A few individuals marched from the crowd, they are the ones who have passed the rigorous examination and earned the title of Jinshi. Walking near the base of the throne dais, feeling privileged for being so close to it.
Perhaps there is symbolism at play. Being in close proximity to the seat of the Earth Monarch may show that it is possible for anyone to play a great role in the bureaucracy. It can be earned by commoners and members of influential households alike, supposedly preaching how merit exceeds birthright.
Xuan Zang unrolled a parchment, beginning to read out all the names. Stating the names is also part of the tradition, it aims to solidify the identity of the young talents to those present. Military generals, aristocrats, government officials, family members and even aspiring students who might consider partake in the exam in the future. In the presence of many significant members of this city, the inauguration holds more weight. In the past, the Earth Monarch would also be present to witness the event. Afterwards, all names would be archived, placing them among the other past graduates from former dynasties.
Mayumi and the rest of the caterers halted all operations. She joined her sister's side after retrieving the intricate paper fan umbrella underneath the table. As for the disgruntled Xiao Qing, she left for home early after receiving Jin's permission. Their work is over, with the guests well nourished, they may choose what to do now. The rest of the restaurant crew simply stayed behind to witness the students being inaugurated.
Pushing her way through the crowd, other guests did cast some curious glances. Presumably because of Mayumi's poorly done dress, which already attracted attention earlier in the party.
"Sister," Mayumi said as she arrived beside Satchiko. She opened up the umbrella with a flop sound, revealing the beautiful painting of mountain and ocean. Hopefully this can help her blend in with the others, hiding the hideous dress she is wearing, They all remained silent as Xuan Zang begins his speech.
"The Keju examination is a very difficult process as you would have already know," Xuan Zang began by praising all graduates who are standing before the gathered people. "Many of you don't even have the best upbringing, yet you still persevered." The monk proudly glanced at a young man in a farming garb, who is standing side by side with some of the most talented scholars of Upper and Middle Ring. Such worthy examples are often promoted, hoping others would emulate.
The sound of applause by the attendees played for a long time. The Judge of Honghai stood with Jang and Sedna, holding a plate full of turtle duck wraps for himself. He ate them without worry, garnering judging gazed by others. But to a man who have slayed Anguta the pirate lord and danced with death like breathing the air, opulent validation meant absolutely nothing.
"Want some?" the general offered to Satchiko using his deep toned voice. It still sounded inhuman, yet casual at the same time. He used his copper knife to skew a wrap, holding it near the short petite girl.
Satchiko declined. She wanted to focus more on the upcoming segment. Many touted it as the most important part of the Keju ceremony; the inception of the top three graduates.
"As you have known, every ceremony we would select top three graduates who have performed exceptionally well with their essays. And with these talents, we have prepared special gifts." Xuan Zang said.
Professor Shi Shen then pushed a wheeled rack to the front of the room, with three wooden carved boards displayed. These are title boards given to the top three winners, it serves as a certificate to their achievement. From bottom to top, it went from Tanhua, Bangyan and then Zhuangyuan. The monk called out the third place holder first. "Ximen Qing from the Ximen family, please come forth."
With his chin raised upward and robe shining bright, he marched towards Shi Shen to receive the title of Tanhua. The room fell silent to each step made. This man is the epitome of disgust. How many lives have he ruined for the sake of pleasure and entertainment? He probably secretly fathered some of the other family's children that are right underneath this very roof. Yet seeing him about to obtain such an esteemed only made their blood boil even more. Countless men wanted to tear him apart. But as the 'civilized', that option is not available here.
Shi Shen removed the board from the rack, resisting the urge to break it into two pieces. He hid his rage until he finally gave the certificate to the young heir. Despite having his veins thicken physically, he did not to lash out openly at the licentious young man.
"C-Congratulations...you have done well." Xuan Zang appeared uncomfortable. The Air Temple monks and their Air Acolytes are known to be model paragons. Which is why their rejection of attachments also helps them lead an abstinent lifestyle. As for the young heir of the Ximen family, it's no secret that the virtues and morality of Rujia are placed at the very low. It also doesn't help that his own father refused to reprimand such deviancy.
"I humbly accept this title," Ximen Qing youthfully said. For a small moment, he gave Shi Shen a smirk, asserting the fact how Jin Lian fell under his charms, and the father figure cannot do a single thing to stop it. If it wasn't for the presence of so many people, Shi Shen certainly would have taken action into his own hands. Ximen Qing then turned around to face the roughly five hundred guests. "As a member of our beautiful city, I will continue to serve the people's needs. I thank you all for your support. And I firmly believe that my endeavors of helping others will benefit everyone."
There was a huge glee in his smiles. He knew what he was talking about. The military generals, officials and professors knew what he was talking about. All the young men and their significant others are not clueless at what he is implying. It was a huge slap in the face to all those who have attended. Even the forgiving and peace loving Master Xuan Zang cannot help but grimace at this shameless ploy. Sheer vulgarity hidden in his words, yet Ximen Qing is bold enough to showcase his so called proud achievements. In this very hall, there are probably plenty of women who have betrayed their spouse just because of his devious seduction. Then again, he is still the son of an admiral, and a descendent to some of the most praiseworthy generals of the nation. There is absolutely nothing they can do aside from tolerating his disgusting admonishing behavior.
The Ximen family have too much power. Unless Ximen Qing did something treasonous, only then can he be prosecuted. As much as people loathed his debauched lifestyle and corrupting the hearts of married women, sadly ruining relationships are technically not serious enough to be a crime. If the case is related to one of the Earth King's countless concubines, only then will the perpetrators be punished severely. The highest punishments are still delivered to subversive individuals who undermined the state. Unfortunately, Ximen Qing fits right into the dissipated lifestyle of the Upper Ring. He is simply not hiding it as much as some others.
"Now, for our Bangyan." Xuan Zang induced some hope back into the audience. "Please come forth, Lady Te Gaogui of the Te clan."
The noble lady slowly trotted towards Shi Shen, carefully balanced her beautiful headdress. Ignoring the concupiscence look from the deranged Ximen Qing, she reached where Shi Shen is standing. At first she bowed at the other professors and then to astrologist Shi Shen, before finally offering her hands out to receive the title board reward. This time, Shi Shen didn't display any contempt. He contently handed the certificate board, and nothing much happened.
Before Xuan Zang can utter any words of congratulations, the noble lady spoke first.
"I appreciate the hope and anticipation placed by all of you, but I want to say that I am sorry for not meeting your expectations, for failing the hope you have placed in me." Te Gaogui surprised the audience by bowing. They are understandably heavyhearted about her not obtaining the title of Zhuangyuan. She may oftentimes showcase a cold attitude to those who have disrespected her. But many who who have lived in the city long enough would know that she is an education prodigy paired with compassion. Being a woman possessing both unmatched beauty and intelligence, many believe she would be the one to secure first place. Sadly, the flower that out blooms all its competitors have been overshadowed.
"You know, it certainly is a surprise." The Judge remarked as he ate another piece of Ba Sing Se duck. "To think that she would be outdone by that scholar, very disappointing. I know he is impressive, but I didn't thought he would outrank Lady Te in the Keju exam."
"Indeed general," Jang answered in his over serious expression. "This outcome is unexpected to us all, even within your calculations."
"Poor thing," Sedna remarked about Lady Te.
