"It was about time."

The voice of Seto commented, unimpressed by the duel that was taking place before his eyes. Along with him were his young brother and school principal.

The elder man would laugh and ask, "I take this duel is not going the way you hoped?"

"For the most part." He replied bluntly, then continued, "However, that kid's current turn has actually done something that clearly caught all the observes off guard."

And it was true, Koji's summoning of his Gaia Plate did surprise a lot of the students there who were not into the game, nor had ever bothered to even watch it before. And now not only they had this spectacle, they were shown this with the latest advancement of Kaiba Corp's solid vision tech.

"Hopefully, the rest of the duel keeps picking up the phase. After all, this will work out well to spark interest in the club." Mokuba stated with his arms crossed behind his head. "Do you have any guess on who will win, brother?"

"I couldn't care less." Seto replied, closing his eyes before adding, "Neither player's life points have yet hit zero, so anything can happen." Then he opened his eyes and looked at Van in silence, "There you are. Boasted all that confidence earlier and ended up being pressured like this by some random kid. Typical among big mouthed players… however…" Thought before narrowing his eyes as he kept watching.

Meanwhile, the duel continued, with Koji having taken the lead and having destroyed two monsters from Van's frontline. Then declared "Alright Van, let's see if you can come around and turn this one around, buddy, I set two and then end my turn!" With two more face down cards being displayed on his side of the field, the boy's turn was over.

"Then I draw!" Van declared.

"My dragon knight will be destroyed one way or another. So, I better make use of it and get rid of one of his monsters at least. His tiki soul will make him take them most damage."

"Alright… Dragon Knight, attack and destroy his Tiki Soul." Then, his dragon rider brought its beast up into the air, and just like before, it would prepare a fire blast that would finally be shot towards the small rock statue.

However, while Van huffed being glad that his attack had potentially worked, something more caught him by surprise. Koji's second statue trap, Tiki Curse, began to levitate again with his eyes glowing red. And just like it did with its last victim, it blasted the Dragon Knight with those eye beams. Which impacted on the monster, once again turning it into stone, but this time around as it was in mid-flight; the beast just fell hard over the ground shattering in small pieces.

"What!?" Crossed his mind, as his eyebrows rose, shocked by what happened. His life points were not attacked, and the attack had landed on Koji. And yet, his monster was destroyed, but another of his.

People who were watching did grow confused at what happened, including Haruko and her friends.

"W-wait, Koji's lifepoints did go down. Doesn't that mean that Van's attack was a success?" Saori asked with a bit of tension, actually trying to understand what happened.

Haruko looked at her for a second, her expression was also of surprise, but soon changed as she saw how her friend was in reaction to what was going on in the duel. The voice of another of her friends delayed her response, however.

"Aren't there, traps or something?" Sayuri then asked Haruko, gesturing a bit with her chopsticks to call her attention.

With both of them now wondering what has happened, the girl responded "I'm not certain.", much to her friends' disappointment. However, she did point at Koji's field "If that was the doing of a trap card, then either of those he has set there would have revealed… and yet…"

"So…" Koji paused for a moment with a smug on his face, then explained, "the special ability of Tiki Curse goes like this. When one of my trap cards that are also treated as monsters, such as Tiki Soul, is destroyed by battle. Tiki Curse gets to destroy that monster after the damage calculation…"

Sayuri then grunted and narrowed her eyes upon hearing that explanation, "Ugh, see, this is why I don't like this stupid game!" Which made both Haruko and Saori laugh, as they couldn't help to find her frustration nothing but entertaining.

The duel continued with the chubby duelist pointed at Van, "But, I'm not done, you triggered my trap cards. I reveal two copies of Rock Bombardment!"

The boy then took two cards from his deck and send them to the grave. While shuffling his deck he explained further "Now, what each of these do, is letting me send a ROCK monster from my deck to the grave. They will work as ammo for the bombardment, making each of them damage you by 500 points!"

Then, two small catapults formed right next to Koji's displayed traps. When his cards were sent to the grave, the same, pulsed a couple of times with a yellow light. That made the Solid Vision system to display how those yellow lights then flashed over to the catapults, loading them with rocks. The siege weapons fired upon Van, with the rocks landing all around him, lifting a cloud of smoke, and decreasing his lifepoints even further.

