"I need you to stay close and not wonder off," Mayumi said to Shan. "There is no telling what they will do after we enter their territory." She remained by the scholar's side, being vigilante as they maintain a cautious distance with the scholars in front of them. Instincts demand them both to suspect that Ximen Qing is not inviting them with pleasant intentions. Although the White Scholar have not openly challenged this clan, his identity as a Zhuangyuan scholar will naturally warrant their interest.

"Your concerns are not unfounded, but martial prowess would not be needed in this upcoming endeavor." The scholar explained that the Ximen family would not commit actions that would be deemed too troublesome for the city's upper echelons. They are prideful, but not fools. Possessing a deep understanding of Ba Sing Se's law meant it is easy for them to avert punishments. The jurisdiction of Ba Sing Se and most nations of this world forbids the harming of sages and scholars, as it is considered the same as undermining the state from recruiting talented officials. Which is why Shan is absolutely confident that he will not be attacked physically.

"The Ximen family can disgust us all they want, but those nepotist are fully aware that the crime of treason is the only way to destroy their lineage," Shan stated dryly. "They didn't survive this long without playing their cards correctly. Their future clan elder does indeed perform distasteful acts. But remember, his father isn't the admiral for nothing."

Mayumi is a bit concerned that the group of scholars ahead might hear this conversation. But the White Scholar is still a very respectable figure, so none would dare reproach in fear of his sharpened speech. She pondered, faintly remembering that this city has five high ranking military commanders known as the Council of Five, and the current head of the Ximen family is also one of its members. The mere fact that Ximen Qing's father holds office in this very important institution gives powerful backing to the delinquent heir, emboldening that youth and his insatiable lust.

This is indeed somewhat similar to her own upbringing. It is undeniable that being the daughter of a village matron does provide unfair advantages over her fellow Kyoshi Warriors. She and Satchiko are inevitably treated slightly different by the people, albeit miniscule. But this city and its sophisticated hierarchy is so much different when comparing to a small island village. According to Shan, the Ximen family have rooted themselves here for centuries, forming a proud lineage that cannot be simply displaced. But Mayumi believe there is also a practical reason that explains why most do not dare to challenge the Ximen clan publicly. There are questions that she wishes to understand, mainly how Ximen Qing can behave so boldly without being apprehended. Luckily, a living source of this knowledge is literally right next to her. The young scholar has interacted with the aristocracy for many years, possessing expertise in political intrigue more what she can muster.

"I am sure by now you have grown slightly accustomed by how the Upper Ring conducts itself. Perhaps by observing Ximen Qing today, it might have been strange that he isn't put in chains."

Mayumi asked. "Isn't his disruption during the wedding an act against the local law? He clearly plotted against Gong Zi and Qian Jin, harming the people, why isn't he afraid of the law?"

As a Kyoshi Warrior, devious crimes such as wantonly meddling into other people's business is worthy of punishment. Many older members are not afraid to spill a few drops of blood to handle troublemakers. Which is why what transpired earlier should have attracted the watchful eyes of the Dai Li, or any of this city's regular patrol officers. Ximen Qing also indirectly harmed general Sun Bin's health using speech, which will obviously undermine Ba Sing Se's military in some way. It is just astonishing that delinquent can feel so confident in his deed.

"What harm can his speech do?" Shan elicited. "Ximen Qing didn't even raised a finger to attack. A man who did not even try to appear threatening cannot be reasonably placed in chains. The interference by his retainers can be considered as a response against the Zhang wise man, and fighting during a wedding is not officially against the state. Until further notice, it is reasonable to believe that Lady Qian Jin have indeed cohabitated with him, willingly. Since promiscuity is not enough to incriminate the Ximen heir, even the upper echelons can justify his incarceration."

"But Shan, most people do favor punishing him," Mayumi stated the obvious. "If prominent members of the Upper Ring decided to punish his behavior, then it would certainly benefit everyone."

The scholar's face never changes. That cold and unfazed expression suggest that he view her more simple approach as foolish.

"Sure, but what if there is a greater reason as to why they haven't done it? After all, wouldn't it be great if we can easily eliminate an eyesore without consequence?" His response was too vague for Mayumi's liking. But soon, the answer came in the form of guards stationed at a walled entrance. Those armored men appear similar to the ones responsible for protecting Jin Lian. But the lack of weapons suggests their identity as Earthbenders.

She guarded her blade carefully, eyes trained on the sentries as the dignitary of intellectuals communicated with the guards. It is clear that behind this walled gate is the residence of the Ximen family. Even just standing outside can emit their unparalleled wealth and power. The wall is higher than even Shan's siheyuan, stretching wide beyond what her eyes can see. Surrounding area is also occupied by lavish buildings, it is impressive that even this outer structure's architecture can outshine them all.

Mayumi whispered to Shan discreetly, suspicious by these guards who are affiliated with the Ximen family. Aside from inconsequential differences in the uniform, the emblem of a purple plum flower is proudly displayed each one of their chests. The symbol is a huge distinguishment with the city's other garrison troops.

One question lingers, who are they?

"Those are the Fubing troops, personal soldiers of the Ximen family," Shan answered. "Since the days of their clan founder, the monarchy bestowed the Ximen family with fiefdoms all across the four districts. This naturally means that tax revenues would directly flow into the household and not to the state. But under the policy of the Ximen clan, the inhabitants of these lands can pay lower levies in exchange for military service, an incentive that many would cherish."

"A private army," Mayumi said carefully.

"Precisely, a regiment that composed of men loyal to the house of Ximen. To say they are a mere group of bodyguards would be an understatement. It is rather strange how an admiral would have so many warriors who are trained to fight on land."

She listened carefully to his subtle change of tone. Shan is insinuating that the Fubing troops are one of the biggest pillars to the Ximen family's prominence. General Sangui, who also occupies the position of an admiral, seems to have a penchant for an army that does not fight on water. The potential size of this army, even if inexperienced, can still be a deadly force. Their benefactors equipped them with the finest steel that not even the city garrison can procure easily. It certainly would be inconvenient if this regiment suddenly turn against the city itself. But it is even more dangerous since many Earthbenders are within their ranks.

"Alright, let them through," the Fubing guards opened the elaborately built gate. Giant double doors made of hardened earth are slowly opened as the sentries moved them apart with bending.

Mayumi felt this is too grand even for a prominent household in the Upper Ring. The sunlight that shined through the opening gaps compelled her to shut both eyes. It is rather inconvenient that the afternoon sun is positioned behind the gate.

"This way, esteemed Zhuangyuan," the lead scholar invited Shan into the estate. Mayumi followed but was quickly stopped by one of the sentries, an act that her employer would ignore.

"Halt! Our liege strictly forbids weapon into the palace grounds!" the Earthbender stated. "The duty of protection will be keenly addressed by the security we provide." At the end of the day, benders can easily display potent attacks without the use of weapons, so the guards here have no need for a swordswoman who is arguably weaker.

"To my knowledge, Admiral Sangui never parts with his signature blade," Shan countered swiftly. "Perhaps they do not impose the same rule onto themselves. But yours truly can understand the dangers of assassination."

His cold gaze prevented the doorman from arguing further. The scholar then turned from the entrance, much to the dismay of the intellectuals sent to invite this prominent calligrapher.

"Takeko, let's take our leave, we must respect the will of the hosts."

"Absolutely," Mayumi entertained this. Shan is deliberately inserting the doormen guards and the group of scholars into a difficult position. If the news spread that the Zhuangyuan ranked scholar left because of this minor dispute, then their own positions within the Ximen clan's circle will be threatened.

"Wait, wait!" one of the scholars scurried next to Shan and bowed lowly. "Forgive the bluntness of Captain Hong Chengchou, he did not mean any malice. We are all simply humble servants to young master Ximen Qing. Please, for the sake of our own skin, we would be most thankful if you attend this banquet." He then arrived near 'Takeko' and whispered. Through this minor interaction, Mayumi is advised that hiding the blade underneath the clothing would be ideal, which will fulfill both their obligations.

Shan opened his fan. "Fine, I will overlook this minor transgression." He and Mayumi then headed inside. The guards wanted to protest this compromise in their security but was quickly hushed down by the men of delegation.

Mayumi and Shan entered the premise. For the former, the whole area around the stone path is infested with excessive beauty. Pristine lakes and statues, lush trees exotic in nature. She even saw some of the most beautiful flowers that are blooming wildly near the pavement. It is difficult not to admit that this garden is more prestigious than the tea garden within the Royal Palace.

