The Journey Begins
After the Kanker Sisters were done shoving each other, they head down Route 101 to make their way to Oldale Town.
"So, what do we do now?" asked May. Before anyone can answer, a gray, canine-like Pokemon jumps out of the grass. "What is that?" Lee takes the pokedex out of her pocket and points it at the Pokemon.
"Poochyena, the Bite Pokemon. Poochyena is an omnivore-it will eat anything. A distinguishing feature is how large its fangs are compared to its body. This Pokémon tries to intimidate its foes by making the hair on its tail bristle out." said the pokedex.
"So how do we catch Pokemon?" asked May. Marie takes out Edd's notebook and reads through it.
"According to this, we're supposed to throw a pokeball at a Pokemon..." said Marie.
"I'm on it." said May as she takes an empty pokeball out of her backpack and throws it at Poochyena, hitting it and sucking it in. It wiggled around once before it opens up, releasing Poochyena and returning to May's hand.
"...after we tire it out by having our Pokemon battle it." said Marie.
"Oops." said May.
"Let me try." said Marie as she takes Mudkip's pokeball out of her pocket. "Come out, Mudkip!" She throws Mudkip's pokeball and releases her. "Okay, Mudkip, use Tackle!" Mudkip runs at Poochyena and rams it, knocking it back. Poochyena runs at Mudkip and rams into her, knocking her back. "Oh yeah?! Mudkip, Water Gun!" Mudkip releases a spiral of water out of her mouth, and it hits Poochyena, knocking it to the ground. Marie saw it was struggling to get up. She pulls an empty pokeball out of her pocket and throws it at Poochyena, hitting it and sucking it in. After it wiggled around a few times, it clicks, indicating a successful capture. "Yes! I caught a Poochyena!" Lee hears the pokedex chime and she takes it out of her pocket and looks at it.
"This thing says your Poochyena is a dark type, it's a boy, he knows only Tackle, and he has the Quick Feet ability which makes him faster if he has something called a 'status condition'." said Lee.
"What's a status condition?" asked May.
"I think it's like when there's something wrong with your Pokemon." said Lee.
"Like what happened after Double-D's Roserade's Poison Point ability poisoned that Mel creep's Heracross at the Lily of the Valley Conference." said Marie.
"Or when my big Ed's Skuntank was hit by that cute Pachirisu's Thunder Wave, and it paralyzed her?" asked May.
"Yeah." said Lee. Just then, a brown and cream striped, racoon-like Pokemon jumps out of the tall grass.
"What's that?" asked May. Lee points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Zigzagoon, the Tiny Racoon Pokemon. The hair on Zigzagoon's back is bristly. It rubs the hard back hair against trees to leave its territorial markings. This Pokémon may play dead to fool foes in battle." said the pokedex. May pulls Treecko's pokeball out of her pocket.
"Let me try this again." said May. "Treecko, come on out!" She throws Treecko's pokeball and releases her. "Treecko, use Pound!" Treecko runs at Zigzagoon and hits it with her tail, knocking it back. Zigzagoon glares at Treecko and lets out a cry, releasing soundwaves onto Treecko. "Hey, that didn't look like it hurt Treecko." May shrugs. "Treecko, use Pound again!" Treecko leaps at Zigzagoon and hits it with her tail again, but it didn't seem to do much damage as the previous Pound did. Zigzagoon charges at Treecko and rams her, knocking her back. "Hey! Treecko, try that Absorb move!" Treecko holds out her hand and releases a red beam of energy out of it onto Zigzagoon. Zigzagoon began to slump while Treecko's wound healed. "Hey. My Treecko looks much better."
"Maybe that Absorb move is like my Double D's Roserade's Giga Drain." said Marie. May saw Zigzagoon struggling to stay on its feet. She takes an empty pokeball out of her pocket and throws it at Zigzagoon, hitting it. It gets sucked into the pokeball and after it wiggled around a few times, it clicks, indicating Zigzagoon's capture. May runs to Zigzagoon's pokeball and picks it up. "Yay! I caught a Zigzagoon!"
"Yeah, yeah." said Lee as she pulls out her pokedex. "This says your Zigzagoon's a normal type, it's a girl, she knows Growl and Tackle, and she has the Pickup ability, which has her find stuff laying around."
"You mean Zigzagoon can find free stuff for us?" asked May.
"I guess." said Lee. She then feels something on her leg. She looks down to see a dark pink, worm-like Pokemon crawling on it, making her jump back in surprise.