Satchiko didn't ask anything. She haven't been in Ba Sing Se for long, and there is immense difficulty in following their conversation. According to what is being discussed, Te Gaogui is a prodigy in education such as political science, and they expected her to get first place on this exam. While she personally believe second place is not a bad reward, the notion that expectations can heavily influence a person's life is evident. Part of her own drive to master combat skills is also motivated by her identity as Akahana's daughter. Although the villagers back home will naturally be friendly to her, she always felt this unspoken pressure to outperform her fellow sisters just to justify her birth. Being a daughter to the best Kyoshi warrior alive is to also learn how to survive in her mother's shadow. If both she and Mayumi didn't meet everyone's expectations as highly skilled combatants, then obviously their position would feel unearned despite having no control over it. Even for an untrained eye, the Kyoshi warrior can notice a faint sign of wavering on Te Gaogui's face.
"Unacceptable!" a firm and authoritative voice suddenly decried. Some people gasped as a slim middle aged man interrupted the proceedings.
"Sir, please moderate yourself!" requested a guard in brigandine. But it was no use. Instead of discrediting such act, all the other guests formed up a passage for him, allowing this newcomer to slowly tread towards the front.
Satchiko and Mayumi watched closely as he came to the base of the dais. Xuan Zang hurried over and bowed low, showing respect to this figure. "Lord Te welcome to the city of Ba Sing Se! I am sure your journey have been an audacious one. It is such an honor to meet y-"
"Save it!" commanded the man. "You all have have some explaining to do!" Based on the appearance of his green robe, he is obviously someone hailing from another influential noble household. But without the iconic Ba Sing Se queue hairstyle for men, his choice of a topknot signifies that he is from outside the city. The man berated the presenting professors with such ferocity that even Shi Shen himself decided to hid behind the throne.
Satchiko heard the lieutenant chuckled very faintly. From the side of lips are tiny curves forming a barely noticeable smirk. It's rare how the no-nonsense man can experience humor in such a scenario.
"The noble is displaying their true nature, it must be shattering that he realize the world owes them nothing." The Fire bender did receive some glares from the other guests. But the Vermilion Bird also pay no heed. He carefully savored the taste of wine, much to Sedna's disapproval. The latter then subjects him to a small lecture about drunkenness, to which the Fire Bender lowered his head and endured.
"Master Te, please!" Xuan Zang addressed courteously once again. "We fully understand your frustration. I promise you, we have judged all essays regardless of their background. By no means are we suggesting that Lady Te have not performed exceptionally well on the Keju. But rules we abide by is still the same. No matter where they came from, we must select the Zhuangyuan based on their intellect rather background. Which is why we concluded that...that your daughter did not reach first place." He lowered his head even more, hoping to quell the patriarch's anger. Sweat can be seen perfusing from his forehead. With a bald head, things are more obvious.
With a heavy heart, Te Laoye took one step closer to Xuan Zang. "Are you insinuating that a mere commoner bested my daughter?" his eyes narrowed with a sharp gaze piercing into the university director's nerves. In this man carries the will of a thousand typhoons ready to be unleash upon all the professors gathered. Not even some of the guards nearby dare to intervene. Some of the guests may have to depend on the generals to keep things in order. But the head of the council of five, General Liu, may be a little intoxicated to perform his duty.
Before Te Laoye can lash out, his daughter stopped him by gently grabbing his arm. She slowly walked towards him, and then whispered some words inaudible to others. Whatever she conveyed, it did transformed Laoye's expression from anger to a state of consternation.
"Y-You..." the older man is at a loss of words. He swiftly turned back to Xuan Zang, with a slightly calmer demeanor. But it is still consumed with stern disdain to the Air Bender. "This isn't over Xuan Zang. Studying is like climbing a mountain, but few can ever reach the very top and enjoy the view below. My daughter was supposed to be the one to receive the highest honor, but you denied her this chance! While she has conceded defeat, I haven't! Not until I examine the Zhungyuan's essay to make sure that he truly deserves his place!"
"B-But!" Xuan Zang wanted to protest. Him and other professors are distraught at the mere suggestion. "We cannot allow that."
"Why not!?" Laoye roared.
Satchiko whispered to her sister, commenting on what is happening. Te Gaogui clearly does not want to dispute the results any further. But even so, Te Laoye isn't someone who is willing to back down. A staunch parent steps up for their children, even if the demands can be rather unreasonable.
"According to the ancient laws of Ba Sing Se, any essays written during the Keju are not to be disclosed. Only the permission of the Earth King can grant you access!" But Xuan Zang's plea fell on deaf ears. It did not appease the nobleman. Instead, they are embroiled into a an even more fierce debate, with Xuan Zang doing his best Air Nomad way of peace to calm the disgruntle father. Te Laoye is not afraid to risk reputation to redeem his daughter's honor. It seems that the Te clan are prominent enough to openly challenge certain authorities in the city,
On the side, Satchiko watched the scene unfold. But soon, she began to notice more people, especially young maidens, quietly staring her. No, their eyes were not directed at herself, but glued at the person next standing next to her, Mayumi.
At first, she discerned this behavior as just the upper classed ladies looking down at her beloved sister's dress, but something else made her change this view. The Judge of Honghai and his two associates, who are standing right next to the pair also did the same. Since they are so close in proximity, she realized that they were staring at what her sister is holding, the umbrella.
Mayumi haven't noticed this, her concentration is beamed at the quarrel between Te Laoye and Xuan Zang. But Satchiko quickly tugged her sleeves, pulling her to the side of the hall where conversation can be held privately.
"What's wrong?" Mayumi asked as they hid behind a thick pillar. The umbrella felt a bit cumbersome as they both squeeze into the space.
"Big sis, I want you to tell me honestly, where did you get this umbrella? Who is that man that gave this to you?" Satchiko tried not to sound too interrogative. She doesn't know who has gifted this intricate parasol, but it definitely has attracted unwanted attention. The fear of her sister being in danger will sow discomfort in the heart. If even the likes of the Judge of Honghai is taking an interest in the umbrella, then surely there is more that meets the eye.
"I told you, it was just a random stranger I met on a stone bridge." Mayumi stated. But it failed to calm her younger sibling. The identity of the stranger is a young nameless gentleman who also partook in the examination, but probably didn't make it due to his current absence.
"People are staring at you, even that man encased in metal and the Fire Bender with three eyes." Satchiko said quickly. "Something has to be wrong with the umbrella." She quickly snatched it, checking the designs for any hidden compartment which may endanger the wielder. But there was nothing.
"Satchiko, the umbrella is fine," Mayumi insisted, sighing. She smoothed her hand across Satchiko's shoulder, trying to subdue the anxiety. But it didn't work. Satchiko only checked more rigorously for any abnormalities. She stopped momentarily to look at the image painted. Just a simple ink painting with a mountain with a river leading towards a vast ocean. While it is beautiful, there is nothing evident enough that points to any suspicious elements.
"You are being paranoid. The umbrella is probably just a work of a famous craftsman. If it's very something special, I doubt that person would have given it away freely." Mayumi regained ownership over the object much to Satchiko's protest. She gently pushed her sister back out of the pillar's concealment and return to the party.
But it was when they walked back into other people's presence did Mayumi came that believe in Satchiko. When a good portion of the room is staring at the umbrella, something unexplainable is behind this. But most of them of course are focused on her, the 'owner'.
"You were saying?" Satchiko finally convinced Mayumi.
Te Gaogui is slowly treading across the carpet until she is in front of the older sister. She stared intensely at the umbrella, not speaking a single word. Both Kyoshi warriors don't even know what to say at this point, for all the silent glances are accompanied by the background bickering. It seems that Xuan Zang and Te Laoye are still engrossed in their debate. The issue of written essay confidentiality is a controversial issue for them both.
