Warning: Disturbing themes ahead

"I cannot see why you suddenly ordered me out within such short notice," Mayumi begrudgingly asked the embroidered uniform guard. It is also raining heavily, making this little trip even more unpleasant. The inquisitor, or the Khu Li as some would call him, made an unexpected visit to the courtyard as the sun finally set. Just moments before, Shan decided to lock himself in the northern chamber, claiming that some 'important calligraphies' needs to be completed. He demanded absolutely no interruptions, a silent act that further expresses his disapproval. The scholar is convinced that she has secretly convened with Te Gaogui, which further intensifies the paranoia. It is obvious there is no intention for any more interactions, which is a good opportunity for a certain individual to show up uninvited.

"Don't you want to learn more about handling the seditionist?" the Dai Li asked. "I thought you would be grateful for this ample learning opportu-"

"Save it," Mayumi interjected, slightly annoyed by his voice.

Despite most of the upper body remaining concealed by the black veil flowing from the straw hat, the unfriendliness can easily pierce the flimsy fabric. Although she does not trust this man or his intention, being shown how the Acolytes of San Bao can infiltrate society can be a valuable learning experience. Should this morally repulsing faith once again attempt to subjugate her people, then taking a few pages out of the Dai Li's playbook is a pragmatic move.

She is a warrior, a very accomplished one. Fighting cultists in melee isn't the greatest concern. While the blade can maim the flesh, the cult's true danger not only lies in the expendability of individual followers. The most pervasive tactic of this belief is its potency to spread through a society, corrupting the spirituality of those they wish to convert.

The Kyoshi Warriors would gladly attack those who wish to threaten their family and friends. But despite their unparalleled skills honed by training since childhood, not even the finest amongst them were prepared to turn their weapons against the same people they are meant to protect. Her mother must unfortunately resolve this dilemma in the most horrifying way. Akahana is a strict and demanding person, but also a peerless fighter amongst the older generation. Should there be those who have committed the most heinous acts, the matron would be the one to perform the role of executioner.

But the content of Huo's diary revealed more history behind this seemingly fearless warrior. Based on the entries, some of the villagers were enticed by the message of the travelling acolyte, accepting the authority of this 'Master' figure by their volition. It is also written that Akahana have killed those converts, an act which even terrified the one who documented this account. To Mayumi, this unfortunate information shed some light on the early encounters with this new faith that tried to win over her people. Unfamiliar with the problematic presence of the acolyte, the islanders of that time were unable to respond in a timely manner. The key point lies in the conversion of a small number of locals, many of which are young Kyoshi Warrior trainees who are accustomed to combat. If those people suddenly turned against their own kin, how will the other warriors respond to this completely unexpected malice?

No matter how many times Mayumi read that heart wrenching entry, it is still difficult to believe that some of the younger Kyoshi Warriors abandoned their duty to protect the people. They convinced themselves to kill the elders and senior village members, something just felt so unbelievable.

One does not simply draw blade on their own family and friends. It seems that the younger Akahana was forced to abandon that tenet when the trainees are willing to stain their hands with the blood of village elders.

"Human trust is such a fickle thing, that scholar certainly did not enjoy your little gesture of kindness," the Dai Li said. "I wonder how you people handle traitors."

"I see that word has spread fast," Mayumi retorted. "Were you assigned to spy on Shan?"

She directly asked the man, expressing a long-held suspicion. Considering that both Shan and Te Gaogui mentioned the political importance of the marriage alliance, this issue will definitely affect Ba Sing Se's relations with the land of Zigan. As a Dai Li, especially a high-ranking member, this man will naturally be aware of the recent developments. It seems that almost nothing can evade their eyes, not even Shan, who is equipped with a sharp tongue that can be used to eviscerate others in a duel of words. It is not impossible to believe that this particular Dai Li was sent to secretly gather information on the meeting between Han Fei and Te Laoye. Furthermore, it would also be reasonable to suspect that he was tasked to monitor the White Scholar as a whole.

"I wouldn't be so casual with the speech, Kyoshi Warrior," the Dai Li warned while avoiding the question entirely. "But I can guarantee that those who wish to endanger the secrets of the state will not meet a pleasant end. If the situation demands it, silencing a mouth by removing the head from the body is something I can do."

She glared intensely. Even with a veil as cover, the anger is hard to mask. Yet the Dai Li paid no heed to this indignation.

"It is rare for me to be generous enough to bring an utter hinderance to the field, I hope you can cherish my temporary sagacious behavior" he further demeaned in the commonly used voice of a gentleman. "The least you can do is remain quiet and observe."

This is in accordance with their previous 'agreement', which allows her to further understand the Acolytes of San Bao and how their intrusion into a society can be countered. She wonders how a religious cult can be fought when a city like Ba Sing Se has a sprawling district known as the Lower Ring, so dense and populated. These men are not to be trusted, but learning a bit of their tactics can be beneficial.

"I do wonder how we are perceived by your kin," the Dai Li said as they walked through some narrow passageway between buildings. Their long stroll through the city meant they must say something to lessen the boredom. even if it is not what Mayumi would want. "Obviously we are not remembered fondly."

"As you all deserve," Mayumi said harshly. "Those that brought shame to Kyoshi's name lacks virtue and honor. People like you are unworthy to even mention her name."

He smirked, almost intentionally trying to annoy her.

"You think I would care about being worthy of offering incense to an Avatar?" The Dai Li shattered her expectation, making it clear that using Kyoshi's name cannot exert any mental pressure. "The way you talk reminds me of those sanctimonious Earth Sages, preaching the values of virtue and loyalty to their lord. Yet, these same sages are allowing such ideals to blind their own judgement. How many times in history have those so-called sagacious ministers and officials been killed for foolish outspokenness? It is arrogance I say. Their virtues amount to nothing if they allow themselves to be weak before the oppressors?" He then switched to the original topic, one which will challenge her own values.

The Dai Li inquired what a Kyoshi Warrior would do if they discovered that one of their own has committed unforgivable treason. It is a frightening question. Just like many others, Mayumi would never entertain the thought that one of her fellow sisters might turn against them. Since the beginning of their order's history, from the era of Avatar Kyoshi to the present, the sisterhood has always remained strong. With their minds akin and goals alike, the mere idea of treachery is sacrilege!

At least, that is what she personally believed before. Why would any one of her sisters betray the order founded by Kyoshi?

But there is also no code or rules for them to impose in the case of betrayal. Perhaps the founder also never thought a Kyoshi Warrior would commit treason, which is a very wanton idea.

"Our bond cannot be severed," Mayumi defended. Reminding herself that the reputation of her fellow warriors are on the line. "I would never turn my blade against one of my fellow warriors. That is because despite not being related by blood, each one of them is just like my own sister."

"You are blatantly lying to yourself," the Dai Li challenged her firm resolve. "Are you sure there is not a single shred of suspicion towards the others?"

"Absolutely not," she remains defiant.

Her own role as a more senior member for the younger trainees also demands trustworthiness towards others. If she too cannot be open with the other Kyoshi Warriors, then the role of dojo instructor is a unworthy to possess.

"Ideals can blind us. If we swear to defend an individual no matter the cost, what would you do if they betray you first?" The Dai Li then pointed to one example, a very personal one. "I gave you that diary so that you may familiarize with one of the greatest weapons those seditionists can use, and that is trust. Your mother killed people, and not just anyone, she slaughtered young women who might have even been her own students, or perhaps those who were once inspired by her. I doubt she has time to consider the morals."

"Are you trying to get on my bad side?" Mayumi suddenly growled. "Slandering my family is underhanded, even for the likes of you."

"I am not slandering," the Dai Li calmly clarified. "On the contrary, there is merit in her deed. Despite being possibly mortified by the initial sight of traitors, she overcame her ideals and did what must be done to minimize the losses. At least that is what I think when I interpreted the cultist's diary. Your mother has no experience with such sedition and yet demonstrated great agency. If you denounce the act of killing a fellow warrior, then you are also denouncing your own maternal figure."

"You!" Mayumi raised a hand to slap this insolent man. But before that palm can connect the face, she forced the arm to stop.

A quick moment of thinking reminded her that this act will provide further grounds for the Dai Li to apprehend those he views as a criminal. Assaulting an enforcer is obviously a crime. She almost dug her own grave here.

"You suppressed that imprudent impulse, not bad," he remarked callously while ignoring the furious glare. "In my line of work, it is imperative to keep one's emotions in check. For people like us, even the slightest mistake is not tolerated."

"And how does this relate to the renegade cult?" Mayumi demanded.

"Simple, if one of your own is believed to have demonstrated treason, then they must be silenced. The heterodox teaching known as the Acolytes of San Bao not only wishes to murder, but they wish to convert impressionable fools that will do the fighting for them." He then reiterated the original point of contention. What action should be applied when addressing treachery?

Mayumi realized what he may be insinuating. This man bears the impious title of 'inquisitor'. His presence even applied pressure upon other Dai Li members, who themselves are already cold hearted and ruthless in their ways.

"Remember when you asked me where is the other one?" The Dai Li said to the woman.

"What other one?" she tried to sound naive.

"You are not entirely clueless about the elite Earthbenders created by your Avatar, are you curious why I am not accompanied by another Dai Li?"

Mayumi is not amused by this conversation. Suspicion towards every word hindered any sense of meaningful discussion. She is always guarded against potential attempts to frail her relationship with Satchiko. Despite being created by the same person, their roles are completely different.

"Go on them, tell me the story," Mayumi cautiously requested.

It took some moments for the Dai Li to organize the speech. Based on his behavior, it is a deeply personal topic.

"I was not always alone. He was like a brother to me, like siblings despite not sharing the same blood." The Dai Li continued. Yet, none of this seems to have incited any sentimental tone in that sombre voice. The lack of emotion from this man is rather disturbing at times. "We swore an oath. Although the surnames are different, our goals were the same. To uphold order and ensure stability is maintained for the city's populace. All those that threatened the integrity of the state will be met with nothing short of the most appropriate response. All seditionists shall be punished severely for disturbing the harmony. It wasn't complicated, our desire to strengthen the law to a city stricken by perturbation."

Mayumi listened carefully. This is an example of a sworn brotherhood, a concept widely known in Earth Kingdom and Fire nation. When two unrelated individuals share the same goal or interests, they became sworn siblings to achieve that endeavor. Whether if it's lowly daofei groups or prestigious military generals, it can occur anywhere based on shared aspirations. This practice is also common amongst her own people. Her and Satchiko's amicable relationship with Kazuki is also the result of the history between their respective parents, at least the ones Akahana are willing to share. But from personal foggy memory, Akahana and Ubume is at least on friendly terms. How much of it is true, it would be hard to verify without one of them retelling the whole story.

The Dai Li continued.

"Such were the days I have before my ascension to replace another unworthy man," the Dai Li said. "We both sought not to be born on the same day, same month or in the same year. We merely hoped to die on the same day, same month and in the same year. Should we ever betray the friendship, may the Heaven and Earth deliver a worthy punishment."

He paused for a moment, even stopping for a few seconds before resuming the nighttime stroll through the dense alleyways. Mayumi felt the rain has become a bit heavier.

"There is no such thing as divine punishment," he said bitterly, but then quickly regained the usual composure. That harshness in his voice will always be dominant. "It was I who has the strength to do what was be done after he became the very thing we swore to destroy. In hindsight, that oath was a very foolish ordeal to begin with. Setting unrealistic expectations is also the downfall of my personal hubris. I was rewarded with treachery."

Judging by his rather youthful voice, Mayumi deduced the events he described to be not too long ago. Perhaps it all happened in earlier days when he wasn't occupying a higher position.

"Then what happened," the Kyoshi Warrior asked.

"I killed him."

