, then the wives of commoners and upper ring are not the only ones at risk.
"Power is what is desired by all. It is invisible, yet still we know plenty of it." Sangui smiled, believing that there is still another way to sow chaos into Judge's calmness. As a military commander who have served for as long as the iron clad hero, Sangui is not stranger to what the Bingmayong and its leader stand for. "It's similar to plunder and pillaging some insignificant village of low born peasants, cutting out their tongue and burning them alive. To exert your power and demoralize others. To show that you can take something from them and they can do nothing about it. This is what I think all should strive towards. Those who cannot safeguard what belongs to them should not be allowed to keep it at all. The same goes to people."
A loud crack can be heard, but small enough that the three's conversation is still contained from the other partygoers. Both Sangui and Liu traced it from the porcelain teacup the iron masked general is holding. It wasn't bending, it was just his left hand applying too much force.
With heavy breathing through the mask, he emitted a very heavy presence. He stormed towards the direction of Sangui. The admiral backstepped, hands bolted to the handle of his jian in case he needed to use it. Even the other gatherers nearby have noticed this silent but rising killing intent. Rarely do the hero known as the Judge of Honghai became spurred on by words.
General Liu quickly halted the judge by placing his hand on the man's chest, implying him to not act with rash. If a massive brawl of Earth bending transpired in the presence of so many important visitors, nothing good comes out of it. This is the throne room, and they are in the Keju ceremony. With so many members of influential households gathered in one place, making a huge commotion is enough to threaten all of their military ranks. This is compounded by the fact that Ximen Pan is the head of an earth Kingdom clan himself, and both Liu and the Judge of Honghai don't exactly have powerful families backing them. Sure, the Liu clan might have ruled over the Earth Kingdom in a previous dynasty and created its first golden age. But there are countless people with the name Liu all over the world. Most are not even related. The word Liu is now nothing more but a shadow of itself. Unlike the Beifongs, it bears little weight in society.
"Not in here," general Liu whispered. He stared into the pitch dark of the lion turtle helmet, assuming that the war hero is at least prudent enough to let the admiral's remark slide. Earth Kingdom generals are strong practitioners of neutral Jing, doing nothing until the right opportunity presents itself. Many war strategy also incorporates this concept. It's better to just retreat until the enemy lowers their guard, providing a better opportunity to counterattack "It is not our place, he isn't some soldier we can just punish." He shifted to Ximen Pan with a stern look, lacking the same tone of understanding. "And you! As a member of the council of five, you should have known better. The rules of war are not to be ignored. Many military commander are not remembered fondly because of their crimes on the battlefield. I hope your words do not reflect your actions."
"With all due respect General Liu, not many people adhere to the rules of wars." Sangui challenged, not heeding Liu's advice. "On the field, anything can happen. For there is no such thing as justice in this world. The only rule that holds truth is the laws of the jungle. The strong can do whatever they please with the weak, even if those acts are immoral. Many military commanders in history are not strangers to their own savagery." He smirked, believing he cornered the Judge. "In fact, one of us here can still be considered as one of these commanders."
"Then I hope you would not become one them, admiral." General Liu warned, stroking his thick long beard furiously. "A wise man once said, history is not always kind to its subjects. If it's possible for even Avatars to be remembered unfavorably, mere commanders like us must not incite barbarity. Or else even the spirits will not sat idle."
Ximen Pan produced a laugh. He belittled general liu, citing how history are only written by those who have a monopoly over it. He also mocked the spirits and their near complacent existence. The spirits are not known to interfere with the affairs of humans. Wars and conflict meant nothing to them.
The Judge's breathing hastened. Even without showing his face, the snarling mask of the helmet is enough to imply his rage. But before he can use his left hand to choke the admiral, a young woman interrupted this moment.
"Sir, care for more tea?" Mayumi offered in a very soft tone. She is aware of the tension in the area, but decided to step in anyway. After the general gave permission, she poured some jasmine tea into his cup. The colored water seeped through the porcelain's crack, but the waitress didn't mind, and the Judge emptied it as refreshment.