"Well, where is he then?" the nobleman with a thick mustache demanded. He looked around at his daughter, then at all the crowds surrounding them. "Did my daughter got surpassed by a man who lacks even the basic of discipline? If not, why do I not see the Zhuangyuan present in this very hall?"
Members of the crowd turned and look. But nowhere can they found the one who have bested Te Gaogui and pried her of the first place holder.
Satchiko slowly shuffled to Mayumi, whispering into her ears. "I have a bad feeling big sis, let's get out of here before things get too out of hand, forget about the tutoring.
"What?" Mayumi almost exclaimed." No, not now." Te Gaogui is standing right in front of them, and they are literally so close to their goal. But both stopped arguing when they noticed Lady Te shifting her eye to the main entrance. They did the same, slowly turning their heads to what is focused by essentially everyone in the room.
"Oh look, there he is." The Judge casually dipped his wrap into the sauce, a little bit uninterested in the event unfolding. He seems to be paying more attention to the food rather than the presentation of the Zhuangyuan.
Te Laoye narrowed his eyes, brows thickened.
The young man wearing white changshan robe marched on the carpet in a comfortable pace. There is a sense of unique elegance, but also pride and confidence, something that not even Gaogui can mimic. Despite his ordinary appearance, the identity as this year's Keju top performer itself warrants upmost respect. To occupy the first placeholder spot is to enjoy the prodigious view of standing on mountain peak and looking down at all under heaven. After all, being a Zhuangyuan is akin to be an esteemed noble, a title earned not through birthright, but hard work and studying. Through merits, those who became Zhuangyuan demonstrated their educational prowess through a piece of written parchment alone.
"That's...isn't that?" Satchiko pointed at the newcomer. She has only seen this stranger once outside the building where the Keju was held. In no outcome did she anticipate that he would be the one to earn the top spot. Her sister on the other hand also have a similar reaction, but much more contained. Neither of them could have anticipate that the Zhuangyuan was the nameless stranger who gave Mayumi the umbrella. Perhaps the identity of this young scholar may explain why people are focused on a mere waitress.
With a controlled furious expression, Te Laoye flounced towards the young talent. Despite the nobleman's intimidating demeanor, the latter was apathetic. Like a proud crane, he faced the Te without anything wavering.
"You are very bold for a commoner," Laoye growled. "The Keju examination's top position only belongs to those worthy of talent."
The gentleman in wearing white didn't respond. He deliberately made Te Laoye wait as he himself unfolded up the iconic white paper fan. With his eyes closed, he fanned his face, not even bothered in the slightest.
"You insolent brat," Te Laoye almost lost it. The silence itself is an act of defiance. "Haven't your parents taught you how to behave?"
In the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation, it is extremely rare for those without noble lineage to behave as equals with those with more power. Any poor farming peasant would lose their heads should they dare display disrespect to nobles or powerful officials. To get away with consequences, commoners must have something that can preserve their cranium from being dislocated. Either you become valuable enough, or you earned yourself enough power to afford offending nobles. Military generals important to the nation may have many maneuverability. But being an intellectual powerhouse can also alleviate punishments, especially a Zhuangyuan, both legally and socially.
Xuan Zang and his contingent of teachers cautiously arrived next to Te Laoye, trying to mediate between the men. With the astrologist Shi Shen tactically hiding behind the Northern Water Tribe's Aukaneck.
The monk bowed to the father in a last ditch attempt to resolve the tension. "Master Te, allow me to introduce you to-"
"I don't need to know who this is," Laoye said bitterly. "It doesn't matter. My daughter should have been the one to claim the title. The only way for me to accept this result, is that I read his essay!"
In all of the Earth Kingdom's history. The essays produced on the exam were rarely allowed to be revised by outsiders. It is a breach of the a code of conduct. To examine a Zhuangyuan's essay without the Earth sovereign's approval is said to offend even the spirts themselves. It is disrespectful to the author, and whoever committed this act will receive divine punishment, supposedly. Despite the superstitions, such a heavy thoughts are ingrained in the minds of all nobles. But it seems that Te Laoye is willing to ignore all of it just for the sake of his daughter.
"Father...please, you have done enough," Gaogui pleaded gently, hoping it can end as soon as possible. Both the nearby girls wearing green kimono can sense the sorrowful look, but remained silent and observe. The Judge of Honghai meanwhile, chewed on another piece of meat. Everyone else can sense the thickening tension that is about to implode. The worst case scenario is that the whole event would be canceled following a major dispute.
The white scholar opened up his eyes again. Calmly, he spoke with dignity. "I will allow it."
Satchiko noticed the small detail of Te Laoye widening his eyes. Everyone in that circle ranging from professors to Te Gaogui herself were also surprised by this simple response.
Xuan Zang wanted to protest, but the Zhuangyuan insisted. "Not only will I allow Lord Te to examine my work to his heart content, I also request my eight legged essay to be display across all over Ba Sing Se."
This time, the stakes have been risen higher. Even the Judge of Honghai stopped to eat just to pay more attention.
"From the noble courts of the Upper Ring all the way to the peasantry in the agrarian zone, I want copies of my essay to be showcased. I dare anyone, regardless of their social standing, to improve upon my written piece."
Te Gaogui looked a bit taken back, her expression is more tamed when compared to the other guests.
"What is the meaning of this?" Laoye demanded.
"For your information, I intend to solidify my climb by challenging anyone talented enough to rewrite my essay. If they can make my work better, I will give them a handsome reward as well as my title." The adolescent scholar drew gasps from all around the room. Such a wager is a bold and daring one. How can he risk such a prestigious title and his entire future just for a petty dispute like this? Even if he completely ignored the nobleman, the title of Zhuangyuan is still legally his own.
Xuan Zang scrawled to the young man, stating how titles accumulated from the exam cannot be transferred to another person.
"Why not?" The scholar continued to cool himself with the paper fan, as if he is the one that is lecturing the senior monk. The young scholar did not respect Xuan Zang despite Rujia's cultural demand to honor those who are older than yourself. "Was the Keju not meant to elevate individuals for their merits? If there is someone in the city who is better, then yours truly will gladly give up all he have and live a life as a disgraced recluse."
"And who will be the judge of that?" Laoye challenged.
Every looked at the general with the lion turtle mask. He only reacted by stuffing some more duck wraps into his mouth, showing no concerns for appearances.
The nameless scholar only smiled coldly. "Since our esteemed general is only a sword, then I suppose someone else with a greater knowledge may oversaw this whole test. As for you." He eyed Laoye straight in the eye. "You can compare your daughter's essay with mine. My essay will be placed all around the city, go to one of them if you like."
Satchiko felt that the scholar accomplished something here. He denied Te Gaogui's father from reading the real essay paper, a move that aims to disrespect the noble's request. By asking the older man to read the essay copies on the streets, it's telling him that Te's father is not important enough to dictate the conversation.
Xuan Zang appeared uneasy. To the urging of his colleagues, they decided to shuffle along with the ceremony with the final inauguration of the Zhuangyuan.
The scholar walked pass the two members of the Te family. He looked back at them. "Your familial bonds are worthy of being commemorated. But your burden only blinded you from doing what must be done. If your daughter isn't so filial to her incompetent father, maybe she would be facing such humiliation."
Satchiko noticed Mayumi narrowing her eyes in disdain. For all these years, the concept of family is something her sister feels very passionate about. Whenever troublemakers in her village insults a family, her older sister would always be the first to forcefully correct such behavior. If what that scholar said to the Te family occurred on the streets outside, it would likely have ended in fierce confrontation.
Three attendants walked out from the side of the hall and stationed themselves near the dais. Xuan Zang than positioned himself at the throne's base, instructing the young scholar to receive the rewards. Satchiko had a faint understanding of these items. But her text books provided decent explanations.