She can feel nothing from that statement. Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising to hear him admitting to fratricide. The Dai Li also emitted no remorse at all.

Under the heaven, fratricide is considered to be to be a great moral transgression. One does not need to be an Earth Sage or scholar to understand the conventional morality since ancient times. The idea of even harming sibling is completely unfathomable to Mayumi.

"You killed someone you consider to be your sibling?" Mayumi asked, almost in an interrogating manner. She imagined many things that a Dai Li would do will be cynical and uncaring. But this certainly has risen above her expectation.

"He was my sibling, but the real fool was actually myself. I allowed pointless emotions to blind earlier judgement." The Dai Li enforced his point rigorously, acting as a stark contrast to Mayumi's more fraternal conviction. "While completely unexpected at the moment of the betrayal, my duty remains the same. I adapted quickly. All those who oppose the state will be met with the appropriate response, and it was also an eye-opening experience for me." He turned to her, saying the next part directly. "There is no such thing as absolute loyalty, not even within the closest of family members. Remember, a kin's death can benefit the relatives the most. The ones left alive will act sorrowful while laughing within as they will ensure a larger share of the inheritance. The first time I killed a traitor, the easier it felt whenever I need to do it again. I wonder how you would respond if that situation."

"Do not test me Dai Li," Mayumi warned. "I am not like you."

"Perhaps not," he remarked. "If the seditionist's diary can be believed, you certainly lack the strong resolve from your mother."

She said nothing to counter this criticism. It is a disturbing idea. But every Kyoshi Warrior views each other as sisters, a bond shared since childhood. The simple insinuation that one of them might betray the people infuriates Mayumi, as such accusations are completely groundless and may drive a wedge between within the sisterhood. Although she has complete faith in her friends, especially Satchiko, it is hard to reconcile this commitment with what is written in Huo's diary.

One key question arose while reaching through the pages. If all the events described in the book is true, such as the killing of many senior villagers due to the betrayal of young Kyoshi Warrior trainees, why is this not known widely in the village? Surely it would be useful for the newer generation to be aware of some stranger who tries to influence them. If the elders and leading figures of the island are all aware of this, then does that mean there was a concerted effort? Could her mother's position as a leading figure have a defining role in this matter?

"What a marvelous sight," the Dai Li remarked with sarcasm.

Mayumi did not have time to ponder as their walk abruptly ended. What lies before them appears to be a giant structure meshed together, stacking on top of each other in a tight manner. The building is neither appealing in its appearance over emits a sense of safety. Unlike the walls of this city, the structure in front of them almost give off the impression that it can fell apart easily. Yet, there are people inside, lively, all in a pleasant mood.

"The poorest parts of the Lower Ring are always like this, a tightly packed together mess barely holding itself together. It creates convenient places like this away from the public eye." The Dai Li is accustomed to the environment which he must always venture into. Mayumi remembered the path they took. As someone who is simply following the man in brocade robe, she felt he can precisely locate the position of this building that serves as the destination. "Human nature is driven by greed and lust," he continued. "People fashion themselves as virtuous beings, yet they engage in indecent behaviors that are not coherent with the moral code. But that is a problem for the Earth Sages. For me, the subject in question has violated the legal code of Ba Sing Se and must be punished accordingly."

Mayumi inquired him about this place. The simple appearance of the site alone does not indicate a hidden gathering of cultists. It is too open, and the establishment felt more like an illegal business that some underground sacred site which those acolytes would congregate.

"We are not here to deal with the religious fanatic," the Dai Li clarified. "We are here to address a type of people which I consider to be worse than an enemy."

The presence of obscene vulgarity can be felt from that unsightly building. Obviously, this Dai Li isn't going to march right through the main entrance if he does not intend to reveal himself or kill everyone deemed unneeded for the cells. She believes he usually does not leave any adult cultists alive, but clearly this situation does not involve the Acolytes of San Bao. The building is less hidden, almost like a deteriorated shop of sort. Not even those religious fanatics would be foolish enough to not disguise their hideout.

"We will enter from the side. A mere window would suffice for our infiltration. I believe you do not need much explanation on how this works."

"Of course not," Mayumi scoffed. "I don't need Earthbending to complete the task."

Their tactics are similar, which relies on exceptional stealth honed by years of training. Despite the difference in weapons, the methods are decided by the same person after all. The Dai Li chose the entrance point, a third-floor window on the left side of building. He forcefully gripped the surface of the wall with a hand encased in earth, effortlessly climbing the surface to the dangerous height while remaining quiet.

Clinging the gauntlet to the window, he looked down at the woman who isn't born with this ability. She stared back with an unimpressed expression.

Before Mayumi can start the climb, she was distracted by the scene inside the main hall. Sounds of vivid laughter suggest that this place might be a secret gambling house that attracts the lowest ranks of society. The Dai Li are likely fully aware of this location but might have not demolished it for ulterior motives.

"Need help?" The Dai Li offered.

"I don't need any patronization at this point," Mayumi retorted.

She leaped onto a nearby building that is easier to climb. Using the roof, she utilized the vantage point jumped to the window. While the Dai Li have the power of Earthbending, she compensates the lack of this gift by being more physically active. After both of them successfully entered the building, she became even more vigilant. The corridors lack any torches to illuminate the dark. The other occupants may also be frightened by the Dai Li.

"Do you even wonder why daofei bandits are so prevalent outside the city while almost never hear about them in the Lower Ring?" His question was met with silence. It might be safer to not say a thing and let him explain. "Since its founding, the Lower Ring has always remained a place diseased with corruption and crime. Disorderly citizens would use the district's sheer population to conceal their unlawful behaviors. All of that changed when we were created. While armies can slay hordes of renegades in battle, outlaw groups that hides itself inside Ba Sing Se would think twice before revealing themselves to the public. Most would be apprehended. But the ones that survived would have to be the most cunning of them all, and the most dangerous."

"The other Dai Li agents all refer to you as an inquisitor, I don't see how that name is related to combating crime," Mayumi challenged.

"My role encompasses many things, but my main purpose is to handle disloyalty amongst my fellow brocade guards," he insinuated. "While mundane affairs are mostly addressed by regular lawmen patrols, it is inevitable that my specialized task will come into contact with miscreant elements of society."

"Then why do you also go after underground cults?" Mayumi pressed on, trying to learn about her potential advisory. She isn't asking these questions out of genuine curiosity, but to study this opponent should he enact malice again.

The Dai Li contemplated for a moment before answering. It felt as if he is always two steps ahead of her.

"I do not foresee your treachery in the near future as the consequences would be unimaginable. I will grant you the answer. Although my purpose is to seek out traitors, that doesn't mean the enforcement of order and harmony is no longer needed, as there will always be those who wish to transgress the law. Although they are secondary to my official task of purging the ranks, a seditionist is still a seditionist no matter who they chose to affiliate with."

They stopped at a door leading to a room with the number 'four 'written on it. As a daughter to someone who is interested in Earth Kingdom geomancy known as Feng Shui, Mayumi recognizes it as an inauspicious sign. This number sounds very similar with the word 'death', so most buildings would not include it.

The Dai Li did not immediately enter, preferring to listen to the voices of the occupants. The words are greatly muffled by the wall, but a conversation can be somewhat identified. There are two individuals inside.

Mayumi and the Khu Li waited, the former unsure how this brocade uniform guard will proceed. She suspects that whoever is behind the door might be stronger than regular lowly criminals. The title of 'inquisitor' is obviously used to label those who eliminates disloyalty amongst an organization. Judging at his history and unfriendly demeanor with the other men in silk brocade, even someone like her can guess that tonight's target is another Dai Li agent.

But what reasons would a cultural guardian be considered a traitor? She never considered the reasons, as most of time being cautious about them is more important.

Her handle involuntary reached for the sword's handle. A rogue Dai Li might be inferior in number, but even just one might be more dangerous than a whole den of religious fanatics. As much as she may not enjoy the presence of these men, there is no denying that they are highly skilled Earthbenders who are also trained since childhood.

She held her breath when the conversation suddenly stopped. Did the occupants realize their presence?

The Dai Li standing nearby also picked up this new development. Without warning, he gently knocked on the door. Slow and sluggish footsteps behind can be heard behind th ageing wooden entrance.

The door creeped open with a small gap.

"May I help you?" A woman timidly asked. She doesn't appear intimidated as a local of Ba Sing Se would normally do. This flawless effort to remain calm and collected has instead achieved the opposite result, the Dai Li is now even more suspicious.

The inquisitor said nothing, barging into the room much to the tenant's dismay. Mayumi remained outside as the Dai Li quickly glanced around the space, noticing the emptiness.

"You are all alone here?" The Dai Li demanded.

The woman nodded. "Yes, it just me and no one else."

Much to Mayumi's horror, the Dai Li suddenly brandished his liuyedao saber, pointing it at the woman in an unexplainable manner.

"The crime of lying to an official will incur heavy punishment, I will overlook your offense for now, but do not test my patience and generosity," he warned. His sharp gaze quickly swiped at Mayumi's direction, insinuating that her interference is unnecessary. The Dai Li turned back to the other woman. "Reveal the whereabouts of the other occupant in this room, and I will grant you an amnesty, this is my final demand."

"I swear there is no one else!"

Despite the Dai Li's forcefulness, the woman in this room defended her innocence. At first glance, there is nothing special about this place. While it is rather spacious, the lack of furniture meant the occupant never have much to begin with. It is a rather mundane apartment with only a single bed and a wooden closet. Since this location is not close to the ground, hidden compartments are also unlikely. The only anomaly is some noticeable dirt imbedded between the cracks on a rotting wooden table. Nothing else can indicate that this occupant has broken the law.

The Dai Li glanced once at the only window to this room. Mayumi stood still, wondering what this callous individual will do next. But unlike last time, she does not plan to intervene immediately.

"The world may appear attractive, yet its pleasures are nothing but poison that pollutes the ranks of embroidered brocades. How disappointing, it seems not even the finer ones can fully guard themselves against petty temptations." The inquisitor than used his earthen glove and molded a cuff for the woman's arms, immobilizing them. Mayumi once again chose to not intervene, yet her hand always remained firm on the weapon's handle. The one handed dao given by Shan is rather flexible, especially in closed areas with little space. But despite the harmless appearance of the arrested, the swordswoman chose not to endanger herself like last time. She may not fully agree with the Dai Li's action, but this time it's different.

"Your refusal to cooperate with my authority will be further investigated," said the inquisitor. He tries to escort her out of the room.

Understandably, the woman fiercely resisted the Dai Li's arrest, insisting that she has done no wrong. While it is extremely rare for a person to not immediately be afraid of these men in robes, the cultural guardian shows little leniency. Just as he was about to usher her out, the woman suddenly performed a swift movement. Despite having both forearms immobilized by the solid earth cuff, she managed to kick him across the chest. Mayumi didn't react much, already aware that this man has rather high endurance for pain. The inquisitor only stumbled a few steps back before once again unsheathing the saber. Here, he also demonstrated what might happen if Mayumi strike a Dai Li.

"Your crime of assault is a bold one," he stated coldly. "Are you aware that such an act is punishable by death?"

The tenant remained defiant. Surprisingly, she shows no concern for her own life, not even the consequences from a Dai Li can deter this behavior.

"Kill me then!" She challenged. "I dare you!"

Mayumi is caught off guard, she realized that this form of courage is rather exceptional, because it is beyond logic for a normal citizen living in Ba Sing Se. No, this taunt is simply suicidal! She wanted to step in as the Dai Li brandished his weapon dangerously. But something else prevented her from acting.

"I see that you are not grateful for my generosity." One does not simply attack a Dai Li and expect no consequences. Those that escaped unharmed are the luckiest of them all since these cultural guardians has the jurisdiction to serve as judge, jury and executioner. Anyone they suspect to have committed treason can be easily exterminated.