"Tsk…" Van pressed his teeth, "… I'll set a card and a monster, that's all."

Turn 3 End

Meanwhile, Chiaki watched and chuckled to herself. "Nothing like Goro, right, Van?" Thought, looking at the boy now pushed to a corner.

Meanwhile, Rika kept watching the duel with little to no interest before she looked over to her friends. Haruko, naturally, would be observing it carefully. But then she noticed how Sayuri and Saori were actually watching as well, trying to pay attention and understand what was going on.

"So… this is a real duel then?" She asked before her friends looked over to her.

Then Haruko smiled a bit before noting, "Yes, but not exactly a professional level." With a casual tone, something that actually surprised her friends.

Saori rested her hand on Haruko's shoulder, "W-wait, what do you mean this is not high level of Skill? But Koji managed to change the phase of the entire duel in one turn."

Sayuri then added her two cents, commenting, "And he has Van on his grip!"

"Has the duel ended yet?" Haruko asked her friends, winking at her friends, "Let's see if Van has something under his sleeve. Besides…" then she thought about their exchange at the cafeteria. That confidence he was showing, and how even now he was being able to keep his composure well enough.

Turn 4 Start

Van 1200 LP—Koji 2800 LP

With a smirk and a chuckle full of confidence, Koji drew again. "Alright, this should do it!" Then slapped another card in his disk's board, "I summon Fossil Tusker!" And with that, the field slot where the monster would emerge, first, started to be covered by a dense mist. Then stomping could be heard, as the large creature walked out from it.

It seemed like an ancient quadruped beast, with pale rocky skin and layers that gave a mixed visual between the beast having a long fur and at the same time, part of its bones exposed. Two large tusks on the sides of its maw, hence the monster's name.

Fossil Tusker ATK 1800/0 DEF

Saori then pulled back a bit where she was sitting, "Ugh… I-I don't like that one…"

Rika then rolled her eyes saying "You can be such a baby at times, we will need to work on that at some point you know?"

"But it's scary!" Saori yelled back while pointing at Koji's new monster.

"And now…!" Koji called as he pointed at the set monster on Van's field, "In case that's a defense stack, Plate, destroy that set monster!" His massive rock giant then took a slow step forward, making the ground tremble slightly once again, then lifted its massive arm and swung it downwards, crushing the card to bits…

Sayuri hummed, "And there goes another one… alright, should we get goi-"

"Wait, look!" Saori pointed, interrupting her friend. She was pointing at the massive giant's hand. Underneath the hand, there was something or rather someone kneeling, and holding its ground against it. "What is that!?"

Haruko just remained in silence, carefully watching what was going on, while her friends looked surprised, oblivious of what Van could have kept there, hidden, that could stop that behemoth

"" Sorry…" Van mentioned with a smirk, "But my Monster won't go down that easily. Obnoxious Celtic Guard!"

Obnoxious Celtic Guard ATK 1400/1200 DEF

The guard then actually managed to push back the massive hand of the giant, revealing his looks a lot more. It was a noble looking warrior, with pointy ears, blonde hair. A very well-crafted armor mixing plate, leather, and mail bits. Armed with a long sword. His design gave him a bit of a heroic look. Which was not unnoticed by some observers there.

Both Saori and Sayuri were holding each other's hands as they watched the duel now with a faint blush as they saw the character, fitting of a fantasy novel.

"Such a cutie!" Sayuri exclaimed.

On the other hand, Saori asked, "W-why can't all of them look like him!?"

Rika, simply facepalmed at the scene her friends were making and shook her head. Only looking over to Haruko with curiosity. She didn't seem phased like the other two, no. She was very into the duel, and Rika could catch from her body language and look, that they were at the duel's defining moments. And that's why she decided to focus a bit more on the duel again, and see if she could see something at least a bit interesting for her.

Meanwhile, Van explained, "Unfortunately for you, my Obnoxious Celtic Guard won't be destroyed by any monster with an attack higher than 1900 points!"

"Then it's a deal!" Koji Exclaimed, "Tusker, give that guard a closer look of your tusks, charge!" The monster managed to easily charge through the warrior. Making him explore like the rest of the monsters, in the looks of hundreds of fracturing shards. But that wasn't all. The tusker kept charging until it managed to actually hit Van.

