"I just don't understand why someone would just drag a pregnant woman into a boarded up and abandoned house. It makes no sense to me."

Jamie peered over at Eddie and blinked. He'd already had his 4 beers and was trying to forget about the days events.

"I dunno Eddie, maybe the guy was high on something. She had three bullet wounds to the chest. She didn't have a chance. That baby is alive. She has a chance."

Eddie took a long sip of her beer and then added her thought.

"Well, now that Ellie is in the system we can only hope she goes to live with a loving family. The system is pretty much overwhelmed."

Jamie kept eyeing Eddie, his eyes were becoming bleary. Setting his empty bottle of beer down, he responded.

"Ellie? You gave her a name? What happened to: 'I'm just going with her to the hospital because she's scared?' You were only going to stay with her for a few minutes."

Eddie shrugged her shoulders and stuffed another onion ring in her mouth. As she was about to answer back, she felt herself choking on the huge bite of onion ring she took. Jamie's eyes grew wide and his hand went immediately to her back, hitting it to get the piece of food dislodged.

"Eddie? Can you cough it up?"

Eddie managed to shake her head no. Her mind was racing. Death by onion ring. She could barely wrap her mind around what was going on. Suddenly, she felt someone's strong arms around her waist. Then her stomach was beginning to hurt. Then she felt a huge cough bubble up and the onion ring landed on her plate in front of her. A coughing fit now consumed her. She felt Jamie's hand on her back. While the other handed her, her beer bottle.

"Here. Take a drink. Can you breathe? Take slow, deep breaths."

When she could finally breathe, Eddie's voice was barely above a whisper, making Jamie strain just to hear over the loud music of the bar.

"Death by onion ring almost got me. Did you just do the Heimlich on me?"

Jamie nodded and watched her for a moment.

"You were choking Eddie. What else was I supposed to do? I wasn't going to let you choke to death. No more onions rings for you. We should probably call it a night. Neither of us have a tour tomorrow, but its late. Come on, I'll walk you home."

Eddie nodded and paid her tab. Walking out the door, she looked back at Jamie. He caught up to her.

"Come on partner. You can wait in my apartment while you wait for an Uber."

Jamie frowned, they were now at Eddie's apartment.

"I'd better not. Besides, there is a cab two blocks down. Here you are Eddie I'll see you Monday. Goodnight."

When Jamie woke up the next day, he found himself in an uncomfortable position on his couch. His head throbbing from a massive hangover. Dragging himself to his feet, he made it to the bathroom to clean himself up. Twenty minutes later, Jamie felt a little better that he was cleaned up. Making his way over to the kitchen to grab something to eat, he found four text messages on his phone. Three of them were his family and one from Eddie. One from Danny, one from Erin and another from Nicky. All asking if he was coming to dinner or not. He looked at the time on his phone. He hadn't realized he'd spent most of the day sleeping. Grabbing for his keys and jacket, he headed for the door to his apartment and answered Eddie's text.

'You have nothing to be sorry about last night. You needed to let off some steam. Partners are good for bouncing ideas and leaning on each other. I've got your back. I'll see you next week Eddie. Have a good day. I'm glad you're ok.'

Shoving his phone into his jacket pocket Jamie headed out to his car. It would take him a bit to reach his father's and grandfather's house in Bay Ridge.

"Hey everyone! Sorry I'm late!"

Jamie heard groans come from the table as he sat down. Danny decided to take a playful jab at him.

"Late night kid?"

Jamie explained himself after they said grace and started passing plates of roast beef and vegetables.

"You could say that. But not what you think Danny. Eddie and I had a few beers last night after tour. Yesterday's tour was rough. Eddie and I responded to an abandoned residence for trespassing. We get to the house and the door's kicked open.

There's a trail of fresh blood in the doorway. Eddie calls for back up, but we both hear a baby crying inside. She decides to go in after her. So I follow her. We clear all the rooms and find that the far back bedroom has the body of a woman with three gun shot wounds to the chest and her newborn baby mere feet from her that she had just given birth to. The woman was already gone by the time Eddie and I found her. The baby, a little girl was still attached to her mother when Eddie and I found her. So I cut the umbilical cord and tied off the end with my shoelace and wrapped the baby up in my jacket. Eddie insisted that she stay with her on the way to the hospital. Eddie never came right out and said it, but, I think she was starting to get attached to the baby. She even gave her a name. Ellie."

Erin was the first to speak.

"Hopefully CPS can find her a good home. No one deserves to be alone."

Frank chose this moment to voice his thoughts.

"Hence the reason you and Eddie are suspended for a week for disobeying orders and not waiting for back up. But the upside to this is the two of you saved a baby."

Jamie nodded and continued his story.

"Eddie's really sticking to this. I keep telling her that we can't save every puppy in the pound. I ended up saving two lives yesterday. The baby was the first one. Eddie was the second. She almost choked to death on an onion ring. I had to give her the Heimlich."

Erin piped up after taking a bite of her salad.

"Is she ok?"

Jamie nodded and swallowed a piece of his roast beef before answering.

"Yeah. She's fine. She probably won't look at onions rings again. But yeah, she's fine."

Sighing, Jamie let his mind wander. Him and Eddie were keeping this strictly professional and they were just friends off the job. Nothing more. But something tugged at him every time he looked at her. He pushed the seemingly offending thought aside, continuing his conversation.

"Well, with this week off, I'm going to work on getting some side projects done I've been putting off for weeks. I never realized how many books I have. So I'm taking a few loads up to Goodwill. I'm also going to try and fix a few things around here. I noticed there is a loose floorboard by the front door."

Henry looked at Jamie and frowned.

"That floorboard just squeaks Jamie. No need to fix it. It's just old. You think I'm going to trip and fall and hurt myself on it?"

Jamie nodded seriously.

"Yeah pop I do. That's why I'm going to be over here in the morning to fix it. So no one gets hurt. Including you."

Henry grunted and got up to go to the kitchen.

"I'm getting dessert. I got some cheesecake from Junior's."

Sighing again, Jamie knew it was going to be another long week ahead. He'd have to fill his time doing something since he wasn't working at the moment.

To Be Continued...

A/N: patrickpopp: Sorry for the confusion. I should've made it more clear in my summary that this fic was multi-chapter. This fic is completely Jamko. Not sure how many chapter's yet. I have more of an idea of how the baby will play into all this. For now, Jamie and Eddie are still partners on the job and friends while off. That'll change in later chapters.