"Hey uh servant girl, you got any maotai wine?" General Liu asked in an attempt to avoid talking to Ximen Pan.
"M-Maotai?" Mayumi appeared dumbfounded, unfamiliar with the name of the liquor. "I will check with Grandma Jin." She scurried off, asking Xiao Qing more about this wine.
...
The reception have been rather pleasant, save for that one little argument between two uncultured generals. Everything else went according to Xuan Zang's liking. The guests are enjoying the food before the inauguration for the graduates. Even though there is nothing vegetarian for him to enjoy, he even s glad others are well nourished. For it is widely known that members of the Air Nomads adhere to strict vegetarian diet that complys with their pacifist philosophy. All lives are precious, even if they are mere animals. While some might argue that animals are below humans, as they cannot understand the sophisticated way of thinking such as emotions and compassion. However, those who have witnessed humans at its lowest point would understand the ugly truth.
Humans are capable of vile and unforgivable acts, setting them below the wild beasts and critters that roam the wilderness. When you see humans carrying out such horrific transgression against themselves, one can tell not even the unintelligent animals can stood so low. Humans at their lowest point are below animals in the world of morality.
Shi Shen shuffled himself next to the airbender. He scanned the room repeatedly, trying to find someone amongst the crowd of invitees. "No sign of Te Laoye, shouldn't he be here by now?"
"You are nervous my old friend, I can sense your trembling." Xuan Zang laughed, much to his colleague's dismay. Professor Shi Shen is indeed uneasy about meeting the head of the Te clan. For the expectations of the Keju exam places extremely high hope in Te Gaogui, who is believed to be the most talented young scholar in the city. Everyone predict the first place would be easily hers. Yet, the title of Zhuangyuan was stolen by someone else. Surely Te Gaogui's father would not stand idle and endure such humiliation in silence.
Shi Shen sighed. "Wish I was ten tears younger, it seems that I get tired easily now days. First, that unkempt heir of the Ximen was smart enough to enter third place. Then, we have to worry about Te Laoye's fury about our decisions." He let out a breath, preparing himself for his biggest headache. "And don't even mention the Zhuangyuan himself, he used the philosophy of Fajia of all the governing philosophies? How dare he!?" He looked like he was about to pull his ponytail.
"But his essay was pretty good!" Xuan Zang answered in a carefree and childlike attitude, a behavior the temple monks often exhibit. Even though Xuan Zang was just a mere farmer in the Earth Kingdom. After receiving airbending and walked onto a path to enlightenment, his behavior and personality no long resembles that of an earth kingdom citizen.
Shi Shen rebuked this casualness. Even though he supported the airbender's choice of keeping the Zhauangyuan, there are still great concerns. "I'm fearful about what this young man would become in the future. He has no power family backing him, which is impressive that he achieved first place in the exam. But he also have no family looking after him. He only has himself. I'm afraid..."
Before Shi Shen can continue, the room of the atmosphere changed significantly. All the lively attitude died down when a loud trumpet ranged. It played a long tone, forcing the attention from everyone.
The announcer stopped playing when all eyes pointed at him. "May I present you, the heir of the Ximen household, the young and talented, young master Ximen Qing!"
All wary eyes closed in on the entrance, especially from worried men. A man in fine silk robe made of gold and green walked in. Accompanied by twelve other retainers, he wore an elaborate outfit that elevates him above even the other heirs of wealthy households. This is Ximen Qing. The young heir to Upper Ring's most influential household. Third place holder of the Keju. He is a highly detested figure in the city, obviously due to his more problematic habits.
Seducing women and dismantling loving relationships. Married couples who are together for years with romance that can seemingly last for an eternity, people like those are considered a challenge to him. The young heir is both disdained and feared. While they hated him for seducing women of married households, the Ximen family are not some regular earth Kingdom clan they can just punish. The household have been serving the Earth Kingdom dated all the way back to the early dynasties. The Ximen have produced generations of capable generals, some even went on to win historic battles and securing the Earth King's position of power. With so many accomplishments done by their ancestors, it also affects the current generation. Descendants of the early Ximen family are exempted from taxation, even certain crimes are forgiven. But such privileges also bred a sense of superiority, making them essentially untouchable. Being the most prestigious household, it also festers to their arrogance and fleeting humility displayed by their hardworking forefathers. With the current head of the household being a member of the Council of Five, Ximen Qing can get away with his adulterous activities, much to the disgust others as well as many who promoted Rujia.