The boy's eyes opened wide, not seeing that one coming, then he felt a pulse that resembled a mixture of a mild kick from an electric shock, and a more physical force. It was strong enough to knock him back on the ground. "Ugh, damn it…!" muttered. Meanwhile, his mind simply went, "What the… what was that!?"

Damage Calculation

Van 1200LP - 800LP

Both Saori and Sayuri screamed "Noo!" when the guard was destroyed. Saddened by the departure of their favorite appearance of the duel.

Koji then explained "About my Tusker, whenever he battles with a monster and sends it to the grave, I get to deal 400 points of damage to you. Now, Van… It was fun, I mean it! But, all good things must come to an end!" Then he pointed at his opponent, "Tiki Curse, finish him off, attack his lifepoints directly!"

The girls watching nearby did also catch on the detail that it could be the end of the duel. With Rika simply exclaiming, "Is this it?!"

"Looks like it!" Sayuri exclaimed in response to Rika's comment.

Saori, on the other hand, found herself exclaiming, "Oh no!" apparently having found whom she was rooting for, at least through this duel.

Haruko then leaned forward, thinking "You are open, what's your plan!?" With both her fists clenched, and her lips pressed shut.

Chiaki just smiled, exclaiming "Oooh?!" wondering if that was actually going to be the end of the duel.

Van was still sitting on the ground, trying to catch his footing as the beam from the Tiki Course was fired towards him. But before the attack reached him, the boy just stretched a hand forward, "I activate my trap card. 'Enchanted Javelin'!" That'ts when the weapon appeared floating in front of him. Deflecting the beam all around Van, preventing a direct impact.

"Damn it, almost!" Koji exclaimed.

"Tsk…" Van slowly got up, dusting off his uniform and adjusting his sunglasses. "So… this one's a classic, so you may know about it. But the Enchanted Javelin grants me lifepoints equal to the attacking monster's value." He then shrugs saying "Yeah, I still take the damage, but it's virtually nullified." Then he looked back at Koji with his previous cold and calculating eyes.

Koji blinked, this time around. "Is he acting…? Nah… even if he had something in that set card, he couldn't be that dangerous, I got him on a corner." Thought before lifting his hand, "Destroyer Golem, charge. Wipe the rest of his lifepoints!" The golem then charged at the duelist, seeking to slam down its great fists on Van.

"No." Van said bluntly.

"What!?" Koji exclaimed, then he saw it. One of his two remaining set cards, lifting.

The boy adjusted his sunglasses again, while declaring. "I activate 'Back To The Front', this allows me to bring a monster from my grave, back into the field in defense position, and I bring back Dark Blade the Dragon Knight!" On the very last second, the beast rider emerged from the ground in a spark of light, and the wings of the scales of the dragon were enough to stop the last of Koji's attacks.

"Again!?" The three girls yelled.

"He stopped all of his attacks!" Saori pointed out, growing excited by that moment as she stood with her fists on her sides waiting to see what was going to happen on the next turn.

And it wasn't just them, there we people already cheering for both parts of the duel, while others were gossiping among themselves about the things, they were seeing take place in that duel.

"Last turn Van, make it count!" Koji screamed at his opponent with a grin on his face.

Van then drew a card and looked at his hand for a moment. He only had two cards left, plus the monster on the field.

Things in the whole scene were slowing down a bit, almost as if people were waiting to see what Van was going to do. Or if he was going to do something. Koji had certainly turned things around and made it apparent that while a big part of his deck is focused on the defense. Once he builds up his strategies, his offense can be deadly too.

"Hey… Haruko, do you think he can win?" Saori asked, while Sayuri just looked at her friend, waiting to hear her answer. She knew a lot more about Duel Monster than them.

And now, she had her friends' attention. She tried to do so earlier that day, now it was almost awkward for her with them showing an apparent interest in the game. "Uh… I…" she tried to collect her thoughts a bit "Four monsters on Koji's field, one on Van's… plus he only has 2 cards left in his hand, so not many resources…"

That's when she took a look at him from the distance, and noticed that fierce stare of his eyes more vividly, Haruko was somehow able to visualize a mixture of emotions in it… Anger, grief… and something else, like a hungering drive in him. His passion for dueling, perhaps? The desire to chase what he had told her earlier? He did state he desired to stand among those legends of dueling both of them, and every duelist does admire. And yet, in between all those raging emotions, there was an odd serenity… something keeping them in check…

And indeed, in Van's perspective, everything was slowed down. Thinking about his next, and potentially last, move from the duel. All those sentiments building up in him, it has been quite a while since someone pushed him like this. It was frustrating to a certain degree, but this was precisely what he looked for. To see what this place had really to offer. He slowly turned his head towards the building's main entrance, where the Principal and Seto were watching.