"For a clan that is disdained by many, this place is delighting to look at," Mayumi cannot help but comment. They have not even arrived at the actual palace yet, and she is already captivated by the front decorations.

"Beguiling is a better word," Shan corrected her. For someone who has witnessed the finest artworks and is granted access to certain gardens within the Royal Palace, this exquisite display of the Ximen family's wealth is rather underwhelming. "Rarely have people ever been allowed into the home ground of the Ximen family, frankly I find it dull."

Even so, Mayumi cannot ignore the expansiveness of this garden. Their long walk along the stone pavement have taken them a considerable amount of time. The endless display of beautiful land is a sight to behold.

"Perhaps now would a suitable moment to explain the history of this family," Shan started. "The original founder gained the favor of the ruling Earth King of his time and was granted immense wealth and power. This lineage persisted across different dynasties, many of which would hope to secure the allegiance of the Ximen family. Although the war hero who founded this clan will remain loyal to the royal family that gifted him so much land, that general isn't alive to object the ways of his descendants."

They arrived at the foot of a large statue that is dedicated to the founder. The figure is depicted riding on an ostrich-horse, the standard steed of Earth Kingdom militaries. Like many great figures who were immortalized, this man also holds a giant glaive. The mighty polearm is heavy and wielded by few individuals skillful enough to swing it properly, just having it displays a symbol of immense strength in hands of powerful Earthbenders. Which is why many timeless individuals wish to be remembered holding one.

Shan briefed her the history of this particular person. Despite the problematic reputation of this household in present, the scholar's critique of its first patriarch is rather positive. This renowned individual is known as Ximen Bao, a cunning man credited for bringing countless victories to Ba Sing Se. But the scholar also focused on the intellectual side that is not widely discussed. According to him, Ximen Bao is a rationalist. During that man's time, various parts of the Earth Kingdom experience various floodings. Rural Earth Sages would perform human sacrifices, one county is known for throwing young maidens into the river to appease a supposedly real deity known as Hebo. After resolving this inhumane practice and abolishing the local shamanism, Ximen Bao directed massive hydraulic engineering projects to mitigate river overflowing. The construction of many canals systems would then help the irrigation of farmlands.

But Shan emphasized that this prowess in intellect can also be applied to war. Ximen Bao's strategic thinking can alter the battlefield, in a very literal manner. His tactics of using Earthbenders to construct makeshift walls during a conflict can divide enemy armies, diverting their numbers away until their army becomes completely uncoordinated. According to Shan, the reigning Earth King during that era both fear and respect this military commander. To ensure this general does not revolt, many fiefdoms and privileges were given to the Ximen family. The right to collect tax revenue within their personal domains aim to solidify loyalty to the throne. However, this decision may have strengthened the clan's power in the event of a rebellion.

"I find him reasonable, and a statue built in his honor coincides with the merits." Shan said.

"But I see no food offerings around this place," Mayumi remarked. "Not even a small ceramic pot."

She pointed out the suspicious absence of any religious rituals dedicated to ancestor worship. Even the poorest people would at least provide some fruit or incense sticks to venerate this historical figure. Perhaps the image of Ximen Bao contrasts their present indulging behavior too much, that simply venerating be conflict greatly.

"The negligence of the Ximen family are their own. Considering their debauchery, I doubt they would care much about imitating their founder's more tolerable conduct. At the very least there are no mold growing within the cracks. Now, let's move on." He led her on the path once more. This time, they arrived at a much grandeur structure, a building which Mayumi almost mistaken for a great temple. It seems that just about any house in these lands can easily dwarf the biggest building back home.

The structure before them is built in the similar fashion of the Royal Palace, just in a smaller scale. A flight of rising stairs is already at an impressive height, which alone is already enough to tower every other residence of the Upper Ring.

The Fubing guards standing nearby wore what appears to be heavy plated armor fitted into a brigandine suit, even bulkier than the normal worn by the royal guards. The distinction is marked by the purple plum insignia painted on the helmets. The longer she looked at the symbol, the more Mayumi is unsettled by it.

"White Scholar," one of the heavily armored sentries called out, recognizing the iconic white robe donned by the Zhuangyuan. "The banquet has already begun. I suggest you ascend quickly up the stairs to the main hall. Our young master is already waiting."

Shan's stonelike face didn't even look at him. Mayumi controlled her walk to match the scholar's pace, realizing that he is slowing down slightly.

"We will take our time," the scholar said in a nonchalant manner. "Ximen Qing is not someone I know to be a man who is easily offended."

This statement is indeed true as the delinquent rarely reciprocates with rage, at least not from himself directly. The young heir clearly shows no respect for traditions or what is normally considered to be the conventional moral code. Being slightly late for this banquet will likely not be perceived too heavily. It is after all Ximen Qing's fault for inviting the White Scholar in such short notice.

They both climbed the flight of stairs, almost at the speed of the elderly. Shan is deliberately delaying his arrival at the banquet, perhaps suspecting that doing so may yield some benefit in the intricate of world of political intrigue.

"Takeko, I must warn you beforehand that Ximen Qing is a rather...eccentric scholar. While many of us are rightful to disdain his unruly behavior, it should be known that harming him with brute force may not be the wisest choice. The Zhang tribe have little to lose. But it would be more problematic for a scholar's retainer to injure a fellow learned man."

Mayumi reassured Shan. She is already aware of what might happen if her actions create discourse in the Upper Ring. The last thing that needs to happen would be a surprise 'visit' from a certain someone in darkish robe and conical helm, inquiring why she has conjured conflict with the most powerful house of the Upper Ring.

The Ximen family's position as the most prominent clan in Ba Sing Se is not a subject that is up to debate. With many of their associates forming a portion of the bureaucracy, creating conflict with them would be impulsive. Which is why someone like Shan, who is familiar with social intrigue, is better suited to combat whatever deceit that delinquent may be planning. Unlike the foolhardy courtesan named Jin Lian, Ximen Qing is a very talented scholar in his own right. Mayumi believe that Shan will be enough to handle the conversation while she herself will ensure the scholar's safety. With many factors considered, it is still prudent to bring alone a skilled bodyguard in case the Ximen clan does not play by the rules. Shan may be a respectable calligrapher, but he is completely defenseless if someone wishes to thrust a blade into his chest. While this situation is highly unlikely in an Upper Ring banquet, a foul play like this isn't an impossibility. Additionally, the antique clock gifted by Ximen Qing warranted Shan's concern.

"The Earth Kingdom in all its history has seen countless turmoil and strife, but there is also one pattern that we can recognize. Whenever a dynasty falls, it is a change of management. Farmers must plow their fields no matter who is in control of the state. So long as lowly servants continue to play the role and not lift up their heads, the new rulers will naturally not replace them." Shan then asked Mayumi a question as they are on the verge of completing the slow climb. "I want to hear from your perspective, Takeko. Why do you think the Ximen family has been able to survive so long? Not only have they weathered through countless change of imperial dynasties, but every time emerging even more prosperous."

Mayumi knows the real answer. It is clear that previous clan leaders of the Ximen family pledged new allegiances with an upcoming dynasty, a process that will repeat whenever the ruling power wanes. The cycle of a new royal family ascending to the throne of Ba Sing Se can be interpreted as an inevitable fact, and the Ximen will capitalize this opportunity by siding with whoever is likely to sit on the throne. Across history, there are many nobles who are either killed or lost significant power after a new monarch clawed to power. By choosing not to remain stubbornly loyal to one side or another, the Ximen clan ensured their wealth and power, striking at the right moment. The existence of their own army created by men living on their fief is a testament of this. Of course, it would be unwise to utter this out loud. She is 'Takeko', a mere peasant from the Lower Ring. Demonstrating this level of political understanding may dismantle the facade and reveal her true identity as the daughter of a village chief.

So, she feigned stupidity, hoping that the scholar would be tricked by this performance. "I'm... not exactly sure. But it is indeed weird that the Ximen family has been around longer than most of royalties are in charge." Mayumi is hinting the very obvious fact that this noble clan seems to have retained their power, overcoming the test of time as so many royal dynasties fell to the ashes. Shan approved her observation, asserting that the Ximen family's personal army can play a useful role in coups and uprisings.

"They are wealthy by having their own fiefs, but they are truly powerful by commanding the loyal men of the Fubing," he said. "The Ximen family could have taken the throne for themselves. But their forefathers are keenly aware of the consequences. Once you become an Earth Monarch, a life of a normal individual is no longer possible. Many will try to pull you down. When that is achieved, not even dignity remains. Why should they take that risk when supporting an eventually victorious side is much more preferable? With their own powerful army, the city must be careful on how the clan is treated."