A woman with very small shoes accompanied him, wraping her arms around Ximen Qing almost obsessively. She is just a daughter of another Earth Kingdom clan, believing she is the lucky one who will become Ximen's first wife. There are many incentives here. Some did it to inherit the wealth and power of the Ximen family, others did it simply because they became smitten with Ximen Qing's seduction and flowery compliments.
"That girl, sigh." Shi Shen wish he can close his eyes to forget about the embarrassment.
"Who is that?" The water tribesman asked. As a foreigner, there are still many things unknown to him.
"She is Jin Lian, my old student," Shi Shen muttered underneath his tired breath. "She was like a daughter to me. Her husband died not too long ago, and now she is-" He coughed up a mouthful. Xuan Zang rushed over to make sure that there isn't any blood on Shi Shen's mouth. "That foolish girl is playing with fire, if I don't discipline her, I would have failed as a teacher!" He was stopped by his two colleagues.
"In front of everyone here?" The curator of elephant koi asked. "That former student of yours would only resent you more. You Earth Kingdom folks will tear her apart if you do that. She is still your student, so please reconsider."
"But Aukaneck," Shi Shen said to the water tribesmen. "Jin Lian disrespected her late husband. She disrespected me, her mentor. She also tread on Rujia's values on chastity. But the greatest mistake is for her believe she is loved by that Ximen Qing. No! She is being used! An accessory!"
"Yeah, we already know that," Aukaneck calmly replied, as if that wasn't obvious enough. Even an outsider like Aukaneck know that Ximen Qing discards women like used fish bones after the meat have been eaten. Yet despite all of this, there are still people who choose to betray their spouses just to be favored by the Ximen heir. "You know, it's still weird how him of all people even passed the exam. Too bad I guess."
"T-Too bad? Too bad!?" Shi Shen's eyes goggled, almost yelled. "This is a transgression!" Still no matter how angry Shi Shen is, there is no evidence that can be used against Ximen Qing. The crime for cheating during the exam is worst than death. Anyone caught would be subjected to horrendous punishment. But since his eight legged essay have stood out amongst countless other parchment, what choice do these professors even have? The whole point of the Keju is to select talents regardless of where they come from.
Ximen Qing walked through the hall, with people backing away. Men would try to shield their significant other from him, only to be met with his hungry gaze, lusting after another target. It's absolutely pathetic that humans on the highest point in society is behaving like this, afraid that their wives or betrothed would be stolen by another man in broad daylight. If they could punish his arrogant heir, they absolutely would. But his identity and powerful familial backing made it impossible.
General Sangui widened his arms and embraced Ximen Qing's achievement in the exam. The admiral ignored the woman nearby named Jin Lian, as if she isn't even here. As they do so, Mayumi noticed and decided to walk towards there. She was halted when Xiao Qing used her hand to stop her path.
"Don't. Even. Think. About it." Xiao Qing warned, indicating the Kyoshi warrior to stay away from Ximen Qing. Mayumi inquired her about the behavior. After a brief explanation, she heeded her co-worker's advice.
"Thank you so much Xiao Qing, I could not have known without you," Mayumi said as they both walked towards a serving table. They resupplied some duck wraps and wine, preparing to serve more guests with Jin's dishes.
Xiao Qing huffed, almost looking down at Mayumi's inexperience with the city. While Mayumi is older and Xiao Qing aged similar to Satchiko, the latter clearly knows much more about Ba Sing Se and the ugliness that lies beneath the surface.
"Trust me, the Ximen heir will only use you." Xiao Qing warned. "These folks of the Upper Ring are all the same, disgusting beings who never cared about the rest of us."
