I will keep a running list of male to female names as characters are introduced at the end of each chapter.

The others look confused, honestly Harry is confused because despite being ready, despite being prepared, it wasn't the same as his own third year. For one, there is no ice on the windows, no subtle creeping horror, or fears.

Had the Dementors not reached them yet? Were they after someone else instead? He frowned and stood, earning wide-eyed stares from the girls. "I need to go check" he announced, leaving no room for debate or arguments.

And the arguments were coming, he could see them in all of their eyes, something primal and protective, something that he imagined would be in his own eyes if it were Hermione or any girl telling him the same. He would want to keep them safe, protected.

Perhaps those mentalities were reversed in this world as well, maybe it was Cavewomen who were referenced for being overprotective and possessive.

Any further comments were interrupted by the sound of glass shattering and screams a few carriages down. Within seconds Harry, along with the others, were in the hallway, pulling open the only unopened door as others peeked out in concern and fear.

Inside was a sight that froze the others in terror. It wasn't a cloaked creature, wasn't a soul devouring monster that held down one of the students, snarling in her face.

"Werewolf…" Hermione gasped out, eyes widened as she stood behind Harry in the doorway.

The boy-who-lived, on the other hand, didn't hesitate. His wand was out, and it took barely a mutter to toss a spell that launched the creature back out the window it came from. The teenager, someone he vaguely recognized as belonging to Slytherin, was shook up and injured but it didn't appear to be serious.

Then came the thumps from the roof, more clawed limbs, more muscle, more fur, dozens or more creatures and Harry Potter realized that it wouldn't be Dementors this year that would be the source of his concerns.

His mind whirled, processing the situation, trying to come up with a solution using what he knew of the creatures. Assuming everything was true between universes, and those magical laws did seem to be the same in both, they tended to be more primal, but more dangerous, in their transformed states. Drawn by flashy displays or the sights and smells of battle.

Panic was beginning in the surrounding area, younger students crying older students freaking out, and not for the first time did Harry wonder why adults weren't stationed on the Hogwarts Express more often.

"Evacuate the back of the Express, move all the students into the forward cars and secure them." He ordered, voice sounding older than he remembered it being. Others looked ready to protest, until a howl echoed. That sound, that bone-chilling blood-curdling sound was enough that the older students began herding the youngers forward, vague promises about how 'everything would be okay' were whispered and muttered for those speaking just as much for those in terror.

"What do we do?" Amy asked, voice hardened as much as she could manage. Still, the boy could see uncertainty and fear in her eyes, not that he blamed her. By this point in his original life, he had faced far worse things than Lycans, but she wasn't him and he was infinitely glad for such a fact.

With a gesture he pointed towards where the other students were passing them in their rush to perceived safety. "Go, I'm going to draw them back as best I can." Harriet was shaking her head in refusal, and he understood. He wouldn't have wanted to abandon anyone either, but the situation was different. "I need you to go. I can fight but not with you this close. I can't risk holding back to make sure I don't hurt you too."

In the end it was Hermione who grabbed onto the two witches and gave a pull, Luna who held Ginny's arm to guide her to safety. The remainder of the hallways was empty, quiet save for the sounds on the roof, the cracking of glass as the monsters made their way inside.

As Hermione finished pushing the last of the students through to the next segment, closing the door behind her, she glanced back one last time, and the sight had the air leaving her lungs.

Harry struck his wand against his forearm, igniting the end like one would do a match. With a twirl he lifted it above his head and then flames poured forth, sliding down and around his body like water. They twisted and formed, shaping long robes of living fire.

He shone like a warrior of old mixed with the birth of a star, and even as she forced herself on, she knew it would be a sight never surpassed.

To say the room was tense would have been an understatement. Snape was glaring at Riddle, Grace was meeting the glare with a challenging look of her own, and the other staff members seemed to be stuck siding with one individual or the other.

Do they go with the Potion mistress on the grounds that she was doing what had been necessary to protect students and save lives? Or would they choose their innocent colleague who had been wrongfully accused on the basis on circumstantial evidence?

Dumbledore had made her case time and time again of trusting those they worked with, but for the present 'conflict' she opted to stay neutral. Hogwarts needed a functional staff of professors and adults first and foremost. Their petty squabbling and differences came after the children.