"So, there is a concern that the Ximen family might change their allegiance?" Mayumi asked.

"Yes, especially since the constant warring outside the walls might reach this city." Shan confirmed her deductions. "But so far, there is no foreseeable threat that is powerful enough to overcome the grand bastions. History has shown that not even the likes of Chin the Conqueror can easily breakthrough the outer defenses. But what this city must keep at bay are those who may seize power using more...subtle means."

Their walk ended as they finally reached the top, facing the main entrance of the Ximen palace. But before entering, Shan led her to the side where another stone statue is here to be examined. It is a sculpture of a mythical lion turtle that appears to be carrying a pillar of carved inscriptions. Mayumi can understand the words but chose not to show it.

"Behold, the audacity of the Ximen family." Shan gazed at this statue with a critical eye, disdaining its implications. "I consider this statue as the physical manifestation of their debauchery. The Earth Monarch of that time was shortsighted and fearful for his reign. To ensure that the Ximen clan and its powerful Fubing will remain by his side, many privileges are granted to Ximen Bao that shall carry through to all his descendants. Whatever the crime may be, only treason can ever be punished."

"Yeah, but I doubt punishment is realistic when a dynasty is on the verge of being dethroned," Mayumi stated.

"Precisely," Shan said. "In exchange for their change of loyalty, the new ruler would promise the family that this oath will be upheld. Besides, the cost of violently eliminating the Ximen family will be so high that whoever succeeds doing so will lose too much power themselves, potentially leading to another dethronement."

In hindsight, having the Ximen clan as an ally is more incentivizing than trying to destroy them. The Fubing are not just glorified bodyguards for the household. Lower taxation easily secured their loyalty to General Sangui. In the event of a rebellion, these troops will gladly fight for the Ximen family rather than the city as a whole.

"If the crime is not treason, the Ximen family cannot be prosecuted without sparking a rebellion by the Fubing. But by the time they do show their true colors, it is already too late." Shan fanned himself.

They returned to the entrance and decided to finally head in. But the sound of laughter and suspicious sounds halted their steps. Smell of heavy wine permeated the air like a foul stench, polluting the serenity of the garden below. Comparing this to the beverage made by the Ganjinese, the latter is definitely a more appealing fragrance.

"I see that their indulgence has exceeded my expectations." Shan is obviously unimpressed by what is happening inside the main hall. While most people of the Upper Ring would shy away from indecent behaviors, Ximen Qing care neither for his reputation or the sanity of those around him. It seems that those associated with him can also contract the same debauchery.

A lone wine cup flew towards the scholar's face. Shan stood still as Mayumi pulled out the blade and smashed the porcelain. Undrinked wine spilled across the pavement, almost staining their robes. They both understand that this projectile was unintentional, as the gentleman who thrown it is too preoccupied with a servant girl that is suspiciously voluptuous. The woman is pouring wine, entertaining the guest with jokes and seductive phrases. It seems that Ximen Qing has prepared a rather unorthodox way to entertain for the invitees, fully understanding that there are many ways to entice even the most educated youth.

"Is this the Ximen clan palace or a brothel?" Mayumi narrowed her eyes, disgusted by this sight.

"Both," Shan answered plainly. "But I have seen worse."

She has no idea what he meant by worse. Shan stepped into the hall, followed by Mayumi trying her best not to show her grimace. All the other guests are young men simply too bewitched by the number of household servants bearing the symbol of the purple plum flower. This debauchery strictly contrasts the grandeur and orderly architecture that designed the space.

The leader of the delegation from earlier hurried into the room, announcing the White Scholar's arrival. Shan simply fanned himself in the process.

"The White Scholar?" A young recent graduate of the Keju exam was so distracted that he did not even notice their arrival. Just like every other guest in the hall, they soon gradually realized that the man who humiliated the Te clan is standing right before them, watching them enjoying being seduced by mere servants of the Ximen household.

"Oh, don't worry about him," the woman sitting on his lap lifted the man's face back to herself. But that sharp gaze from Shan diminished the young man's ability to further indulge.

There was a moment of awkward silence, a sense of embarrassment as they are all being looked down upon by the Zhuangyuan. The guests are rescued by the timely intervention of the host, Ximen Qing. At the other end of the hall is the man himself, the scholar who reached third place on this year's Keju. Sitting on his own set of table and chair, he welcomed this esteemed guest.

"What an honor it is to receive your presence, Shan." Ximen Qing said in a joyous mood. "I am flattered that you accepted my invitation." He arrived out of the seat and walked towards to them.

Shan fanned himself, subtly dispelling some foul stench in the atmosphere. "I heard that your family's fisheries are bearing fruits of success, congratulations."

Mayumi stood nearby as Shan initiated the obligatory pleasantries demanded by all members of the aristocracy. She knew his opinion of those born into power are not exactly the most favorable. When facing Ximen Qing, it is clear from her perspective that for the sake of maintaining an appearance of cordiality, feigning friendliness is a common tactic. In this instance, Shan must engage in at least some minor level of flattery. The Ximen clan is not a household that should be trifled with, at least not in an impulsive manner.

The dullness in Shan's voice is apparent to none of them except Mayumi. Ximen Qing smiled, trying to appear humble by the lackluster praise.

"To think I would be complimented by the Zhuangyuan himself, what a pleasant achievement!" He then briefly explained the context of today's celebration. The Ximen clan's private fishery has been very successful in its dealings with the United Republic, bringing in a new avenue of wealth. After passing the Keju exam, the head of the household delegated ownership to his son, a choice that has thankfully not resulted in financial losses. Recent developments in Republic City presents a new opportunity.

He then formally apologized the inconvenience caused by his significant other, or at least his current one. "I would also wish to extend a formal apology, Jin Lian has a tendency to not listen to me. I hope yours isn't that unpredictable."

Mayumi shot Ximen Qing with a sharp gaze, which the delinquent only smiled. If he is just a normal individual in the Lower Ring, one punch across the face would be a very entertaining result. In this intricate setting, only words are suitable in combating such behavior. Shan is not idle and riposted with his own legalistic reasonings.

"One should always fulfill their roles without overstepping bounds," he said. "But a state's ruler should also bear a responsibility for unruly subordinates."

This is a subtle sly against the host himself. Although Ximen Qing is certainly aware, he did not demonstrate offence. Instead, he chose to laugh it off, even agreeing with Shan.

The other young scholars watched quietly as the two of them conversed. Inevitably, Shan 'inquired' about all that is happening in the hall.

"It seems that late arrival has warranted my confusion."

Mayumi looked around, savoring the discomforting faces of the other guests. There are reasons to believe that Ximen Qing is trying to entice these impressionable scholars into serving the clan, and Shan is also one of the targets. Their deliberate delayed walk has denied the host of using peer pressure upon the White Scholar. Although Shan couldn't care less about this childish game, being late to the banquet is effective in embarrassing those who are enchanted by the household servants. The mere presence of the Zhuangyuan, the ideal image of an Earth Kingdom scholar, is enough to create a contrasting image with these gratifying guests. If Shan himself is not participating in this debauchery, then the rest of them will not have the boldness to continue.

The White Scholar snapped open his fan. "Don't worry, your secrets are all safe with me," he said to the other young men. "It is in the best interest of those who graduated from the Keju to remain dignified. We would not want the public to misunderstand, do we? But fear not, yours truly will not denigrate himself to slanders."

But he made no promises about 'Takeko', the swordswoman who also witnessed their indecency. She crossed her arms, making it very clear that rumors might easy spread around the Upper Ring. These new scholars who just graduated may have somewhat influential families backing them. But it would their clan's name that will be dishonored.

"You are absolutely correct, White Scholar!" One of the guests pushed a servant aside and sit normally on the seat. Others repeated his behavior, trying to mask their action as a simple and not too big of a mistake. Many of them bowed, putting their palm and fist together in a show of respect. Yet, Shan just ignored them, finding his own seat and table. They are unsure about this cold response and can only hope that the embarrassment does not permeate outside this palace.

"Well then, now that Shan is here, we can finally begin more seriously!" Ximen Qing returned to his own seat and table, a place situated on an elevated dais not to different from a throne room. He reinjected good spirit and enthusiasm into the hall, rising the festivity. "It is with great honor that my father, admiral Sangui, entrusted partial leadership of the fishery upon me. Recent successes in securing a trade route to Republic City has enriched our family's wealth. But what is the point of success if it cannot be shared, right?"

The guests murmured in agreement. Shan helped himself with some tea on the table as others showered Ximen Qing with praises. Every guest has their own set of table and chairs in similar fashion in a royal palace, even the furniture is lashed with what appears to be gold. There just so happens to be a kettle of tea placed on his spot, a deviation from the others.