Obviously, the Dai Li would not let this blatant disrespect go unpunished. He positioned his saber, preparing to forcefully swing it at the tenant. It took all her power for Mayumi to remain silent, deciding to gamble on the outcome. Her eyes quickly glanced at the window and back.

As the blade was swung, she quickly averted her eyes. But a sudden scuffled forced to her to once again be attentive of the scene.

A stone gauntlet caught the inquisitor's blade. Between the female tenant and the man with face paint is another Dai Li, who managed to block the sword's strike with a palm encased in earth. He locked it in place before yanking it away, throwing to the side. This new cultural guardian then stood protectively, shielding the woman from the Khu Li. He also undone the earthen cuff.

The disarmed inquisitor is still here. Nothing changed except this new Dai Li willingly exposed himself. But this whole time, the inquisitor wasn't interested in knowing where this man was hiding. Even Mayumi already sensed someone was hanging outside the window.

Just what game is this cruel inquisitor playing here?

"It is delusional to think that your action would have no consequences," the Khu Li stated coldly, showing a metal badge of his rank to the pair. While speaking with the defensive duo, he marched over to the closet and picked up a few sculptures made of earth. Having already expended two gauntlets to mold a cuff, he needs to recreate the signature weapon before combat. Such is the weakness to this rare technique, requiring the user to constantly refill. But only the masters can recreate the gauntlets with perfect accuracy from scratch. "To think that such disgrace can occur to a senior officer of the eastern depot, how lovely." His disdain against the rogue Dai Li is something which Mayumi has never witnessed before. She always saw how the other brocade guards stood in fear of this man. But now does appear obvious that the inquisitor's murderous intent was suppressed in the presence of others.

"Zhao Jingzhong, you are accused of divulging sensitive state secrets to criminal elements," the inquisitor scathed. "As a senior officer, you should know the rules better than myself. Consider your seniority, I will allow you the privilege to explain the punishment for such audacious treason."

The rogue Dai Li didn't say anything against this allegation. He continues to shield the woman. Both tried their best to suppress their fear towards the brocade guard inquisitor. Mayumi watched quietly, while also remaining anxious at the scene's escalation.

"Do not harm her!" the Dai Li named Zhao Jingzhong shouted. "I am the one who broke the rules!"

The woman behind him countered this statement. Unlike before, she now insists that all the fault lies in herself, pleading the innocence of Zhao Jingzhong.

The inquisitor is not lenient in his judgement. He cited the rules which both Dai Li agents understood. It is stated that those who intentionally tried to access state secrets, even a civilian, will be punished severely. This is also ignoring the even more treacherous act of collaborating with an officer who has committed treason.

"How touching, now I am confident where your loyalty lies," the Khu Li said with no emotion. It is clear that the inquisitor is disgusted by the sight of both individuals trying to cast the blame on themselves instead of each other. "Jingzhong, you allowed petty temptations to sway your loyalty. If your interaction with this woman has just been a sly against the director, then maybe he would have been more merciful. Not only did you betray his trust, but this treason has also endangered the lives of fellow collogues, especially me." He made it clear that the lives of other Dai Li weights lesser than his own, a trait which someone who bears the title of 'inquisitor' would undoubtedly possess. "If the allegations are proven true, do you both know what would happen?"

Zhao Jingzhong, despite also being a ruthless Dai Li, becomes even more anxious. Mayumi never saw a cultural guardian behave this way. A secret language between the two brocade guards must have implicated detrimental consequences for the officer's alleged crimes, resulting in mortal danger.

Instead of fighting, Zhao Jingzhong appealed to the inquisitor, choosing his words wisely in this futile attempt to save both his and the woman's lives.

"I may not know who you underneath that face paint but let me be clear that I have nothing against you or the director," he pleaded, trying not to stutter. For Mayumi, it is rather bizarre to see a cold-hearted cultural guardian appearing weak. The inquisitor allows him to finish the speech. "We promise to disappear off the face of this earth, never to resurface if you let us go. We just want to live in peace." The woman also nodded behind Zhao Jingzhong's back, reassuring this promise.

"In consideration of our brotherhood, I beg you," Zhao Jingzhong finished. He then noticed the veiled woman shaking her head repeatedly. It is an expression of pity.

The inquisitor's expression darkened significantly. "I see, it's great to hear your final words."

Zhao Jingzhong is shocked when the inquisitor suddenly shot out a chain from the sleeves, with an attached cuff trying to ensnare the Earthbender. The vast majority of normal benders cannot manipulate metal, which makes this material ideal to capture specific individuals.

But the rogue Dai Li is no lowly daofei bandit that would stay idle as an attack was launched. He caught the chain with ease, using the earth gauntlet and locked it into the wall.

Inquisitor's first chain is rendered useless. But before he can use the other one, the same tactic is initiated by Zhao Jingzhong. The rogue employed both chains to attack the inquisitor. The wooden material of the room meant using the surrounding as a weapon is limited.

The Khu Li chose to dodge the attacks, a difficult feat even for the experienced inquisitor. He is not fighting an ordinary outlaw. Despite being tasked with purging traitors, it is by no means an easy role. He is more likely to be killed by another Dai Li then some lowly criminal. Using the short opening to shoot one of his earth gauntlets, it intentionally struck the woman and lock one arm against the back wall. This move aims to distract Zhao Jingzhong, using his distraught emotion to lower the defense.

Both of them exchanged barrages of small earth bullets, each piece can lethally penetrate the fresh that is protected with nothing but embroidered brocade. The room immediately became part of the collateral. Frail wooden furniture is torn apart by the violent speed of small, hardened earth tiles. Wooden walls behind the two are littered with countless holes.

Although the inquisitor only has one gauntlet left of munition to utilize, his superior skills and Zhao Jingzhong's emotional concern ensures that the tide of this fight is somewhat balanced.

As they try to avoid each other's projectiles, one pellet finally lands a hit. Both men stopped, lowering their arms simultaneously. While this short fight between two Dai Li does not involve potent Earthbending with giant boulders, it is without a doubt a very intensive duel without brute force. A contest of speed and precision, one strike is all it takes to determine the outcome.

"Consider yourself somewhat worthy," the inquisitor said in a nonchalant manner. "You were very close." His hands are bare, every earth tile that composes a Dai Li's signature gauntlet is all gone, a reminder that having a cultural guardian as an opponent is already a death wish. If Zhao Jingzhong has simply remained in the fight a second longer, then it would be the inquisitor's end.

"Jingzhong!" the woman screamed with tears.

The inquisitor approaches the unmoving Dai Li. He retrieved Zhao Jingzhong's metal badge hanging on the side of the brocade, it is a piece of belonging that all brocade clad guards would own. With a gentle nudge, the man with face paint pushed the presumably dead rogue to slowly fall backward and slammed to the wooden floor. It was a heart wrenching sight for the woman to watch.

"It's disappointing to see your ambition end here, even I once thought you would rose through the ranks and achieve greatness," the inquisitor remarked, seemingly talking with a dead man. "Cohabitating with a daofei woman is an embarrassing thing. It is also dangerous. While I might be able to overlook your disgrace, trading sensitive secrets is a different matter."

He then looked around the room, seeking the saber. It is on the ground near the daofei whose wrist is still restrained to the wall.

"As for you, death is not set in stone," the inquisitor said to the distraught woman whose arm is locked to the wall. That was no reassurance. One might even claim that he is acting disturbingly merciful for a ruthless cultural guardian. "An enemy might be an annoyance. But I personally detest traitors even more." He marched with hands behind his backs, reaching the spot where the saber is positioned.

Just as he was about to pick up the sword, something darkened his vision. It binds to the eyes, like a hand that is made of earth ensnaring the face.

"Die scum!" A loud voice echoed the room. Although the Dai Li's quick thinking allows the timely removal of the blinding object, the woman is now upon him, punching aggressively at his limbs. The jabs were indeed painful for the flesh that is protected with nothing but a uniform of silk brocade. One of her attacks struck the chest area. Particularly painful.

The brocade guard swiftly shoved the daofei back with a palm strike. Despite his cunning nature, the woman's attack was not anticipated.

"I see that you have somewhat grasped the most basic form of this strictly guarded skill, normal Earthbenders would not be able to use the gauntlet without being taught by one of our own," the inquisitor realized that the object is the same earth gauntlet he used to restrain the daofei. The woman managed to utilize it to her own advantage, albeit in a rather flimsy manner. This insignificant revelation has created great concern within this cultural guardian.

"My suspicions are proven correct. The traitor has indeed been emanating such clandestine technique. Just thinking about the fact that he has taught you the most fundamental skill has made me reconsider a potential amnesty." He glared at the outlaw woman. "Zhao Jingzhong failed to keep his mouth shut, but perhaps yours would be more compliant. Colluding with a civil servant against the state is already an offense that is punishable by death. But you clearly demonstrated the intention to further understand sensitive secrets. No matter, after some interrogation to ensure that you did not divulge this technique to others, you can rest peacefully."

"I doubt you would have the opportunity to see that," the woman snarled, picking up the liuyedao sword. "Yes, I have indeed been trying to master a Dai Li's gauntlet. But that is only one of my skills that I learnt to survive the world of Jiang Hu."

"I see no difference between daofei outlaws and vigilantism, both has transgressed the laws of Ba Sing Se," the inquisitor stood unconvinced by the woman's reasoning. In his eyes, even 'righteous' outlaws are worthy of punishment. This city is home to the most efficient and ruthless secret police. Any criminals who managed survived long enough to accumulate great skills are even more dangerous than random highwayman throughout the continent. This woman, this daofei, almost attained the knowledge of utilizing the Dai Li's signature weapon, the earth gauntlet. Such technique is drastically different from common Earthbenders who rely on brute force in their attacks, but it is even more lethal in the hands of those who can master it. The criminal underworld would have no qualm selling this technique to the highest bidder.

"You underestimated me, Embroidered Uniform Guard, I didn't get this far with my Earthbending alone," the daofei taunted. She holstered the blade with evident proficiency with no signs of flimsiness. Not only does her skillset involve competent Earthbending, it seems that swordplay is also a familiar concept.

The Dai Li sighed, interpreting this as just a futile part attempt to avenge her lover.

"I pity you, escaping might have been a better option, if only-"

He realized that the earth gauntlet in his hand refuse to move with the flesh. Something is wrong, yet also familiar.

The inquisitor stepped one foot back, instinctively trying to distance himself from the armed daofei. But even without overexerting body in this trivial maneuver, a tight sensation grasped his chest.

The man hastened his breathing. After a few seconds of trying to suppress that discomfort, blood suddenly spilled uncontrollably out of the mouth. A disgusting vomit filled with crimson.

The Dai Li remained composed despite this unexplainable phenomenon.

Using this opportunity, the woman charged forward, swinging the blade with utter aggression. Even though the inquisitor is trained to exterminate traitors amongst his fellow cultural guardians, this circumstance is beyond even his calculative mind. Any daofei who managed to live long in Ba Sing Se are more than just dangerous criminals, and this is just one small example.

"The same day of next year would be your first death anniversary!" She screamed on top of her lungs.

With blood flowing from his mouth, the inquisitor moved backward, dodging the violent swings of his own cold steel. The earth gauntlet refuses to bend to his will, and the thin brocade is also no armor against the blade's sharp edge.

Despite trying to evade the strikes with absolute swiftness, the Dai Li is inevitably maimed by the woman's skillful swordplay. The saber slashed through his silk robe unopposed, narrowly avoiding the limbs entirely. And the earth gauntlet is insufficient in blocking the blows since the user cannot bend the earth to his will.

He stumbled backwards, both legs grappled with a numbing sensation. It seems that every step he took, the body becomes frailer. More blood is coughed up uncontrollably.