The head of Kaiba Corp didn't skip a beat, his arms were folded, and his usual demeanor was there. He didn't seem impressed in the slightest about the duel, it was an unreal thing that just one duel could change his perspective on the boy just like that. It was funny that some days ago he was mocking Goro about how him becoming king of the game was 'wishful thinking'. And now he was doing the same thing, trying to impress a legend just like that. Even thought, he had come to terms that achieving his acknowledgment was going to be a long road. Yet, his mind repeated one thing over and over again.

"Watch me…"

His eyes did shift over Haruko for a second. And there it was again… that odd feeling, strange, yet good… familiar. It was like that time on the street, but why was he feeling it again now?

He did notice the expression on her face, shock? Worry? Excitement? Hard to tell from his spot; her eyes were on him… he could tell that much. Then, he snapped back into reality and looked back at Koji. "Alright!" Exclaimed, certain of his next move. "Make it count, you said? It's all or nothing then!"

That actually brought a smirk to Koji's face. Seeing that his opponent wasn't just giving up, nor giving under the pressure. "Come on, show me!"

"Well, finally he seems to be doing something…" Rika commented, with her opinions of the game not changing in the slightest.

"Haruko, are you alright?" Sayuri called.

That question called Rika's attention and made her stand up and get closer to her, "Something wrong?"

"She is a bit pale and has just… zoned off…!" Saori said worried. Fortunately, her worried would be short-lived, as she started to mutter something.

"He is…" In a very delicate, and soft whisper came out from between her lips.

"W-what? Come on, Haruko, don't scare us!" Saori called as she tried to shake her a bit from her shoulder.

Haruko blinked a couple of times, as she seemed snapped out of her state. Then she stated, "He is going to win…"

"Huuuh?!" the trio of girls reacted before leaning closer to Haruko's face, puzzled by what she said.

"Watch!" Haruko exclaimed as she pointed at the duel. More specifically, at Van. Her expression wasn't anything close to strange, it was actually more relaxed than before. Even from when she was focused on the duel.

Meanwhile, Chiaki, who was watching from the upper floor, was analyzing the duel herself. Scratching her head while thinking about the whole state. "Hm, if I counted things right, Van should only have 2 cards in his hand. He only has that one monster, which won't last long if he doesn't do something. Still… 800 lifepoints…" The girl narrowed her eyes and tapped her index finger on her temple. "That doesn't give you room to extend the duel for long, unless you have something to boost your lifepoints enough to get you out of the woods." Then shook her head to disagree with what she just analyzed, "No, no, no! Koji has four monsters, and potentially bring more of his heavy hitters on the field. Both of them have only brought one. I know he does have Freed in his deck, but that won't do it here…".

Chiaki kept thinking for a while, before finally snapping her fingers, having come to a conclusion "He can't stretch the duel, and he is outnumbered in the field, not to mention he barely has resources at his disposal. If that card he got just gives him some room to move… his only shot might be… O.T.K …" Then hummed, leaning over the open window again, "Do you have that much heavy hitting power though, Van?"

The sunglasses-wearing boy then activated a spell card "I play Pot of Greed, which allows me to draw two cards!" he explained as he quickly drew said cards and looked at them for a moment.

Chiaki quickly leaned forward "Come on, come on, what is it!?" thought expectedly, while cheerfully and anxiously tapping her fingers on the window frame.

"He drew two cards, what did he get?!" Saori asked before being met with Sayuri's reply in an annoyed tone.

"How am I supposed to know that, I'm standing next to you Saori, Hello!?" Before then focusing back on the duel, not wanting to miss what would come next, and how Haruko's prediction would go.