The first one is a silk gown. The green clothing consists of a badgermole embroidery depicted in the abdominal area. It is likely to be an official wear given to every student who have passed the exam. But this one is much more exquisite, clearly to distinguish the Zhuangyuan's honor and glory from all the lesser competitors.
Next is a pair of dark boots. It is actually quite common to see members of the Upper Ring having one. But still it is an integral part of an government official's outfit.
Lastly, the most important reward for the Zhuangyuan is the hat, the symbol of his accomplishments. It is a dark colored wushamao with two wing-like flaps of thin, oval shaped boards on each side. It is not the hat itself that matters, it is the right to wear it. To wear one of these is to assert official power even greater than many of the noble houses in the Upper Ring. Regular citizens can only wear this particular style headwear during important events such as weddings.
The scholar donned the robe and hat over his own clothing. It fitted like a hand into a glove. Size was perfect, showing him being destined to become the Zhuangyuan. People can only dream to be in his position.
Soon, he stepped onto the middle stair that leads to the throne, stopping halfway and looking at the crowd of guests. Initially, Satchiko could not understand why he is doing this whereas others didn't. But since no one protested his act, she assume it is normal conduct during the ceremony.
Xuan Zang now opened up a parchment to read out the graduate's name. Satchiko and Mayumi both opened their eyes wide to who this mystery gentleman is and what family name he has. But before that can happen, the old master decided to spoke some words of congratulations for the sake of ceremonial etiquette.
"Through hardship, perseverance, cultivation and dedication to the nation's classical texts and literature, you have reached the top in the world of learning." Xuan Zang praised, reading off the scroll in his hand. "It is with great honor that we can witness another inauguration of a worthy scholar like you."
As the university director said those words, Te Gaogui lost the aura of confidence she once had. Her expression faltered, looking to the floors feeling dejected from this event.
"Big sis, you still think it's a good idea to talk with her after this?" Satchiko whispered, worried about Te Gaogui's wellbeing. She may not have been familiar to the noblewoman, but at the very least, concerning about other people's health is a virtue her father encourages. "She doesn't look too well, should we visit her when she feels better?"
"We will see," Mayumi answered. Clearly not even she felt certain enough if the Lady Te is still in a position to accept a student. Even more troublesome, the head of the Te clan is now in the city. Gaogui might need approval from the patriarch before any decision can be made.
After a while, Xuan Zang's long congratulatory speech came to a close. The whole time, the Zhuangyuan's eyes were shut, listening as the monk finally finished.
"And you alone have seized the head of the Lion Turtle," Xuan Zang said to the scholar. "I proclaim officially you a Zhuangyuan of Ba Sing Se. May you serve the city, the people and the nation with a wise and prudent heart. May your legend sour through the sky and echo the passage of time and history. May the spirits bless you in all your endeavors. Finally, may you be the pillar that uplifts your family, a proud son to your parents. You have exceeded yourself, Shan." Shi Shen then came over and gave the graduate the wooden tablet.
Satchiko waited, but there was no more to this young scholar's name. Usually, Earth Kingdom nobles would have an important family name that aims to display their lineage.
"Wait," Satchiko looked to the general after sensing a familiarity in the name. "If I am not mistaken, could this man be the same author who wrote one of your books in your possession."
The general nodded, and then devoured another duck wrap. But this new information did surprise the sisters.
"He must be very smart, just look at him." Satchiko said. What she is looking is the polar opposite of who she is. Shan is a renown scholar who have spent his time and energy reaching the very top of what studying has to offer. Being a Zhuangyuan meant one have obtained knowledge and intelligence far beyond normal human capability.
But Mayumi crossed her arms, staring at Shan with a disapproving look. "So intelligent, yet certain virtues are still lacking."
Shan slowly climbed down the stairs. With the conclusion of the main event itself, all the other guests loosened up and enjoyed the reminder of the party with leisure. Musicians performed as people began to dance, and Mayumi's fellow co-workers are searching for their prince charming with little success.
Mayumi eyed the scholar, Xuan Zang lead him out to the exit. For a brief moment, he did cast a single glance at their direction. It was only after he disappeared did Mayumi soften her tense body.
"You have quite the bold heart, young one," the Judge of Honghai said. After he send off Jang and Sedna, he decided to personally speak with the two. "How in the name of Lady Tienhai did you have something that belongs to that man?"
Mayumi looked at him with caution. "What are you saying?"
"The umbrella," the Judge clarified. "How did you obtain it?"
So far, it's unclear to Satchiko if this iron clad human have uncovered Mayumi's true identity. But her sister only answered as though nothing is wrong, explaining about the meeting on the bridge, and obviously changing some details such as her identity.
"So you came to the city looking for work to provide for family, very admirable. Say, where did you came from?" The Judge tested.
Satchiko is standing behind his back, giving her sister confusing hand signs and mouth movements. It was a feasible attempt to coney some possible cover story that may convince the veteran.
Mayumi thought long and hard, and answered bluntly. "I came from Jian Sin. Escaping war with my parents and a little brother."
The general initially met Mayumi with silence, but decided to ask again, much to Satchiko's irritation. "It must be very difficult to experience so much suffering with the constant warfare. So, what are your thoughts on initial outbreak of the war? Who do you think was in the wrong?"
This question is only easy for those who are knowledgeable to the conflict right outside the walls. But to Mayumi who is only pretending to be a Jian Sin refugee, would not have the sufficient information by just listening to the radios.
Behind the general, Satchiko waved at Mayumi, and then shake her head violently. Without words, the younger sibling is helping no one.
"Siaw Jong, because they invaded Jian Sin and committed countless atrocities on the land." Mayumi sounded certain.
The Judge of Honghai nodded, approving the answer. "That is true, the nefarious acts done by the state of Siaw Jong shall not go unpunished. The ones who have instigated the unspeakable horrors in the city of Langshu must be brought to justice, no matter the cost. But I would have preferred if you would also mention that it all started when Jian Sin attacked first." He turned around and look at Satchiko. "Your sister seems to know a bit more than you do, surprising."
"Satchiko!" Mayumi cried, believing her sister have informed the Judge about their identity.
"I didn't tell him that!" Satchiko then turned to the general. "How do you know that person was my sister?"
"Because you just told me," the Judge replied, much to Satchiko and Mayumi's dismay. Although, he might have already deducted Mayumi as a Kyoshi warrior. It also does not help that green Kimono is not part of Jian Sin's clothing. "Anyway, we are going off topic here aren't we, the umbrella?"
"Oh yes, the umbrella." Mayumi reluctantly gave it to the Judge. Upon further examination, the military commander confirmed that it is indeed an original. "But I don't understand, what is so special about this umbrella? When he gave it to me, he wasn't even the Zhuangyuan."
"Well, I suppose a simple way to answer this is just these Upper Ring folks being their usual decadent selves. Useless gossiping and fancy tea drinking that serves no purpose." The Judge answered with a hint of disgust. Military personnel and Upper class citizens reside in completely opposite environments. Which is why it is easy for battle hardened men to belittle the Upper Ring's affluent pettiness just as how the reverse also happens."
"But why is everyone looking at my sister as if she has stolen something?" Satchiko pondered. She swiped her head around, noticing that some of the guests are still looking at her sister. In fact, some of Mayumi's fellow workers also cannot help but beam at that umbrella. "Oh, you are back. Where have you been? You missed the whole ceremony." She noticed Han Fei casually making his way over here. The museum director don't seemed distraught at all. In fact, he now carried a rather leisurely attitude.