Mayumi wanted to object, but refrained from doing so. She also urged Xiao Qing to not be too loud in case others ear drop on their conversation, but the younger one couldn't care less. "Well, at least Te Gaogui isn't like that. Unlike Ximen Qing, she works hard and behaves differently."
"Yeah right, maybe she is an exception." Xiao Qing retorted, but then she scathed. "It doesn't very matter. One good person doesn't change it all. Just look my them."
Xiao Qing pointed at their fellow waitresses. Mayumi noticed how many of them acted very flirtatious around some wealthy young men. They never displayed such caring and courteous behaviors at the soldiers who visited Grandma Jin's eatery. But why are they so coquettish here? Was Xiao Qing's unfavorable view of her fellow workers based on personal experience?
"T-That...I'm sure they are just getting carried away." Mayumi said. Although deep down even she felt her fellow waitresses might be stepping out of bound on today's occasion, trying to captivate the attention of their 'prince charming' in their fashionable dress. Their duty is to distribute Jin's roast ducks, not to socialize with the guests. Such behaviors are only tolerated by Jin after the Keju inauguration itself. "They might just be people you worked alongside with, but they are your fellow sisters as well." She tried to appeal to Xiao Qing's sense of comradery, hoping it can help drop some harsh views. While the one dozens of waitresses at Jin's restaurant are not some elite order founded by an Avatar, Mayumi knew the term 'sister' still applies despite the absence of blood tie.
Xiao Qing glared with an offended look, sharp eyes gazing closely. As if the that the word itself is a mockery. "Don't use the word sister on me. I am no one's, and I have none as well."
"Is everything ok? Wait, where are you going?" Mayumi extended her hand in concern. But Xiao Qing didn't answer, walking away to the opposite direction and leaving Mayumi alone. The chef nearby also noticed, but didn't say anything as he is busying cutting out pieces of turtleducks and made them into wraps.
Unsure what to do, Mayumi only continued with some food catering, staying out of sight from Ximen Qing's privy eyes
She simply returned to work, and occasionally glance at her sister's whereabouts. Satchiko is with Hudie, talking with the Judge of Honghai himself. Part of her is glad that the general is around to protect them. If Ximen Qing's deviancy is as horrifying as described, then it's better to have the war hero around to instill order.
So far, the event continued, with no signs of Lady Te Gaogui. After going around the giant hall for a few times, she encountered two very familiar people. They don't know who she is, and she have no intentions to inform them.
Noticing that one of them have no fingers, she tried to put a duck wrap direct it into the person's mouth.
"Hold it," Jang stepped in and stopped Mayumi, snatching her hand firmly. "What are you planning?" he interrogated the waitress, much to Sedna's disapproval. Mayumi was intending to shove a duck wrap inside Sedna's mouth. But in hindsight, that would have draw unwanted attention from judging eyes. It would be perceived as actions performed by the uncultured.
"Jang," Sedna said. "This young girl is just trying to help me. Stop being so serious. You need to stop being on guard all the time. Look around you, there is no one carrying a weapon around but you. Please, try to relax. Look at the general, he isn't bringing his weapon."
The Fire bender reluctantly let go. But in his other hand still held his trident spear. The lieutenant might be an ace to the Judge of Honghai's corp, but interacting with others in a peaceful environment is another skill the young commander need to cultivate. In fact, bringing his weapon to an auspicious gathering itself has many problems. Strange how the guards in the Royal Palace didn't even disarm him before allowing him through. Probably because his menacing look is enough to bypass the security.
Mayumi felt something is touching her kimono. Looking down, there is Jang's war hound not appearing hostile at all. It placed two of its front paws on Mayumi's left leg, trying to reach for the plate of food.
"Here, you go." Mayumi chuckled lightly and dropped a piece of duck on the ground when no one is looking. Jang and Sedna are engrossed in their own conversation, but she is certain that they won't mind someone else feeding their pet.
A dangerous grey hound with wolflike fangs strong enough to bite through metal armor. Oh yes, very adorable.