"Of course, this success is not only the result of my own initiatives." Ximen Qing emphasized to everyone. "The valuable insights possessed by knowledgeable individuals are instrumental in managing this business. Although this is just a minor branch of the clan, I believe with more help, it can eventually reach greater heights. Our family is in need of talents who can facilitate this endeavor of mine. Business dealings between our household and Republic City needs cultured men to explore more avenue. Those who are interested will find incentives beyond your imagination."

Shan stopped himself from drinking the fresh tea. Both him and Mayumi recognized the petals within the cup as the famed White Dragon Bush. It is an exquisite flower that few can ever come across, naturally making it expensive even for many Upper Ring households. The sheer abundance of it floating inside the kettle is just another testament to the Ximen clan's immense wealth. Yet, the White Scholar does not give in to the temptation.

Ximen Qing then stood up, signaling the beginning of a great feast. He clapped his hands twice, starting the first course of the meal.

Mayumi's eyes glanced at the side entrances used by servants. Steaming plates of delectable food are gradually brought out and laid across each table. There is a theme applied to the cooking, and that is seafood. No expense was made on the ingredients as they are all heavily seasoned with rare spices.

She is shocked by what is on each plate. Even the most common meat bewildered all expectation. The color of a cooked fish fillet demonstrates that in its previous raw form, the flesh is much redder than most creatures caught in the wild. It is possible that the proximity with the North Pole presents many opportunities to find prime specimen. But the other seafood dishes also captivated her attention, especially by their sheer quantity. Rare ingredients such as large abalone and crab meat also found themselves here. One plate on Shan's table even has a cooked clam with its pearl still intact.

Mayumi took a second to process the cost of finding all of these rare ingredients. Not even the most seasoned fishermen in her village can easily find high value seafood at this quantity. They can find the occasional mussels that attached themselves to fishing boats, but even crabs that occasionally wonders the beaches can only be caught in little sizes. As for the abalone? Her people would be lucky if they even managed to find a small one. This particular ingredient is rare in their area. The simple folks on the island might even mistake the shell as some rare treasure, hoping to sell it to a merchant for a few coins.

Regardless, the raw demonstration of wealth is evident here. The ingredient of the dishes aims to subtly convey that the Ximen clan is both wealthy and successful in this fishery business. It also implies to the present guests that aligning themselves with this household can yield many benefits, and accessing rare food is one of the perks that will entice the impressionable men. She does not blame the others for being unable to resist the strong aroma from the ocean. Other scholars are enjoying every bit of this moment, as many of them have likely never seen the ocean that is just over the walls. Faced with the exotic meal, they are easily impressed by Ximen Qing's management of the fishery, finding solid backing his earlier claims.

She watched them trying not to act too indecent while indulging the prestigious seafood. Mayumi imagined that if Satchiko is here, the sheer amount of oceanic aroma would overwhelm the young Kyoshi Warrior. Their shared penchant for everything caught in the ocean is enough for her to believe that the younger sister would drool profoundly.

"Ahem," Shan quietly reminded. He noticed a tiny trail of saliva flowing from one side of Mayumi's mouth. It is quickly corrected by the swordswoman using one effortless rub.

As Ximen Qing espoused a speech she chose to ignore entirely, Mayumi realized that the White Scholar is likely repulsed by is on the table. Of course, he does not demonstrate this physically, masking a face of discomfort with the usual stoic demeanor. Shan's hatred for ingredients caught in the ocean is likely not within Ximen Qing's knowledge. Thus, this glamours display of exquisite dishes have turn the heir's supposedly good intentions into another thorn that Shan will remember. It is likely that the food is not prepared as a sly against the White Schoalr, as the host clearly intends to seek the loyalty of all the young talents within this room, including the newest Zhuangyuan. Perhaps this is just a case where the host's plan is foiled by his own ignorance.

"Very rare indeed," Shan said in a moderate tone. It allows Ximen Qing to hear his compliment of the banquet food, which is just another misdirection of the scholar's true self. While this delighted the host, Mayumi knew Shan would love to slander the cooking if the situation allows it. All the dishes rely heavily on the exquisite ingredients, and the act of preparing the food seems to be minimal, with only some simple boiling and frying. Heavy concentration of sauce is also applied. She expected that the cooks hired by the Ximen family would be more capable than this. Frankly, even the chefs that works at Grandma Jin's eatery demonstrates more mastery over the culinary arts. Accessing only common ingredients available to the Lower Ring, they have shown to exercise more complex maneuvers.

All the other young scholars dined contently, for a feast like this is worth more than some of their entire fortune. Enjoying such banquet is the host's method of hinting them that working for the Ximen clan is a worthy path, and fine food is certainly not out of the question. Even the most prominent households of the Upper Ring cannot regularly procure so much rare seafood, and the rare larger sized abalones is even more hard to obtain.

Shan eyed the plates on his table. Boiled crabs, steamed fish and great abalone steak dipped in sauce demands him to consume it. For the sake of public appearances, he has to eat without showing the normal disdain. It is true that Ximen Qing is not aware of the White Scholar's picky appetite, and likely and thought that using these unparalleled ingredients can impress the Zhuangyuan enough to consider serving the Ximen family.

The White Scholar picked up a pair of golden chopsticks, shoving one piece of abalone into his mouth. Unlike the others, Shan is slow and methodical, choosing not to devour everything outright. This natural disdain for seafood contrasts the other guests who are enjoying their share in a voracious manner. Mayumi winced slightly when the side of his face contracted, an even more painful expression when he consumed the ohaw soup. But so long as it fooled Ximen Qing, Shan's goal would be accomplished.

"Are you...ok?" Mayumi cannot help but whispered it. Shan simply waved it off, suppressing the urge to convulse. His stubbornness to continue is uncomfortable to watch. Luckily, most are not aware of this struggle.

A household servant arrived near his table. Mayumi previously spotted her talking with Ximen Qing on the dais, perhaps exchanging information. This voluptuous woman came with a porcelain container, obviously filled with fine wine.

"Young master Shan, care for some wine?" She spoked with a sweet tone, likely trying to entice the Zhuangyuan scholar into accepting a potent drink. Unlike normal occasions, Mayumi found that he did not display that cold glare whenever someone used this honorific term. It's likely that he wants to do everything to deceive Ximen Qing's perception.

"Yours truly will personally pour the wine. You may go. Send word to Ximen Qing that I enjoy the feast." Shan's reaction emits a face of neutrality, likely just another way to misdirect this court.

With reluctance, the servant put down the jar of wine and left. After preparing his own cup of brew, Shan used one of his sleeves to curtain the mouth while drinking. It is a proper manner used by nobles to hide the indecent appearance of drinking, a rather inconvenient practice which Mayumi has discovered.

The feast continued. Some of the invited scholars are impressed by the banquet's excessive food, even blatantly expressing interest in serving the Ximen clan. Whenever one of them did so, Mayumi can notice Shan narrowing his brows more.

"I hope you all have enjoyed the first course of the meal," Ximen Qing's statement shocked everyone. "The finest produce of our family isn't even on your table yet!"

Mayumi glanced at Shan. He is likely internally cursing at the thought of eating more seafood.

More exotic dishes are served. Plates of sea cucumbers and rare urchins, each emitting a stronger aroma that even the Kyoshi Warrior can't tolerate. The king of it all is the giant cauldron of soup, with large fins of sharks floating on the surface.

"Splendid," a small trace of Shan's callousness seeped through the cracks. But to maintain a somewhat cordial relationship with the Ximen family, he must reframe it as a compliment.

Mayumi averted her eyes as he tasted the food. Although she or Satchiko can easily eat the delicacies due to their diet, this is torture for a scholar that hates to consume anything caught from the ocean.

...

They made it through the banquet without any setbacks. Or to be more accurate, Shan is the one who successfully endured without vomiting in the hall. He requested that they both tour the back gardens of their massive estate, a beautiful serenity that can even challenge the undisputed beauty of the Royal Palace. Mayumi is not sure why he chose to spent time here instead of returning home. Shan already fulfilled the duty of a responsible guest and does not need to linger any longer. It just felt unnecessary to remain.

"Takeko, what do you think about their garden?" Shan suddenly asked.