"Was Shan instated as the Zhuangyuan?" He asked.
"Why are you asking a question of which you already know the answer for?" The Judge questioned without facing the official. He savored some tea after giving the umbrella back to Mayumi.
"As expected of the Tortoise himself." Han Fei praised with a smirk. "Reading people's mind and keeping others guessing what is inside yours. If it wasn't for certain complications, you certainly would already be having a seat on the council of five."
Satchiko glanced at the Judge, who is still holding onto a plate of food. He hadn't been eating them since Han Fei walked back in. The general rested the food on the table nearby and left the scene.
"Leaving so soon?" Han Fei mused. "The party isn't over yet."
"There is one more section of the museum I have not visited." The iron clad man answered dryly. He soon disappeared behind the vast doors of the throne room.
Satchiko felt her left hand grabbed by Mayumi. Her sister informed her that now would be the best chance to talk with Lady Te. Across the room, Te Gaogui is sulking with disappointment despite her father's best attempt to cheer her up. It's surprising how softhearted Te Laoye is behaving after all the loud verbal quarrels with Xuan Zang.
They walked towards the father and daughter duo, leaving Han Fei behind.
"But I was going to explain-" Han Fei sighed, then lowered his head and smiled, amused by the situation. "I should have expected that. It's them after all."
...
The Royal Palace grounds have a quiet and serene elegance to anyone fortunate enough to visit it. In the past, access to the intricate gardens and various facilities are only permissible under the invitation of the Earth King. Today, it seems that even a girl from a small insignificant island can be one of those people lucky enough to walk on the cleanly paved stones.
Two young women rested on polished green granite chairs. Despite the hardness of the material, the external surface is extraordinarily smooth, providing comfort and cementing the craftsman's stonecutting mastery. It is likely that bending was used to craft such furniture.
The housekeeper named Aunt Ayi arrived at the round granite table between the two women. Using a porcelain tea set, she prepared beverages from small dark colored leaves boiled in water. The three of them are shaded underneath a lush tree in an area surrounded by abundant amounts of topiary bushes, once catered to the monarch's insatiable crave of diverse tea flavors. From a distance, they can even see the Tea Palace used by the Earth Monarch to entertain guests. The brightly painted wooden pavilion is the centerpiece of this lush garden. Once it was maintained by countless servants, now only a small handful of gardeners curate here.
When Ayi is done, Te Gaogui picked up one of the porcelain cups. She carefully used her available fingers of one hand to hold the lid, gently swaying the leaves into boiling water to induce flavor. Gently, she held the cup to her mouth and savored the refreshing brew with minor sips.
With equal relative ease, Mayumi did the same. But without those long silver nail guards, the waitress in dirty aprons experienced less hinderance, taking tiny sips before resting the cup back on the granite surface. Despite how out of place her dress is compared to the intricately designed surrounding, her mastery her people's tea ceremony etiquette are not to be trifled with.
"It is a quiet afternoon, don't you think?" Te Gaogui began with a polite comment on the environment. A conversation held during tea drinking can be either very serious or leisurely. In this case, perhaps the noble lady wanted a mix of both, considering the tremendous amount of disappointment from the Keju ceremony before. Most of time, drinking tea with another is meant to show appreciation and mindfulness with the nature around them, Te Gaogui wish to glamour at the environment before engaging the main topic.
"Indeed," Mayumi replied. She savored the tea once again, tasting while maintaining eye contact with Gaogui.
"It is said that this area have every kind of tea ingredients in the world. From the outer fringes of the Earth Kingdom to the dry Si Wong deserts, you can find every plants available for brewing. I told Aunt Ayi to choose one in the garden. What do you think is inside the ones we drank?"
Clearly it was some form of trivial test. One to examine Mayumi's knowledge. She took another small but careful slurp from her cup, and then looked at the dark green tea leaves themselves. Now that she thought about it, her father occasionally brews tea with it and shared it with the family. While her sister and mother has no interest in this, she has found a strange fondness with tea drinking, perhaps a penchant inherited from Hakaru.
"Oolong tea," Mayumi said with absolute certainty. "But not just any Oolong, these tea leaves are named after the Kamu...I mean the Spirit of Mercy, Tieguanyin." There was no doubt. The taste and appearance of the tea itself gives away the name. Some called it, the Iron Goddess tea, tracing its origins to a another giant humanoid entity similar to the legendary Lady Tienhai of western Earth Kingdom.
Gaogui looked impressed. But the reserved behavior forbade her to be over-expressive. A simple rise in her eyelid is enough for Mayumi to know.
"My father is tea lover," the waitress added, quelling Gaogui's curiosity. "I have learnt plenty from him, but I doubt not even he have tasted the palatableness of the White Dragon bush."
This garnered Te Gaogui's immediate interest. "So you have tasted it before?" she asked Mayumi.
The waitress closed her eyes and nodded once. Despite this tea garden's abundance of every kind of plants and trees, she highly doubt that the famed White Dragon bush is cultivated here. After tasting the brew made with the flower petals before. Why would anyone here settle for lesser quality tea?
Silently, a object dropped from the wooden branches above them. It landed right into Mayumi's cup, floating gently on her tea's surface. It's a leaflet from a gingko tree, foretold to be used for brewing tea for Earth Monarchs, with the aim to treat illnesses associated with old age. This tree next to them is said to be more than a thousand years old.
Just as Mayumi proceeds to remove it, Te Gaogui stopped her.
"You do appear to be a bit stressed lately, keep that gingko leaf in the tea, it will help. Speaking of which, how is life in the Lower Ring?" The noble lady then scanned Mayumi's damaged kimono and the apron that covers over it. Rarely do Upper Ring citizens ever associate themselves with commoners, in fear that they will be mocked by other wealthy households. But here, Gaogui is giving Mayumi the look of genuine pity. As if somehow they are already old friends despite sharing limited encounters.
"Life is fine," Mayumi insisted in an amicable manner. "But thanks for worrying about me."
"But it could have been better," Gaogui argued in an approachable voice. Despite her friendly gesture to the Kyoshi warrior, she still maintains the serious demeanor expected from a noblewoman. "Don't you ever grow tired of toiling away in the restaurant, braving kitchen fire and cleaning dirty dishes. I gave you the chance to live in a better environment."
"But it would not be fair, at least I don't find the absolute need to accept that generous offer of yours. Besides, if I did accept your offer and live in the Upper Ring, what am I going to do to preoccupy myself?" Mayumi chuckled lightheartedly. She will not hide anything this time. From the very first encounter, Te Gaogui have proven to be someone who values honesty over embellished words. Any hidden intent will be easily dismantled. "But please do forgive my selfishness, for I came here because I believe you are the best person to help me."
On their way here, Mayumi already briefly explained the situation. The predicament of her sister is of course difficult to fully unravel. To simply put it, Satchiko is failing at her education. The worst of all, her progress in Earth Bending have not advanced at all. So far, the limit is still lifting tiny pebbles and floating it in the air.
"I would not mind assisting your sibling in her endeavors, unfortunately." Te Gaogui's next act confirms Mayumi's worst fears. She removed the nail guards, revealing the long but carefully maintained nails on the fingers. "Did you very expect someone like me to be one of those earth hurlers? After all, a bender cannot learn bending from non-benders just as a warrior cannot learn swordsmanship from someone without arms."
"I understand," Mayumi took another sip from the cup. This time, the tea's flavor changed. The addition of a gingko leaf in the brew may be the cause. Still, it did tasted a bit sour when she found out Lady Te is not an Earth Bender. "I am grateful for your time, sorry to trouble you. I will not delay your schedules further." Just as she wanted to stand up and leave, Te Gaogui smirked.