The hound made a snarl, devouring the food and viciously licked the ground clean. It eyed Mayumi with a friendly look, and she in turn patted its head. Afterwards, the girl decided to leave as Sedna begins to lecture the Fire bender about trivial subjects such as how he should smile a bit more to alleviate alienation. It's intriguing how Jang, despite being a powerful warrior that serves the other monstrosity in the room, acts rather quiet in front of the Water Tribe woman. While still maintaining his serious demeanor, he met Sedna with neither anger or reproach, just complete silence and nods in face of someone much weaker than him.
The warrior sighed, Jang ignored the gleeful expressions of others. No soldier would want to be embarrassed like this, being viewed as inferior to a mere civilian.
"I understand," he answered, accepting Sedna's criticisms of his behavior. It is common for those who dwell in different regions of Ba Sing Se to exhibit varying levels of societal behaviors. Thus, whenever they travel to another district within the city, it is very difficult to blend in with the locals.
The Upper Ring are populated by affluent citizens who worrying themselves with prestige and power, exerting their influence wherever they go. Oftentimes they are mocked for how soft and gentle they behave, with hands unable to endure any labor. The Middle Ring is a mix between the Upper and the Lower district. Home to scholars and well off citizens of commerce who are more educated. The Lower Ring couldn't care less about societal rules. The idea of long beautiful nails simply do not exist, as only hinders work. The agrarian zone perhaps have the roughest personality of it all. The village farmers talks loud and lively, oftentimes annoying those living in the urban areas. But they are also honest, never do they hold hidden intentions or the flowery compliments practiced rigorously by the wealthy households. The Outer Wall that guards the city itself can also be considered another district where population behavior differs from the rest. Soldiers who guarded the grand bastion would also live inside it, dwelling inside houses built literally against the walls itself. While everyone else faces daily problems at work and leisure, the warriors manning the outer wall must contend with anyone who tries to break in. People live through war and violence will never be the same. To truly comprehend the horrors that lies both on the battlefield and inside the hearts of humans will transform a naive individual into a distorted image of themselves, craving an end to whatever suffering their heart have.
Mayumi have heard about this illness. The illness of the heart as described by the senior Kyoshi warriors. There is no definitive form or behavior that is strictly followed. Screaming, fear, anger, sadness, depression and even the desire to take one's own life. Such traits are only part of hundreds of various manifestations of this illness. Jang doesn't appear to fit into any category she can think of. In fact, he might not even be affected at all. But as for the person this Fire bender serves, she isn't too certain. The Judge of Honghai hid his face behind a mask of iron. What is behind it? She truly is curious.
...
She entered the hall like an enchanting spirit who have graced their insignificant existence. Elegant and graceful, blessing them with her presence alone. The flower of Ba Sing Se, the one who outshines all in the serene garden have decided to make an entrance. There were no announcers or retainers accompanying by her side. Perhaps she preferred it that way, discarding any unneeded accessory besides her own dress. While such humility might be seen as virtuous, it actually played right into her hand, setting herself apart from the other women who tried everything to exert their own vanity.
In the eyes of many, she is so close yet unreachable. Embodying both worldly beauty and intellect, a rare piece of flower that bloomed without equal.
There is also an invisible aura, a pressure that anyone less worthy shouldn't approach the woman that just entered. With hundreds of eyes trained onto Lady Te Gaogui, Mayumi cannot help but feel ashamed at the thought of going near the noble lady. An ugly duckling's presence will taint the beauty of an eel swan.
It was supposed to be so simple. Mayumi wanted to just ask Te Gaogui about the possibility of helping Satchiko. But the situation have complicated a bit. One look at her own damaged kimono says it all. If she wanted to let Te Gaogui know she even exist, then she must initiate conversation. But in front of countless other people of the Upper Ring?
She looked around. People are complimenting and praising Te Gaogui's appearance. If she went near Te Gaogui in this almost ragged kimono, then she will not only humiliate herself, but also the person she is trying to seek help from.
From a distance, she can see Satchiko shaking her head. On the opposite side of the room, even her own little sister is pleading not step into the spotlight. Competing with Te Gaogui on the stage will only crush her. But what choice does she have? A small deterrence does not justify inaction.