Mayumi looked at all directions, this place is even more lavish than the ones at the front of the hall. The Ximen family has a notorious reputation, yet somehow, they managed to possess some of the finest gardens. Behind these palace walls are pristine lakes and sculptures that can compete with the ones owned by Earth Kings. Yet they never have the ambition to topple the monarchy and rule Ba Sing Se for themselves. Instead, their forefathers chose to benefit from the changing of powers whenever a current ruler diminishes in strength. With all the wealth accumulated across multiple dynasties, the prestigiousness of this palace is a testament to their cunning application of Neutral Jing. Which is why enjoying the sight of beauty all around felt erroneous and morally abhorrent.

"It's beautiful, but I find it hard to indulge in this serenity knowing that their affluence comes from betrayal," she said.

"I concur, but yours truly also believe that the one saving grace of the Ximen clan is that they do not occupy themselves here when faced with challenges that threatens their lineage. Unlike the incompetent Earth Kings of the past, previous heads of this clan did not retreat to a secluded place just to ignore the problems." They arrived at a field dedicated to trees that grows the symbol of the Ximen family, which are the purple plum flowers. According to Shan, every tree here symbolizes a former leader. Noticeably, there are many planted here. "I frown upon nepotism, especially those who justify it using family values and noble lineages. But it is commendable that the Ximen clan managed to outlive multiple royal dynasties and still become a potent force today. Whether if it's bureaucracy or a portion of the army, those loyal to this household will always has some footing."

Mayumi is concerned about Shan opening discussing about this topic. Surely, he is not that bold to the point of criticizing this clan when they are right inside their territory?

Regardless, coming here does reveal slightly more about the Ximen family's power. The existence of the Fubing troops meant they can always launch a rebellion. But such action is only exercised when a current ruler loses their power, and this clan would simply swear fealty to the new monarch in charge. The cost of eradicating the Ximen family perhaps outbalances the benefits. Unless the crime is treason, there is no justifiable way to destroy them when the ruler's position is strong and reinforced.

She sighed. The game of politics here is much more gruesome than her backwater village. Right inside the Ximen clan's expansive compound, they can even hear distant chanting of new Fubing soldiers, fresh men honing their skills vigorously by mastering Earthbending. After some deliberation from the man who studied political science from Ba Sing Se university, she learnt that the entire functioning of the Fubing militia system allows the Ximen clan to garner many soldiers from their fiefs. The vast majority of their ranks are filled with men from the Lower Ring and Agrarian Zone, all sons of military families. Every six family is expected to provide one man to serve in the Fubing. Considering Ba Sing Se's population, even a fraction of that number meant that this special army can easily muster thousands of soldiers. In times of peace, they support themselves with farming, and will be called upon to aid the Ximen clan in times of crisis. With lower taxation than other citizens, they will naturally demonstrate more loyalty to the lineage.

"I am rather concerned about Ximen Qing. As heir to this clan's seat of power, it would mean that a cunning man will eventually hold tremendous sway in this city's governance." Shan lamented. "He is hated. But to label him as a simpleminded troublemaker would be underestimating that vixen man. Everything he has done so far has strengthened this clan's power. Becoming third place on the Keju is one thing, but disrupting the union between Lady Qian Jin and Gong Zi should not be perceived as a mindless ploy motivated by lust. The failure to cement this marriage alliance meant a possible counterbalance to the Ximen family's presence in the bureaucracy is destroyed. Furthermore, we cannot ignore the blatant pouching of young talents who just graduated from the civil service examination. While no law forbids this form of arrangement, luring new scholars into the Ximen clan's service will diminish potential officials who will serve the state directly." One can even claim that this is borderline treason. But without proof of Ximen Qing's disloyalty towards the entire city, mindlessly provoking the Fubing army would not be wise.

"But surely most of those scholars back in the hall would not be tempted so easily," Mayumi said. "Why would anyone work for a fishery when they can occupy a respectable position in society?" To her, it is a great honor to serve the people. Her own father may be the chief, but this role in the village has zero economic incentive. Him and all the previous chiefs, along with the ones in every other village on the island receives nothing for their role. But the true reward is having the limited power to propose or facilitate whatever little things that will help the locals.

Shan fanned himself. She suspects that perhaps he is not sure how to explain the intricate nature of humans. Once again, the legalistic mindset took hold.

"Being respected might not be the most enticing offer when the alternative can feed their more craving desires. I have seen many members of the gentry preaching the virtues of purity and societal conducts. But wild beasts that dressed themselves to imitate the illusion of civilization will always conceal their hidden debauchery. You have seen what those young scholars are capable of. They are susceptible to wanton distractions, a road that will deviate them from true ambition in this city. Without order, they behave no different from uncontrollable animals."

Mayumi cannot ignore his denigrating view towards his fellow kind. Legalism espouses the inherit evil within humans, which proposes strict codes of law to regulate their natural tendencies.

She is conflicted. While she wishes to disagree with this sinister perception of human nature, it is hard to argue when the other guests openly display debaucherous behaviors before the White Scholar's arrival. All it took was a little bit of encouragement from Ximen Qing and they all felt comfortable enough to interact inapproachably with the female servants. The underlying instinct of the youth are exploited, as the scholars are rather juvenile and choose to distract themselves from serving the city's official institutions.

"Are they seriously going to serve the Ximen clan just because of those women?" Mayumi asked bluntly. She observed the interaction between the scholars and the suspiciously seductive 'servants'. From her perspective, temporary pointless pleasures are not worth giving up important positions in the government. But Shan then clarified that wealth is also an important factor. Scholars are always paid handsomely in most societies, as they provide literary services such as calligraphy and have the ability to pass on their literacy knowledge. But working as a scholar official alone is actually not the highest paying profession. Based on the virtues espoused by the original Grand Earth Sage, officials must serve the people's interests without greed or malice. Their yearly earnings are not even greater than common merchants, only the higher-ranking officials are wealthier. But as for the lower ranked scholars, their role in the government is minimal, and their earning from the state will correspond to that.

"The Ximen family's offer to ordinary Keju graduates is simply irresistible. The promise of greater wealth is sometimes all that is takes to shift a scholar's allegiance. Most ranks below the third place, Tanhua, cannot expect to be more affluent as their position in the bureaucracy is less valued. Likewise, the income will be lower than successful merchants." Shan explained that there is tremendous benefit for the less prominent graduates to work for a clan, especially if money comes to the question. Being the most powerful clan, the Ximen family can offer more prosperity, encouraging young scholars to work for them instead of the state directly.

It is clear that this delinquent is no ordinary opponent. The complex nature of Ba Sing Se aristocracy meant they cannot just assault him outright. Unlike rogue bandits and independent governors across the Earth Kingdom, the Ximen family is a powerful force with many measures that kept them in power. Ximen Qing himself is also a learned man. Despite his promiscuous nature, that didn't stop him from possessing a high degree of intellect that can navigate through the intricate Upper Ring's society.

The sound of a soothing zither can be heard from the other side of this wide lake. A slow and quiet tone, one that corresponds to the peaceful appearance of this garden.

At first, Mayumi was suspicious. One hand lingered around the sword's handle, ready to draw. They are still within palace grounds of the Ximen family, therefore endangering themselves. Shan's request to exit the banquet might have garnered Ximen Qing's attention. Despite her urging to immediately leave, the scholar insists that acts of foul play are highly unlikely, as the crime of harming a prominent scholar will be designated as treasonous to the state.

"A rather magnificent sound, don't you think?" Shan complimented this distant yet beautiful music. While she can appreciate the skillfulness of the one playing the zither, it is evident some notes are slightly misplaced, unfitting to the tone that is meant to be performed. Only with a clear mind can the sounds come out perfectly. But wrong notes will be produced if the individual is anxious.

Much to the frustration of the swordswoman hired to protect him, the scholar decided to stroll leisurely on the path that leads to the other side of the giant pond of water. They crossed over a stone bridge and arrived near an ornate pavilion, the area where the zither is believed to have been played.

"There is no one here, we should just leave." Mayumi watched as Shan walked underneath the pavilion, inspecting the empty zither that stood in the shade. It is a beautiful piece, an instrument with good quality strings and wood. As expected, there is a small purple plum symbol on the side, meaning that the owner must be a member of the Ximen family.

"I suspect that whoever invited us here has other intentions," Shan said in a vague manner.

They can hear commotion behind a dense group of trees. Near the bank of the pond. Mayumi quickly maneuvered around and discover few individuals becoming frantic over an object floating in the water. Shan eventually arrived too.

"Quick! Grab it before it gets too far away!" A noblewoman is gravely concerned. One hairpin is seen drifting further towards the center of the pond. Despite the best effort her two maids, they cannot reach the seemingly valuable item. None of them can swim.

