I never ever find my way around the roads I walked on
And every single day the ground is crawling underneath
And I can never be the one to say I got this all wrong
In every single way I think I'm falling in between
With Confidence "The Turnaround"
"Sorry for the misunderstanding," Bill Avery said as he unlocked the cell door he had locked Nathan Grant in. He had talked to Mounite Headquarters and verified the newcomers identity. "You could've told me who you were earlier."
"I tried." Nathan told him stepping out of the cell. "You wouldn't listen."
"I meant before you got involved in the fight. I was told the new Mountie wouldn't be here for a couple more days."
"I like to get places early and get a feel for things."
"By getting involved in a fight."
"Not usually," Nathan told him. "I did get a feel for some of the people here though."
"I bet you did," Bill muttered softly as Nathan headed for the door. As Nathan reached for the doorknob the sheriff asked, "What about Jesse?"
With his hand on the doorknob, Nathan looked back at Bill. "What about him."
"Should I turn him loose or what?"
"You arrested him. I was just trying to stop the fight."
"True. However, technically you're the officer he assaulted."
"That punch was meant for Bouchard!" Jesse exclaimed from his cell.
"I won't be pressing charges," Nathan said before opening the door and slipping out into the night.
Bill stared at the door that had closed behind the newcomer. He wasn't sure what to make of their new Mountie and he didn't like that. He liked to be sure of things. He most certainly didn't like being proved wrong and the mistake he had made tonight wasn't soon to be forgotten. That was the one thing he was sure of right now.
"So?" Jesse asked, bringing Bill out of his thoughts.
Bill turned to look at the young man still sitting in the jail cell. Though he was a hothead, he knew Jesse had turned out to be a pretty decent guy. He hadn't planed on leaving him in jail long but after having just arrested the town's new Mountie for basically trying to do his job, Bill wasn't feeling up to releasing the one who was the cause of all this trouble in the first place.
"I have some paperwork to do," Bill said, heading to his desk.
He'd let Jesse stew a bit longer and when he had some paperwork done, he'd let the kid go home.