As the Headmistress prepared to interrupt whatever argument was brewing a sudden, and urgent, tapping at the window drew everyone's attention. It was an owl, one looking rather distressed, clutching a small piece of parchment.

It took only a few quick strides to reach the barrier and allow the poor creature in before taking the object and scanning it over, her skin paling as she did so.

"Headmistress," McGonagall inquired, "what is it? What…"

"The Express has stalled, there is an emergency, Werewolves."

No one so much as breathed for what felt like an eternity before the room was filled with a flurry of movement. Old rivalries were forgotten as a moving plan was set in motion, Sprout would race to Pomfrey and contact St. Mungos for additional help. Dumbledore, Riddle, Snape, McGonagall, and Flitwick would immediately grab brooms and head to the train to assist. The remaining professors would begin contacting the Aurors, Wizengamot, and any other medical services that might be available should the worst come to pass.

***HP:O ***

The first creature crashed through the window to his left and was promptly thrown back out with a burst of flames, this had the desired effect as howls sounded across the area. In the distance, he could make out the sound of reinforcements of the attackers.

Just as he planned, draw them away from the other students then make them regret laying siege to a train full of children.

Another pair burst through the carriage door and were met with a searing heat and fire launched by the flick of his wrist. It was a technique he had learned during the summer, though not specifically from Grace. It was advanced, a protective shielding of fire to discourage melee combatants while allowing the wielder to have an easy source of offense. Still, it was draining, and he could only hope to drive them off before it wore him down.

He met another attempted assault with a river of flames before spinning and catching a flanking Lycan with a fireball to the face.

They are beginning to time their attacks, to wait for him to be occupied in one direction before making a lunge from a different. Worse was the fact that more were coming with each wave, requiring a greater expenditure to drive them back.

With each blast he weakened, and they grew bolder.

***HP:O ***

The journey was a blur as the group sped through the air, each silently cursing the average brooms that the school could afford to supply. If they had the newest Nimbus, they would have arrived at least a few minutes faster.

When the stopped train came into view more than one gasp was muffled only by the rushing of air.

Lycans swarmed the Express in two main groups. One near the front of the train and the other, far larger, towards the back.

"The note said the students were gathered in the front" Dumbledore called out; voice barely being heard. It was then that a burst of fire erupted from the rear portion of the train, blowing out windows and sending Werewolves falling backwards in fright.

"Harry…" Riddle whispered, her gut telling her even before the display of elemental magic what the situation was.

Flying forward Augustina made a slight gesture, sending McGonagall, Flitwick, and Snape to the front while Riddle and her took the rest. The Headmistress swept in first, jumping from her broom at the last second.

She landed with the force of an explosion, a luminescent-blue shockwave roaring along the exterior of the train in all directions, battering the intruders off as if they were insects. Snape took up a position on the exterior as well, while McGonagall and Flitwick landed at an entrance and took to securing the front interior.

Meanwhile, Grace practically flew in threw one of the windows, shattering it with a spell a half-second before making contact. The creatures on the inside remained stunned for a moment, more than enough time for her to shatter bones and rip muscles, leaving them incapacitated and incapable of further threat.

Wasting no further time, she moved to the next car. Upon opening it her instincts had her leaping backwards, narrowly avoiding the inferno that lashed out at anyone and anything. In the center of what could only be described as a whirlwind of magic and flame was Harry, spinning and controlling the ability as it sent searing bolts into anything that so much as moved.

With the outside cleared the remaining Werewolves quickly made to disperse, and Grace pushed in, avoiding or dissipating the few instinctive attacks until she reached the heart of the storm.

"Harry!" she called out, causing him to stop and strike at point-blank range. She caught his arm, naturally, face shifting into one of sympathy and concern, "It's okay, just me. You're okay now."

Understanding, and regret, were in his eyes but before he could so much as utter a word he slumped forward, eyes closing and flames dissipating as she caught him in her arms.

Acting quickly, Riddle pulled off her outer robe before wrapping him with a heating charm.

Dumbledore was there before she had made it halfway back to her broom.

"Ignis Damnum, he's going into shock." She explained, earning a wide-eyed look from the Headmistress before she too removed her cloak and wrapped it about him.

"The others are fine, get him back to Hogwarts and Pomfrey, don't wait for us."