"I do enjoy drinking tea, don't you? Aren't you going ask why I brought you all the way out here?" Gaogui asked.
"No, but I do believe you have other matters you wanted to discuss." Mayumi looked at Lady Te, who is still handling her loss at the Keju ceremony very well. She wondered just how much more Gaogui can endure until that veil of perfection demanded by others finally crack. Pressure and expectations imposed by others can be an obstacle to a carefree life. As for the reasons why Lady Te decided to meet in a secluded tea garden, she may have a faint clue, a rather uncomfortable one to discuss.
The umbrella, previously handed to Aunt Ayi for care, is now placed on the table. The middle aged housekeeper opened it on the granite, allowing Te Gaogui to examine it thoroughly. Lady Te brushed her hands across the smooth paper, as though one can physically touch the lifelike mountain and water within the ink painting.
"It's beautiful, more than I ever thought. You can clearly tell each stroke of the paint brush is done with the upmost perfection. I wouldn't be surprised if the Spirits themselves are also impressed." Gaogui complimented the calligraphy and imagery. She then looked at Mayumi. The Kyoshi warrior cannot help but feel this umbrella itself is a cause of contention. "It's strange isn't it? In life, some people do not get what they want even if they worked so hard. Yet, others can obtain it effortlessly."
"It's just an umbrella," Mayumi stated.
"I know, but you also must be aware that some people will do everything just to get their hands on it. The hearts of women is a fickle thing."
"I can assure you Lady Te," Mayumi addressed courteously. "I did not know that the person who gave me this umbrella was the Zhuangyuan. After you gave me a ride on the carriage that day, the sky rained and I headed for the direction of the Lower Ring. Is is there that I encountered the stranger who gifted me this umbrella. Nothing occurred between the two of us."
Te Gaogui sighed. "This isn't an interrogation, don't be so tense." She then stood up, facing towards the countless sea of green plants and tea bushes. "Besides, how can I fault you when that man isn't even the Zhuangyuan when you first meet him? And to be fair, not even I expected him to be so successful in the Keju."
Mayumi joined her by the side. Both marveling the scenery of a diverse landscape of tea bushes. "Just who is that man? They call him Shan, but I know almost nothing about him." There is little that is known about the young scholar wearing white robe. In fact, his name itself doesn't even produce a significant family name. The only thing that she know for certain is that he wrote a book on Earth Kingdom cultures studied by the Judge of Honghai, which did not pages on Kyoshi island.
Te Gaogui inhaled deeply and let out a long duration of breath. "If you are seeking knowledge, then I am afraid I don't have much to provide either. Shan is someone whose origin is a mystery. Frankly, his parents are not even present during the ceremony. But I will say, despite his certain personality, he has the capability to back up his words." She picked up her teacup, refreshing herself before continuing. "Renown scholar, and a top political science graduate of Ba Sing Se's university, that man is not only a great talent, he is an intellectual heavyweight, it is unfortunate that he is greater than me. But to achieve so much as such a young age, he is highly respected even before the Keju."
"B-but how does that explain...this?" Mayumi pointed at the umbrella.
"What do you mean?" Gaogui asked.
"When I held this umbrella, why are people looking at me as though I have committed a crime?" Mayumi tried not to let her frustration loose. She tried so hard to not stand out in the city, relinquishing her Kyoshi warrior armor and the signature face paint. Yet, despite all the efforts, she received unwanted attention from all the powerful members of society, making the past hard work absolutely meaningless. There were many aristocrats present at the ceremony. Her instincts told her that further trouble will occur down the line.
"Well," Gaogui sighed. "Perhaps it's because people will jump to certain conclusions. If you know what I mean."
Mayumi understood such implications. As grotesque as it may sound, false rumors will spread like a wildfire amongst the aristocracy. While this may probe to be an inconvenience, she also believe Gaogui is insinuating more. "Please do elaborate," she requested. Te Gaogui closed her eyes, gaining some posture before finally explaining it all.
"In all my years of studying philosophy and political science, I came to realize one truth," Gaogui began. "No matter how much we have progressed, there will always be that urge to cling onto the old ways. Just look at the Earth Kingdom, slow to adapt, many still promote outdated values while disguising themselves as morally correct. What I am saying is, no matter how certain things like diplomacy have evolved, the power of familial ties are not to be underestimated. Many people of course only seek to take the best thing they can hold onto. The cleanest fruit in the basket, the freshest fish from in the barrel. Of course, the most talented individual in all of Ba Sing Se. Then there is Shan, a young scholar, a rising star of this city. Despite his adolescence, he already achieved so much more than his older peers. Even before the Keju exam, he is already an accomplished expert in social science and philosophy. Recognized for his talent, many people covets him, yearning for his attention. But now that he is a Zhuangyuan, a highly acclaimed title that carries the potential that may affect this city's future. He is now no longer just some reward Like any Zhuangyuan before their political career, Shan is an invaluable individual to have on your side."
Mayumi swallowed her throat hard. It was hard to fully grasp what Gaogui truly meant. "D-do you also have the same intentions?"
Gaogui looked at her with a pair of eyes that emitted competition. "I do," she handed the umbrella back to the waitress. "But my reasons are beyond than just simple affection. Kyoshi warrior, do you ever ask yourself, why do people desire the affection of another person?"
"There are many reasons," Mayumi said. "But seeing where this conversation is heading, I suppose the answer is personal gain rather than true love."
"Correct," Gaogui confirmed. Although many still seek love and affection for either petty or childlike causes, there are also those who commit such acts for necessity. Take the case of Ximen Qing as an example. The young heir is the inheritor of the most prominent Earth Kingdom family in the Upper Ring. Although he is not a highly acclaimed Zhuangyuan, a woman can obtain significant amount of power by becoming Ximen clan's next head lady. While such reasons can be considered lowly, many young women saw it as an opportunity to advance upward in social mobility. But many who were tempted and seduced by the notorious Ximen Qing chose to conform, and the motivations may be vary. "I don't mind a fair competition, but I have to tell you that my reasons are beyond my own gains. If I can form an alliance with this Zhuangyuan, I am leaving a door open to my family, my people and my home. I can only request that you won't interfere."
"I won't, I don't even want to," Mayumi reiterated. She looked straight into Te Gaogui's eyes. "But why are you are giving yourself to someone without considering your own wellbeing, is it because of your father's will?" It is likely that what Gaogui is talking about here is an informal practice of political marriage. As a chief's daughter, she is unfortunately too familiar with the concept. The idea of marrying others for alternative motives is a huge insult to the other person. In the past, there are cases involving a suitor and their parents wish to foster familial ties using arranged marriages. But thanks to Kyoshi island's local culture, a daughter can have the power to refuse a betrothal, a practice that is not always available in many parts of the world.
"No Kyoshi warrior, you got it wrong," Te Gaogui softly replied. "It's the reverse. I was the one who propose this idea. Ironically my father was the one who resisted." She then laughed bitterly. "Father must be embarrassed, how his daughter then offer such wanton proposition after what happened earlier with Shan."
Mayumi is baffled. "But why? Why are you putting yourself through this?" To her, the idea of a woman deliberately subjecting themselves to an arranged marriage is almost unfathomable. Under normal circumstances, it is either the parents forcing their children to be betrothed or the couple marry for true love. In Te Gaogui's case, it's neither.
"Because our lady believe that only by marrying Shan can the people of Zigan be safe!" Aunt Ayi uttered. Te Gaogui looked at her with a bewildered expression. For a moment, Mayumi believed that Lady Te would reprimand the servant for speaking out of line. But nothing very happened. Instead, Gaogui quickly recomposed herself, nodding at Ayi's words.