"What's the matter, Lee? Are you afraid?" asked Marie in a mocking tone, making Lee punch her in the face.
"No! I was just surprised!" said Lee. She then points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Wurmple, the Worm Pokemon. Wurmple is targeted by Swellow as prey. This Pokémon will try to resist by pointing the spikes on its rear at the attacking predator. It will weaken the foe by leaking poison from the spikes." said the pokedex.
"You should try catching that one, Lee." said May. "Me and Marie already caught Pokemon."
"And that kid with the braces back home isn't around, otherwise, we'd make him eat it." said May.
"I don't think this Pokemon would fit in that kid's mouth anyway." said Marie.
"Fine." said Lee as she takes out her Torchic's pokeball and throws it, releasing her. Torchic stares down the Wurmple. "Okay, Torchic! Use Scratch!" Torchic runs at the Wurmple and scratches it with her talons. The Wurmple responds by spraying string from her mouth onto Torchic, tangling up her legs, making it hard to move. "So that's how you want it? Torchic, use Ember!" Torchic opens her beak and releases a barrage of small bits of fire from it, hitting Wurmple, doing super effective damage.
"That looked like it really hurt." said May. Lee looks at the Wurmple and sees it struggling to move. She then takes out an empty pokeball and throws it at the Wurmple, hitting it, and sucking it in. The pokeball wiggles a few times before it clicks, indicating a successful capture. Lee then walks over to the pokeball and picks it up.
"Yes! I caught a Wurmple!" said Lee as she holds her new Wurmple's pokeball over her head in triumph. She hears the pokedex chime, making her look at it. "This says my new Wurmple is a bug type, it's a boy, he knows Tackle and String Shot. He has the Shield Dust ability."
"What does that do?" asked Marie.
"Says here it blocks secondary effects of attacks." replied Lee.
"Secondary effects?" asked May.
"Yeah. Like how your boyfriend's Electivire's Thunderbolt also paralyzed that Tara girl's Altaria after he zapped it with it back at that tournament." replied Lee.
"Oh. So, what now?" asked May.
"Well Double-D's notebook said we can make our Pokemon stronger by making them battle other Pokemon a lot." said Marie.
"That sounds easy." said Lee. "Let's do it." The Kanker Sisters spent time training their Pokemon.
May's Treecko learned Quick Attack, and her Zigzagoon learned Tail Whip and Sand Attack. Her Zigzagoon also found a Potion, thanks to her Pickup ability.
Marie's Mudkip learned Mud-Slap, and her Poochyena learned Howl and Sand Attack.
Lee's Torchic got stronger, while her Wurmple learned Poison Sting. Also, while training, her Wurmple suddenly froze up.
"What's with my Wurmple?" asked Lee. She and her sisters watch as Wurmple started to glow and change. When the glowing stopped, Wurmple now looked like a light purple cocoon with red eyes. "Why did my Wurmple change?" Marie takes out Edd's notebook and reads through it until she saw something.
"I think your Wurmple 'evolved'." said Marie.
"Evolve?" said Lee.
"According to Double D's notebook, when some Pokemon gain enough experience, they change into a new Pokemon." replied Marie.
"So what's my Wurmple now?" asked Lee as she takes the pokedex out of her backpack and points it at her newly evolved Wurmple.
"Cascoon, the Cocoon Pokemon and the evolved form of Wurmple. If it is attacked, Cascoon remains motionless however badly it may be hurt. It does so because if it were to move, its body would be weak upon evolution. This Pokémon will also not forget the pain it endured." said the pokedex.
"This says my Wur...uh, I mean, Cascoon learned Harden and it has the Shed Skin ability which cures her of any status condition." said Lee.
"This Pokemon stuff is so cool." said May.
"No wonder our boyfriends wanted to do another Pokemon journey." said Marie. Lee looks up to see it was starting to get dark.
"Hey, it's getting dark. We better hurry to Oldale Town." said Lee.
"Yeah, we still need to sign up for that Hoenn League thing." said Marie. They look north and see Oldale Town in the distance.
"We're almost there, girls." said Lee.
"Let's get to that Pokemon Center place." said May.
"Double-D's notebook says that trainers get free rooms and food at Pokemon Centers." said Marie.
"Free food and rooms?!" exclaimed Lee. "I'll bet my man was excited when he first learned about that."
"Let's go!" said May. She and her sisters return their Pokemon to their pokeballs and continue on towards Oldale Town.