Just as Mayumi wanted to step forward, Shan used his paper fan to block her path. This gesture reminds herself of when she used a metal fan to stop Satchiko's impulsiveness. Instinctively, it is a hint from the scholar that this situation is more than what the eyes can see.

"What seems to trouble you?" Shan asked the young noblewoman for the sake of courtesy. They can all see the drifting hairpin, but words from its owner might reveal new information.

The lady turned to them, introducing herself as Lin Daiyu. She greeted the esteemed scholar, who maintained his stoic expression despite the initial friendliness of the zither player.

"I accidentally dropped a precious belonging into the pond," she said in a slightly discomfiting expression.

Shan raised an eyebrow. He stood near the water and looked at the hairpin floating away from their reach. The pond isn't deep, it is transparent enough for them to see through the bottom.

This scene almost felt like a moment taken straight from historical literature. It fits surprisingly perfect, a story where a young assist a damsel in distress by retrieving a precious item.

Just as Mayumi thought Shan would personally swim across the water, he turned around.

"Takeko, I request that object to be retrieved."

"Eh?" The swordswoman's expectation is turned upside down. Even Lin Daiyu and the two maids attending the noblewoman are slightly stunned by the request. Perhaps everyone else also expected the scholar to drench his robe and secure this valuable hairpin.

At first, Mayumi wanted to cast him a confused look. For a man that preaches a philosophy that dictates individuals to never overstep their office, it's rather out of character for Shan to request this. It was expected that he would simply do it himself, just like the case of cleaning the damaged courtyard after Jin Lian's rude invasion.

"Ok," she replied simply, trying not to show her tiredness.

Mayumi dived into the shallow water, quickly swam to the hairpin and arrived back. It was more than easy. Although this action has drenched the dress, it is a slight inconvenience if she is required to draw sword. "Here, don't lose it next time." She presented the hairpin to Lady Lin Daiyu.

There was a slight hesitance in the noblewoman's hand. After finally accepted the hairpin, she thanked the swordswoman and bowed. "I appreciate your help." It was a modest and simple exchange. No elaborate or flowery words.

Through this, Mayumi understood that by delegating another person to retrieve this hairpin, Shan can avoid interacting with Lin Daiyu. She can feel that this is another deliberate and seemingly unnecessary act, one which only the cold scholar himself can fully understand. It is well known that legalistic scholars do tend to endorse misdirecting their subordinates to hide their true intentions. But this time, he is more elusive.

Lin Daiyu and the two other maids do appear slightly anxious. Shan then issued a retreat from the pond, heading back to the pavilion. While the swordswoman is trying to pick up any subtle meaning that might have missed, another sudden matter demands attention. She can sense someone, a lone individual standing underneath the pavilion. After emerging from the group of trees that hindered the view, they spotted Ximen Qing of all people.

Almost immediately, Shan initiated conversation. With the usual cold expression, he praised the carefully curated palace grounds, complimenting the variety of rare flora and the abundance of purple plum flowers. If it fooled the host, then this lackluster attempt with pleasantries is not too pointless.

"Delighted to witness you enjoying our family's pleasure garden," Ximen Qing said with chuckle. "Come, let us both share some tea in the sight of this pristine place."

It is a cue that they alone will participate in this. Perhaps the young Ximen wants to personally apologize to the incident in regard to Jin Lian's intrusion. If that is the case, then there is nothing to be worried about. But Shan have already suspected that the Ximen clan is interested in acquiring his allegiance, likely with incentives worth more than all the other scholars gathered in the banquet hall.

"Lin Daiyu, ensure that the guest's bodyguard can further enjoy our lovely garden, show her the utmost hospitality of our family," Ximen Qing ordered the noblewoman in a similar matter when addressing the other servants. Lin Daiyu bowed alone with the two other maids.

After a quick reassurance from Shan, Mayumi is relinquished of responsibility in this moment. It is a hint that her martial skills are not needed in an intellectual engagement between two scholars. Swords are not needed since the Ximen family would not commit treason by harming a Keju graduate.

"Please, let us vacate this place." At the invitation of Lin Daiyu, who now holds her zither with both arms, Mayumi finally obliged.

With other people as witnesses, whatever misfortune befalls on Shan during the following duration would not be her fault. As the two men sat underneath the chairs of the pavilion, she is guided further away, finally understanding there is a possibility that Ximen Qing have orchestrated this to privately discuss with the White Scholar. Their conversation is not even allowed to be heard by others.

"By the way, who are you?" Mayumi suddenly asked. She began by introducing herself with the false name, Takeko. "I know your name. Forgive me if this question does not fit your taste, but are you associated with Ximen Qing?"

Lin Daiyu held her instrument protectively, both arms covering the strings. "I am just a cousin."

Sensing there is unease, Mayumi remained quiet for the remainder of their walk. Followed by two attendants, the four of them arrived back at the stone bridge leading to the other side.

"So... how did the White Scholar find my music?" Lin Daiyu suddenly asked. The question caught the swordswoman off guard. But there is slight anxiety in the noblewoman which did not went unnoticed. Unlike the intelligent Lady Te Gaogui or the arrogant Jin Lian, the present noblewoman seems to have a difficult time talking. Even the act of socializing seems to be almost foreign.

"He...finds it splendid," Mayumi chose her words carefully. "We very enjoyed the music. It would be great if we can hear more." Mayumi tried to make the conversation more sociable, all to no avail.

After some minor and brief exchange, she learnt that this noblewoman manages the Ximen palace backyard gardens. But this detail may signify that Lin Daiyu might be from a lower ranked position of this clan. While every part of the gardens is splendid and perfectly maintained, this specific role is often reserved for less important members of a noble family. It is known that the Ximen clan have many officials who are relatives. But Mayumi never thought she would discover one who is only tasked with only taking care of plants and trees.

"We are first cousins," Lin Daiyu clarified her relations with the heir of the family, Ximen Qing.

"First?" Mayumi did not dare to ask more. Although it was hard to decipher, she can't help but notice this noblewoman seems to be slightly older than the current heir. But why is her name different? Most Earth Kingdom naming conventions dictates that the family name of the children must follow that of the father. Perhaps the parent with Ximen blood is Lin Daiyu's mother, which may explain why the name 'Ximen' is not used. "I didn't see you at the Keju ceremony, are you always just in here caring for the flowers?"

Lin Daiyu nodded gently. Mayumi's simple question can cater those who is afraid of talk. It has proven difficult to fully communicate with this noblewoman. From what she can gather, this first cousin of Ximen Qing seems to have never left the clan palace before, not even to attend Ximen Qing's Keju inauguration. Like a bird closed in cage, Lin Daiyu has been assigned to maintain the gardens within palace walls indefinitely. Although everything in here is beautiful and breathtaking, it is not hard to uncover the woman's lack of excitement.

"I do enjoy playing the zither in the middle of all this," Lin Daiyu lowered her guard slightly. She remarked that the sound of music can perfectly harmonize with the environment, a topic that Mayumi actually enjoys. Since Akahana has performed the role of florist before serving as matron, the topic of caring for flowers is a hobby topic.

"The flowers need fine soil and water to survive. But music can give them all meaning, something more than just plain existence for the sake being beautiful objects to be looked at." The noblewoman produced a very tiny smile, looking at the zither with content. This statement was brief and short, simple yet meaningful. A message that most can endorse.

They talked a bit more on the stone bridge. The two maids looked at each other as their lady conversed more than what she usually does. Yet they have forgotten that this is Ximen clan's territory, a place where unsightliness personality can be normally found.

"Fancy to see you here!"

Mayumi rubbed her eyebrows in slight irritation. Even the timid Lin Daiyu narrowed her gaze. The two nearby maids bowed low as a small contingent of people arrived at the stone bridge.

At its head, dressed in a purple silk dress, is none other than the woman who is considered to be Ximen Qing's 'beloved'. Under her lead, a dozen of maids serves as personal attendants.

"Lady Jin Lian," Lin Daiyu bowed.

Mayumi is unsure how to react. Navigating through the world of aristocratic intrigue is something outside her grasp. It would be feasible to imitate the subtleness of Upper Ring nobles, their high societal conduct and beliefs would take years to master. Like a warrior assigned to the role of a gardener, all attempts to fit in would only result in failures. Usually, it is Shan's impeccable eloquence that can handle the nobles. Which is why applying brute force would be deemed uncultured.

In accordance with the universal custom of host and guest, Mayumi tried to greet Jin Lian. Seconds after lowering her head, a palm sped pass the cheeks.

Slap!

The swordswoman recoiled, not harmed but rather in shock. Lin Daiyu and the two maids also widened their eyes in surprise, their reaction meant that this situation is not expected. Jin Lian smiled after retrieving her hand, caring little that initiating violence is indecent with the conceived idea of gentry virtues.