"Yes, that is true," Gaogui muttered.
"How is marrying a scholar from Ba Sing Se got to do with anything related to the people of your homeland?" Mayumi asked. "You said you wanted to be with him, but you don't even display the faintest sigh of affection." She then looked at Gaogui, who is still looking deeply into the environment and not facing her. "You don't even seem to like him."
"I don't necessaryily need to like him," Gaogui answered as she watched a pair of birds landing on a tree. "You are a warrior, and see the world through different lens, but for me, family and duty is honored not through the might of weapons and battle. As archaic as it sounds, forging familial ties with a potentially esteemed government official will safeguard my homeland Zigan...hopefully."
Mayumi didn't argue. While both herself and Te Gaogui have a similar upbringing as daughters to leaders, it would be unfair to compare directly. Judging by the noblewoman's discontent with the second place title Bangyan, it is likely that there is a vast rift with what a Zhuangyuan can achieve in terms of civil service. From her own limited understanding, a person's performance and ranking on the civil service examination directly affects their career outlook. As for the first placeholders, they will be offered a very high government position in the bureaucracy, supposedly working close to the Earth Monarchy in the past. When wielding such astounding official power, there are many opportunities. Working as a trusted advisor to the Earth Monarch can influence key decisions. In some cases, powerful officials even take charge to implement new policies without the ruler's oversight. If this still somehow applies now, than Te Gaogui's goal was supposed to use official powers to devise long term benefits to her homeland. Despite lacking any authority over the rest of the continent, the neutral city of Ba Sing Se is still a major player in the civil wars that plagued the rest of the continent. With so much warlords and organizations fighting for control, powerful allies are not only beneficial, but even necessary for a state's survival. Since just being a renown beauty is not enough, by becoming a top ranking government official, Lady Te may yield higher chance to influence certain policies that dictates the city's relationship with her homeland. Of course, all these reasons remain only as Mayumi's speculations.
"I never thought it would ever come to this." Te Gaogui lamented. There was a tiny hint of sorrow, barely detectable. "For all my life, I reminded myself that I never chose to be born into the nobility. I never earned my position, nor do I believe that I should take it for granted. All I wanted was to see the people of Zigan safe, to fulfill the duty as a daughter of the Te clan."
"And you believe that somehow the Zhuangyuan can help you?" Mayumi asked. "After how he disrespected both you and your father? She still haven't forgotten how Shan acted. Even if Te Laoye may have acted with rash, it still does not excuse the scholar's attack on the family.
"It's pathetic isn't it?" Te Gaogui breathed a sigh. "I suppose there is no better choice. I might have failed to obtain the title of Zhuangyuan, but forging familial ties with the one who have it is not a bad idea. Doing so will yield more benefits to my people than what I have now."
"But you will be sacrificing your happiness," Mayumi stated.
"A small price to pay," Te Gaogui countered calmly. "I might not have any feelings for him, but true love is nothing more but a luxury few can truly indulge. Besides, I do believe the Zhuangyuan is a reasonable man. I will have to discuss this matter more with my father of course."
Anyone is better than the devilry Ximen Qing. For the distinguished Lady Te, the flower that outshine all others, is naturally fitting to be betrothed with someone of high caliber and endless talent. Shan's title as the Zhuangyuan meant he will have the greatest potential being elevated to the top of the administration. With a swimmingly political career, having some sort of ties with this young protégé may yield future benefits. When a farmer cultivates the crop at an optimal time of the year, the harvest will naturally be bountiful.
"Lady Te," Mayumi said. She held the umbrella, presenting it to the noblewoman. "I want you to have it. I believe this gift is much more fitting for you."
"I refuse," Gaogui declined immediately. "It's not meant for me in the first place. You said it yourself, and I agree, it's no good to receive something easily without earning it first."
"Then...do you know where the Zhuangyuan lives?"
Gaogui looked a little bewildered, but managed to contain the expression. "Y-you want to return the umbrella?" Mayumi isn't sure if the noble lady is regretting not accepting the offer earlier.
"I never consider this umbrella to be a gift, but simply something being lend to me." Mayumi closed the umbrella, placing it on her side. The umbrella crafted by Shan is an exquisite item, made with a rare kind of reddish wood and decorated with artistic paintings and calligraphy. Even the paper felt very smooth. She knew how ludicrous it sounds, returning what is a supposedly extravagant gift desired by essentially every maiden in the city. Here, a brilliant scholar is highly sought. But for her, this piece of parasol is just a hinderance.
Gaogui sighed, directing Ayi to pull out a sheet of paper and an ink brush. Putting on the table, she wrote down the location of where the Zhuangyuan resides. It is somewhere in the Upper Ring, a small square shaped compound in the residential area.
"You are very interesting, Mayumi the Kyoshi warrior." Gaogui seems to be amused by something about the brown haired girl. "Anyone else would not have declined my offer to live in the Upper Ring. It is a shame that you are also unwilling to keep Shan's umbrella, which is still a highly sought after item."
"Well, just like what you said, unwanted conclusions will be drawn by the others, wouldn't it?" Mayumi smile bitterly. "It's better this way. The likes of me would not look well holding an umbrella like this." She is not clueless by how the aristocracy of the Upper Ring view those below them. Mere lowly waitresses who dare compete with the elegant ladies in a world of intrigue don't often end up well. It's fine when situations like these are contained in poems and stories, and she intends to keep it that way.
Mayumi bowed to Gaogui and strolled down the path that leads her away from the tea garden. It is unfortunate that Te Gaogui is unable to assist. But then again, she should have heeded the signs. Rarely do noble ladies of the Upper Ring ever associate themselves with Earth Bending. Such art forms require moving the grounds on which they stand on, dirtying their dresses. Which is why even if a daughter of wealthy clan is blessed with power Earth Bending, she doubt that the parents would allow their heiress to act rough and unladylike.
"Hey big sis," Satchiko called out from another tea tree, which was used as a shade. She was just hovering two small pebble in rotation between her palms. "Did Te Gaogui wanted to take me as a student?"
Mayumi shook her head, making her sister produce a small frown. "It was worth a try I suppose." They both ventured off, deciding to make their way back to the Royal Palace. Since their goals of meeting Lady Te has been met, there is no longer any incentives to remain here. She knew her sister isn't too keen with a personal teacher. But pragmatically, it would be for the best.
Instead of inquiring more about their predicament, Satchiko diverted the subject. "What do you think dad would react if we bring him to this tea garden? I don't like drinking hot leaf juice, but he would be very happy to be surrounded with so many tea plants."
It is true. Any tea addict in the world would view this tea garden as paradise. She did enjoy the diverse yet organized scenery performed by the garden. "I am sure father would love it. Speaking of tea, you still got the White Dragon flower?"
"Still do," Satchiko then laughed. "Just wait until I surprise him when we get back." Her smile faded a little. Mayumi understand the difficulty her sister is experiencing. This journey alone have taken a heavy toll of Satchiko's wellbeing. As an older sister, she must work even harder to support her over the trials and challenges.
"It will be fine," Mayumi reassured, and smiled warmly. "I will just find another person who have bending and is willing to help tutor you. We are Kyoshi Warriors, you think we would give up that easily? Besides, the spirit of Avatar Kyoshi herself watches over us." It may take a while. But Ba Sing Se is a city filled with scholars, surely they can find an Earth Bender who is well versed in both bending and the intellectual side of it.
"Mayumi," Satchiko said as they are nearing the Royal Palace. "I have a question."
