Eagerly awaiting her suitor, John's arrival, Kitty had dressed in her finest light blue gown, adorned her ears with the earrings John had gifted her, and styled her hair in a fashion she knew he admired. Despite the excitement of John's meeting with her father to seek permission to court her, dread filled Kitty as she contemplated what Mr. Bennet might say. Known for taking pleasure in others' follies, often at their expense, Kitty paced back and forth, fearing that her father might mock poor John in his usual teasing manner.

Finally, Mrs. Hills announced John's arrival, and Kitty couldn't help but feel joy surge through her—until she noticed the worried expression on his face. "What is wrong?" asked Kitty with trepidation.

John nervously took her hand and kissed it before answering, "It's nothing my dear - only that we received news this morning that one of our maids has gone missing after stealing some rather expensive and irreplaceable family heirlooms." He looked at the chain around Kitty's neck longingly and said, "One of them was meant to be given to my future wife – I know it would have suited you perfectly."

Kitty felt heat rush through her body as she suddenly became aware of John's intense gaze upon her. Unable to maintain eye contact, she shyly averted her eyes and blushed.

"I'm sure you'll find that maid soon and recover your family heirlooms. Though I believe I already have the most precious one." She replied, glancing at him.

John felt his heart skip a beat as he replied nervously. "Well, father has sent a Bow Street Runner to search for her. Hopefully, he'll find her in time before she sells any of the stolen goods."

As Lydia descended the stairs, she overheard their conversation and inquired, "What did that maid look like?"

John fixed Lydia with an irritated look before greeting her. He had always found her to be a brash young lady who had influenced Catherine into similar behavior in the past. Although Charlotte and everyone else assured him that Lydia had reformed her ways, he still believed that this creature could never change completely. Despite his doubts, as long as she didn't do anything to ruin Catherine's reputation, he would have to tolerate her as part of his family.

John inhaled deeply before replying, "She was a young woman with brown hair and eyes and plain features. Mother employed her only a few months ago." Lydia's gaze widened in recognition and quickly shifted away as she recalled the maid she had seen with Mr. Glouding at Lucas's house party. She had a similar appearance. Lydia was about to ask more questions when Mrs. Hill descended to inform them that Mr. Bennet wanted to speak with John in his office.

Without a word, John and Kitty left the room to talk to Mr. Bennet about their plans. As they walked, Kitty couldn't help but feel as if something was amiss.

John nervously cleared his throat as he entered Mr. Bennet's study. "Sir," he began, "I have come to ask for permission to court your daughter, Miss Catherine."

Mr. Bennet let out a sigh and looked up from his reading, arching one eyebrow. "What makes you think I would grant you permission?"

John took a deep breath, trying to steady the nervousness in his voice. "Because I love her," he said. "To make Miss Catherine happy, I am willing to do anything. Although my financial state may not be the best, I can give her a comfortable life. In the future, I will inherit Lucas Lodge, but over the past few years, I have been putting aside some of my earnings into savings and investments in hopes of buying a home for my bride-to-be, in order to provide for a family of our own. I know that I can make Miss Catherine happy and provide for her, sir."

Mr. Bennet assessed John with a long, scrutinizing look before finally giving a nod of approval. "Very well, you have my permission to court Kitty ." He seemed puzzled by the decision, remarking on how an intelligent and sensible man like John had chosen one of his silliest daughters. "Living with a woman who never comprehends what you are saying may seem amusing at first, but it will not remain amusing over time."

John was immediately taken aback by this statement and quickly defended Catherine's character. "I don't believe her to be silly at all," he said. "In fact, I find her to be quite insightful, thoughtful, and artistic, with a generous spirit."

Mr. Bennet raised an eyebrow in surprise at John's passionate defense of his daughter. "Very well," he said. "I trust that you have made your choice after much consideration and that you are aware of the kind of woman you are proposing to court. As long as she makes you happy and you treat her with the respect she deserves, then I have no objections."

John nodded, understanding the warning, and left the study with a relieved smile on his face. Finally, he and Kitty could begin courting each other officially.

Kitty couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her as her father gave his blessing to John. She had been worried sick about what her father would say and was overjoyed to finally be able to be with the man she loved, despite experiencing a twinge of disappointment because of Mr. Bennet's words.

After they left the study, Kitty intertwined her hand with John's and guided him outside to the garden. Neither of them spoke as they strolled through the grounds admiring the colorful blooms. Finally, Kitty paused and looked up at him. Softly, she said, "John, I realize this request is out of the ordinary, but I was wondering if you would allow me to draw a portrait of you for me to keep."

John was surprised by her request but felt flattered nonetheless. "Of course, my dear," he replied with a smile. "I would be honored to be the subject of your artwork."

Kitty gleefully led him to a nearby bench, where she had spread out all her supplies for drawing. As she got to work, John sat patiently, admiring the way her eyes sparkled with each stroke of her pencil.

Once she had finished her painting of him, Kitty was so pleased that she approached John and pressed her hands on his, imploring him to follow her. She guided him towards the portrait. When John saw the finished product, he was in awe; he looked even more handsome than he did when he gazed into the mirror.

John took Kitty's hand and kissed it. "My sweet ," he whispered, "you possess such talent. I am truly honored."

Kitty beamed with joy, feeling a warmth spreading throughout her body. She was grateful to her father for approving of John's request for courtship and felt thankful that she had done the portrait justice. Her spirits lifted even higher when she leaned in and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek.

Feeling emboldened, she mumbled softly into his ear, "John, I know this may sound bold, but please accept this as a token of my love."

He looked taken aback, yet there was a softness in his eyes that touched Kitty deeply. He whispered back, "I love you, Catherine. I love you more than words can say."
