Darcy was irritated with his cousin, Richard, for making him and Bingley repeat a search they had already conducted, only this time they were accompanied by militia officers assigned by Colonel Foster. He couldn't understand why Richard insisted on revisiting the area when he wasn't even present himself.
Richard took one of the officers—Captain Carter—with him. Darcy was familiar with his reckless cousin; Richard could very well be doing exactly what he had been specifically commanded not to do, including searching the premises of nearby estates. Darcy just hoped that his foolishness wouldn't result in some estate owners or their footmen shooting him from afar for trespassing.
The exploration was tedious, and Darcy couldn't shake the feeling that their efforts were in vain. He had combed the place extensively already, but he admitted that Richard's presence gave him optimism. He'd warned his cousin to be cautious, but he knew that Richard could be impetuous and rash at times.
Meanwhile, Richard had dismounted and was heading for the estate closest to those woods. Carter muttered something unintelligible under his breath and followed Colonel Fitzwilliam regardless, as he couldn't disobey orders given by his superiors, even if he didn't quite comprehend their peculiar behavior.
Richard knew he couldn't enter directly into someone else's property without permission, so he decided to only search around the area instead. He didn't doubt the landowners, but figured that if abductors were able to trespass on Netherfield, then it might be possible for them to cross other estates as well.
As Richard surveyed the neglected grounds of the estate, he felt a chill run through his body. He couldn't explain why, but there was an eerie atmosphere emanating from the location. His years of military experience had taught him to trust his gut; something just didn't feel right.
The condition of the estate reinforced this feeling; were it not for some occasional noises of commotion from a few servants, it would look like an abandoned building.
Then, Richard noticed a small cottage at some distance away from the main estate. It was firmly locked, and it caught his attention as he continued to observe the area.
Captain Carter had caught up with him by this point, and Richard gestured towards the cottage. "What do you make of that?" he asked.
Carter squinted in the direction Richard was pointing. "Looks like an abandoned cottage. It could be why it's locked up."
Richard shook his head. "It's not abandoned; I can feel it. And if it is, why would it be locked up like that? We should investigate."
Carter hesitated, but ultimately nodded in agreement. They made their way toward the cottage, carefully staying hidden in the overgrown brush. As they approached, Richard saw that the locks on the door were old and rusty, and the wooden porch creaked under their weight.
He tried the door, but it wouldn't budge. "Help me," he said to Carter, and together they shoved against it until it finally gave way with a creak.
They took refuge behind the cottage, afraid that the servants or footmen had heard them. They waited there for twenty to thirty minutes without anyone coming to investigate. Richard figured that everyone working on the main estate was probably fast asleep.
As they entered the cottage, the air was musty and stale.
The room was covered in dust, and cobwebs dangled from the ceiling. As Richard scanned the room, he noticed that there was a trapdoor on the floor. He approached it, and it creaked as he knelt down to examine it.
Carter joined him, peering over his shoulder. "What do you think is down there?" he whispered.
Richard placed his hand on the trapdoor. "Only one way to find out," he said.
He lifted the door, revealing a set of rickety wooden stairs leading down to a dark and musty cellar. Richard's heart raced with anticipation as he descended the steps.
The cellar was colder than the cottage above, and the air was thick with the scent of mildew. Richard held his breath as he scanned the room, his eyes adjusting to the dim light. The cellar was empty, but he could sense that something was off.
He noticed something peculiar about the floor - it was almost entirely covered in a blanket of dust, save for a single patch near the wall. In the corner was an open cupboard filled with unusual objects such as handcuffs, rope, and a variety of knives with strange symbols etched on them. Richard wondered to himself, 'Why would someone keep these things?' Suddenly, he heard distant noises. He signaled to Carter that they had to leave immediately and followed him out. As they left, Richard knew there was something suspicious going on at this estate, and he needed to return. There must be more secrets lurking within the main building than just this quaint cottage.