The Dai Li inquisitor just moments ago demonstrated utter ruthlessness against a traitor, is now pathetically backed against a wall. The daofei cornered him, using her sword and swing at the brocade clad man.

"Go to the underworld, Dai Li scoundrel!"

The Dai Li used his two bare hands, trying to catch the blade's vertical slash. Such a feat is almost impossible unless the practitioner is skilled in melee combat. But luck is also not with the inquisitor. If he fails, the sword will certainly cut through the skull.

Right before the renegade's blade can contact the Dai Li's unprotected hands, someone else finally decided to intervene. A well placed dao parried the woman's blow. The inquisitor helplessly clasped his chest while watching the two clashed blades.

Mayumi is evenly matched with her opponent's swordplay. To increase her odds, the daofei employed hand to hand combat, trying to jab at vital points across the meridian. In return, all the punches are easily countered with the Kyoshi Warrior's own spare hand, averting the strikes with the wrist.

The daofei woman is surprised as all her attacks were nullified with ease.

"You know chi-blocking too?" she asked in dismay.

Mayumi chose not to respond. Keeping the opponent guessing can be advantageous.

They both returned to dueling. Mayumi parried and then riposted an attack, managing to wound the opponent's forearm. She then swiftly jabbed at vital points across the daofei's knee area, disabling the legs too.

The outlaw woman fell to the floor, completely unable to walk.

Mayumi then went over to the Dai Li who is slumping against the wall with more blood flowing from the mouth. "I am surprised you didn't die immediately," she said underneath the veil. A consecutive of forceful jabs across several points across his meridian is quickly delivered. To the Dai Li's amazement, the limbs are now obeying his will and the blood ceased to surge up the throat. All the pain are reduced significantly.

With a silk brocade robe stained in blood, the Dai Li recomposed himself by standing up, looking at the injured daofei now sitting on the floor.

His expression is a mixture of irritation and curiosity. This daofei has indeed came very close to killing him. Only a twisted mind can respect someone who almost ended his own life.

"Impressive, both you and Jingzhong has almost ended my career permanently," he said to the female outlaw. Not an ounce of fear was devoted to the near-death experience. The Earthbending has also been revitalized, so the Dai Li can once again fully utilize the earth gauntlet.

He held out a long chain with a cuff attached to it, preparing to capture the rogue Earthbender.

"You are wrong, it seems I will live beyond today," he taunted. "Your partner is dead, what are you going to do anyway?"

Just as he was about to use the metal chain to ensnare the Earthbending woman, the daofei crawled towards the dead Zhao Jingzhong. With the sword still in her hand, the woman hugged the fallen Dai Li.

"You will join him eventually," the inquisitor stated in a callous remark. "Now, we will return to our base and-"

The daofei used the saber and slit her own throat. Just like that, her own body slumped over to cover the dead Zhao Jingzhong.

The room became silent in an instance.

The Dai Li's expression remains unchanging, still maintaining that intimidating face accompanied by the face paint. All of Mayumi's expression of this sight is concealed by the veil cloak. She fought pirates and bandits, all those who tries to harm her people. But this act of inconsolable forlorn is beyond her own comprehension.

"I don't even know her name," she said quietly. "Yet she is so strong."

This nameless daofei has transgressed the law of Ba Sing Se, but nothing was personally inflicted on the Kyoshi Warrior or close friends. Which is why this outlaw woman's sudden death brought neither relief nor sadness. It's a strange sentiment that Mayumi has yet to grasp.

"I expect no sympathy from you," he warned. The Dai Li then cautiously approached the dead pair while remaining vigilant. After ensuring that both are indeed no longer alive, he sighed in annoyance. "I have truly forgotten that there are such people who are willing to take their secrets to the grave." He then insinuates that this daofei woman's action is to ensure no interrogation would be possible, hindering the process of rooting out others who is trying to learn the gauntlet technique.

Mayumi didn't say anything despite her own objection to this cruel and uncaring observation. The affection between this outlaw and Zhao Jingzhong matters little in the Dai Li's eye.

"Isn't this... a bit too much?" Her words are vague, unsure what to address at this moment.

He walked over the only closet of the room. A thorough investigation yielded some problematic items. Parchments of Earthbending scrolls and copies of earth gauntlets made of small earth tiles are discovered. There is even a parchment that details the layout of a nameless compound. The careful inquisitor ensures that Mayumi couldn't even attain one glance at the pages. However, the implications are now clear.

"Remember this Kyoshi Warrior, any state secrets that are shared without authentic legal approval is punishable by death." He examined the evidence, all of which are damning to the dead duo.

Zhao Jingzhong has indeed colluded with this female daofei. It is apparent that this pair intends to share strictly guarded techniques employed by the elusive secret police. In a highly dense place like Ba Sing Se's Lower Ring, specialized Earthbending technique that utilizes precision and speed is superior to the conventional approach of utilizing massive projectiles. Criminal elements adapting the secrets of the Dai Li would certainly be catastrophic.

"We are done here," the Dai Li said. Just as she thought his callousness would end, the inquisitor then used the saber to cut off the queue ponytail from Zhao Jingzhong.

"He is already gone, why need this unneeded discretion?" Mayumi challenged. In Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, it is culturally unacceptable to remove one's long hair as it signifies tremendous dishonor. But usually, it is the person themself who would perform the act. "This man may not be your relative, but he was part of your brotherhood."

"Brotherhood is not an accurate word," he retorted. "Only fools entertain the idea of absolute loyalty. The likes of us do not have the luxury which you Kyoshi Warriors have."

It is a completely different world that a Dai Li are forced to inhabit. The hearts of people and the fabric of trust is fickle. Thus, harder to control. If this man who bears the role of inquisitor has no qualm in killing a fellow Dai Li, how many times has he committed such an act? She lamented on this. Did he truly felt nothing when executing who are essentially his peers?

They took a gradual exit out of this compound. This whole building just felt like a labyrinth, difficult to navigate and a breeding ground for sedition. The Dai Li took all the parchments and destroyed any gauntlets found inside that room. Once finally emerged into the world under the nightly sky, he held out a hand. A messenger hawk with brown feathers landed on his arm.

"A new bird?" Mayumi remarked.

"Precisely," he said without enthusiasm. "To put your pedantic mind at rest, someone else will give those two seditionists a proper burial."

Once he sent the hawk off, they resumed the nightly stroll as if nothing much had happened. Ba Sing Se is known for its walls but also its secrets. Much can be kept hidden with the vast amount of people who inhabits the Lower Ring. Yet, the power of the aristocracy also enjoys their fair share of conspiratorial ideas. The hard exterior of this city at first glance is indeed impressive, much more grandeur than some backwater island village. Yet, the more she saw what lies underneath the gleaming shell, her longing for home has grown more.

Such is the price of seeing more of the world. A holistic view of lands outside her home meant acknowledging the good and the bad. But Mayumi's biggest concern is still about her own sister, who has witnessed too much horror on the way to Ba Sing Se.

"Stay here and don't move."

Her pondering ended when they both stopped at the end of a random alley, the Dai Li soon ventured out to what seems to be a local bazaar, a place that is sheltered from the heavy rain. Hopefully the blood on his robe is diluted with rainwater, concealing the stench of blood to others. This 'learning experience field trip' is dictated by a high-ranking Dai Li who can unmake anyone he so wishes. Even the simplest order such as remaining idle is a command that must be followed to avoid consequences. But the true danger of this so-called inquisitor is discovered in a pattern that Mayumi is slowly recognizing.

He is keen on exploiting the emotions of others, a weapon that might be even more dangerous than Earthbending. An accomplished Kyoshi Warrior like herself do not fear a Dai Li agent. While indeed a very powerful opponent, one cultural guardian is still someone she is willing to fight if the situation allows it. But there are limitations in direct confrontation. Using objects or people to extort his enemies can sway a fight to the Dai Li's favor. Toying with their aspirations and desire is underhanded, but admittedly quite effective. Even the most resilient warrior of this world has something they cherish deeply. Perhaps that is where this specific Dai Li has discovered to be a great tool at the disposal, turning attachment against his foes.

"You scoundrel," Mayumi cannot help but utter quietly. It is frustrating to even think about how he applied this tactic against her. No matter how skillful her swordsmanship may be, the Dai Li can keep the weapon sheathed with words alone. Satchiko must remain safe no matter the cost. Even if Mayumi herself has to occasionally bow to this embroidered uniform guard.

"I have returned," he intentionally loudened the sound of the stone boots. Mayumi wondered if he heard the earlier insult.

A small bag is tossed at her directly. She caught it, opening the content and discover what seems to be food.

"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded.

The Dai Li gave no explanation as they both to resume the walk deeper into the alleyways. His own hand reached into another bag, pulling out a steamed bun and bite out half of it.

"If you do not intend to eat, then return that one to me," he said.

Still wary and suspicious, Mayumi cautiously took a bite out of her own portion. There does not seem to be any poison administered. The chewy meat inside the layer of white flour is rather succulent for something sold by unprofessional street vendors.

"There is something I need clarifications on," the Dai Li suddenly said. "As the daofei came close to killing me, I did not order you to intervene."

"Save it," she retorted immediately. "I don't want to discuss about the details of what I can and can't do. Since I have saved your life, the least you can do is not fixate on petty things."

"But you have disobeyed me," he replied without courtesy, not even a simple 'thank you' was used to demonstrate gratitude.

In hindsight, allowing this inquisitor to die might not be the safest option for Mayumi and Satchiko's safety. This may seem contradictory at first. But considering that the death of a high-ranking Dai Li will not be easily glossed over, it is inevitable that Mayumi's involvement will be brought into question. She cannot trust this man's vow to conceal her secret identity. In the scenario that other enforcers are also aware of this arrangement, the death of this man meant no one else will enforce the probation. Other Dai Li agents may have no qualm in apprehending them both upon discovering their status as 'fugitives' wanted by the state of Yi.

"I was not aware that your proficiency in chi-blocking can also revert the process of my death, very impressive," he stated.

Mayumi said nothing, fully aware that this might be a ploy to further understand her capability. It is true, the Dai Li would have certainly died without her intervention. Upon witnessing the hand movement displayed by that nameless woman, she instantly recognized it as the one and only chi-blocking. Such technique is mastered by very few people of this world. It is often employed by non-benders against bending foes, effective when used correctly. Victims would experience numbness in body parts that are affected, and benders would also lose their greatest advantage.

But this skill is extremely difficult to learn. It takes years of practice to even by somewhat proficient. The user must have extensive knowledge of the human anatomy, memorizing pressure points and understanding the meridian of chi flow. Even after mastering the basics, using this technique in a real fight is still a tremendous challenge. The art of chi-blocking is a fully melee style, practitioners must therefore use their own hands to jab at pressure points in the flesh. The element of surprise is often key to yield a successful strike as a foe that is knowledgeable of this technique can easily defend against it. That last daofei is an Earthbender, which certainly masks the possibility of her proficiency in a technique used by mostly non-benders. But aside from that, there are still plenty of limitations. The existence of armor would essentially nullify any attempts to disable the chi paths. Thus, Mayumi's equipment and understanding of this technique was a perfect counter against that daofei woman, and the Dai Li has certainly underestimated his foe.

Mayumi contemplated on the dilemma to further explain the blood which this Dai Li coughed up earlier. He likely has his own questions, especially by how the body involuntarily coughed so much blood despite not suffering from external wounds. The awareness towards chi-blocking is common, especially for these cultural guardians who are elite Earthbenders trained from youth. Although it is a skill that disables bending and induces paralysis on the body, few people of this world can comprehend an even more horrifying side of this non-bending art. Some fringe groups would claim that striking very specific pressure points on the body can induce death or delayed death to an opponent. It is named the 'Touch of Death'. Many people would utterly denounce it as idiocy, believing there is no way that simple jabbing with one's hand can kill an opponent.