Riddle hadn't planned on it.

***HP:O ***

The Great Hall was filled with a frenzy of activity, not unusual for the Welcoming Feast, but what was strange was the topics and moods. Tension and concern were evident, after all the Hogwarts Expressed had never been attacked in the history of the school, and while most injuries were minor scrapes and bruises one student in particular was missing.

His absence, very evident after rumors began to spread, was the next 'big topic', that and the magic he had displayed. Whispers spread concerning what he had done, what he had accomplished before the year had even truly begun.

"Elemental Magic" some said.

"Arcane Fire" others claimed.

"Ancestral Rituals" still more assured.

Finally, it was the Headmistress' presence at the front table that earned silence. "Before the Sorting commences, I would like to address what happened earlier today. As many of you are aware the Hogwarts Express was attacked by Werewolves, luckily injuries were few and this incident has been brought to the attention of both the Auror department and The Ministry for further investigation and action. Though this has never occurred before we are not taking any further chances and thus, for the time being, all permission to Hogsmeade has been revoked."

This statement earned shocked silence, followed by outrage, which was quickly interrupted by a loud bang from Dumbledore's wand,

"This is not up for debate. Until such time as we can assure the safety and protection of all traveling students none of you are permitted to leave the Wards without approval by both your Head of House and myself. I have been assured that the Ministry is taking the situation very seriously and there will be decisive action in the next few days." Her statement earned a soft snort from several members of the staff, one which Augustina chose not to acknowledge.

As she sat down another adult stood and cleared her throat, "If I may add in a few of my own comments, Headmistress. It has come to not just my attention but several other staff members that there is a great deal of curiosity regarding what Harry Potter did on the train, the techniques he used, and the Magics he employed. Let me just say this, if I ever hear any of you asking for lessons regarding this or pestering him you will be spending the rest of your evenings and weekends in detention for what remains of your time at Hogwarts."

A deep, shocked, silence fell on the students, allowing the woman to continue.

"What Harry did was more than reckless it was borderline suicidal. The fact he isn't dead or in a coma is nothing short of a miracle and I have no doubt that if any of you attempted the same thing your luck would not hold out as well as his did." The woman looked over to Dumbledore, perhaps expecting a reprimand, perhaps not. What she did receive was a confirming nod and a stern look from the Headmistress showing her support.

Pathetic

Amaryllis Potter tried valiantly to keep such negative thoughts away, tried everything she could think of, but it was to no avail. Once more she sat in the medical ward, once more she stared down at an unconscious member of her family.

How many times? How many times had this happened? How many times was it going to happen? The end of last school year had been bad enough with Harriet, but when Riddle carried Harry up, unconscious and barely breathing, she thought her world would end.

If one of her siblings didn't recover it would break her, if neither did, she wouldn't survive either. From her left a subtle shifting reminded the redhead that her sister was okay. That she had recovered from the petrification.

But that had left Harry, injured and near-death all to protect them. Now, once again, they were in the same situation. Once more the world wasn't right because he shouldn't be here, they shouldn't be here.

In less than six months she had failed again, she had walked away when he needed help. To hell with the difference in their skill levels, with his own incredible abilities and her own, merely average, ones. She should have stayed, should have watched his back and protected him.

Instead, she had walked away with Harriet, making an excuse of protecting her and the others as justification.

"What are we going to do?" A voice inquired softly, a voice she knew all too well along with the pain etched into it. "We have to… there must be something…"

Even Harriet seemed to be at a loss for words, but she understood. They both felt helpless, and maybe they were, but they still needed to try.

***HP:O ***

Slytherin house was in an odd state, certainly not one that any of the members could ever recall having experienced before. There was still an air of uncertainty, a feeling of mistrust and blame that hovered between every student. None, save for the first years, could forget the previous events, the division, the accusations, the fear.

Now though something had unexpectedly united them, Harry Potter.

He was the reason the other houses now looked at them with respect and awe, the reason so many had shifted dynamic and view towards the 'House of the Cunning'. Even Gryffindor, with their unspoken rivalry, were less antagonistic.

Some, naturally, basked in the attention, seeking to derive as much favor as possible before it ran out, others bid their time, waiting for the perfect opportunity.