With the thought of her sister's future in mind, Mayumi gripped her fingers on the tray of food and drinks. It was difficult taking her first step. She cautiously checked her surrounding before continuing when feeling more secure. More eyes are concentrated on her as she is closing in on lady Te. The middle carpet of the hall lies bare empty with Te Gaogui alone walking on it. But the appearance of a poorly dressed waitress will definitely interrupt the moment.
"Lady Te, would you like to have some food?" Mayumi lowered her head in respect, presenting the tray to person in front of her.
"Thank you, I appreciate yo-"
Te Gaogui's eyes widened a little, barely noticeable. But she immediately recomposed herself. Years of training in high societal behaviors allowed her to suppress the shock, therefore not arousing any unneeded attention from others. Which is why the unexpected appearance of the Kyoshi warrior didn't warrant any drastic reaction.
"I will have one please," Te Gaogui calmly requested. She reached for a piece of turtleduck meat wrapped in thin pancake. Dipping it lightly in the bowl of sauce, she then took a tiny bite without opening her mouth too wide. Mayumi used this moment to observe Te Gaogui's hands. Each have two silver nail guards equipped on the ring and pinky fingers. While this doesn't very confirm Mayumi's doubt, it does raise greater concern that Lady Te is not a bender.
A young Upper Ring gentleman entered their proximity, introducing himself to Lady Te. He congratulated her on getting the title of Zhuangyuan, first place holder of the Keju exam. While such feasible action might just another innocent attempt to get closer to Te's heart, there is only one problem with his statement.
"I humbly accept your praise, however." Te Gaogui for a slight moment revealed a look that intimidates the young man, unimpressed with his laughable conduct. "Answer me one question oh noble one, what is the title granted to the second place holder of Keju?"
Mayumi watched as he is at loss of words. She have a vague idea of how the Keju exam operates. It's a civil service examination aimed to attract the most talented individuals. Those who passed it can receive plenty of benefits, but the key reward is the certificate to work as a government official. The higher one scores, the higher rank you are given if you decide to work as a bureaucrat.
Zhuangyuan is the highest title one can attain, an astronomical educational achievement that demonstrates the mastery of social science and philosophy. All the other titles are lesser known, but any educated person would at least heard about it.
The man is fumbling in his words. The confidence that was bolstered him has whittled away. He couldn't answer the very basic question from Lady Te, an indication of his dull-wittedness.
"Lady Te, I uhm, please..." He struggled to formulate a response, but quickly skipped over in an attempt to recover from this downfall. "I would love to ask you out for a dance after your inauguration."
In her heart, Mayumi is thankful that the presence of another individual diverts attention away from herself. This nameless young man's own blunder provided a sense of relief. But if she is view it from a more serious lens, this young man is actually attempting to win the heart of Te Gaogui, and then eventually leading up to them both courting each other.
It's a feeling that is all too familiar to the Kyoshi warrior. Marriage was supposed to be a union between two. But many also saw it as a means to another selfish end. She remembered how much effort was made to reject the suitors, many she never even met before, without fostering lasting resentments. Since she have no intentions to marry complete strangers, the boy and his parents must be either talked out of it by Hakaru...or maybe threatened by a furious Kyoshi warrior matron and two sharp war fans. Both methods and the ones improvised by herself are daunting tasks. How will Te Gaogui, a noble lady from Eastern Earth Kingdom handle this insignificant moment?
Te Gaogui's eyes narrowed. Even without speaking, her expression already revealed her decision. "A kind offer, but perhaps you should reserve yourself to another lady who may be interested," she declined.
Surprising, the response wasn't filled with elaborate words to describe disdain. It was suspiciously simple, and Mayumi cannot help but feel Te Gaogui is restraining herself. This person asked for her dance does appear to have a wealthy lineage, but even then his league is far below the woman many desires.
Te Gaogui used her left hand and waved the man off. Realizing his chances all went down the drain, he march back to his two parents, who are just as embarrassed themselves. It's rather impressive how Lady Te is able to ward off people like them through a single line of words alone. Beauty and status attracts certain locusts who only desire the benefits or courting a person. The parents are no better. They too often share the same responsibility for encouraging their sons to attempt such behaviors.