Mayumi too thought this wasn't possible, but her knowledge is limited as the art of chi-blocking was introduced by someone outside Kyoshi Island from a long time ago, since the heroic days of her great grandmother. This technique is taught to more warriors by a woman from a distant land. Now, newer generations are instructed by their older peers. It would be too arrogant to claim they are the sole masters of this technique. Surely there are those who are much more familiar with different variations, and today she has indeed been lucky enough to witness its existence. The sight of the victim coughing up blood due to damages in his meridian is indeed proof that such a feat is possible, but it also cements the legendary claim that it is almost impossible to learn.

While this 'Touch of Death' technique is used by few people on this world, negating its effect might require a chi-blocker that is also proficient in realigning the meridian paths to its normal self. This logic also applies to disabling paralysis, but it demands a somewhat competent practitioner. It was actually a miracle that her earlier intervention actually worked to reverse the impending effect. She wasn't sure herself on the exact points to jab. Her competency is still far from reaching the levels of the older warriors.

"You could have died today," Mayumi revealed. "I would not exactly celebrate it. But it is the truth."

The Dai Li accepted her words without much reaction, recognizing the greater understanding towards this niche technique employed mostly by non-benders.

"Perhaps so," he replied. "But it truly wouldn't be a surprise if I somehow meet my end within the ghettos of Lower Ring. As I emphasized before, only the strongest daofei can ever thrive within these walls in an independent manner. Anyone survived our predecessors would indeed become stronger in skill and wit, and this form of selection also applies to any seditionists who wish to defy us today." The harsh environment may have eliminated many fringe elements that threatens the harmony. Which is why the strongest criminals will find other ways to forge a place in the dense network of alleys and labyrinths of the Lower Ring. An underground world of thieves and unlawful behaviors are not the only enemy for these brocade guards. The existence of this new faith, the Acolytes of San Bao and their desire to usurp the world's beliefs and traditions, is another foe that stood in opposition to the curators of Ba Sing Se. This city will never be conquered with military might, but it is vulnerable to threats within the walls.

"So, now that you have witnessed my main purpose to ensure maintain the loyalty of the brocade ranks, what do you think?" He inquired like a teacher asking a student, expecting her to learn and understand the world from his perspective. While it is both impressive and alarming that this man has the capability to kill another equally powerful Dai Li agent, something else troubled her.

"Khu Li," she looked at him straight at those beady eyes. "I acknowledge your skill and resolve in the handling of traitors. While it is obvious our duty is affected by different circumstances, there is something I wish know, and a candid answer would be preferred."

"Speak freely," he replied.

Mayumi readied herself before asking a very ample question. This also concerns her own mother, the matron who may or may not have killed other Kyoshi Warriors who turned against her people. She personally would never entertain the thought of harming a fellow friend or family, not in a million years. But the harsh reality is that treachery spares no one, and the ugly truth demands her to at least explore the perspective of the cynically minded. Especially from the type of people that disgraced her Avatar, a Dai Li agent!

"How did you do it? How can kill you a fellow Dai Li without even considering mercy?"

"All those who broke the rules are ought to be silenced," he replied logically. But it is an answer she still struggles to grasp. "Reward and punishment are a key cornerstone of legalism. As a retainer for a scholar who studies this philosophy, you should at least know a bit. Let me elaborate in a precise manner, the crime of colluding with a seditionist and sharing clandestine secrets is beyond simple treason, it is an act that can only be tolerated with a traitor's death. Kyoshi Warrior, I advise you to not allow emotions to blind the vision of the greater picture. Sometimes hesitancy due to indecisiveness will only result in more unneeded losses. A lowly man like Zhao Jingzhong committed such a grave treachery that not even his doom can fully eradicate the consequences. He should be grateful that I am amicable enough to deliver a swift and mostly painless death."

"That's not what I was asking!" Mayumi clarified. But his initial response is also rather disturbing. There was no remorse or sadness in his voice, not even slightly affected by the killing of a fellow Dai Li. With a firmer tone, she stated a clearer question. "How do you not appear emotionally burdened? Your hand now stains the blood of a colleague. Even if he has committed a great transgression, did you not feel anything?"

He glared, unamused by this question.

"I believe there should be no sympathy for traitors," he replied with resolute. "Zhao Jingzhong was a senior officer. Not only did he commit cohabitation with a daofei, even you also witnessed the result of his blatant distribution of state secrets. His defiance not only offended the director, but it also extends to my interest." The Dai Li is referring to the prospect that the disgraced Dai Li was teaching a daofei how to wield their gauntlets. While the element of earth is plentiful and versatile, learning how to control it with a vastly different technique requires the guidance of someone who is already familiar with it.

Mayumi acknowledges his logic. Most people in this world have hands and legs. But using them in specialized methods do require training. If it wasn't for an outsider teaching her predecessors about the basics of chi-blocking, this technique would not have been part of a Kyoshi Warrior's training today.

The Dai Li inquisitor continued his indignation towards the already dead Zhao Jingzhong, highlighting how by teaching a daofei on how to use the gauntlet, it endangers other brocade guards who would not suspect this form of attack. Thus, creating more causalities for his fellow cultural guardians. By this metric, Zhao Jingzhong is not just a rulebreaker. He is also traitor, something worse in the sharp eyes of his specific Dai Li whose face is concealed with an opera face paint.

"Kyoshi Warrior, considering that his treason will directly create more danger to those who are still loyal, isn't it fair for me to execute him?" The Dai Li challenged the staunchly adamant Kyoshi Warrior. "Surely such sedition should sour and succumb to my swift and sensible sentencing."

Mayumi contemplated deeply, constantly reminding herself that this Dai Li cannot be fully trusted. It is now clear that there is no sense of amicable brotherhood between Dai Li agents. The trust they had for one another is indifferent at best and completely cynical at worst. Even the exceedingly rare bonds are either superficial or just another catalyst of betrayal, leading to more distrust. Yet, she knows that her own action in such mentally strenuous circumstances might not fare any better. She must admit that Zhao Jingzhong's action can pose a great danger. It is undeniable that criminal elements will not have the best intentions when learning forbidden bending techniques specifically used by the secret police. The Acolytes of San Bao for example, will definitely use whatever new advantage they have against the common people. But this also elicits the contention of how to handle a traitor within your rank.

It is a thought-provoking question. If there was ever a day which her close bond with the other warriors is greatly challenged by some unlikely discourse, would she be able to kill another Kyoshi Warrior to protect the rest? In hindsight, she has the luxury to not ponder on that. It is unrealistic to expect the Kyoshi Warriors to turn against their own people without justifiable reasons.

Mayumi paused, once again remembering that complacency may not be the most prudent path. Her position within the village is above a regular Kyoshi Warrior. Training and teaching the younger trainees are both rewarding and brings great sense of purpose. She taught young children into competent fighters, and it is clear that their minds are still malleable to new ideas. Long ago, her people encountered an Acolytes of San Bao who tries to influence the younger Kyoshi Warriors. It was because they are still impressionable to the outside world and were the easiest people to convert and betray the village. If this horrific event documented by Huo's diary is completely authentic and truthful to what happened at least twenty years ago, then it will only confirm one thing. Her mother and village matron, the esteemed warrior known as Akahana the Red Rose by fellow peers, has indeed stained her hands with the blood of Kyoshi Warrior trainees. Of course, those warriors were deluded by an upstart acolyte. They slandered the Avatar and intended to kill the village elders who are viewed as the greatest obstacle to this so-called Eternal Balance. If Akahana did not take quick action upon those murderous trainees, what alternative option is available? Mayumi wondered what her own mother felt when she killed other Kyoshi Warriors. What form of emotion is fathomable when trusted people committed grave treachery?

"I suppose your fellow Dai Li truly meant nothing to you?" Mayumi asked finally carefully, testing the waters.

His steps become less rigid, slightly more saunter as they travelled towards the location of the Upper Ring. Based on the lengthening silence, he doesn't appear too receptive to the idea of discussing more.

"A family must have rules and a country must have laws. If I do not enforce them rigorously, there would only be disorder. I frown upon opportunists who engage in acts of sedition, especially if they transgressed the law. Even if I had previous ties with Zhao Jingzhong, my action would still not change at all." He then turned to Mayumi, presenting his own challenging view. "If you discover that your own father committed a great unforgivable crime, and many people wish for his head to roll, what would you do?"

Mayumi refrained the sudden urge to lash back. If she was allowed to investigate the Dai Li's motivations, then his question isn't too unreasonable.

"That depends on what this unforgivable crime is. While I know someone like my father would never do heinous things, I definitely wouldn't support actions that are irredeemable." Mayumi replied reasonably.

"Then what you do if your father committed a petty crime that is against the law?" the Dai Li challenged again. "For example, he stole something. Surely you Kyoshi Warriors are sophisticated enough to handle thieves."

"Of course, stealing is wrong," Mayumi affirmed the common agreement. "But I don't see legal laws as completely perfect. My village don't have any written penal code or sophisticated jurisdiction, but that does not mean we allow transgressors to go unpunished. But please consider this Dai Li, would you arrest a poor mother who stole food just to feed the starving children?" She quickly stares right at his face, expecting some sort of wavering or reluctance to answer. Yet, her seemingly nuanced answer was met with the usual stern expression. Nothing swayed the Dai Li's staunch legalistic view of the world.

"I would enforce the appropriate punishment without exception," the Dai Li answered bluntly. This swift response surprised the Kyoshi Warrior, who thought that perhaps his bleak conscience would at least accommodate the most basic familial bonds. "How do you know for sure if this mother is trying to provide for the children and not solely for herself? I mean no disrespect, but your view of this world is mostly confined on a small insignificant island. A crime is a crime, no justification is enough to atone for the transgression unless the merit is able to balance it. Yes, the law isn't perfect, but it can still be refined and enforced more justly. As an old philosopher would say, humans are evil by nature. It is undeniable that the mortal flesh is weak, lazy and selfish. Without proper rewards and punishments, they are no different from wild animals. Even the most righteous people can die, but a legal code can last indefinitely if we allow it." Just as Mayumi was about to argue with his uncaring character, the Dai Li continued. "I have seen many things that dwell underneath this city. And the purest form of human nature is in display, after seeing many with my own eyes I say it is also the most hideous. Would you believe me that there are mothers who are willing to sell a child to buy bread? What would you do if you met them?"

Mayumi was taken aback. Even the veil disguise couldn't fully conceal the astonishment. To her, maternal love is unconditional. It is a belief she personally holds very strongly.

"I am unconvinced by your viewpoint, Dai Li," she attempted to counter, unwilling to entertain such dangerous and slanderous belief about familial bonds. "I refuse to believe that there is a single parent in this world who would willingly betray their own children."

The Dai Li sighed a little.

"Then that is just your stubbornness," he said. "Even the strongest relationships are not safe from treachery. Based on personal experience, optimism is the first step of downfall. Trusting fellow companions unconditionally will leave you unguarded against disloyalty. Such people failed to realize that there is absolutely nothing that truly inhibits a betrayal aside from flimsy integrity, empty honor and childish oaths. Such values shouldn't be trusted in the first place. Let me make this clear, even family members are not immune to scrutiny. Under the heavens, there is no such thing as real loyalty. All acts of kindness are nothing more but self-gratification. The lie of generosity is simply greed in disguise. The mask of fellowship is unsurprisingly just embellished self-interest. The delusion of true love is weak, and the most pathetic of them all."

Mayumi is once again surprised by his apathetic morality. This man is merciless when criticizing the virtues of friendship and siblinghood. She always expected Dai Li agents to be callous and uncaring. Even her own mother warned not to trust them. But this level of cynicism is certainly unanticipated from just one man. Their age is similar yet thinks so differently.

