Jamie was trying to wrap his brain around what the doctor had just told him. Eddie was
in some sort of a coma. They weren't exactly sure what caused it and were running more
tests. Reaching over, Jamie pushed back a strand of blonde hair out of Eddie's face.
Suddenly his mind went back to Ellie at home with Linda. She couldn't watch her
indefinitely. But he couldn't exactly bring her to the hospital to see Eddie either because
of her compromised immune system. Sighing, he pressed a kiss to her forehead and
spoke to her.
"Eddie, sweetheart, what happened? I know this pregnancy is new and its been difficult
with the morning sickness, but we can get through this together. What do you think this
baby will be? A boy? Or a girl?"
Jamie already missed hearing Eddie's voice. He imagines her answer and smiles.
"A girl? Good answer. Two girls to spoil. I think I should win a trophy for best dad."
Smoothing another piece of hair out of her eyes, Jamie sighed, watching the machines
measuring each of her vitals. She'd been given nasal oxygen and was hooked up to a
heart monitor. His right hand roamed the blanket until it found the slight swell of her
lower abdomen. The sound of the door opening made him look over his shoulder.
"Jamie? How is she?"
Jamie found it was Erin and went to get up.
"No change. Her breathing, her heart rate, all her vital systems are steady. I wish I knew
what was going on. All I can do is keep watch and its tearing me apart Erin. Eddie means
everything to me. Her, Ellie and the baby. The three of them. I don't know what I'd do if
I lost all three of them."
Erin placed a cup of coffee in Jamie's left hand, and he took it appreciatively.
"Jamie. Eddie's strong. She'll make it through this. She's fought off perps twice her size.
She fought so hard to get Ellie. I know you didn't believe in her at first. But Eddie got
attached to Ellie because she saw something that you didn't."
Jamie furrowed his eyebrows.
"It's not that I didn't believe in her Erin. I just like to distance myself from situations. I
had hoped Ellie would go to a good home. But when Eddie and I found out that Ellie had
a heart condition and that she was going through foster family's like water, I got worried.
Ellie was alone. She started to grow on me. The more time I spent with her, the more I
came to feel like she was my own daughter."
Erin could see how conflicted Jamie was. Her brother had been through so much in the
last year and a half. Ellie was a beautiful little girl that was growing up fast. Now they
had a baby on the way and would be juggling two kids.
"For the record Jamie, I think this baby will be a girl too. Everyone thought I was going
to have a boy, even you Jamie."
Jamie smirked at the thought.
"Well, you were carrying low Erin. The doctor did say they thought they saw something
indicating that the baby would've been a boy."
Now it was Erin's turn to smirk. Shaking her head she let her mind wander as she
answered Jamie.
"Sometimes I wonder where I'd be if I'd had a boy. There wouldn't have been so many
slammed doors in the house."
Jamie nodded and took a sip of his coffee. He felt the caffeine hit him instantly. Giving
his tired eyes the boost it needed.
"Good point sis. Nicky's a good kid Erin. It takes a village. I guess all I can do is keep
watch. The doc said that Eddie needs an MRI, but with her being pregnant its not a
possibility right now."
Erin pulled Jamie into a hug and gave Eddie's hand a squeeze.
"You fight Eddie. We're all here for you."
Letting go of Erin, Jamie took his seat next to Eddie's bed and kissed her forehead. No
sooner had Erin left that a doctor and a few nurses came into the room. Jamie pushed
his chair away from the bed and watched one of the doctors.
"You don't have to stay in the room if you don't want to Jamie. We're going to change
out her catheter and change her adult diaper."
Jamie shook his head and stayed. He wasn't going to leave Eddie with strangers,
regardless if they were doctors and nurses.
"I'll stay. We promised to take care of each other in sickness and in health. She's sick so
I'm supposed to take care of her. I'm background noise."
Jamie took a framed photo of Eddie with Ellie out of a bag he'd brought with him. Placing
it on the stand next to the bed he smiled. It was one of his favorites. She was in her
uniform and holding a newborn Ellie. She had the proud smile of a new mother. He took
out another photo, this time it was him and Eddie in their uniforms both holding Ellie. He
placed it next to the other one. The nurses and doctors had finished changing out the
catheter and diaper for new one's. Now it was only one doctor. Eddies OB. Doctor
Swanson. She rolled over an ultrasound machine and turned it on carefully pushing the
covers back, then Eddie's hospital gown just far enough to expose part of her lower
abdomen leaving the blanket covering her legs.
"Ok, let's see how your little one is doing here."
Moving the wander Doctor Swanson nodded and Jamie listened the baby's heart beat.
"Is the baby's heartbeat supposed to be that fast?"
Doctor Swanson nodded and smiled.
"Yes. The baby is perfectly healthy. Your baby is the size of an orange right now. Would
you like to know the sex?"
Jamie shook his head and looked away from the screen.
"No. I want to wait until Eddie's awake."
Doctor Swanson gave him a confused look.
"Are you sure? The baby is at a perfect angle where I can get a good look."
Jamie shook his head no and squeezed Eddie's hand.
"I'm sure. I want Eddie to know the answer too. It wouldn't be fair for her to hear it from
me. She'd feel left out."
Doctor Swanson nodded and turned off the ultrasound machine, rolling it away.
"Ok dad. Your little one is very healthy. I meant to ask you; Ellie must be getting so big
by now. How old is she?"
Jamie smiled and ran a finger over the photo of Eddie and Ellie.
"She's 18 months. She's such a daddy's girl."
Doctor Swanson smiled and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Feel free to call me if you feel Eddie needs something. I'm just a phone call away. We're
hoping that she'll wake up on her own. We don't want to have to intubate."
Jamie understood some of the terminology that Doctor Swanson was using, but not
everything.
"Thanks doc."
Jamie then resumed his place at Eddie's side. All he could do for now was keep watch.
He was her nightwatchman after all.
To Be Continued…
A/N: Sorry for the delay in updating this. I got so caught up in writing Unknown
Territory. I'm hoping to make this fic at least 20 chapters. I've got it planned out on
paper. Just need to type it up.