Mayumi thought she could enjoy this moment by savoring the humiliated looks of that man and his parents. But it soon passed when she noticed Te Gaogui is scanning the unkempt kimono. She looked at her, not openly displaying pity. But there is another question that needed answering. Te Gaogui is someone who has worldy beauty and intellect, most people expected her to be the first place holder.
"Y-You didn't get the title of Zhuangyuan?" Those words escaped out of her mouth before she can stop it.
It was answered by Te Gaogui closing her eyes and slowly nodding once. "It is with great sadness that I must admit, I am not good enough." She answered in a mildly sorrowful tone. The significant amount of frustration is obvious despite all the concealment. It's the feeling how someone have interfered and robbed you of a guaranteed success. She raised her hand and formed a walnut sized distance between two of her fingers. "I was this close to getting what I wanted, but someone else swindled it away. Do you know who?"
Now it was Mayumi's turn to feel pressured. She only shook her head lightly, not wishing to lie about how much she know.
Hearing a voice from behind, Mayumi turned and to saw Xuan Zang announcing the beginning of the main event. All the guests gradually diminished their socialization, turning their attention to the empty throne.
"Welcome to the Keju graduation ceremony!" Xuan Zang's voice ranged throughout the hall. "It's such a blessing to meet you all. I suppose we can begin?"
End of chapter Notes:
-Eel swans are the equivalent of swans in the canon Avatar show(Mentioned in Tlok). They are never actually in media so far, but they are presumably considered similar to the real life swans in terms of status.
-The Kang Shen is canon.
-The hat worn by Han Fei is the guanmao headwear from Qing dynasty. There are two variants. One for winter and another for summer. Now despite Ba Sing Se's weather, I prefer Han Fei's design to be paired up with the winter variant.
-The Gan Jin tribe is another canon ethnic group aside from the Zhang.
-The famous Earth Kingdom poet Li Hei is literally just a parody of the real life counterpart Li Bai. Just like how the Kheshigs is a shameless copy of the mongolians.
-Maotai wine is very just a style Baijiu wine.
-Jang's hairstyle is based on the Korean Sangtu. Worn by Joseon dynasty nobleman and scholars, the dark headband manggeon is used to hold the hair in place. More on Jang's 'trident spear'. It is not very a trident but more of a type of pole arm, it's like a lance with two additional edges, most commonly depicted as the weapon of choice of a mythological character Erlang Shen.
-The name Aukaneck is based Inuit god that control waves.
-The sword used by the admiral is a callback to the same weapon taken by the canon Tagaka. Courtesy to the Novel Rise of Kyoshi.
Post chapter skit: Dark energy
Hakaru breathed deeply, he inhaled as much air he could while standing inside a room. Every furniture in the space is completely normal. A normal looking char, sofa, table and bed etc. But the village patriarch does not appear at peace. In fact, his face is painted with a serious expression, almost sternly. Rarely have the peaceful tea loving man been so critical of something.
"I sense a killing intent in his house." He stated darkly, crossing his arms.
"Dad, what's wrong?" Satchiko asked, still wearing her full warrior outfit. "Is there an intruder hiding here? A thief?" She pulled out her two war fans, preparing to fight(This is a skit, so don't worry about story continuity.)
"No Satchiko, it's even worst." Hakaru narrowed his eyes, glaring at all the furnitures in the room. "What I sense is the embodiment of evilness. Bad Feng Shui!"
"Oh no..." Satchiko groaned. "Not again."
"Indeed, I can sense many evil energy reeking in this room." Hakaru commented. Clearly he is unaware that Satchiko was talking about his unhealthy obsession with the philosophical furniture placement.
"That table, bad Feng Shui." He walked towards a table and started to move it to the side wall, no longer on the same alignment as the doorway. "There, the flow of energy is now no longer obscured." Next, he went over to a small closet, where a pile of books labeled 'cultural study material' is positioned.