It was indeed difficult to form an argument. But in the end, Mayumi still chose to contradict his notion, especially the last part of his little speech.

"You say that love is a delusion, it seems that even traitors and bandits do not agree," her statement drew the Dai Li's immediate ire. It is a risk to anger this cold-hearted man. But considering his strong adherence to the legal code, their insignificant debate should not be justification for any consequences. The redline for the inquisitor is the divulging of state secrets, and Mayumi steers clear from that.

"Are you seriously so obtuse to the degree of entertaining such childish thoughts?" he belittled her. "That daofei woman simply seduced Jingzhong for her own gain, aiming to obtain training manuals of my embroidered uniform guards. On the other hand, the traitorous dastard should be ashamed of wearing that fine silk robe. A cultural guardian who indulges in the negligible fleshly pleasures while endangering others by fulling the wish of a seditionist is beyond redemption. I consider the prospect of capturing a traitor as absolutely pointless. Such a beguiled man is unworthy to sully my blade over. In fact, I consider myself to be unnecessary sympathetic by granting a swift end to his treasonous existence."

Mayumi cannot riposte such elaborate statement easily. Even the weakest Dai Li are at least somewhat educated, being able to speak in a degree of eloquence not too different from the literati gentry.

She may not be Shan the White Scholar, but even a fierce warrior can still rely on the eloquence of simplicity.

"You are lying to yourself, both the daofei and that treasonous Dai Li loved each other dearly, it was right in front of your eyes. If Jingzhong did not possess real affection to that woman, then he could have safely left the scene easily instead of trying to perform a rescue."

The Dai Li has a different view on the matter, mostly leaning to a more cynical perspective of Jingzhong's true motivation.

"He is enchanted by the daofei and nothing more," he countered immediately. "Not much different from the detestable Ximen Qing, Jingzhong is motivated by lust instead of genuine care. The latter's courageous deed is just a cover for his wanton desires."

"Then how do you explain the woman ending her own life voluntarily?" Mayumi pressed on, refusing to concede in this minor intellectual discussion. "Her companion died, so she decided to join him."

"She killed herself out of desperation, intending to prevent me from locating other outlaws who might have learnt my order's clandestine Earthbending technique. The real danger here is that we will not be able to confirm how extensive this skill has been circulating between various daofei groups. It would be too late if a seditionist decides to use it on my colleague."

Despite Mayumi's reasonable assumptions, the Dai Li is still stubbornly enforcing on what he believes to be the daofei's suicidal urge. It is a norm for a daofei to be part of their own secret societies, it is naturally possible that one of its members would sacrifice themself to protect the whole group from authority. But in the eyes of the inquisitor, even selfless motivations are guided with gratification. Instead of being saddened by the loss of a loved one, he sees the woman's sacrifice as nothing more but a result of adhering to convoluted code of honor practiced by petty outlaws. No room for genuine affection in his cynical observation.

"Regardless of what we both believe, that woman has successfully saved herself from an interrogation," the Dai Li said. "Unlike the seditionist that adheres to heterodox teachings, ordinary outlaws are more likely to reveal information when catechized."

"You could have used Zhao Jingzhong's life as a bargaining chip," Mayumi advised. She is fully aware that challenging a Dai Li's decision could be dangerous, which itself can give justification for an arrest. Her words must be selective to not grant any more legal grounds for an arrest. "In the very end, that outlaw and Jingzhong both truly love each other."

Yet, the Dai Li is still firm in belief in the hideous nature of humans, not willing to concede even one inch.

He sighed. "You are naiver than I think. Loyalty will fade with time eventually. There was no substance in their relationship anyway."

A sense of absolute denial can be heard from his voice. What seems evidently obvious to Mayumi is completely viewed with contempt by the cultural guardian. She wondered what kind of upbringing would create a man that would easily dismiss genuine affection as wanton carnality. It is possible that each one of them is like this. So uncaring and indifferent towards what many would consider as completely normal?

"Do not judge me for disposing a traitor, upon examining a copy of that Firebender's diary, the action of your mother is equally justified." His words hit a nerve in Mayumi. They both knew that using Akahana as an example would be very hard to refute. Yet, he has no qualm in exploiting this uncomfortable truth. "Your own leader did what she must do. For someone who has no experience in handling sedition or do not fully understand the consequences of tolerating heterodox teachings, she addressed the problem rather decisively."

"There is no honor in killing the younger sisters!" Mayumi could not hold back.

"There isn't," he affirmed this sentiment. "But traitors must be terminated in one way or another, especially if those same people are a threat to the harmony. For your mother, it does not take much convincing. The foolish writer of the diary clearly demonstrated intent to kill the elders in your village and usurp the local culture. With a band of warriors who decided to support this asinine quest, no one is more fanatical than the newly converted. Your mother's action was swift, separating duty from emotion. It was the correct course of action that have objectively prevented more losses."

Mayumi is unsure how to respond to his lack of empathy. However, it is expected that he would view the situation in this manner. Unlike a Dai Li's interaction with his fellow embroidered uniform guards, a Kyoshi Warrior view members of their sisterhood as close friends, dependable and trustworthy allies. The mere thought of betraying each other is inconceivable except for what is revealed in Huo's diary. Perhaps there are reasons why this part of the island's history could have been intentionally kept secret. Regardless, her mother and the elders of today made zero mention of this event. If she was in the same shoes as the now ruling matron, it is obvious that the trauma of killing those treasonous trainees would be more than confronting. Depending on the specific circumstances, one cannot easily slay traitors if they are close friends or family. It would even more saddening if the converted trainees were once mentored by Akahana, a sorrowful fate that cannot be described with words alone.

The Dai Li then look up to the nightly sky. It is still raining. He sighed.

"No one is safe from treachery," he stated coldly. Another challenging question is presented for Mayumi, one which they both will definitely provide a different answer. "Within the Analects of the Earth Kingdom, the first Grand Earth Sage is presented with a difficult dilemma. Many scholars since then have debated this moral conundrum for thousands of years."

"Go on," Mayumi accepted this with reluctance. She isn't well versed in Earth Kingdom philosophies or the values of the sages like Shan. But considering this Dai Li's cunning nature, he would certainly cater to her levels of understanding.

"If your father stole a koala-sheep, what would you do?"

Mayumi contemplated. Such a simple question yet already difficult to answer. Perhaps this the easier moral questions in the vast collection of Earth Sage texts.

"Perhaps I should even the playing field by simplifying this question with my own version," the Dai Li suggested. "The consequence of stealing the koala-sheep is capital punishment."

"No need to simplify," Mayumi retorted. "I will not embellish myself. If one of my family members is accused of stealing, I would certainly be hesitant to report them to the authority. How can you expect me to just betray them so easily?"

This does feel hypocritical when considering she is part of the authority on Kyoshi Island. It is inevitable that petty theft will happen. As a guardian of the village, she will obviously not be fond when the thief's family shields them.

"I see that you have a strong sense of filial piety," the Dai Li responded. "Such virtue would be approved by most Earth Sages, but I do find it predictable. Your action is supported by what you believe is right and wrong, something which is incompatible with the law."

Everyone has a different version of what they believe is a good moral standard. Some of the more cynical would be more adherent to the legal aspects of this philosophical dilemma.

"But heed my formal counsel, the truth is not meant to comfort you. It is harsh and brutal, uncaring of your own desires. Yet, all members of society must also live by it. A normal conducting society which values harmony would view theft as abhorrent. By reporting your own father for committing wrongdoing, you are showing society the standard you wish to impose on them. As a Kyoshi Warrior, I think this is reasonable." He allowed Mayumi to think underneath that straw hat and veil. The woman's silence is guarantee that she is processing what was just said. "If you do not expose your father for stealing the koala-sheep, you may be an obedient daughter, but you would also be condoning an act of theft. In my view, concealing a crime is not upright. However, respect will be granted to those who serve as witness to legal transgression, even if they must accuse their own parent."

"I may not have the intellectual understanding to present a worthwhile argument, but I can rest assured that my own father will never be the villain of the story, he of all people would never lie." Mayumi's words are not meant to convince the Dai Li. But it does aim to reinforce a more simplified yet natural view of what might be an overcomplicated situation.

The inquisitor isn't finished yet.

"For your sake, I hope your father doesn't have any damning secrets," he warned. "It would be quite ironic if one day you are forced to answer this moral conundrum with real consequences."

"Then what would you do in my place?" Mayumi challenged, unwilling to let him off the hook without her own comeback.

"I would report my father immediately, it does not matter if this particular theft is punishable by death. While I may have no faith in human nature, the law can still be relied upon." He said it with no hesitation. But the last sentence concerned her even more.

"I would rather betray the whole world than have it betray me first," he stated callously.

The rainy sky suddenly flashed with eye piercing brightness, all within a quick duration. It was a lightning, and the rain poured with even more with potency.

Mayumi stares at him, expressionless as the veil completely concealed the face. She reluctantly took another bite out of the food. Despite the Dai Li's earlier reassurance, how can she know for sure there is no poison administered in the meat?

"So... does that mean my earlier action meant absolutely nothing to you?" she questioned. What kind of person would feel no gratefulness?

He gave no answer. But it would be unrealistic to demand this man to retract the earlier statement. It takes many things to make someone distrustful and cynical, viewing all the good things in life with suspicion above all. But those who completely abandon their faith in their own kind requires more than just a string of misfortune. Mayumi would not be surprised if this form of pessimism is cultivated by years of cruel existence which feeds into his narrow view of the world.

"I never asked for your assistance in the first place," he blatantly stated, feeling no consideration to how she might react. "You are no officially part of my organization, so this merit cannot be legally acknowledged."

Mayumi is silent. She doesn't need gratitude, but such bluntness from the Dai Li uncalled for.

"That's... fine by my standards," she said. In all honesty, his leniency towards a wanted fugitive from the state of Yi is already more than what she can ask for. So long as there are no other consequences from the authority, this situation is tolerable.

But from this day onward, she would ingrain everything that was witnessed to memory. It is done out of necessity, reminding her future self of this Dai Li's hatred towards traitors. It seems he would stop at nothing to ensure the ruthless enforcement of the penal code.

Their walk resumed towards the Upper Ring. Shan is locked up inside his study. Even if she loudly stumbled through the courtyard house's front entrance, the scholar would likely ignore it.

...

The doors of the courtyard house opened. As Mayumi walked through, she didn't even try to conceal her armor, knowing that Shan is confining himself to solitude. The scholar's silhouette remains still like stone, working on calligraphy and other works of a skilled literati. Earlier today, he chose to not speak a single word after she revealed previous acquaintance with Lady Te, which confirms his suspicion that the inkstone gift is not Te Gaogui's sole idea.

It's rather incredible how he still hasn't fired her for overstepping this bound. Of all the scholars of this world, those who subscribe to the legalistic mindset will always be more suspicious of their retainers, even the smallest details can be viewed with scrutiny. It will certainly require tremendous effort to reconstruct the already miniscule trust they once had.

Upon seeing the unimpressive yet rather warming welcome of her own living quarter, she slumped to the floor, feeling more tired than usual. She didn't even exert much today, yet the body felt it has depleted more energy than usual. Mayumi made a loud frustrated sigh, looking at the ceiling and closing her eyes. After sitting on a patch of dried hay, she pulled out Huo's diary from a hiding spot under the repaired table and flipped through the pages. This is a process that is repeated every night, examining the contents over and over again.