As for their thoughts concerning the boy himself, it was a massive shift from the previous year. In the first he had been an enigma to be mostly ignored or criticized, even after rumors flew concerning his apprenticeship towards their Head of House.

The previous year had pushed those feelings lower. With fear and concern around every corner few would choose the side of Riddle and Potter, that is until the final weeks when the truth was revealed, and even more rumors circulated.

With a summer to catch bearings, converse with adults, and verify facts many were prepared to shift their views and actions towards the wizard.

Then the train had been attacked, and none could continue denying his actions to protect them and the other students.

Suddenly, all those crazy stories and rumors didn't seem as such. If he had been able to wield magical flames of enough strength to repel dozens of werewolves, then surely, he could have defeated an adult in a one-on-one duel.

For one person, however, the recent events on reaffirmed both her beliefs in Harry and dissatisfaction with the rest of her classmates. Pandora Malfoy's eyes narrowed in barely concealed annoyance as a group of fifth year students whispered to each other, her future husband's name audible, if just barely.

Perhaps it was admiration, perhaps it was envy and jealousy, maybe even a tad of ill placed overprotectiveness. Regardless, it pissed her off. These same girls would have sneered and insulted him mere months prior but now they were acting as if he was special to them.

They were nothing, no more than pathetic wastes of time and breath. Harry wouldn't have glanced in their direction had it not been to protect hundreds of students, a sacrifice he shouldn't have needed to make.

He had been, once again, harmed only this time there was no obvious culprit she could direct her wrath towards. Could she hate the Lycans? Yes, and she did obviously, but they were barely above animals in such states, hardly the type to create an intricate plan of attack.

No, there was something else going on, something behind the scenes, and if said something had a name and had been involved in the injury of her future fiancé then she would endeavor to make their existence as painful as possible.

Still, with everything that had occurred word would be spreading back to those with actual power and influence soon enough. While she knew none of the students at Hogwarts posed any threat to her position, with Harry by her side, the matter of their parents was a different one entirely.

Especially if her own mother was still being stubborn about the situation. But perhaps this would change her mind as well. Once Narcissa heard of what had happened, and Harry's actions, she would be forced to face the truth, that such a wizard was perfect for future husband to her heiress.

***HP:O ***

Vague warnings, that was all she had been told. Her alternate, older, self hadn't wanted to disclose too much, hadn't wanted to risk changing anything for the worse or having someone hurt that wouldn't have been otherwise.

Thus, things had been kept short and simple. Something bad happened their first year, involving Ginny and a book, something bad also happened every other year it seemed as well.

But Harry almost killed? No, that had certainly never been mentioned. She knew that the older Luna and Harry had been close, best friends perhaps, so shouldn't she have mentioned something more? A bigger hint, a whisper about maybe how to stop what was coming?

It was mostly silence from the other end though, and silence didn't help them, certainly not while Harry was lying unconscious in the ward, not after he had almost killed himself protecting them, not while…

A hand grabbed her arm and pulled, almost dragging her into a nearby, empty, classroom. It was only after she had shaken herself free of the cobwebs that she noticed Ginny standing in front of her. The redhead was nervous, scared, worried, and more.

"I know we talked about this." Her best friend began, "I know you said it was important, that it wasn't your secret to tell, I know that you told me to have patience and that it was a secret."

Luna nodded slowly, waiting for the Weasley to finish her rant.

Ginny trailed off her face scrunched up in the way the blonde knew meant she was trying to figure out the right words. "Harry could have… we could have… Luna, what is going on?"

She knew it would come to this, knew her friend would ask eventually, but the problem is it wasn't her secret to tell. If Harry wanted to let her in on the secret, then he could, but it was his secret, not hers.

"You should ask him, when he wakes up." It was obvious the redhead knew who she referred to as indicated by the huff and silent 'I don't really like your answer or waiting.' "Ginny, this is important, but it is for Harry to tell, not me."

"And the…" the more excitable girl waved her arms about, "attack!? He could have been seriously hurt Luna! If it is about what happened, then…"

But the Lovegood heiress was quick to interrupt, "It isn't, at least I don't think it is connected."

"Then what is…"

"Ask him."

"But…"

"Ask him" the blonde practically demanded, earning a wince and a slight nod of acceptance from her friend.

***HP:O ***

"What. The. Hell. Happened!?"