The boy's turn continued as he declared, "I summon Marmiting Captain!" From a flash of light, a new knight emerged in Van's field. However… this was a little different from the previous ones. No menacing looks, no spiked armor, no large swords. No. It was a middle-aged looking knight, with short, blonde hair. Its attire consisted of a set of armor which was rather similar to those of Rahz and Marauding Captain. Yet, what was curious is that he wore a pristine, white apron on top of it. The apron had a little blue circle in the center with a cartoonish looking sword. To top it all off, this knight's weapon of choice, was a metallic spoon. Those used for stews or curries.

"What is… that?" Rika asked in disbelief, "Are you for real, that's what's gonna win him the game, Haruko?"

"W-well…" Haruko did start fidgeting with her fingers a bit, "I'm not exactly sure how… I'm just confident that Van is gonna win…" told her friends with an embarrassed smile

"WHAT!?" the three of them asked, with the same disbelief as Rika showed when seeing that knight, yet now intensified by Haruko's words.

She simply tried to point out her case by saying, "I-I just had this strange feeling… that's all!" her explanation continued a bit more by saying, "He just… looks… driven to win…"

Her friends remained quiet for a moment before Rika spoke up and asked, "Wait… you got a crush on him?"

"WHAT, NO!" she yelled back, jumping off her spot and getting on Rika's face, red as a tomato and annoyed at her call, yet proving to be perfect comedic material for her friends as they were all laughing at her reaction.

"My captain effect activates!" Van's voice called, which made Haruko's group and herself included focus back on the duel. "I'll shuffle one card from my hand into the deck, I'll shuffle and draw a new one… if it's a monster, I'll get to special summon it."

"A gamble?" Koji asked, raising an eyebrow, still well spirited about the whole duel.

"Heh, told you it was all or nothing, didn't I?" Van replied, placing one card from his hand into his deck. Then he stated shuffling.

The girls looked at what he was doing.

"What does he need to win?" Sayuri asked

Haruko shrugged, "We don't really know. But apparently, he is gambling his luck on a monster? Or maybe it's just an excuse to draw another card, potentially a trap or spell that could get him out of this spot… But he is at the end of his rope here. He needs a big turn now." she noted.

Once he was done shuffling, he placed his hand on the top of his deck. Then closed his eyes, and took a deep breath. That draw was the call, if he was winning or losing, that was it.

And it wasn't only him, the duel did well enough to keep those who were closely paying attention to it, at the edge of their seats, they all wanted to see what would he draw. And with a swift movement of his hand, he did so.

Van then opened his eyes and looked at his draw. He took another deep breath; he clenched his free hand into a fist and slowly closed his eyes again. Finally, he declared his move, "I summon my ace…!" Then he slapped the card on the disk board, "Come forth, BUSTER BLADER!" A new warrior appeared on his field. Different from his previous knights. With a dark and golden armor that covered its entire body. Red jewels adorning some parts of said armor. Armed with a great, curved blade that was sheathed on his back. The warrior stood proudly as it draws its sword and held it firmly in front of him, on an idle, guarding stance.

Buster Blader ATK 2600/2300 DEF

"What is he planning… that's not strong enough…" Koji thought, keeping his comments to himself for now, and just wanting to see what Van had in store for him.

"Now, I'll go into my battle phase. Buster Blader, attack his Destroyer Golem!"

"Nice try, but that won't be enough, Van!" Koji Yelled at him before adding, "I can still take a punch or two without going down, pal!"

Van smirked and replied, "Is that so?" Then closed his eyes, and with a smirk on his face stretched an arm. "I activate my trap card. DNA Surgery!" A new trap card showed on the field, making a group of blue skinned surgeons, dressed in green medical aprons, appear in front of it. Then pointed at Koji, "With this card I can change the monster type of all monsters of the field, to the one I declare. And I declare that all monsters on the field shall be DRAGONS!"

With that, the surgeons would disappear and the whole projection of the duel began to wave around and distort. The monsters that were present would morph into Draconic versions of themselves. "And with that, the effect of my Blader finally kicks in. My warrior's attack is boosted by 500 points for every dragon monster that there is on your field and grave!"

As soon as he called, the girls watching the duel looked at each other, "Then that's…" Before they said anything else, Saori was the one to step up and call, "That's a boost of 2000 attack points!"

With the realization of that, the rest of the group looked at the scene in the field, exclaiming, "That means he…!"

Koji then finished the phrase in a first person, shocked by the play Van has pulled. "…He has enough damage to wipe my life points…!

