Rorschach's Legend Chapter 3
While Dan can admit he was skeptical about what his friend had warned him about he knows him well enough to take what he says seriously. Especially after such a hardball like the Comedian being killed in what appears to be an assassination instead of a chance everyday robbery.
So, Dan sees fit to visit one of the Watchmen numbers that might perhaps be next on the apparent hit list because his identity is actually known to the public masses.
Adrian Veidt, also, known to all as Ozymandias.
Not wanting to leave Evangeline at home alone Dan takes her with him to Adrian's building in the city where he conducts his business for Veidt Industries.
As it happens Adrian is in the middle of an interview when they arrive, so they're directed off to the side to wait. Adrian spots them, smiling and waving a greeting, silently asking them to wait and it'll only be another minute. Dan happily returns the gesture, but Evangeline is more subdued as she looks around.
To be honest, Evangeline doesn't really want to be here, but Dan insisted. Her dislike for the place and its owner increases the more she listens to Adrian talk. Dan sees this guy as a friend, but Adrian's voice feels nothing but condescending and precocious to her.
Soon enough the interview for the current magazine issue ends and Adrian turns his attention completely over to his more pleasant and agreeable company.
Dan is quick to explain to Adrian why he's come as Evangeline is given leave to wander around the room.
Adrian takes them to his living quarters in the same building for some privacy. During this time Dan relays to Adrian exactly what Rorschach told him.
"So, Rorschach thinks someone is hunting the Watchmen, huh," said Adrian, coming out of the bathroom in more casual wear than the suit he wore for the interview.
Neatly folding the newspaper he'd been reading and placing it on the desk, Dan said "You think it's possible?"
"Statistically speaking, one murder doesn't equal a trend," said Adrian. "Rorschach's a sociopath, Dan." All right, scratch what Evangeline said before. She more than highly dislikes the guy now and feels indignant disdain toward him on Rorschach's behalf, tossing his concerns aside as unimportant. Finding Adrian's view about her rescuer is despicable and utterly atrocious. "And so was the Comedian. He was practically a Nazi. You know that better than anyone."
"I'm not here because I miss him," said Dan.
Chuckling, watching the rain drip on the windows, Adrian said "It's obviously occurred to Rorschach that we're the only ones who know each other's identities."
Evangeline rolls her eyes, tracing her fingers over some books on the shelves.
Grinning good-naturedly, Dan said "Actually, the whole world knows yours. That's why I'm warning you first."
"Thank you, Dan," said Adrian, showing his appreciation for the fact. "But I fear there's something much more real to worry about than Rorschach's mask killer."
Sobering, bleakly, Dan said "If the Russians do launch their nukes, can Jon really stop them?"
"The Soviets have 51,000 warheads stockpiled. Even if Jon stops 99 percent of them, the 1 percent that gets through could still kill every living thing on Earth," surmised Adrian, rationally, grimly.
Dan solemnly nods in agreement.
"Even Dr. Manhattan can't be everywhere at once," said Adrian, gently blunt on the subject.
Subsequently, not everyone can be invincible.
Dan doesn't contradict him on that.
Adrian now focuses on the third person in the room.
"Tell me, Dan, who is the young lady you've brought with you to see me today? I don't believe I've ever seen her before," said Adrian, tilting his head to peer around Dan to look at Evangeline.
Clearing his throat, Dan said "Oh, yes, that is Evangeline. She's my ward. With everything that's going on, I didn't think it was a good idea to leave her all alone until we know that things are in order."
"Your ward? I wasn't aware you had one," said Adrian.
Nodding, Dan said "Evangeline has been in my care for a couple of years now. Rorschach brought her to me one night around 6 years ago. Had a pretty funny story to go with it, too. He told me she tried to pickpocket him. Instead of giving her a beating he delivered her to my doorstep after he found out she was an orphan. No other family relations. She's been in my custody ever since."
Brow raised, Adrian said "Rorschach, did that? I find it hard to believe that a psychotic man such as he would even possess a compassionate side."
"I know it's hard to believe, but it is there. When he visited me last night to check on our well-being, you should've seen the way they acted around each other. She actually hugged him, and he not only let her but returned the sentiment. The few times he's come around to visit her, Rorschach does show these brief interludes of affection. Almost gave me a heart attack when I saw it happen the first time around."
"Never imagined he's capable of emotions with how unfeeling Rorschach regularly acts," said Adrian, obstinately. He then catches her glancing at them. "It's nice to meet you, Evangeline."
Evangeline didn't bother to respond. She simply turns her nose up at Adrian, ignoring him.
Dryly, Adrian said, "She doesn't seem to like me very much."
"Considering you were just seriously badmouthing the one person she sees as her savior, practically hero-worshipping him, I'm not surprised by the snub," said Daniel, sharply, patting his friend on the shoulder. "I'd better get her home before it gets dark. I'll see you around, Adrian, Stay safe."
"You too, Dan," said Adrian.
Adrian watches the duo depart with keen and calculating eyes.
Authors Note:
Heads up everyone there's someone on fanfiction you need to seriously watch out for. Early a couple of days ago after I woke up I was checking my email and I saw I had a new guest review on my A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 sequel. I took a look at it and got a very big shock. Some random person I've never spoken to before on here or anywhere else in my life was basically threatening me. Intimidating and practically ordering me to write a threatening letter to someone on their behalf, telling to stay off of for life or else they and everyone else close to them would be killed, disgustingly telling them to kill themselves. And at the bottom of the message this crazy person wasn't done. Warning me that if I don't send the letter then they would kill me and for confirmation to email them to make absolutely sure I complied with their demands. Of course I did nothing of the sort. Instead of doing what they wanted I reported them to the website, sent copies of this deplorable guest review message to police officer cousins of mine so they could have it on file, and I went to a nearby police station and reported it.
When I spoke to the police officers and they checked everything on the message they saw, that while the address and names of business were accurate the people and their names were not. They agree it was more than likely a scam because of the email address on the bottom in order to perhaps get access to personal information or potentially hack my computer. Despite that I'm still very happy they took it seriously as I showed and told them everything. All the same I'm still very happy that I brought this to the attention of law enforcement. Even though the entire thing might be fake I'm still very happy to have brought this to the attention of those who can do something about it if it was legit in someway. This may have been a scam, but it's obvious these people are beyond irresponsible if they try to goad people into sending death threats to random strangers just to get access to info.
Be that as it may if this does unfortunately happen to you do not send any messages to the email addresses they put down and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you bring the message to the authorities immediately whether it is legit or not.
Because it's a guest review it might not be visible for a couple of days as it loads if it is sent to you. But when it does you should definitely pressing the report abuse button and send it to the email that leads to the support staff that is available.
Just a heads up to those of you who aren't aware of this yet, Email alerts for this website are now only active if Email opts is enabled in account settings.
I hope you all like this one! I certainly did while writing it for your vast enjoyment! ;D
For those of you just starting out with my stuff there are other works on my profile that may catch your interest. I highly recommend you take a look as soon as the opportunity presents itself to you. Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover.
Stay safe everyone. Especially with all of these crazy natural disasters occurring a lot lately due to global warming and climate change everywhere for sure. I swear it's like they're getting worse and worse all the time and it's like officials are simply just ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist entirely just to go on with their daily lives. Especially those in multi-million dollar companies that rely on certain elements of our planet that we rely on to naturally keep us safe instead of adapting and finding new safer ways to keep in business. There are so many options out there where they can adapt, but they just refuse to see it because all they care about is money. Climate change is altering so much faster than anyone can really keep track of.
So, in light of all this, it is important to live life to the fullest as much as anyone can.
I know I am. ;) See you guys next time.