No matter how many times Mayumi read the words written by Huo's mother, the entries are still the same. The acolyte who first ventured onto Kyoshi Island successfully converted a group of trainees who became fanatics. They abandoned the veneration of Avatar Kyoshi to serve this so-called 'Master', deciding to bring this Eternal Balance to their home and people. Since the charlatan promised great rewards, it enticed the malleable minds. Those impressionable teens may be young and naive. But comparing them to most soldiers trained in conventional ways, these girls are already capable of using weapons in a proficient manner.

A Kyoshi Warrior begins training at a very young age, many already grasped the knowledge of using war fans right after they learnt how talk. Swordsmanship is further refined as they enter their teenage years. By that age, these mere trainees are already more skillful than regular non-bending soldiers who only has a few years of training at most.

The main duty of being a disciple of Avatar Kyoshi is to protect the island and its people, which are all her sacred legacies. Since its inception, the sisterhood has always remained strong. Their fighting formations works splendidly when a group of them are all focused on both mind and spirit. Working together as one, they can be almost unstoppable. Even within the newest generation, this bond never changed. Despite not being related by blood, their camaraderie is more than just empty words or pointless gestures. As people who grew up together, trust is never an issue. In her younger days, she would even babysit Kazuki before Satchiko's birth, or the many times when she and Orihime would steal pastries from the grumpy innkeeper and then faced the punishment together after being caught.

She admits that personal emotions can influence decision making. Which is why it is still difficult to believe what was written in this diary. During her mother's youth, Akahana personally killed the trainees who are hellbent on harming the village elders. It might be unbelievable that the newly converted fanatics would wish to slay their own neighbors so easily, but her past interactions with these cultists suggests that this is reasonably common. Their zealotry and fierce devotion to the Eternal Balance is used to justify whatever that is completely horrendous when compared to conventional morality. This power of the cult also highlighted the immense influence that the 'Master' can exert despite not being physically present. The mind is both powerful and dangerous. If one acolyte wishes to make a group of people kneel before the 'Master', they must first convert individuals who would encourage their family and friends to also submit. Usurping and replacing a regional culture with the veneration of the Eternal Balance cannot be achieved without recruiting some of the locals to the cause, especially if they are promised otherworldly rewards that can be obtained by abandoning their traditional beliefs and ancestors. If this is the tactic employed to harm Kyoshi Island, then Akahana was forced into a very unfavorable position. If those converted trainees refuse to negotiate, then sparing their lives would mean endangering the ones they wish to murder. But not even the usually stern matron would willingly commit such an act especially during the youthful days.

Mayumi contemplated this. She would never doubt her friends. Rightfully, there is absolutely no reason to. The mere thought of even harming them is also unimaginable for someone who instructs others in the dojo.

All of this combined is the reason why the diary's revelations felt so incredulous. How did Akahana ever overcome what she did? And how was she chosen to be the successor of the last matron despite this action? The matron of the village's sole purpose is to lead the others and organize the defense. If the trainees described in the entries have indeed betrayed the villagers and decided to kill the elders, her mother would have at least tried to subdue them before employing the unimaginable last resort, killing the traitors.

Mayumi sighed again. This diary is written from the perspective of the same person who tried to usurp the local culture, which is why there will be bias injected into the pages. But what is described in the entries clearly states that the Kyoshi Warrior who served as a 'guide' to the writer, deliberately enacted violence upon the people who tried to assassinate the village elders. If Akahana chose to bury this tragic event of their island's past, then it's highly possible that the senior members of her village is at least somewhat aware of what happened, and that includes Kazuki's late mother Ubume.

There is one stark contrast she possesses, a quality that a Dai Li would not tolerate. In the unlikely event that one of her comrades have indeed demonstrated perfidious acts that would endanger the village, she would have a hard time overcoming the emotional and spirituel obstacle to act decisively. All the other Kyoshi Warriors are also her sisters, even if they do not have any blood ties. The grave sin of sororicide is not just a moral and mental transgression. But it would clearly displease Avatar Kyoshi herself. The elusive and cunning brocade guards would have no qualm about this matter. But then again, how many of them even venerate their founder? It would be impressive if they are even aware of her role in creating the Dai Li.

Her eyes became sleepy just as she flipped halfway through the book. It's just too taxing to continue. After replacing the diary back to the hiding spot, she makes sure to get enough rest. Appearing too tired tomorrow might incur suspicion.

...

Mayumi maintained a respectful distance as Shan lectures Satchiko on the basic fundamentals of writing a poem. Since this part of the literacy is a great obstacle for the young knucklehead, the scholar decided to enforce a strict regime of studying while also trying his best to advance the lacking Earthbending.

Although her sister has somewhat progressed in the world of books and brushes, Earthbending has frustratingly showed no signs of progress. The tutor maintained a strict and orthodox method of teaching, scrolls used in the lesson shows clear steps to mastering the most basic forms. One such example is to draw earth from the ground into a ball and punch it towards a target. Being a perfectionist, Shan is not concerned that Satchiko would tear into the courtyard lawn. He has no reasons to, as the pupil still couldn't even bend a small earth disc. With only pebbles as the only usable projectiles, not even the grass will fear her effort.

For a Zhuangyuan rank scholar, there is actually more at stake than his little garden. Failure to cultivate an adequate student would shine a light on his poor role as an educator, which is also a milestone for an accomplished scholar. In a society that highly values the scholarly gentry, a member of the esteemed literati class must demonstrate their proficiency in high culture and impeccable societal conduct. Shan's reputation is walking a tightrope by accepting Satchiko as a student. The Upper Ring nobles are notorious when it comes to feeding unfavorable rumors. That impeccable prestige hard fought by the White Scholar will wither if he does not tread carefully.

"That will be enough for today," Shan stated in the nonchalant voice. Satchiko bowed and exited the courtyard through the front gate. The progress of today is not terrible, but definitely nowhere near what the White Scholar would hope for. He masked whatever disappointment he had in a flawless manner, clearly uncertain about this predicament. Perhaps if he had known about this abnormally difficult hurdle, maybe he would have reconsidered their previous arrangement.

Mayumi arrived to clear away the table. Ever since the Te clan gifted him that exquisite inkstone, Shan has never used it once. Of course, he is wary of her connection to Te Gaogui. Since her minor role in this matter is already discovered, the scholar's trust has seriously been more reserved than normal. A simple clay bowl is now used to store the ink, a defiance against this overstepping of office by the retainer.

"Your tea, exactly like how you wanted," Mayumi placed a tray of a very specific type of oolong brew. Today in particular, Shan's request is more detailed. Everything to the brewing time for the kettle and the quantity of water is stated, leaving little room for maneuvering. This is obviously a reaction to Mayumi's secret contact with Te Gaogui, another subtle warning for her to perform a role without fault.

As usual, the scholar poured his own cup. After tasting it, there are no sense of penchant in his face. Doubt greatly grips his mind as he now has a hard time even trusting the swordswoman on the most basic level. For legalist scholars are cautious towards the intention of others, especially the people they employ. The philosophical tenet of this belief also highlighted the greedy nature of humanity. Government ministers and courtiers all harbor their own interests that may or may not be beneficial to the ruler. While it may be rather harsh to apply this way of thinking to normal life, scholars of such school of thought are serious when discovering retainers who actively oversteps their assigned office.

Shan suddenly asked. "Do you ever wonder why Te Gaogui is here and not in Zigan? As a noblewoman from a distant land. wouldn't it be more fitting remain close to homeland?"

Mayumi expected that he to first address her act of overstepping bounds. Being an expert in political science, Shan isn't asking this due to his own ignorance. There is something else this legalist is trying to achieve here. A test perhaps.

"White Scholar, my role is a swordswoman, I don't think it is my job to understand this," Mayumi responded in a simple manner.

However, both of them are aware that isn't the case. A form of understanding is reached without even conveying them with blunt words. The scholar does not mind if she has some superficial understanding towards the political nature of regional patrimonialism. He would even occasionally explain the complicated Ba Sing Se clan politics when dealing with aristocrats. This is a test of attentiveness.

"Correct, and it would also be improper for a scholar to teach a competent swordswoman how to hold a weapon, that too is overstepping bounds," Shan said in a very reasonable manner, indicating that he would punish himself should he also overstep the station. "Perhaps I may enlighten you on what Te Gaogui is trying to achieve."

Mayumi tensed up. He is already aware that she might have some interactions with Lady Te. Yet, it would be dishonest to claim that she does not wish to understand the true motive behind this marriage alliance arranged by Han Fei and Te Laoye.

"That... sure, I don't mind hearing it." She tried to sound disinterested, but to completely no avail.

Shan opened his paper fan and strolled over to the giant stack of book in the courtyard. Without even looking, his spare hand quickly pulled a text from the pile without crumbing the whole structure. A rather effortless act.

The document in question is a geography book, one written by an Earth Sage geomancer. The scholar opened it up to a specific page in a very familiar manner. He displayed the content on the stone table, showing Mayumi a page on a particular region of the continent.

"The land of Zigan is quite special," he began. "Takeko, what do soldiers eat?"

"Food," she answered, unsure what direction this scholar taking.

"Indeed, without food, even the strongest army will be defeated without fighting, which is why the scrabbling warlords outside the walls are keen to secure stable food source for their armies."

Many states across the Earth Kingdom have varying degrees of agricultural output. Some lands are fertile with abundance of resources while others are impoverished and plagued by scarcity. Ba Sing Se's military advantage over the smaller states can be attributed with its massive farmlands, which allows the city to field larger armies and build better infrastructure. As for the warlords, their choices are limited.

"The land of Zigan is surrounded by three powerful states, with the northern one being more powerful." Shan picked up a brush and drew a simple sketch, depicting one small piece of land bordered by three bigger entities. "Three powerful warlords completely enveloping one small county. Despite all of Lord Te's arrogance, I can at least grant him a pass for keeping his little domain from being taken." It is clear that Shan has a disdain for the clan leader. Yet, this staunch legalist acts objectively when analyzing a person's governing performance. Te Laoye may be a bitter old man who contested Shan's Keju essay results, but not all nobles are completely incompetent.

"Zigan is different from its neighbors. Its land is fertile, and the people is plentiful and educated. When under competent leadership, the population is exceptionally high despite the land's smaller scale. Vital reforms by former governor Te Sihung brought development to a once insignificant village, the agricultural output of the land ensure a rapid population growth, their strong learning institution and public facilities rivals that of Ba Sing Se. There are no shortages of skillful scholars and artisans in the Te clan's domain, yours truly would even daringly claim that their artistic development may even be superior in some fields."

"So, what is the problem?" Mayumi asked. All Shan did is paint a picture of a small state that has better cultural development than its neighbors.

"The problem is that with all these advantages, other warlords covet its possession," Shan's face grew more serious. He pointed at various location across the map, aiming at the three states that covers Zigan on all sides. "The Zigan commandery is caught in the middle of three warring factions. Each one of them can easily field a hundred thousand men at ease, intending to attain rulership over the other two. But whenever one of them becomes too powerful, the rest will form a temporary alliance to rebalance the power. So far, their conflict has been relegated to stalemates, as none of them can become powerful enough to destroy the others."

Mayumi caught on, slowly realizing what is troubling Te Gaogui's people.

"By what you are saying, if one of them can own Zigan commandery, the warlord in question can gain another advantage to break this impasse." Her words received Shan's confirmation.

"Zigan may be small, but it has an abundant farmland. Its cities are built with extensive infrastructure and serves as a hub for history and culture. But because it also controls major river crossings, the neighboring warlords would not sit idle as their rivals also covet to own this piece of land." Shan then detailed the yearly agricultural output and population. With these two important resources, whoever can control Zigan can not only provide more food supplies for their armies, but their military itself will grow exponentially from a fresh pool of potential conscripts. Additionally, controlling the important river crossing meant also gaining access to the water source that flows into all three states. It is a powerful leverage if one of the factions can harness it. These are only way to secure the regional advantage. To secure this vital place that connects the three warring states, victory is within grasp.