"Lady Jin Lian, she is a guest," Lin Daiyu reminded. But it fell on deaf ears. It seems that most people at least expected that Jin Lian would follow the Upper Ring's unwritten rules.

"Quiet Lin Daiyu!" Jin Lian demeaned without even using the appropriate honorific. "You should think twice before voicing any objection. The honor of the Ximen family depends more on those willing to defend it. Know your place."

The two maids from before are also too afraid to defend their supervisor. As Jin Lian continues to belittle Lin Daiyu, Mayumi tried to process the dynamic between them. Although former is considered to be the likely head lady in future, she is still an outsider. It is rather strange how the niece the current clan leader is being looked down upon by someone who does have a drop of blood from this family.

"Alright, what is it that you want?" Mayumi demanded.

Jin Lian displayed a smug expression. "Your previous audacity have not been answered for. While that Shan was a fool by not immediately accept the offer from my beloved, it is only soon that he will regret that past mistake. When I arrived at his home and proclaim a once in a lifetime opportunity, he repaid my generosity with nothing but contempt!" She then pointed at Mayumi, glaring with vengeance. "As for you, think twice before using unwomanly ways on household guests!" The noblewoman raised one of her hands and tried to slap the swordswoman again. "Once Shan inevitably sides with the Ximen family, you will naturally answer to none other than me." She swung her backhand, aiming at the side of the face.

A firm arm blocked that attempt. Even Mayumi herself was surprised by how easy it was. Since Jin Lian is a noblewoman, the force in that strike was never strong anyway.

"And what makes you think that Shan would actually pledge loyalty to the Ximen clan?" Mayumi challenged this assumption. Although the Ximen family has offered many incentives for scholars to join their ranks, someone like Shan obviously needs more than flowery words or lavish gifts.

From what was gathered while working for him, the White Scholar cares little for material wealth. Noble families offering their daughter's hand in marriage are all replied with silence. All of these petty games by Upper Ring households are perceived as deceitful ploys. That legalist disdains the deeply enrooted patrimonialism and will obviously not wish to be ensnarled by meddling family lineages.

Remembering what Takeko did to her bodyguards during their last encounter, Jin Lian retracted her hand. The slightly armored shoulder of Mayumi's outfit can be used as a deterrent. But the sword must be kept hidden from plain sight.

"You there!" Jin Lian ordered one of her own maids, the younger girl is immediately intimidated. "What are you waiting for?"

It is implied that Jin Lian demands one of her attendants to 'hit' Takeko. A ludicrous idea since it is well known that the brown-haired woman managed to defeat a bunch of guards of the Ximen family unarmed.

"M-my lady...this isn't my job," the maid pleaded.

"Then do you want to lose it?" Jin Lian stared darkly.

This is a clear threat to the maid's livelihood. Mayumi is not sure what to do in this situation without further inflaming the tension.

"This is between us two, don't involve others into it," she said firmly.

They clearly sensed that Mayumi possesses considerable martial prowess. Since they are within the Ximen clan's territory, no Fubing guards were assigned to the arrogant noblewoman on their home ground. The idea of even enacting additional violence upon Shan's retainer is unrealistic. However, that does not mean Jin Lian would not consider more indirect means.

"Fetch me water," she said bluntly. One of her maids returned with a filled bucket. In one swift motion, Jin Lian threw it towards Mayumi.

Lin Daiyu raised her arm to protect the zither from collateral damage. Thankfully, Mayumi simply kicked the container back to the river itself, much to the infuriation of the assailant. Although the thought of punishing Jin Lian for her rudeness is a tempting one, there are far greater repercussions as the Ximen clan may interpret it as an attack.

Jin Lian's sudden appearance here will inevitably escalate tensions. The host may be rude, but the guest that casts the first stone will not be seen in favorable lens either. Mayumi isn't quite sure if this seductress arrived due to the desire of petty revenge or as one part of Ximen Qing's amalgamation. If Shan's retainer incited an unprovoked attack upon a member of the Ximen family, it can be used to tarnish the White Scholar's reputation since he and Mayumi are guests to the palace. The change of location brings entire new contexts, and the excuse of self-defense may not be convincing like last time.

"Quick, get me another bucket!" Jin Lian hastily ordered.

Mayumi raised her fist at Jin Lian, hoping that feign intimidation can ward off more childish ploys. She reminds herself that a disturbance right inside the Ximen palace will echo throughout the circles of aristocracy.

Lin Daiyu stepped in, hoping to cease this pointless bickering. Just when Mayumi thought that the genuine advice from a Ximen clan member of full blood can calm down the rageful seductress, Jin Lian poured water over Lin Daiyu's hair, soaking it along with the zither.

"My lady!" one of two maids rushed to her aide. Mayumi retracted her defensive stance.

Jin Lian's attention shifted to Lin Daiyu, believing the interference stands against the Ximen clan.

"Hmph! You garden wench! Don't you know that siding with the people who looks down on your family is an intolerable transgression?" Jin Lian warned intensely.

A young maid brought forth a small handkerchief for Lin Daiyu to wipe the water off the forehead. This nameless servant then stood up again, demanding Jin Lian to apologize.

"Such boldness from you," Jin Lian then abruptly slapped the retainer in question. But unlike the move initiated upon Takeko, the long nails of the noblewoman managed to scratch her victim's face. Since it is just a lowly servant that got injured, no powerful family would protect her.

"Xiao Mei!" Lin Daiyu worried. She placed a hand over her assistant's face, ensuring no blood have been spilled.

Mayumi watched carefully, understanding that even citizens of the affluent Upper Ring can also be mistreated. Harming another individual's retainer is an indirect way of attacking a fellow member of the gentry. It not only avoids a fallout with another influential clan, but the instigator would also not be liable for assaulting a noble.

Here, it seems that Jin Lian holds great power over a blood relative of the current clan leader. Despite being a cousin of Ximen Qing, Mayumi thought Lin Daiyu would at least have a considerable social standing within the most prominent Ba Sing Se household.

The discriminatory attitude demonstrated by the arrogant seductress may imply that she is confident enough that no consequence would derive from this. It's possible that Lin Daiyu's predicament is intentionally designed, confined behind these palace walls and denigrated to a position of unimportance within the Ximen family.

...

The walk back to the siheyuan is dominated mostly by silence. Except for a few remarks about Ximen Qing's degeneracy and how it could corrupt others, both the scholar and swordswoman said nothing more. Shan is silent about his private conversation with the heir of the Ximen clan. Mayumi can only speculate. Judging by Shan's meritocratic beliefs, he likely views the present Ximen family with utter disgust, and Ximen Qing being the pinnacle of this disdain.

"I am slightly impressed," Shan said out of the blue.

Mayumi is following behind him, wondering what the scholar truly meant.

"As someone from meagre background, you managed to successfully soil discourse within their ranks."

She grew wary about his cynical nature. Perhaps he is applauding her for not tarnishing his own reputation by directly attacking Jin Lian. But celebrating Lin Daiyu's predicament isn't something she can't do.

"I know this may be beyond my role, but mind I ask what you and Ximen Qing discussed?" Mayumi believe it is important to understand even the smallest amount of their conversation. Shan is a Zhuangyuan scholar who is eligible for high-ranking positions within the city's bureaucracy, which makes securing his favors a great competition between Upper Ring households. With the deeply entrenched patrimonialism within Earth Kingdom culture, it is obvious that the Ximen clan would greatly benefit from a high ranking official. Which is why there is a clear line of secrecy that she is trying to cross, even asking this question is a great risk.

There was a small duration of silence from the scholar. But he ultimately did divulge some of what they conversed in private.

"He offered me power," Shan said vaguely. "A place to stand and look down at everyone else."

Mayumi appear confused by that statement. Such uninteresting and basic offer has no substance. Did Ximen Qing thought Shan was obtuse?

But perhaps there is more that the scholar is not revealing. It is likely that Ximen Qing tried to entice Shan by appealing to one of the lowliest instinct of humans, which is a futile endeavor.

Both she and Shan understands the intricate nature of the zither. If the White Scholar is an expert too, then he may have likely seen through a potentially designed situation, and Lin Daiyu is just an unwilling pawn of Ximen Qing. Shan's cold reception from before is a good indication that he wasn't amused. The music played by Lin Daiyu emits subtle unease, anxiety and even fear.

