It was the fourth day this week Eddie had been up to see the baby. She'd named her Ellie. She knew she probably shouldn't have given her a name. Attachments were strongly discouraged, especially if a victim had blood relatives to speak of. But so far, no one had come to claim baby Ellie. The woman behind the counter looked up at Eddie as she approached.

"Officer Janko, back again today I see? You can see Ellie in a few minutes. She's in with the doctor right now."

Eddie frowned at the woman behind the counter. She held onto her purse a little tighter than she expected.

"Oh. Is everything ok?"

Baby Ellie had been here at the hospital for the last four days. Everything was so backed up on the end of child services. The woman behind the counter kept frowning.

"Poor thing. There was a couple in here yesterday that wanted to foster her, but it seems those two didn't want to take on another foster child. Especially one who's medically fragile."

Eddie felt a pit beginning to form in her stomach. Just as she was about to ask more questions, the doctor came out of the room and the woman behind the desk motioned at her.

"You can go and see her now."

Taking a deep breath, Eddie walked into the room where the nurse was holding onto a screaming Ellie. A smile came to the nurse's face when she saw Eddie.

"Office Janko. You're back again. I must say, it's nice to see someone who cares about these kids and checks up on them after they are put into the system. A lot of people wouldn't think twice about it."

Eddie sat down in the rocking chair and the nurse placed Ellie in her arms.

"Hi Ellie. Remember me? I've been coming to see you over the last few days. Look at these tiny little hands. Oh, are you hungry?"

After Eddie uttered her last sentence she saw the tiny thin tubing in her mouth. Looking up at the nurse, she asked her question.

"Why does she have a tube going to her stomach?"

The nurse took a rolling stool and sat next to Eddie.

"She has a hole in one of the vetricles to her heart. One of the veins to her heart. She's going to need a new heart. The tube, for now, is the only way she can eat. We tried feeding her a bottle when she got here, but she tired out quickly and got sweaty and started crying."

Meanwhile, out in the hallway, unbeknownst to Eddie, Jamie had arrived at the desk. The same woman who'd helped Eddie looked up at him.

"Officer Reagan. You're wife's already in there with Ellie. You're more than welcome to join her."

Jamie frowned and looked straight at the woman.

"We're partners on the job. She's not my wife."

Jamie turned on his heel and walked into the room where Eddie was situated with Ellie. She was slowly rocking Ellie sleep. He softened when he saw the tiny tube in Ellie's mouth.

"Is she ok?"

Eddie shook her head and looked away. She wasn't going to cry in front of her partner.

"No. The nurse said she has a hole in her heart. Apparently she needs a new one. The doctor said they are just waiting until she's a little bigger. They are pushing through the red tape to get her on the transplant list as soon as possible."

Jamie sat down on the vacated rolling stool. He reached his hand out and ran his index finger along her right cheek. She seemed to lean towards him.

"Here, I'll take her."

Eddie stood up, vacating the rocking chair and placed Ellie into Jamie's arms.

"Hi there sweetie. Remember me? Eddie and I saved you a few days ago. You are safe now. No one is going to hurt you."

Jamie watched as Ellie's left arm managed to sneak its way out of her blanket and her tiny hand grabbed a hold of the tube in her mouth.

"Oh, let's leave that alone sweetheart. Let's get you nice and comfy."

Standing up from the rocking chair, Jamie took Ellie over to the counter and fixed her blanket. Eddie smirked.

"How do you know how to swaddle so perfectly?"

Smirking, Jamie returned to his seat in the rocking chair, slowly rocking Ellie to sleep.

"I had lots of practice with Nicky, Jack and Sean. I also changed a lot of diapers too. Ellie is going to be ok Eddie. She's going to find a good home. It takes time for the right family to come along. Come on. Want to get some lunch? We could get Thai food. My treat."

Eddie gave a small smile. She couldn't say no to food of any kind. Jamie slowly rose from the rocking chair and handed Ellie over to a nurse who walked in. She smiled at Jamie.

"I'll be seeing the two of you tomorrow?"

Jamie shook his head.

"Me? Maybe. I know Officer Janko will be here. She said she'd be here every day until she was sure she knew Ellie went to a good family and that she was completely healthy."

The nurse only smiled at partner as they left the room. Jamie unconsciously found his left hand hovering over the small of Eddie's back.

"So Jamie, which Thai place were you thinking?"

Rolling his eyes, Jamie following Eddie, sometimes she reminded him of a younger version of himself.