For all her decades of teaching and experience Dumbledore knew when to wince at the sheer rage contained in those four words. The elderly witch didn't blame the younger in the least bit. In less than six months her one daughter had been petrified and Harry was confined to the medical ward twice with life-or-death injuries.

If the situation had been reversed, she would likely be throwing curses. Thus, it was either a testament to the unending patience of Lily Potter, or that somewhere deep down she still held an inkling of respect enough to hold back.

"You've heard about the attack on the Express." It wasn't a question, and the redhead gritted her teeth while nodding. James, on the other hand looked closer to throwing up. "Harry intervened, placing himself in harm's way to ensure that the other children remained safe."

The growl deepened "He shouldn't have had to do so in the first place!"

Dumbledore quickly nodded, "I agree with you Lily, and we are doing our best to figure this out."

"Figure what out?" the man inquired, placing a calming hand over his wife's to try and ease her obvious tension.

"They don't think the attack was random." A fourth voice interrupted, drawing attention to the, up until that moment, silent and clearly apologetic Grace Riddle. "The Aurors are investigating, but if they have found anything they aren't sharing. I don't know how up to date you two are in politics but there is a piece of anti-werewolf legislation in debate right now, calling for full registrations and mandatory medical and psychological assessments."

Augustina picked up the conversation, "More than a few of our students are related to those in the Wizengamot. It would not be a stretch to assume this was a retaliatory attack."

The two parents slumped down into a pair of chairs, before the redhead sent a heated glare at the Defense Professor, opening her mouth only to be interrupted at the last possible second. "I know, I'm not sure whether to be furious at myself or not right now. On one hand what I taught Harry probably saved his life and the lives of several other students, on the other it is the reason he's still unconscious and might have led him to getting involved in the first place. I assure you; it will be keeping me awake for the next few days at least."

Silence fell for a few moments before the Headmistress let out a sigh, "Loathe as I am to ask him, I wonder if Harry could shed any light on the situation, when he awakens, I mean. If he knows what is happening perhaps, we could slip an anonymous tip or two to the Aurors.

"I'm not sure he knows this time." James replied, earning all the attention, "We talked… during the summer I mean, and I tried to guide him towards anything that might be awaiting us this year, you know just in case. He mentioned Azkaban and escapees."

"What in the world would have… It was Sirius, wasn't it?"

The man smiled for the first time since hearing the news, "Of course it was. But there shouldn't be anything like that this time around. We don't have any enemies, especially no one who would be in prison or have connections to Lycans."

Silence fell onto the room, before Riddle shook her head in disgust. "I suppose that does clear up one mystery…" The others turned towards her before she gave a sad smile, "Why else would he have learned the Patronus in his third year if not to deal with Dementors?"

***HP:O ***

Harry let out a groan as he awakened, chills still traveling through his body despite the multiple blankets that were piled on him. There was movement nearby, and even without his glasses he knew who sat at the side of his bed.

"Is everyone okay?"

There was a sigh, luckily not a 'worse than you think' type but more of a 'we knew you would ask that, but this still isn't okay'. "Yes, Harry, other than some minor cuts and bruises everyone else is just fine. You on the other hand almost died."

He flinched before muttering out an apology.

James Potter removed his glasses before wearily rubbing at the bridge of his nose, "We… understand Harry, why you made your decision. We know you can't just stand by and let others suffer we just…"

The older man trailed off and his wife quickly picked up the conversation, "Wish you could have done so without hurting yourself in the process."

"To be fair, I wasn't planning on it being that bad either."

Both smiled sympathetically, "Regardless, we have spoken to both Dumbledore and your Head of House. You are to take it easy, for the next few weeks. Students will remain on Hogwarts grounds, behind the safety of the wards, until the situation has been resolved."

"Situation?" He knew it had been bad, obviously, but figured it was some sort of fluke, much like the Dementor attack his own third year had been.

The two exchanged a glance and the man answered, "They don't believe this was a random attack. Whether there was a specific target or just the daughters and sons of the Wizengamot in general no one is sure. What we are sure of however is that Hogwarts is safe and there is no reason for you to be leaving the premise to go looking for trouble."

Harry frowned but nodded regardless. He had heard similar promises before and they turned out to be false which just meant he would wait and see how the year faired. If his own history was any indication, then the school wasn't as secure as everyone thought it might be.