Mayumi then inquired how any of this relates to Te Gaogui's plight, specifically, the motive behind everything she is trying to accomplish. The answer is rather dire.

"Simple, Zigan simply cannot defend itself militarily," Shan stated. "Although their people are exceptionally refined in artistic values and scholarly ways, their army is not fit to fight their neighbors. Candidly, their entire governing system of creating a rich cultural hub does not bode well with raising armies with strong martial prowess. So far, they have remained neutral in order to save themselves from an invasion. It is still walking a tightrope of balance. If one warlord tries to invade, the other two will certainly not let it happen easily. Such pitiful existence is not fit for anyone. However, what if people of Zigan can somehow dig themselves out of this hopeless predicament? What if they can find a powerful ally which can come to their aid?"

Shan is hinting at Ba Sing Se, by far the most powerful Earth Kingdom state in a continent filled with turmoil and chaos. So far, only the great city of Omashu can rival its military might.

This city on the north of the continent has been spared from the constant warring of the now fractured Earth Kingdom, but what if its leaders are willing to intervene in the petty conflicts and give Zigan a helping hand? Such scenario, no matter how unlikely, can indeed turn the situation in favor of the Te clan. Interference by another powerful entity can weaken the other three warlords, ensuring that their militaries are not fully focused on Zigan. Historical examples are proof that such audacious plan by a single individual is not outside the realm of plausibility. If the game is played carefully, the land of Zigan might even be the sole victor in the conflict, an unlikely but possible outcome.

"So, this is why she wants to become Zhuangyuan," Mayumi finally understood. "It's about influencing the city's decision making by becoming a high ranking official."

"Indeed, and since she cannot accomplish that, Te Gaogui can only explore the alternative, which is forming a marriage alliance with the Zhuangyuan." Shan further explained the intricate nature of marriage alliances. It is a practice by two interest groups to achieve their respective objective by forming a guaranteed pact. The same logic can also be applied to the conflict that threatens the commandery of Zigan. "The warlords are not fools either. It wouldn't be a surprise if there were attempts in the past to arrange a political marriage between one of their sons with the sole heiress of Zigan, which can secure their own power across that important piece of land as well as deterring the other two warlords from intervening militarily due to preestablished cultural norms. There are valid reasons for Te Gaogui to be relocated here in Ba Sing Se. My mentor Han Fei, museum director of the royal palace, is no small bureaucrat. Yours truly's future role in the administration also opens the opportunity to shape the city's most important decisions. Arranging a union between me and Te Gaogui can achieve two things. First, it effectively ensures that the warlords can no longer pressure the clan elder into a political marriage with one of their own sons, preventing Zigan from being taken using political means. Second, this link between the Te clan and Ba Sing Se can signal a beginning of a possible alliance. If the land of Zigan is invaded with military might, the threat of this city alone can make the warlords hesitant to act too aggressively."

Mayumi nodded in affirmation. This whole situation is too complicated for her to even begin processing. But what is important here is to acknowledge the gravity of the Te clan's predicament. This marriage alliance isn't some petty desire motivated by selfishness. The various actions can influence the lives of countless. If Zigan is invaded, its military will not be enough to fend off the aggressors. The livelihood of its inhabitants will be placed into jeopardy as the warlord armies march unopposed. It is now clear that Lady Te was serious when claiming no cost is too great when helping her people.

"But why did your mentor agree to this?" Mayumi asked. "How does he benefit from this arrangement?"

Shan cannot give a definitive answer. He admitted to personally not understand the wisdom of his mentor.

"It would be unwise to investigate, but my mentor always plans five steps ahead of anyone else," Shan ended this discussion about the outgoing Han Fei. To a certain degree, even Mayumi can feel the museum director's affable mannerism is a bit too good to be true. Obviously, he will not tell his pupil everything about whatever scheme that is conjured with this marriage alliance.

Shan redirected the conversation back to the main topic, specifically about the motive of Te Gaogui. He aims to clarify that he does intend to belittle that noblewoman nor the action.

"In many ways I do sympathize, for she too wishes to escape the predestined drawbacks of clan patrimonialism," Shan emphasized his own position, eliciting how forming marriage alliances can also serve to disrupt personal interests in exchange for certain political benefits. "I respect anyone who wish to obtain their goals with merit alone without using familial connections. Entering the world of petty politics between various major households can bring its own hinderance, especially since forging familial ties might also impede your own ambitions. I in no way intend to look down on such an individual."

He sighed as she listened carefully. This is believable despite his harshness. Mayumi recognizes that Shan is known to disdain the aristocracy, but he is also capable of respecting others he may not share the same opinion. The travelling Fire Nation poet Seonbi and Zigan's heiress Te Gaogui are just two examples.

"Me and my mentor may share the same school of thought, endorsing legalism above patrimonial lineages, yet he is willing to play the same game as the petty nobles."

The difference of age also highlighted their varied attitude towards how to better promote a more meritocratic legalism in governance. While Shan remains sharp tongued and scathing towards the petty aristocrats who seeks to gain a Zhuangyuan's favor, Han Fei adapted a rather pragmatic approach. The latter has no qualm when partaking in the activities of the Upper Ring, his presence alone makes nobles willingly ingratiate themselves before this esteemed government official. Even the most conservative mainstream Earth Sages can overlook his scholarly origin hailing from the hated legalism, a philosophy that is frowned upon by the majority of the scholarly gentry, it is the bane of the noble elites and their ever so cherished family lineages.

"The will of my mentor cannot be opposed easily," Shan said. "It is unfortunate that I cannot overturn this. But I find rather erroneous when someone decided to meddle in this marriage alliance without the consent of yours truly."

Mayumi dare not to look directly at his eyes. Throughout this entire time, the White Scholar made it crystal clear that he disdains close association with a noble clan. All the proposal letters from Upper Ring nobles are received with indifference, as an arranged marriage is just another form of political power play, aiming to secure a future high ranking official's loyalty to benefit their own interests. He also intends to remain independent from the petty clan politics plaguing the Upper Ring, fully committed on his own merit as a prestigious scholar.

It is a miracle that Shan has still yet to expel her from working as a bodyguard. But knowing the rather cynical nature of legalism, those who endorse it do not necessarily demonstrate compassion just because of ancient rites or virtues espoused by the first Grand Earth Sage. Mayumi is also aware that Shan cannot afford to relieve her of duty. His reputation must remain impeccable. Dismissing a talented retainer will stain his perfect image amongst the Upper Ring, which will naturally be used as another point of infestation to garner more rumors about this scholar.

Mayumi chose her words carefully. In the end, she decided to be direct and honest, pleasantries practiced by the Upper Ring citizens will only be reproached further.

"I know you don't need my apology," she stated. "My individual action has indeed transgressed this role."

His deepening silence is an assurance that this answer is at least tolerated. Some convoluted excuse would only further raise suspicion.

She continued, testing the waters carefully. "To be fully candid, I only met Lady Te recently. She was generous enough to assist me, so I reciprocated with courtesy."

"So you decided to act as a mole here?" he demanded.

There was a moment of silence, Mayumi starred at a ground as she tries to piece together an appropriate response. Although her action has little effect on Han Fei's will, the specificality of Lady Te's gift has warranted the suspicion of Shan. How convenient it was to have an inkstone as a present when he just so happens to lose the previous one? While most aristocrats will applaud their retainers for their bold move which benefited their employer, legalist scholars do not allow such transgression to just go on unnoticed. People like Shan are immediately alarmed by this breach of protocol, as overstepping of a person's office may give rise to potential disloyalty.

"Yes," Mayumi chose to be blunt and affirm his suspicion. "I decided to repay Lady Te's friendship by suggesting an idea for the gift."

Shan fanned himself, quietly processing this information. He is displeased even more.

"Takeko, yours truly has no desire to form any relations with Te Gaogui or the Te clan, but the will of my mentor cannot be challenged," he turned to her with a critical expression. "I find it rather hypocritical that you chose to endorse this union out of Te Gaogui's sake, for it is more appropriate to remain neutral in this matter."

Mayumi cannot form a good counter against this. She detests arranged marriages, seeing it as insincere and only used to achieve other goals besides the happiness of the two individuals in question. Perhaps her aid to Lady Te is out of line considering that Shan has no say in this. Although it is Han Fei and Te Laoye that holds the true power, Mayumi's own ploy is the same as endorsing the artificial union between two living people, not much different from those who tried to do the same thing to her. In hindsight, this harmless little advise on preparing a good gift for Shan has backfired, but worse, it is indeed a rather hypocritical act, and she acknowledges this.

"Your points are valid," Mayumi admitted with great difficulty.

Shan then closed his fan, taking another sip of tea in the meanwhile.

"Very well then, see that such contravening act will not occur again," he stated in a disinterested voice of a gentlemen. Shan then returned to main room, once again confined to the study chamber. Mayumi stood on the grass slightly dumbfounded. Indeed, reducing any flowery words do work better on those who are tired of certain societal behaviors. But even she was a bit caught off guard by how he didn't even demonstrate a bit of anger over this debacle. Not even a punishment? Last time she poured the wrong type of tea and the consequences at least have the courage to exist.

Her palm touches the handle of the dao, the blade that Shan brought. Despite being the procurer of this weapon, the White Scholar has not said a single word about how to use it. He perhaps expected that someone like Mayumi can wield it competently without listening to useless nagging from a scholar that wields a brush. This once again ties into the idea of respecting one's own station, a tenet preached by those with legalistic tendency.

"You are strange man Shan," she uttered quietly. "A strange man indeed."

There was no forgiveness. The lack of any retribution over secretly convening with Te Gaogui felt unnatural. It might not be an issue if it's a regular household that is lenient towards retainers, but this is different. Mayumi isn't fully ignorant about scholars and sages that follows a more legalistic mindset. All these days in Ba Sing Se made her a bit more familiar towards this less popular school of thought. The philosophy known as Fajia legalism endorses strict laws and the strengthening of the state, it is often considered rather tyrannical due to its cynical view towards human nature. There is a heavy emphasis on giving out reward and punishment based on merit. Furthermore, the overstepping of office is viewed as the first step towards disorder, an act that must be penalized.

If Shan simply issued some form of light punishment like a reasonable and symbolic cut in the salary, then it ironically more reassuring for Mayumi. Despite being an accomplished warrior who trained her whole life, she is a bit anxious at this unpredictable scholar. There are some situations that being a strong fighter would have absolutely no use, especially in this city of walls and secrets. She can only hope that her own sister does not stumble into another unsalvageable mess that could incur misfortune in the foreseeable future.

...

Her eyes don't always play tricks, but she could have sworn that those faraway green dots are moving.

Satchiko stood still and observed a distant segment of the wall. The sunset behind that part of the bastion made it difficult to look at the tiny moving specs that are slowly climbing up the stone surfaces. She has been here for longer than a month, understanding that her view of the world has evolved significantly since leaving the confines of a small island.

The sheer size of these gigantic earth fortifications never ceased to amaze her. Not only does it require unimaginable labor to construct, but it also expanded her own knowledge on what is and isn't possible.

But what is happening before her eyes felt even more inconceivable. It seems that those tiny faraway dots are people physically climbing the walls.

End of chapter notes:

-Some quotes of the famous novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms are used to make this chapter.

-Some of the most defining highlights of famous philosopher Xun Zi is also used.

-The 'Touch of Death' is not a canon technique in ATLA, but it is linked to the real-life version of chi-blocking. Despite no scientific evidence to support its lethality, I would strongly advise against randomly poking the body with great force, especially not on the paths of the cardiovascular system. All potential injuries, nerve damages and deaths incurred by asinine experiments are not liable to the writer of this fanfiction.