"Go on."
"Remember how before bedtime, mum used to told me about stories of Avatar Kyoshi?"
Thinking about it, Mayumi cannot help but feel nostalgic. In life, simply watching her little sister listening to stories is a joy she savored. "You meant how mother told you about the founder defeated the leader of the Yellow Necks daofei, overpowered a shark squid and defeated Chin? You were a small and cute toddler back then." Mayumi smirked. Without permission, she began gently pinching Satchiko's cheeks, playing around with them. "Well, you still are one, only difference is that your appetite have gotten much larger."
Satchiko crossed her arms. As Mayumi continued to toy with her face, she voiced another segment of their founder's legacy. "What about the part when Kyoshi helped to introduced new reforms to the Earth Kingdom? You know, the whole story about how the Monarchy must be reformed to meet the people's needs?"
"Yeah, there is that I guess," Mayumi replied casually as she gently made Satchiko's mouth look swollen. It is a hilarious sight, a 'technique' invented by Orihime when Satchiko was still small enough to be held in their mother's arms.
"How come mum never told me anything about the government official who helped Kyoshi, some guy named Shen Buhai?" Satchiko said in a swollen voice. The hands that gripped her mouth immediately loosened. She looked at Mayumi, wondering why her sister have frozen in place. "Big sis, you alright?" she asked in a normal voice.
Mayumi retracted her hands, slowly wiping them on her apron. She then gripped the umbrella tighter.
"Sister, listen to me," Mayumi looked at Satchiko straight in the eye. "I don't know who told you about it. I want you to stay away from them as much as possible, understand?"
"Bu-"
"That's enough, Maiko. We are not to reveal anyone else about our identity, that is final." Mayumi raised her voice slightly. This made immediately Satchiko lowered her head. And no further arguments followed. That word itself acts like an order. Words have the power of life and death, it can also be used for many things.
...
The Judge of Honghai entered an empty room, dimly lit, populated with various artifacts hailing from one theme. This is the place he have been waiting to visit, to reminiscent about. As the others partied and the Zhuangyuan preparing to be paraded his achievements around the city, he decided now would be a good time to gallivant a specific part of the museum.
An empty glass case stood before him. Inside is a sword holder, but the curators of this establishment have yet to retrieve the long lost legendary blade of the tyrant himself.
But neither have he.
The blade they both sought after is of course none other than the Jian of Chin, the artifact rivaling the Earth Kingdom imperial seal in terms of importance. But only one of them will get it, and he will make sure it would him.
He was then greeted with other trivial items from that specific era. Every single artifacts displayed in here were excavated from Chin's underground mausoleum. Weapons, armors and even old chariots unearthed from giant tomb. But the most eye catching pieces are perhaps the countless life sized soldiers lined up against the walls like a cohesive unit.
Terracotta warriors, taken from the original tomb, were built in the image of the mighty legions who served under Chin. Believed to be created to guard the tyrant in death, an army of these soldiers exist. These men made of clay wore an old style of lamellae of small metal plates connected with one another other. It covers their chest and shoulders, but leaving the head exposed as their faces are carved with unique facial features dominated with a recurring style of exquisite mustache, which may be inspired from the man himself.
It's easy to discard them as all based on a single person. But slight details and closer examination would reveal that each of them are different in terms of height and facial expressions.
Walking through multiple units of terracotta men, he observed each of their faces. To him, it's easy to believe that an army is just one giant blob fools who follow their commanders without question. Although soldiers who follow orders unconditionally is highly prized by military commanders, he doesn't necessarily believe it. To him, blindly obeying military orders without question is like a mindless beast, a livestock being fed with food which may potentially kill them. A soldier who does not question why they fight, or giving themselves to an unjust or self-deceiving cause, is nothing more but a tiny worthless cog that is easily dispensable.
As he finally arrived at the center, he was met with an old war chariot with a large metal umbrella installed to it. It is also another piece of artifact unearthed from Chin's tomb, a less armored and simpler design compared to the ones used today. Four bronze ostrich horses are near identical to their real life counterparts, even the individual features were intricately recreated.
There is a terracotta warrior manning the chariot. The Judge checked the dusty platform using one of his iron boots, ensuring that it is sturdy enough to stand on. Once he felt no one is looking, he gently stepped onto the chariot, grasping the handrails and leaning his body against it.
The room felt silent as he observed the small army of terracotta warriors. While these clay men are built in the image of people, they obviously do not speak.
"It is rude when people enter an exhibit room that is not opened yet," a smooth voice sounded from the entrance. "Clearly, our esteemed visitor have missed the wooden sign, warning that this area is still under contraction. It would be unfortunate if anything valuable here is stolen as a result of your trespass."
The Judge of Honghai didn't seem afraid at the new arrival. In fact, as museum director Han Fei arrived in front of the four bronze ostrich horses, the general grasped the chariot's handrails even more tighter. "Why should you be afraid that something would be stolen, grave robber." He retorted. Since everything inside this exhibit room is built for Chin's tomb, naturally taking them all the way here has a certain degree of disrespect. But Chin is a tyrant, so in a weird way, it shouldn't be too controversial. Well, except for those eerie folks in Chin village, they will certainly be furious seeing artifacts of their fallen leader being placed used in museum instead of honoring his death.
In both Earth King and Fire Nation culture, the philosophy of Rujia placed a heavy emphasis on honoring family and those who have passed on. Anyone disrespecting the rite and rob from a person's grave is committing a major morale transgression. To dishonor someone's grave is to also tell the world that you disrespect Rujia itself.
Han Fei erupted into a cheerful laughter. "A great riposte by the Tortoise himself. But then again, why would the likes of me ever respect the grave of the mad tyrant, hmm? After all, I doubt Chin the tyrant would notice a few of his so called soldiers gone missing. Surely, he already has enough to guard him. Losing a few isn't an issue in the grand scheme of the battle."
"Each subordinate is different, a story that must be told." The Judge of Honghai climbed off the chariot. "Losing even one is never an easy thing. Maybe you are a bit different, but to me, I never moved on."
Han Fei smirked. "Still the same aren't you? Still so trusting of those serving under you. Eventually, there will be those who do not carry out your will, or have committed acts which displeases you. People may see you as an invincible bulwark, but remember this, loyalty is never necessary for your subordinate's service, but technique do."
"And just how many times have you spout such ideals to me?" The Judge arrived right in front of Han Fei, staring down at him. "Perhaps you should let me decide what I do to my subordinates, or else I won't hesitate to meddle in whatever foul potion you are brewing, alchemist."
End of chapter notes:
-Spoiler for canon comic: Lady Tienhai is a real spirit in canon story, Tieguanyin does not exist in canon, but the tea does exist in real life.
-The phrase to seize the head of a lion turtle is similar to the real life Keju ceremony where the Zhuanyuan is described as to have alone seized Ao's head. Ao is a chinese mythological turtle.
-The government official outfit of Shan is inspired from the Ming dynasty. Although, I do admit it does not fit aesthetically well with his Qing dynasty hairstyle. But don't worry, it will be corrected in future.
-Names: I want to point out that majority of characters in the Avatar world don't seem to have a surname. Exceptions are given to people like the Beifong and Sato family, both influential people in canon. As you read through the chapters, you may notice that the family name is written from left to right, instead of how Toph Beifong is structured. In real life, names like these are often pronounced surname first, and then the rest. Which means the whole name of Toph would be pronounced as Beifong Toph instead of what we have now. At the same time, the surname Beifong(北方) is also a two worded character family name, which is actually rare in China. A notable historical family clan like this would be the Sima clan.