"There is also the small issue of how public this event was. During your last two years the staff was able to hide or at least downplay your involvement. This time, however, there were too many witnesses and with you being in recovery for so long…" Lily trailed off, earning a frown from the boy.

James chose to pick up where she left off, "Let's just say you are going to be very popular this year, both with the students and their parents."

The redhead frowned before crossing her arms in annoyance, "We will deal with most of it, but there are likely to be some more formal contracts and requests coming from the families of those you protected."

"Like we said, it's nothing to worry about Harry," James said, "just focus on your recovery and studies. We will handle the rest."

***HP:O ***

Favors

They had been called in, favors accumulated from years, perhaps decades, prior. A debt which was promised to be repaid in return for action. Surely such a deal was worth it in the long run, honor restored, peace found.

Dumbledore wasn't sure and glancing at her guest, as they made their way through the halls, she wasn't certain the woman knew either. "How was your trip?" A rough, scarred, face looked back with eyes boring into her own, eyes green with the faint tracing of amber so typical in one possessing the curse of Lycanthropy.

"A bit tiring, I will admit." Even her voice had a roughness in it, though the Headmistress did not blame her in one bit.

"Well, you will have plenty of time to rest and recover. There are several empty guest rooms for you to choose from."

The younger witch nodded, "Tomorrow, I will start on my tasks in the morning."

Augustina gave her reply, eyes shining in the same way the werewolf remembered from so long before. "Very well, I will trust you to take what actions are necessary to protect the students and ensure there are no further incidents."

"That is why I am here."

As they reached the guest housing, footsteps and conversation approaching from an intersecting hall, a pair entering their view before halting.

Grace Riddle and Harry Potter.

"Ah, wonderful timing as always." Dumbledore praised, before gesturing towards the one next to her. "Grace, you may remember Miss Lupin, and this is Harry Potter, the one you will likely hear quite a few stories about in the coming weeks."

Remi smiled, clearly hoping she would not frighten the boy. Harry, in the meantime looked at her with something of fond remembrance, not that it surprised Augustina in the least. He had mentioned Lupin in passing and it was just one more reason she had agreed with the outside assistance.

"Its… nice to meet you." He managed to reply, clearly uncertain as to how he should be addressing her. Remi merely nodded and a gentle hand on Harry's shoulder from his Head of House had him continuing towards the Slytherin dorms.

The remaining pair walked for a few moments before the Werewolf broke the silence, "Is that… him?"

"Indeed, he's the one who saved countless on the train. He is quite amazing for his age."

"Yes, he certainly is."

***HP:O ***

It had been stupid, incredibly stupid. Magic at that level could very easily prove lethal to the one wielding it just as those being targeted.

What had he been thinking!?

Riddle understood, deep down, Harry's choice. It was far too apparent after the few years of knowing him that he wasn't going to just stand by while others were hurt, especially not after the staff's utter failure of the previous year.

They had been given one chance to prove that, as adults, they could handle situations involving the safety and security of students. They had failed, utterly.

Now he would likely throw himself at every problem and threat without pause or hesitation, knowing the consequences of what would happen if he didn't. The question remained, what could they do about it.

The obvious solution was to convince his parents to ground him for the rest of his natural life, likely not a difficult thing to do, then lock him up in his room whenever he wasn't in class. Unfortunately, Harry likely wouldn't appreciate such a thing and he had a tendency to find ways out of or into situations he shouldn't be able to.

Second option, tie their wrists together so he was no more than five feet from her at all times, that would make it damn difficult for him to find his way into any life-or-death situations without her being there to scold him.

Again though, he had gotten through wards that should have stopped him and could cast magic that shouldn't be feasible for his age. Who knew what he could do if given enough time and incentive?

Sending him to a different school was blatantly out of the question. Hogwarts was supposed to be safe and if it couldn't provide, she very much doubted any other location would be keep him out of trouble.

This all seemed to leave one very unfortunate option, train him until he was so dangerous that no one dared so much as look in his direction with ill intent.

She could do it too. Harry was already at a professional level in terms of skill and power, he was using elemental magic to a degree most couldn't even dream of, and he had only just started his third year of education.

Perhaps she had been taking his training a bit too casually.
