"Jamie? It's the hospital. Do you think?"
Jamie could see Eddie was faltering and he steadied her.
"Babe, sit down. Ok. Go ahead and answer. Hear them out."
Taking a deep breath, Eddie sat down and answered the phone.
"Hello? Yes this is Eddie Janko. What? When…? Jamie and I will be right over. Thank you."
As Eddie hung up her phone, she let it slip from her fingers and it clattered to the carpet. Jamie could tell by her body
language and the way she was acting that she was very upset. Before he realized it, Eddie had pulled him into a tight hug.
She began to sob into his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and rocked her a bit.
"Hey Eddie? What's wrong babe? What did they say?"
Eddie began her conversation with her face still buried in Jamie's chest.
"She doesn't deserve this…"
Jamie pulled out of Eddie's embrace long enough to take a her face in his hands. With the pads of his thumbs he wiped
her tears.
"Could you say that one more time. I couldn't understand you with your head buried in my chest."
Swallowing and clearing her throat, Eddie started over.
"Ellie… She's t-took a turn for the worse and the doctors aren't sure if she'll make it… I can't lose her Jamie! We can't lose
her!"
Jamie pulled her in for a kiss and let it linger for a moment or two.
"Hey. Look at me. Everything is going to be fine. Let's just go to the hospital and see what's going on. The doctor will
update us with anything important."
Eddie took Jamie's hands away from her head and pushed them away.
"Jamie, tell me how Ellie possibly dying or not isn't important?"
Jamie reached for Eddie's hands to bring her back towards him.
"Eddie. Babe look at me. That came out wrong. I know you're scared right now. The doctors will tell us more when we get
there ok? Come on. Let's go."
Eddie let Jamie take her hands and go towards the door. He helped her into her jacket and they soon found their way to
the hospital. She was in a near panic when they got there so Jamie did all the talking.
"Excuse me. Officers Janko and Reagan. We're here to check on the status of a baby girl we rescued named Ellie. My
partner got a call from you guys saying to come in."
The nurse behind the desk looked through a thick chart on the desk next to her. Jamie knew who's medical chart it was.
His stomach began to tie in knots. The nurse with kind eyes responded and motioned towards the hard plastic chairs in
the waiting room.
"Of course officer. The doctor will be with the two of you in a few minutes. Please have a seat."
Eddie was doing her best not to lose it, but wasn't doing a very good job because Jamie had to hold her up as they walked
to the chairs. Sitting down on it heavily, Jamie pulled Eddie close.
"Hey. Come here babe. Relax. The doc is coming out in a few minutes. Then we'll know what's going on ok?"
Eddie nodded and kept her head against Jamie's shoulder. It was an agonizing thirty minutes before the doctor came out
to the waiting room.
"Officer's Reagan and Janko?"
Jamie helped Eddie out of her chair and stood up.
"That's us doctor."
A tall doctor with glasses and thinning brown hair approached the couple and sighed. He had grim news. Jamie could tell.
So he steeled himself.
"I'm Doctor Canton. It's best if the two of you sit down. You were called down here because you were her emergency
contact. The foster family that she was with bailed on her. It seems they weren't able to come to terms with her condition.
We've contacted UNO's again to see if there had been an update of a new heart for her, but nothing so far. She was very
stable up until this morning. I see the two of you have petitioned to adopt that beautiful baby. As far as I'm concerned
and from hearing other nurses on this floor, you two may as well be her parents. I'll take you to her. I just want to
prepare you. She's on quite a few machines as you enter the room. We're keeping her as comfortable as possible. She's
just down the hall here. We put her in a separate room so she could have some privacy. Let me know if the two of you
need anything."
Jamie kept one arm around Eddie's waist, while he shook hands with Doctor Canton with his left.
"Thank you Doctor."
Eddie felt the tears well up as they entered the room. She found herself on autopilot as she sat down in the rocking chair,
her arms out for the nurse to place Ellie in. Erica was there and placed Ellie in her arms. She looked like she were about
to cry herself, but held it in.
"This sweet baby girl missed the two of you. Take you're time. There's no hurry."
Jamie pulled up another rocking chair next to Eddie and sat down. His finger of his right hand traced Ellie's tiny face. She
managed a smile for the both of them. Jamie spoke to her softly.
"Hey. There's that smile I love so much baby girl. The doctor said that bad heart was giving you some trouble. Well don't
worry, you'll get a new one real one soon. Mommy and daddy won't let anything happen to… you…"
Jamie choked on the last part of his sentence. He was having just a much a hard time with this as Eddie was. He wiped
away a few tears and ran a hand over Ellie's head. She continued to smiled up at the couple. They sat for over four hours,
not budging from either rocking chair. They weren't ready to let her go, and they weren't giving up on her either.
To Be Continued…
A/N: Don't worry. I'm not that mean. Baby Ellie will be ok.