Buster Blader ATK 4600/2300 DEF

The bladesman then slashed the draconic Golem in a half. With a flash of light following the trace of the slash. The golem made a gesture with its body that suggested being in pain from the impact before shattering in hundreds of shining sparks, with the sound of echoing, shattering glass. Soon, the same fate would be shared by the rest of the monsters of Koji's field.

"Noo!" The boy exclaimed as he saw his monsters disappear one after another and his liftepoints dropping to zero.

Duel End

Van: 800 LP—Koji: 0LP

"He won!" Saori and Sayuri exclaimed. And their surprise was joined by the echoing reactions of those who were also watching the duel.

Students from across the campus and the upper floors' hallways were gossiping, with some excitement, about what they saw. Even if they did not sell in the idea of dueling, it clearly did work as good entertainment for them during the lunch break.

Haruko just watched her friends celebrating, almost with a smug on her face, as they were holding and shaking each other as they found themselves celebrating for Van's victory. Then she looked over at Rika, she still didn't seem all that excited, but her expression did show just a bit more of emotion than before.

"So tell me…" Rika looked at Haruko and asked, "… this is not supposed to be a high skill duel, then?"

Haruko blinked a couple of times and looked over at both duelists, "Well… "the Kaiba sibling Smiled a bit as she continued, "…Yup, trust me a high-level duel is even more intense!" then laughed.

Seeing her behaving like that brought a small smile to Rika, and then hummed, looking over to the site of the duel, where Van and Koji were still standing.

Van was standing with his eyes closed and his head hanging back, taking a deep breath, processing the duel he had just experienced. Koji was nothing like Goro, yet he still came out on top. But he wasn't really done yet, in fact, this actually was creating more of a path ahead for him. Van now thought about seeking more duelists like Koji, or even stronger, which he could test his meddle.

Then he saw Koji approaching him, and a sense of worry and dread struck his mind, pushing away that sudden excitement he was just beginning to feel. "Right… now this part comes…" He was half tempted to just step away and walk into the building, avoiding facing Koji after the duel. The memories of what was he being used to experiencing back home among other duelists sent a chill down his spine. The boy pressed his teeth and took a single step from his place towards the building, facing away from Koji, before this one called him.

"Hey wait up!"

The tone of Koji's words actually stopped Van in his place. Then looked over to his classmate. He was actually smiling at him, and had his hand out, offering a shake. His eyebrows were up, showing a clear expression of surprise. After relaxing a bit, Van turned to Koji and stretched his hand.

The chubby student snickered before saying, "That last play was amazing!" Then he continued with a question, "Up for a rematch anytime, right?"

Van was silent for a bit more, before a warm smile spread on his face and silently nodded. However, their moment would be broken by the ring that marked the end of the lunch break. Van looked at the building and commented, "Uh, we better get going…" Koji nodded at that and both teens started to make their way into the building. As they did so, Van suddenly felt Koji's arm reaching around his beck, pulling him down a bit due to the height difference between them. "Ugh, hey!"

Koji cheerfully commented, "Nothing like a duel to cement a new friendship, eh?" Then laughed. The boy's demeanor seemed contagious, as Van couldn't help to just think things a bit for a moment and then join him by also wrapping his arm around Koji's neck.

"You bet!" Van exclaimed before both of them were laughing together

Seto had already left the area along with Mokuba when the duel had reached to its conclusion. As it appeared that their businesses were done, as they were going to get on their car Mokuba noted something.

"Wait!" The boy exclaimed "Damn I forgot, your duel disk, Van still has it!" He quickly turned around and got ready to rush back into the school when…

"Leave it." Seto called. His arms folded in front of his chest and his eyes closed. "After that duel, it surely was stained with his sweat and stench. I'll work on a new model for myself."

Mokuba just looked at his brother for a moment and then shrugged, showing a defeated smile on his face, and hopped on the car, finally taking their leave. Seto was however still thinking about that little rascal who had the audacity of thinking he could just challenge him.

Meanwhile, at the school. Things carried on rather normally. People were talking about the duel they watched. Some students more impressed than others. At his office, the principal was thinking about it again. Particularly on the scene after the duel, the gesture of both sportsmanship and camaraderie was stuck in his mind. And the more he thought about it, the more pleased he was at the prospect of things to come on that year.