"Unlike all the other scholars present in his court, yours truly have no intention of swearing allegiance to the Ximen family." Shan emphasized that no amount of gold or women is enough to sway him. It is clear that Ximen Qing is using both of these as irresistible enticements, which successfully recruited many young talents to serve his clan. The delinquent is preparing himself for the eventual succession to head of Ba Sing Se's most influential household. But no matter how much scholars are lured into the Ximen family's grasp, the ultimate prize would be a Zhuangyuan. "Wealth? Lust? I am do consider it an offense that Ximen Qing thought they can replace my ambition. At least he isn't arrogant enough to use a mere harlot on yours truly. Perhaps I am considered important enough to use one of his distant relatives to cloud my judgement. Pathetic, nonetheless.

"You mean...he tried to sacrifice his own cousin?" Mayumi finally asked that very uncomfortable question. That noblewoman named Lin Daiyu likely has no choice in this matter. If Ximen Qing truly wished to give away his own relative for the sake of intrigue, then this once again highlighted Ximen Qing's devious nature of using people's lowliest instincts to his advantage.

"Cousin?" Shan stopped, looking at Mayumi with unchanging stoic face. He appears pondering, processing this new piece of information. "There are many members of the Ximen clan who serve in the bureaucracy, but all are distant relatives, in-laws and extended families. None of them are eligible to be the next head of household." He seems to be occupied by the thought that Lin Daiyu might have once been a claimant of their leadership, or more specifically, her parents were.

"I don't suppose the current clan leader has any living siblings?" Mayumi asked.

Shan snapped open his fan to contemplate, it seems that he is also clueless just like her. Up to this point, the White Scholar did not mention anything about the details of Ximen clan's line of succession. Just like most patrilineal groups, the oldest son of the patriarch will be the first in line for inheritance. But it seems suspicious that not a single word was spoken about any surviving siblings of the current leader, who is Admiral Sangui.

"The nature of the Ximen family can often be obscured, many times intentionally. Not even past Earth Kings would dare to send spies into their compound in fear that the discovery of this act will incite the clan's rebellion." Shan stressed that the power of the Ximen family meant not even the monarchy would try to overbear. The Fubing army may not have been frequent fighters in the front line, but the cost of eliminating every single one of them completely outweighs the benefits. The lack of transparency within the clan's main family unit meant that the heir would often be revealed in in their adolescence.

"Lin Daiyu does appear older, it would be preferable if she is the next leader of the Ximen clan," Mayumi said.

"The same applies to anyone else, even a child," Shan lampooned Ximen Qing's disgusting tendencies. "But I think you already know why she isn't the heir despite her potential seniority. After all, all traditions embraced by the nepotists are vomitous to yours truly."

Mayumi believe that the White Scholar is referring to Lin Daiyu's womanhood. A tyrannical and legalistic philosophy dictates that the merit of the individual should triumph above birthright. Ximen Qing's pervasive behavior and disruption of the social harmony makes his cousin the saner individual to work with. But once again, certain traditional values unfortunately stand in the way. The patrimonialism of the Ximen family meant that even if Lin Daiyu would serve as a better clan leader, the position would still automatically skip over to a male heir.

Shan then sighed. "We will discuss this in a later time." They resumed their walk. While other nobles sat comfortably in their carriages, they only continued on the footpath to traverse across half of Upper Ring. The location of the Ximen palace is directly on the opposite side of Shan's home, meaning along the way they can pass by the Royal Palace entrance, which they did stop to marvel at its grandeur.

Shan stood in the middle of the open courtyard, facing the gate of the gigantic outers walls that circles the Royal Palace. Mayumi stood by as the wind gently brushed against their skin. The scholar devoted all his attention to the opened doors, peering to the distant stairs that will climb to the chamber where all the previous Earth Kings have reigned over the continent.

"Do you understand why yours truly refused Ximen Qing's offer?" Shan suddenly asked her while perhaps making some contemplation himself. "Why would a man like me turn down a life of opulence where all my needs are fulfilled. As a Zhuangyuan, I can easily live a life of immense luxury by serving Ba Sing Se's most powerful clan."

"I don't think it is my place to answer," Mayumi perfectly masked her lack of understanding. Shan is not the type of person who craves wealth, as being a government official is less lucrative than serving the Ximen clan. Something else must have motivated this young calligrapher to reject Ximen Qing's generous terms.

"Then I will answer it for you," Shan began. "Other lesser scholars, many of whom came from merchant families and less affluent clans of the Upper Ring will view the Ximen family as their greatest benefactor. It is not easy to be part of Ba Sing Se's enormous administration, especially without powerful backing from influential members of the Upper Ring. Ximen Qing appeals to the lack of sensibility that have plagued many lesser graduates of the Keju, depriving the state from potential new officials. Why tire oneself in the matter of the state when a scholar can serve the Ximen family and live in excessive luxury? Yet, yours truly only felt serving the Ximen clan are nothing but iron shackles to what I truly wish to attain."

Shan then looked at the distant Royal Palace that lies beyond the wall entrance. At this point, Mayumi asked him on what he truly wants to accomplish. "You are a Zhuangyuan, the highest attainable rank in the world of education within Earth Kingdom. What else can ever want? Are you satisfied with everything you have accumulated?"

Shan at first met her with only silence. He then saw the golden rooftiles that covered the palace. That building which serve as the symbol of the sovereign for countless generations, a testament to the whichever reigning leader that oversees this massive continent. He sighed again.

"The Ximen clan is not big enough to house my ambition," Shan admitted. "I intend to reach the top, the very top of this hierarchy."

Mayumi glanced at where he is looking at. She wondered what he exactly means by that statement. To her own uninformed understanding, it is rather strange how the Earth King was not present during the previous Keju graduation ceremony. It is believed that scholars who attain powerful positions within the city's bureaucracy cannot become monarchs themselves.

They resumed their walk. But instead of arriving back at the scholar's courtyard house, their journey halted at a plaza, specifically in front of a shop. Comparing it to the other ones, this establishment is rather humble in appearance. Without fine architecture, the scholar chose this one out of all the affluent buildings of Upper Ring.

The banner of the store wrote 清真面馆. Upon entering, a pleasant fragrance greeted them. Mayumi can smell the soup and meat being cooked. At the front counter, a man with distinctive facial features can be seen preparing long white dough.

"Ma Baozi, two bowls of lamian," Shan said without even looking at the menu.

"What meat?" the shop owner asked.

The scholar stated that he will have his usuals, and Mayumi never heard what animal is used for the soup.

As they both found a small empty table in the surprisingly crowded space, the man named Ma Baozi collected a lump of dough and repeatedly stretched it. The clump is then twisted, pulled delicately by waving the arms and body. He coordinated his torso, looping the double long strands of dough, banging it on the table. After applying some flour dusting, more pulling occurred. The end result are countless strands of thin dough tossed into cooking pots of water. The chef then prepared two bowls of clear broth, each with pieces of meat in it. Afterwards, he placed the cooked strands of dough into the broth and served it to the two guests.

"I appreciate your craft," Shan thanked the chef and then proceeded to help himmself with chopsticks and a spoon. But before he eats, the sight of Mayumi staring at the food warranted his attention.

"What is this?" she asked. "It's soup, but with dough in it."

Shan was at first unsure how to react to this behavior. "It's soup noodle," he said bluntly.

"Soup noodle?" Such concept is foreign to her. Mayumi has just gotten into how to use wheat as part of the ingredient, learning many ways by working for Jin. But the idea of putting noodle in soup is never seen before sight since growing up. After some quick taste, she found a sense of comfort. This dish doesn't have any expensive ingredients, yet it felt so much more enjoyable than Ximen Qing's banquet. The clear broth is just soothing, and the meat is beyond succulent.

According to Shan, the shop keeper's distinctive facial feature has traces of the people living near the Si Wong dessert. His ancestors arrived at Ba Sing Se as traders and have since settled down. But what surprised her is that this relatively small building filled with customers to the brim. It's rather convenient that they just so happened to walk in without a long line of people outside.

"Shan, when we arrived back to your estate, may I take some time off to handle some private matters?" Mayumi feared that one of Jin Lian's maid might have been fired as a result the earlier scuffle. Perhaps paying a small visit to Lady Te Gaogui might yield a new opportunity.

"Certainly," he said while eating the noodles in a slow and methodical manner.

End of chapter notes:

-Just a minor clarification. Any characters with the same surname do not automatically mean they are related. The maid named Xiao Mei has zero connection to Xiao Qing who works in Jin's eatery.

-The soup noodle at the end of the chapter is heavily inspired from the Beijing variant of the famous Lan Zhou Beef Noodle, which uses flour dusting. This is dish is created by the Hui people during the Tang dynasty.
