Four days. It'd been four days and Ellie was still holding on. Jamie and Eddie took turns holding her. They each took breaks one at a time for the bathroom and meals. But pretty much they spent most of their time with Ellie. Eddie's face became ashen pale and looked down at the baby in her arms. Her eyes snapped up to Jamie next to her in the other rocking chair.
"Jamie? She's not breathing."
Jamie looked at the monitors and then back to Ellie.
"She's completely relaxed. Just give her a second. There we go. Babies tend to relax and it's perfectly normal. A lot of times its only a second or two."
Eddie's nerves were already frayed as it was. But Jamie was trying to reassure her.
"I'm sorry. I know I'm probably overreacting."
As Jamie was about to answer her, he saw Doctor Canton enter the room. A smile was on his face.
"I have some good news. About 10 minutes ago, we got news that a heart came in for Ellie. So the nurses are going to take her up and get her set up for the surgery. There is a waiting room up on the surgical floor that you can have a seat in."
Eddie's eyes lit up as the nurse took Ellie from her arms. Jamie pulled her into his arms. He kissed her forehead then turned to Doctor Canton.
"Thanks doc. How long is the surgery going to be for?"
Doctor Canton gave a confident smile, nodding.
"Between 4 and 6 hours. I'll have one of the nurses come and update you throughout the surgery so you know she's doing ok."
Eddie smiled and nodded her head.
"Can we get a minute with her before you take her up?"
Doctor Canton nodded his head and let the couple have a few minutes with Ellie. Eddie was the first to speak.
"Ok sweetie. Looks like you are getting you're new heart. Daddy and I will be with you when you wake up. I love you."
Kissing her forehead, she moved so Jamie could move in and speak to her.
"Hi baby girl. You are going to be ok now. Daddy is so happy for you. When you wake up, you are going to have a new heart and things are going to be just fine. I love you sweetheart."
Ellie gave Jamie and Eddie a smile. Jamie took it as a good luck sign. Eddie put a hand on Jamie's forearm as her phone pinged with a notification.
"Oh my god. Jamie. The paperwork went through. We got approved. Ellie is officially a Reagan."
Leaving the room hand in hand, they saw a woman standing at the nurses station. Erica must have gotten permission to wait a few more minutes before taking Ellie up. Ellie was in the woman's arms.
"Mr. and Mrs. Reagan? Hi. My name is Angela Carson with CPS. I'm the one who reviewed and processed your paperwork to adopt Ellie. It's with great pleasure with the State of New York and New York City that I congratulate you two. Ellie is officially family. Congratulations you two. It's a girl."
A picture was taken with both Eddie and Jamie with Ellie. As Ellie was being whisked away to the surgical floor, Angela smiled.
"I'll have this photo sent to your numbers and we'll mail you a hard copy for her baby book."
Jamie shook hands with Angela and took Eddie's hand, kissing her while walking down the hall. As they got to the surgical floor Eddie raised a question to Jamie.
"So, how does it feel babe? To know that Ellie is ours? Congratulations daddy."
Jamie smiled and ran an index finger over his right ear.
"It feels surreal. You know, down the road, she'll need a sister to play with."
Eddie looked up at him and nearly snorted as the two took a seat in a pair of chairs in the waiting room. They were much more comfortable than the one's downstairs.
"Ok. I'll get right on that. As soon as we've had at least a year of taking care of her under our belt Jameson Reagan."
