AN: So this is another 'missing scene' from A Season of Miracles! Hope you all enjoy!
Elizabeth stood on the bottom step, watching and listening as Ally read to Jack as they sat on the settee. The fact that things had gotten quieter had brought Elizabeth downstairs to check on the children. Satisfied that all was well, Elizabeth went back upstairs. She made her way to her bedroom, or rather her and Nathan's bedroom now, and the task at hand. Lee and Bill had helped Nathan bring the packed boxes from his old row home. Elizabeth was now helping him unpack and find room for his things. As part of that process she had decided to go through her own clothes and get rid of things.
"Is this actually yours?" Nathan asked, turning from the wardrobe as he held up the dress that Julie had sent her. The one that she had worn on her first official date with Lucas. The one she had worn on the night Lucas had told her that he did not want to compete with Jack's memory.
"It is," Elizabeth admitted. "Julie sent it to me."
"So, then I guess you want to keep it?" Nathan asked.
Elizabeth shrugged. The tear that had happened the night Lucas had picked her up was still present. She had not even looked closer at it to see if it could be fixed. "What do you think of it?" she asked.
Nathan looked at the dress and then at Elizabeth. "I think you have other dresses that bring out your natural beauty much better than this dress would."
"Is that your way of saying you do not like it?" Elizabeth asked with a smile.
"I guess it is," Nathan admitted.
"Then toss it in the get rid of pile. I never felt comfortable in it anyway," Elizabeth admitted as she walked closer to him.
Nathan reached for her hand even as he tossed the dress on the pile of clothes they were getting rid of. Elizabeth let him pull her close. She rested the hand he wasn't holding on his chest as she looked up at him. Having gotten rid of the dress, Nathan rested his other hand on the small of back, holding her close.
"I want you to promise me something, Elizabeth," Nathan told her, gazing down into her eyes.
"What is that?" Elizabeth asked, gazing back and getting lost in his eyes.
"That you will never wear something that you feel uncomfortable in simply because you think I like it."
Elizabeth smiled, her heart feeling lighter at the consideration of her in that promise. "I can do that," she told him.
"Good," Nathan replied, leaning in close and pressing his lips against hers. The quiet, reserved nature of the kiss, just like the first time he had kissed her, made her heart beat faster.
Reaching up, Elizabeth slipped her hand behind Nathan's head so that she could deepen the kiss. When they finally broke for air, Nathan rested his forehead against hers.
"Do you think Roseamry and Lee would be willing to watch Jack tomorrow night?"
"Probably," Elizabeth replied. "Why?"
"Because Ally was invited to a sleep over at Emily's and I would very much like to let this go beyond just kissing."
"I will see what I can do," Elizabeth told him. "Though perhaps we should get back to work or we might not be able to find the bed tomorrow night."
"That would be a shame," Nathan said teasingly, giving her a short, quick kiss before letting her go and taking a step back.
As Nathan returned to the task, Elizabeth glanced at the dress lying on the pile on the bed. The fact that the dress had led to that little moment with her husband suddenly made wearing it seem worth it. At the same time though, she would be glad to be rid of it.
