Jamie smiled over his cup of coffee and watched as Eddie slept on the left side of their
bed. The blanket had been tossed off and she was lying on her left side with her right
arm draped over the small baby bump that was just becoming noticeable. Taking another
sip of his coffee, he watched her sleep a moment longer before stepping into the room
and sitting on the bed next to her. Setting his cup of coffee on the side table, he leaned
over her and brushed a stray piece of blond hair away from her forehead. Leaning down
further, he brushed a gentle kiss against her lips and she kissed him back. Pulling away
as she opened her eyes, she scrunched up her nose.
"Ugh, Reagan, you taste like coffee. Go brush your teeth."
Jamie feigned being hurt and put a hand to his chest.
"Ouch babe. That hurts. I think you injured my pride a little bit."
He scooted over slightly and watched as she slowly sat up and swung her legs over the
side of the bed. There were few things he'd crossed off the list of not eating for the time
being, because the smell caused Eddie to become nauseous and lose the little food she
did get down as of late. The morning sickness had been bad to say the least. He put a
hand on the small of her back when he saw her sway a bit.
"Stay sitting. If it the dizziness gets worse I want you to lie down. I'll got get you a cool
cloth. Just close your eyes and take deep slow deep breaths in and out. There you. I'll be
right back."
Swallowing, Eddie closed her eyes. The dizzy spells came in waves sometimes. Just
yesterday as she was coming out of the ladies locker room at the precinct at the end of
her tour riding a desk, she was so dizzy her vision had blurred causing her to reach to
steady herself on something. She hadn't realized she was almost blacking out until she'd
felt a couple of sets of hands reach out and steady her. She'd been lowered to her chair
at her desk. She remembered a strong and gentle pair of hands on her shoulders and
realized they were Jamie's. He'd been so worried about her after coming in from tour to
find her hunched over, her head between her knees trying to regain her equilibrium.
Jamie snapped Eddie from her thoughts as he placed a cool washcloth against the back
of her neck. Eddie felt light pressure on the back of her neck as Jamie place a left hand
on it.
"How do you feel? When you open your eyes can you see?"
The dizziness was still present but it was backing off slightly, however, the blurriness in
her eyes stayed.
"The dizziness is a little less, but its hard to see. It's blurry. Much like it was yesterday.
Their just fuzzy images the things I do see. Right now you are just a fuzzy outline. Like
your out of focus. Jamie I don't like this."
Jamie went out of the room for a minute and dialed her doctor and checked on Ellie who
was playing in her playpen in the living room.
"Dada."
Jamie waved his hand and wiggled his fingers at Ellie as he held the bottom of his phone
towards the ceiling.
"Hi baby. Yes Jamie Reagan. I'm calling for my wife Eddie. She's experiencing some
really bad bouts of dizziness. To the point where her vision is getting blurry. We were
just in the ER for it yesterday afternoon. Yes I'll hold."
Jamie checked on Ellie who was now fast asleep in her playpen with a toy in her hand.
She could sleep through everything now. The doorbell didn't even startle her. The hair on
the back of Jamie's neck stood on end when he heard Eddie call out for him.
"Jamie!"
He double checked that Ellie was still sleeping and quickly made his way to the bedroom.
Eddie was slumped over on the bed, something was wrong.
"Eddie? Sweetheart? Talk to me babe. What's wrong?"
Eddie only let out a groan for an answer. As gently and as quickly as he could, he put
Eddie's legs up on the bed and turned her onto her side, putting a pillow between her
knees. He tried again to rouse her.
"Eddie? Talk to me babe. Are you ok?"
He'd forgotten he was still on the phone with Eddie's doctor's office. He quickly hung up
and called 9-1-1.
"My name is Officer Jamie Reagan. I need a bus to 345 East 57th street. My wife is
unconscious and I can't wake her."
Jamie did his best to keep trying to rouse Eddie. He made a fist and rubbed Eddie's chest
with it. This only elicited another groan from her, but she didn't open her eyes.
"Come on Eddie. Wake up baby."
He'd hung up with 9-1-1 and dialed Linda. He gave a relieved sigh when she picked up.
"Hello? Jamie? Is everything ok?"
Jamie shook his head no and explain the situation.
"No. I'm wait for an ambulance to arrive at our apartment. I can't wake Eddie up. Can
you come over and watch Ellie for us?"
He listened for Linda's response.
"Yeah I'll be right over. Did you try rubbing her chest with your fist?"
Jamie nodded and responded.
"I did. But she just groaned. She didn't open her eyes."
Jamie hung up the phone with Linda and ran a hand through Eddie messy blond hair.
"Come on baby wake up. What happened?"
No matter how much pleading he did, she didn't open her eyes. He didn't like begging or
pleading. But this was his wife, his lover, his everything in he universe. If he lost her and
the baby, he didn't know how he was going to raise Ellie by himself. He was startled out
of his thoughts when he heard a loud knocking on the apartment door and then
someone's voice.
"FDNY. Did someone call for paramedics?"
Jamie looked through the lookout hole in the door and then opened the door wide the let
the paramedics and Linda in. She sat down on the couch and looked into the playpen.
Ellie was asleep, totally oblivious to what was happening with her mother in the other
room. Jamie turned back to Linda and Ellie. But Linda waved at him.
"I've got her Jamie. Go be with your wife. She needs you right. We'll be fine."
Jamie rushed out the door behind the paramedics, shutting it behind him. This was
turning into a nightmare.
To Be continued…
A/N: Sorry for the cliffhanger everyone. But Eddie and the baby will be just fine. I've still
got big plans for this story.