"Wait, these are just cook books." Satchiko remarked.
"Bad Feng Shui as well," Hakaru tried to pick up the books, but he quickly retracted his hands after he making contact. It's like he has been hurt.
"Dad, you ok?" Satchiko asked in concern.
"I am fine," Hakaru said calmly. "I sense a lot of dark energy in these cook books, quick, we must depose them." He used a piece of cloth to remove the stack of books, carefully not touching them.
Satchiko watched as her father continues to 'renovate' the house. She cannot help but felt this whole Feng Shui is becoming out of hand. Hakaru is rearranging the furnitures into weird spots of the room that makes no sense to her. This whole concept about good and bad spirit energy had her dumbfounded. It's like the whole concept of good and evil spirits are just poorly written stories by idiots.
"Mum, I think Dad is becoming a little...weird." Satchiko said. Akahana only sipped a cup of sweet matcha, calmly watching her husband doing some furniture rearrangement.
"You are worrying too much daughter, your father is just too rooted in tradition." Akahana peacefully enjoyed the tea, while pointing at another figure that just joined. "Besides, it's not like he is the only one in our family who is like this."
Mayumi barged in with a bag filled with roasted soybeans. She threw out a handful, scattering them around the floor. "Evil spirits out, fortune in!" the older sister yelled.
One of the beans just to happens to pelt Satchiko's forehead. She picked it up and put it in her mouth. "Not bad, just a little bit toasted." She turned back to her mother. "Anyway, don't you think we should stop them before things went too far."
"Too far?" Akahana chuckled. "How can things go too far when-"
There is someone else in the room. It is standing at the very back, staring down at them. Satchiko immediately pulled out her war fan jumped in front of this new dark entity. Mayumi joined her with her katana.
"Who are you?" Mayumi demanded.
The dark looking creature with glowing eyes laughed. "Ha Ha Ha, I am the darkest of all dark, the evilest of all evil. Everything I do is motivated by evil reasons only. I am...THE DARK SPIRIT!"
"Oh wow, it's like the writer didn't even try this time," Satchiko remarked.
Hakaru handed her a talisman with a yin and yang symbol surrounded by trigrams. He quickly explained how putting it on the evil creature's forehead can subdue the evil energy.
As the two of them are locked in combat with the evil entity, Akahana decided to walk out of the room. She came back with some, something very heavy.
"It's no use, I can't put the talisman on the forehead!" Satchiko cried. Mayumi tried her best to slash the dark spirit, but the sword just went through it, not harming the enemy at all. Hakaru even tried to use a fire lamp, trying to shine some light onto the dark creature. It did not work. Apparently the dark spirit are not affected by it. It seems that the whole Darkness thing is more of a metaphor than a literal energy in this story's world building.
"Step aside!" Akahana grunted, she hurled a giant sack fill of roasted soybeans at the enemy. Her family recoiled away as the heavy object smashed the dark spirt in the stomach, trapping it against a wall.
"Quick, the talisman!" Hakaru cried. Satchiko used this opportunity to press the talisman on the dark spirit's forehead. Eventually, the dark evil creature slowly evaporated into thin air. She faced her father, asking what is the exact mechanism behind the talisman. But Hakaru simply shrugged, stating that the details are not too important even though it makes zero sense.
"Anyway, we still have much to do!" The chief declared. Mayumi also came back with some more roasted soybeans and scattered them across the floor.
Satchiko only watched nervously, afraid that their shenanigans will cause further damage to the house. But then, she made a realization. "Hold it, whose house even is this?"
"Not ours," Akahana replied as she continued to drink the cup of matcha. "Don't worry, I am sure the owner would not mind."
"Oh, well it certainly is reassuring that the house owner gave permission." Satchiko replied.
...
"So you like it?" Hakaru asked.
The knight in rusty armor and a dented helmet looked at the destroyed house. Nearby is a landfill of roasted soybeans, where Mayumi is directly people to move to where the house is.
The knight nodded very slowly, 'approving' this renovation. Because if he doesn't, the two golden war fans pointing his back would have a different response.
